>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. liz: a growing memorial this morning in the south bay for an eight-year-old boy struck by a car and killed on his way to school. good morning. it is saturday, september 17, i am stephanie sierra, in for liz kreutz. we'll have more in the moment. first, let's get to the weather. the sergeant is tracking a storm this weekend. good morning. -- lisa argen is tracking a storm this weekend. lisa: good morning. we are looking at a weather system moving our way. you can see queuing up in the pacific northwest. we have little fog in nevada and along the san mateo coast. 58 hayward and berkeley.

upper 40's. a cooler morning than 24 hours ago, from two degrees to five degrees cooler. as we look at the winds, breezy in san francisco up to 23 miles an hour, and in the east bay valleys, getting gusty. a windy day today with partly cloudy skies. 60's at 9:00 for the most part. and then at the noon hour, 60's around 70. by the afternoon, gusty south winds. dry today with 70's low 80's. our warmest locations. we will talk about rain moving in before midnight tonight and tracking a system for several days in the week ahead. stephanie: in san jose, family members identified a third grade student as the crash victim, jacob viento way bow -- villanuevo was in a crosswalk when he was struck. amanda del castillo was there is the family came together for a

vigil on friday. amanda: a growing memorial marks the site where eight-year-old jacob dent's babysitter were walking toward castle mont elementary in san jose friday morning. they were a block from campus when the two were hit in this crosswalk. both were taken to the hospital. jacob did not survive. >> it could have happened to her. my daughter. amanda: arcadia garcia did not know the boy but she knows the crosswalk. >> cars are never careful. they just drive. they don't care if you're walking by. amanda: an innocent kid remembered friday as the family gathered for a vigil at the crosswalk. >> [speaking spanish] amanda: in spanish, she says he was very friendly, and other little kids left him. san jose police say at 8:03 am, a woman driving a black mercedes went to take a left on driftwood drive from castle mont when she hit the pair the driver is cooperating. it is unclear what led up to the crash.

a dark day, added a sad and frustrating year, says collin haney, with the city's department of transportation. as of friday evening, san jose was at 50 traffic deaths this year alone. jacob's passing is the first juvenile death. >> it illustrated worst over could happen if you are drivings ramifications. amanda: he said the site is not a place with a history of traffic incidents, however, they are investigating the area, from paint countries to science to see what should be done. parents pleading --from paint to signs to see what should be done. parents pleading. >> i am hoping my daughter is safe and to see her when she comes back. this mom will never see her son. amanda: amanda del castillo, abc

7 news. stephanie: prayers are with that family. police are investigating a two-car crash yesterday in antioch that sent the car careening into kids and home. it happened around 3:30 p.m. police say the 10 mercury was attempting to make a left turn when the right and policy but passed it -- read impala to speed past it. the car went into kids and then a car. the driver and kids were airlifted. stephanie: in the east bay, bart service is restored. it started after 4:00 friday afternoon after a motorcyclist involved in a crash landed on the bart tracks near 24th street and northgate avenue in oakland. that is between the 19th street and macarthur stations. the person on the motorcycle was then struck and killed by the

train. trains were initially stopped in all directions, but the lines were slowly restored throughout the evening. >> a brush fire destroyed a home and damaged four others along the side of 580 in oakland. we spoke to some residents who saw the flames raced towards their homes. reporter: this is the damaged caused by visitation fire that spread to homes on quigley street on friday. >> the in law unit, it is our back house, kind of a man cave, it literally burned down. the back of it is burned completely. the wall is gone. reporter: alex went to check the mail and as he walked back, he saw smoke. by the time he ran to the backyard, the fire was already in histories. >> at least we do not lose the main house, so that is a plus. reporter: the fire broke out around 2:00 p.m. and was to contain within an hour but shut down three lanes of westbound 580 as fire crews battled spot fires. >> because of the slight wind,

that may have contributed to the fire spread, but they fully we will be getting rain this weekend. -- but thankfully we will be getting rain this weekend. reporter: the fire chief says the first unit arrived within two minutes. that may have helped keep the fire from spreading to the chevron gas station. >> that was really bad. reporter: eric says his backyard was burned but his house saved. he says two years ago, there was a similar fire. that one link to a homeless encampment. the chief says that is unlikely this time around, but nothing is being rolled out. >> yes, we did have a fire here approximately two years ago. yes, there was encampment activity possibly two years ago. but the fire today, we will not have any answers to those questions until we conduct a thorough investigation. >> went to the back door, and i see fire. reporter: margie has lived here six years. she did not lose her home but watched her car burn. >> when i looked out my window,

