stephanie: a growing memorial in the south bay for an 8-year-old boy struck by a car and killed on his way to school. it is saturday september 17. i'm stephanie sierra. we will have more on that but first let's get to the weather. lisa is tracking where you could expect rain. lisa: today is dry and we have a system in the pac-12 northwest bringing gusty winds and cooler conditions. we have fog at the coast and you can see from s.f.o. the lowe cloud deck. 57 san jose, some sun in the

city. anywhere from four to two degrees cooler this morning so breezy winds increasing and cloud cover. so, by noon we are partly cloudy and 60's and low 70's. by 4:00 mid 70's as the numbers drop two the upper 60's around the bay. winds breezy and we are talking about several days of rain coming our way. details coming up. stephanie: in the south bay family members identified a third grade student jacob villanueva was in a crosswalk in driftwood in san jose when he was struck by a car. the community came together for a vigil. >> a growing memorial marks where jacob villanueva and his baby-sitter were walking toward

ca castle mont and were hit and both taken to the hospital. jacob didn't survivoe. >> it could have happened. arcadia didn't know the boy but knows the crosswalk. >> cars are never careful. they don't care if you are walking. >> an innocent kid remembered as the community gathered for a vigil. >> in spanish she says he was very friendsly and other little kids loved him. police say about 8:03 a.m. a woman driving there went to take a lift on to driftwood and hit them. the driver stayed and is cooperating with the investigation though it is unclear what led to the crash. a dark day added a sad and frustrating year. as of friday san jose was at 50

traffic deaths this year alone. jacob's passing the first juvenile death. >> it illustrated the worst of what could happen if you are dri driving too fast or distracted. these decisions have serious ramifications. >> he said it is not where d.o.t. has a history of traffic safety incidents but they are investigating it from paint to trees to signs. papers pleading for can't -- parents pleading for change so others don't feel this pain. >> it is a time i take my daughter it school. i hope she is safe and see her when she comes back. his mom won't see her son. stephanie: new this morning in the north bay a 15-year-old is under arrest after she stole a truck and crashed it.

police released this picture of the pickup that went into a fence. it was in the area of caufield lane and park. they found her hiding after she initially left. she was taken to the hospital. police say when she was medically cleared she was booked into juvenile haul. it includes vehicle theft, hit and run and driving under the influence. police are investigating a car accidents at antioch that sent a car into kids and home on sycamore drive around 3:30 p.m. the mercury was attempting to turn left when a red impala sped past it. it caused the impala to strike three kids walking home from school then hit a home. the kids and driver were air lifted to a hospital with serious injuries. the east bay bart service is

restored. delays started after 4:00 friday after a motorcyclist involved in a crash-landed on the bart track near 24th and north gate in oakland. that is between the 19th street and mcart stations. the person on the motorcycle was struck and killed by a train. trains were stopped in all directions but the lines were slowly restored. a brush fire destroyed a home and damaged four others on i-580 oakland friday. we spoke to some residents who saw the flames. >> this is the damage caused by a vegetation fire that spread to homes on quigley street friday. so, the in-law unit is our back house, man cave, it burned down. the back of it is burned completely, the walls gone.

>> he said he went to check the mail and as he walked back he saw smoke. by the time he ran to the back yard it was in his trees. >> we didn't lose our main house. >> it broke out around 2:00 p.m. and was contained mostly within an hour but shut down three lanes of webb 50. >> because of the wind contributed to fire spread but we will get rain this weekend. but the weather conditions did contribute to the fire. >> the oakland fire chief said the first unit arrived within two minutes. that may have helped keep it from spreading to the chevron gas station. >> that was bad. >> eric said his back yard was burned but the house was saved. two years ago there was a similar fire. the chief says that is unlikely this time but nothing is ruled out. >> we did have a fire approximately two years ago and