i saw cars on fire. i was like, oh lord. i better get out of here. i just plan to get out. reporter: no residents were injured, but one firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat related injuries. stephanie: in the south bay, emergency crews were missing of a serious crash thursday afternoon after a suspect took off from a possible crime scene at the intersection of center roads and tule road in san jose. it started in the morning when deputies responded to a trespassing call at the santa clara county fairgrounds. a suspect took off in a car, sideswiped another car, then drove about one mile before hitting another car. three people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. chp and san jose police are investigating the incident. an oakland woman is speaking out after her mother was shot inside her own home by a stray bullet. she says despite being the

victim of a robbery, or glory, and assault the past year, this is the last straw, forcing her mother to think about leaving the city she loves. dion lim spoke with her in an interview you will only see on seven. >> i do not want her to be another statistic. dion: roxana requested we not use her last name. she calls her mom superwoman for many reasons. an immigrant clean the war for a better life and had no idea what living in oakland would you like. >> she has been robbed many times. punched. they grabbed a necklace from her on the street. she has gone through all of that, but this is the scariest moment in her life because she almost died. dion: on august 17, days before her 61st birthday, roxana's mom was sleeping alongside her husband in their little saigon homewood gunshots rang out. you can still see to the state and neighboring house riddled with bullet holes. >> that gut instinct that you

have to go or else your life is going to be in danger. she knew. that is why she was like, we have got to go now. she was so scared. dion: these photos are difficult to process. they illustrate the three rounds that went into her back torso. >> she still has all the bullet fragments inside her. it is embedded deep inside. we cannot do anything about it. she is in constant pain. we just want her to get better. dion: what happened to roxana's mom came after a uber driver was murdered not far from the neighborhood. one dentist was also gunned down locked away in little saigon. too close for comfort and the reason roxana does not want her mother story to be forgotten. >> they do not know that these are our lives we are talking about. i would say it is a living nightmare. dion: wheels and her own back pain, exacerbated from the stress of caring for her family,

roxana set up a gofundme. she isn't sure what the answer is but feels stuck and makes this plea for change. >> we all grew up there. we all live there, and my mom does not want to leave. this is all she knows. she loves oakland. dion: she still loves it. >> of course, she still does, despite being robbed so many times, despite her almost losing her life. she still wants to be here and a part of oakland. we just want her to get better. dion: dion lim, abc 7 news. stephanie: we do have changes in the forecast. let's check in with lisa. lisa: we are starting out with some cool conditions across the golden gate bridge, upper 40's and parts of the north bay from santa rosa to upper 50's in the south bay, so breezy and cooler today with rain on the way. my full accuweather 7 forecast coming up. stephanie: plus, the new covid booster shot is available that

stephanie: welcome back. here's a live look from her camera at emeryville. more on your forecast, coming up. on the peninsula, four people were taken to the hospital esther after a balcony collapsed after -- hospital after a balcony collapsed near skyline boulevard. according to a fire authority, two adults and two children were injured. all four were transported by ambulance to a local trauma center for injuries. a city inspector is investigating the cause. new covid 19 booster shots are now available, and the white house says you should consider getting one before halloween.

the new vaccine from pfizer and moderna targets the original strain and the highly contagious ba.4 in ba.5 omicron variants. white house officials say the new boosters should be received before the holidays and colder winter months. abc 7 news got answers this week and had this advice for those considering getting the vaccine. >> obviously, you have to be mindful of when your last shot or booster is, or if you previously recovered from covid-19, and make sure you are eligible. i will add, getting this shot before october, the flu shot is another when you should ideally get before halloween. stephanie: if you recently had covid, experts suggest waiting three months before getting the updated shot. abc 7 is committed to building a better bay area, and our environment. on friday, governor newsom signed a legislative package in solano county, a plan to combat climate change and boost clean energy in california.

it is a $54 billion investment toward climate programs and aims to cut air pollution by 60%, reduce state oil consumption, and create a clean energy grid. the goal is to make california carbon neutral by 2045. governor newsom's feud with ron desantis escalated again yesterday. newsom took aim at the leader of the sunshine state on twitter, challenging him to a debate. abc 7 news reporter tim johns rig sit-down this morning. >> what ron desantis is doing is a disgrace. tim: an escalating war of words between governor newsom and 40 governor desantis. >> it is like the trash talk before boxing. tim: newsom taking to twitter to say that desantis craves attention and challenges him to a debate before the november election. it follows desantis' call -- it follows newsom's call to

investigate their immigration tactics. >> he sent a letter saying you need to prosecute texas and for the governors, and all i can say is, i think his hair gel is interfering with his brain function. tim: if you'd send me from desantis and governor greg abbott, sending migrants from their states to democratic strongholds. one of the most high-profile incidences this week after desantis sent 50 people to martha's vineyard, massachusetts, a move that and abc insiders as both politicians are trying to use to their advantage. >> ron desantis and gavin newsom were made for each other. they are both striding, young, very ambitious, and this is a way to get on the national platform. tim: politics aside, activists say it is important to remember that the migrants are human beings. >> that is the unfortunate thing that these republican governors are playing into political theater because they think by treating emigrants like this, they ultimately may win votes their next election. tim: tim johns, abc 7 news.

stephanie: oriental fruit flies have been found at a second location in santa clara county. as a result, the county and state will put out bait to catch them. this time, they turned up in sunnyvale. a couple of weeks ago, they were found in san jose, and they can do extensive damage to crops. among this weekend's events, affected by the rain, alameda's chopped festival. it was supposed to take place tomorrow at the alameda landing, but with rain expected, it has been postponed and rescheduled a later date. speaking of the rain, lisa is tracking the details of our forecast. lisa: good morning. it is kind of exciting to see this early-season rain that will certainly dampen the fire season, although, right after this, we have offshore winds and warmer weather headed our way, so we need every drop we can get. closer there is a little fog.

the winds are already kicking up, so it is a breezy, cooler dry day with light rain headed in tonight, and then looking at the moderate rain for sunday this time tomorrow. 59 oakland. cool numbers from santa rosa to nevada, 56 fremont, and a live look outside, this is a look at the shark tank. increasing clouds and winds today. quite gusty as winds out of the south increase, and looking at that storm moving in early tomorrow with unsettled weather through tuesday on the backside of that system. here are the winds, right along the coast, 22 to 30 miles an hour and strong winds. that strong onshore flow ahead of the system at the clock today , 25 35 miles -- system at 3:00 today. 25 to 30 five miles. we have the rainy system arriving tomorrow. we will continue that theme

early afternoon on sunday into sunday afternoon. it is a level 1 system headed our way tomorrow, and monday we get the potential for a thunderstorm or two, and then tuesday lingering showers. this will bring slippery roadways and perhaps visibility reduced out there at times in spots. let's track it at 11:00 tonight, knocking on our door, sonoma county, enter the middle of the night, 3:30 with heavier downpours in santa rosa, the rain just beginning in san francisco, and by 6:00, pushing into the east bay. the south bay, not yet. through 9:00 to 10:00, heavier rain through the east bay and south bay. you can see pockets in the north bay your sunday afternoon, the brakes, but maybe heavy downpours, as well. that first area of rain coming in tomorrow morning to the afternoon. this is a blend of the two forecast models, looking from one third of an inch to half an inch for the east bay, south

bay, and higher amounts for the north bay. maybe an inch and a half, so these are not exact amounts but a the two models. it does look impressive. we will see over a quarter of an inch, or like one third in san francisco. we saw that point to a seven on the map. 70 in oakland today would breezy to gusty winds. the winds making it feel like a fall day, but we get sunshine to start out. increasing clouds. 75 livermore. 75 napa with san mateo at around 70. the accuweather day forecast, gusty winds, chance of showers late tonight, are level 1 system tomorrow. morning rain, afternoon showers. perhaps a thunderstorm monday. lingering showers tuesday. three level one systems in that seven-day panel, so that is exciting. stephanie: much needed as we continue to face the drought here in california. in terms of flash flooding

stephanie: here at abc 7, we are commemorating hispanic heritage month. we have the story of a boy who left el salvador by himself to join his parents in san rafael. nine years old, so little, he did not know how to tie his shoes yet. he talks about it in his immensely moving memoir, and we spoke to him about his treacherous weeks long journey to america. >>pants up during the. w the ',

early 1990's, things were so dangerous in el salvador that fearing for his life, javier's father was forced to leave. zamora was only one year old. >> and then the war ended, but economically speaking, things had not changed and there was a lot of violence, and my mom tried to find a job but would be sexually harassed. reporter: his mother also ended up leaving when he was five and he was left in the care of his grandparents. >> she promised to come back, but the situation, as we like to call it in el salvador, kept getting worse. reporter: at what point did you have a conversation that you would leave el salvador? >> i always wanted to leave. one it to be with my parents. reporter: that meant traveling alone at nine with a coyote and

others from el salvador to the u.s.-mexico border. it took him nine weeks. he writes about it in his new book "zolito." solito in spanish means alone, but what does zolito mean? alone with only his backpack. he seldom shared his traumatic experience with others until now. > it was not until i begin to write i bano take that backpack off. reporter: he read from his book about escaping on a boat towards oaxaca, mexico, and encountering flying fish, a symbol of hope. >> may ride the wind like bullets, like skinny balloons, we are going to make it, i whisper. it is a good sign. reporter: he made it to san rafael and graduated from uc berkeley and was a fellow at stanford and harvard. he calls himself an outlier. he wants his readers to know that thanks to the people who cross the border with him, he