there was en kcontaminant activy but the fire today we won't have answers until we conduct a thorough investigation. >> to the back door and i seen fire. skwra>> margie didn't lose her but watched her car burn. >> when i looked out the window of saw the car on fire and i'm like oh lord. i better get out of here. >> no rants were injured but one firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat related injuries. stephanie: in the south bay emergency crews were on the scene of a crash yesterday afternoon after a suspect took off from a possible crime scene. it was at the intersection of toly and center roads in san jose starting in the morning when deputies responded to a fairgrounds. the suspect left in a vehicle

sideswiped a car and drove about a mile before hitting another car. three were 10 taken it a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. police are investigating. an oakland woman is speaking out after her mother was shot in her own home by a stray bullet. she says despite being the victim of robbery, burglary and assault in the past year this was the last straw forcing her mom to think of leaving the city she loves. >> i don't want her to be another statistic. >> roxanne requested we not use her last name and calls her mom super woman an immigrant fleeing the war in vietnam she had no idea what oakland would be like. she's been robbed, punched. they grabbed a necklace from her on the street. she's gone through all of that. but this is the stairiest moment

because she almost died. >> on august 17 just days before her 61st birthday her mom was sleeping alongside her husband in their home when gunshots rang out. you can see a neighboring house riddled with bullet holes. >> you have to go or else your life will be in danger. that she knew. that's why she was like we have to go now. she was so scared. >> these photos are difficult to process. they illustrate the rounds that went into already back and torso. >> she has the bullet fort bragg. he's deep inside and we can't do anything about it. she is in constant pain. we want her to get better. >> what happened is after a uber driver was murdered. another one was gunned down in little saigon too close for

comfort and reason roxann doesn't want her story forgotten. >> they don't know this is our lives we are talking about. i would say it is more than hell. it is a living nightmare. >> overwhelmed by mechanical bills and back pain that was exacerbated about the stress of caring for her family she set up a go fund me. she was stuck and makes this plea for change. >> we all grew up there and live there and my mom doesn't want to leave. this is all she knows. she loves oakland. she is still not safe but she loves it. >> she does despite being robbed and almost losing her life she wants to be her and part of oakland. we just want her to get better. stephanie: we have changes in the forecast this weekend. let's check in with lisa. lisa: they start today with

stephanie: here is a shot atop of our roof camera the bay bridge foreshadowing the storm this weekend. stephanie: on the peninsula four were taken to the hospital yesterday after a balance connie collapsed off a home. the incident was at west moore avenue near skyline boulevard

shortly after 1:00 p.m. according to north county fire authority two adults and two children were injured in the collapse. all four were transported by ambulance to a local trauma center. we are told a city inspector is investigating the cause of the collapse. new covid-19 booster shots are available and the white house are saying you should consider getting one before halloween. the vaccine targets the original strain and omicron variants. white house officials say to get them before the holidays and colder winter months. we had a specialist on the program and had this advice for those considerin va st boosterr you priously recovered from covid-19 and you are eligible and i will add this time you are

getting it before october the flu shot is another one you should ideally get before halloween. stephanie: good to get both. if you recently had covid experts suggest you should wait at least three months before getting the updated shot. abc 7 is committed to building a better bay area and of course our environment. friday the governor signed a life package. it is a plan to combat climate change and boost clean energy in california. it is a $54 billion investment toward climate programs and aims to cut air pollution by 60%, reduce state oil consumption and create a clean energy grid and be carbon neutral by 2045. governor newsom's feud with governor desantis escalated again yesterday. he took aim at the leader of the sunshine state on twitter challenging him to a debate.