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. stephanie: good morning. let's get to the weather this half-hour. a storm is rolling in this weekend and meteorologist lisa argen is tracking the details. lisa: good morning. we have been advertising this for days, and we are looking this time tomorrow i pretty good rain, but today it is a dry,

cooler and windy day. 56 in dublin. looking at the clouds in san francisco, 56, but a cooler morning out there, ready much for everyone, anywhere from one degree to five degrees cooler and the winds picking up. the southerly winds making it feel cooler, banana suck -- but 9:00 and then upper 70's should do it for our warmest locations, so cooler today with clouds. upper 60's from the peninsula, and we will be looking at not only the rain chances arriving tomorrow but lasting through the early part of the week. stephanie: continuing storm watch as the bay area prepares for that rain. it could bring flooding to some areas. even sandbags are now available in some places. cornell barnard reports. cornell: sandbags are being delivered in san rafael, which

provides meals and medical care to hundreds of families in need. rain is on the way. >> we are concerned that the back of the pension might be flooded. cornell: the manager says ahead of the storm, a new sump pump has been installed and a huge generator standing by in case the power fails. seems like you are doing every thing you can ahead of the storm. >> correct. yes. we are trying to be more prepared than last time. last time was very damaging to us and our services. cornell: during last october savvy rains, the center had two feet of floodwater inside the food pantry, forcing them to close for several weeks. >> he gave me an umbrella. nice umbrella. and a raincoat jacket. cornell: clients like patrick are getting free rain gear help them stay dry. is that going to help? >> oh yeah. i have some pants. i have some like rain pants, so that will be good. that will complete the ensemble. cornell: in santa rosa, the sandbag station is now open and ready.

the attorney general and five district attorneys announced an $8 million settlement with safeway for environmental violations at 71 gas stations across california. they are branded as safeway and bonds fuel stations. >> california has strong regulations to prevent oil and gas from seeping into the ground and contaminating our drinking water for a reason. because the reality is, accidents happen. today settlement helps address that. stephanie: the state's investigation found safeway failed to install, implement, and operate various spill prevention and safety measures, aiding back to march 2015. yesterday's settlement includes terms to include operational safety and compliance with state laws to avoid potential contamination to soil and groundwater. 41 people were arrested after blocking traffic outside one of the terminals at san francisco international airport.

this video was provided by mike showing the protest. fast food workers at sfo say they make over $17 per hour, and the union that represents them says they have not received a raise in three years. negotiations have stalled after nine months, and the workers voted last month to go on a strike. the head of the california labor federation was one of those arrested and cited yesterday. astroworld prepares to say goodbye to queen elizabeth ii, an historic security operation is gearing up. people are still waiting in lines as long as 24 hours to pay their respects. it is a lot for some. one man was taken into custody last night after making a dash towards the queens coffin. metropolitan police say officers and security guards quickly tackled him to the ground. we have the report from london. reporter: as mourners continue to pay their respects, those

stephanie: state leaders a transit agency employees deal with a great amount of stress on their drums, leading to mental health issues. a new state law will allow agencies to create wellness centers to help relieve and support people struggling. news abc 7 abc 7 reporter dustin dorsey has the story. dustin: in the darkness, light. you just need to know where to look. for employees and their families after the tragic mass shooting last year, the five to six wellness center has been a source of light. >> i see people in desperate places, and they have resources now that were not available before, and i know they save lives. dustin: the wellness center, operated by santa clara county, is dedicated to providing

resources for anyone impacted by the shooting, from counseling to stress management, training and more, in the effort to break down the stigma of mental health and help people cope. now, things to a new bill signed in california, the 526 center will be the subject of a year-long study to see what it's working to create other centers. >> i think it will be the creativity and ingenuity people around the state about how to turn those things into broader solutions for preventing workplace violence and dealing with the stress and anxiety is on everybody's jobs. dustin: the bill, authored by dave cortez ghee, gives state agencies the opportunity to create their own centers to help prevent the next tragedy. part of that comes from peer referrals. two things the senator says could have. helped with the bta shooting he hopes wellness centers can be a statewide reality. >> we need to create it as a next step as a grant program so that every transit agency and every county in the state, whether it is status --