knew sunday and monday. i don't believe it is 60 in concord and we are blending the two models because rainfall amounts hard to pinpoint but we have an average we will show you increasing clouds and wind today. the storm arriving early tomorrow and then we will have rotation around an area of low pressure that will bring unsettled weather monday and tuesday. the winds are a factor today with the dry weather and gusty winds, 25, 35 miles an hour. as we get to sunday we have a break overnight sunday morning but toward 12:00 to 1:00 we have 30 to 40-mile-an-hour winds and briefly up to 50 miles an hour along the san mateo coast. our scale allows for a level 1 system sunday, monday and tuesday with a brief downpour and unstable air and gusty winds and slippery roads and beneficial rain although the

north bay adds santa cruz mountains getting perhaps over an inch. tonight the rain will push through overnight and heavier rain in the north bay then toward 6:00 we have downpours in the east bay. the peninsula, remember we have the niners game in the afternoon but by 9:30 we have rain in the south bay. amounts will be less there with the rain shadow effect but we will still get about a quarter inch. looking at noontime we have spotty downpours, peeks of sun and activity continues through sunday night through monday morning so a pwhrepdz of two forecast models bringing a quarter to a third of an inch to a half jr. for most of us from the city to the east bay and south bay but north bay perhaps an inch and inch and a half in the santa cruz mountains. upper 60's and cooler, increasing clouds, mid to you upper 70's and warmest locations inland valley south bay about

stephanie: we are commemorate ing spanish month. javier left the war torn nation of el salvador by himself to join his parents. at nine can you believe so little he didn't know how to tie his own shoes yet. he talks about it in his memoir. we spoke to him about his treacherous journey to america. >> my parents grew up during the civil war. >> it was the 1980's and early 1990's and it was so dangerous that fearing for his life javier's father was forced to leave. he was only a year old. >> then the war ended but economically speaking things didn't change and there was a

lot of violence. when my mom tried to find a job, she would be sexually harassed. >> his mother ended you -- ended up leaving when he was five. >> she promised to come back but the situation as we like to call it got worse. >> at what point did you have the conversation that you were going to leave el salvador? >> uh, i always wanted to leave because i wanted to be with my parents were >> that month traveling alone at age nine with others from el salvador to the u.s.-mexico border. it took thine weeks. he writes about it in his new book. >> the word solo in spanish means alone. what is solito. >> it means little alone. >> with only his backpack too embarrassed he seldom shared his

traumatic experience with others until now. >> it wasn't until i began to write it book that i began to take the backpack often. >> he read about escaping on a boat and encountering flying fish a symbol of hope. >> they ride the wind like bullets like skinny balloons we are going to make it i whisper. it is a good sign. he made it to san rafael and graduated from u.c. berkeley and was a fellow at stanford and harvard. he says he is an outlier. thanks to the people who crossed the border with him he was really never alone. >> now if you see them as human beings maybe you have more everyone think and maybe that can lead to change, really political change in this country. ni what a journey.

a live look outside, a hazy view from our tower camera. 55 in the city and 59 oakland, 60 palo alto and winds have been a issue. there is emoryville, 50 santa rosa. we are at 50 there. 60 concord and 9:00 the next few hours out of the 60's to the low 70's in the inland valley. by 4:00 it is a cloudier breezier and cooler day with mid 70's inland, upper 60's and gusty wins from peninsula to the south bay. as we look at the next several days we have that one on our exclusive storm impact. i will explain that and talk when we can expect the heaviest rain coming up. stephanie: get the umbrella ready. we continue storm watch as we prepare for this rain. it could bring flooding to some

areas and in certain places sandbags are available. we have this report. >> sandbags are being delivered to the ritter center which provides meals and medical care to hundreds in need. rain is on the way. >> we are concerned that it could be flooded. >> ahead of the storm a new sump pump was installed and even this generator is standing by in case the power fails. >> seems like you are doing everything you can ahead of the storm. >> we're trying to be more prepared than last time because last time was epic and damaging. >> during last october's rain they had two feet of flood water in the food pantry forcing them to close for several weeks. >> they gave me an umbrella, pulled out and rain jacket. >> clients are getting free rain gear to help stay dry.

stephanie: state leaders say transit agency employees deal with a great amount of stress leading to mental health issues often. a new law can allow them to create wellness centers to support team struggling. justin dorsey has the story. >> in the darkness there is light. you need to know where to look for v.t.a. employees after the shooting last week the 526 wellness center has been that source of light. >> i have seen people in desperate places and they have resources that were not available before. i know they save lives.

more textured cloud cover with the area of low pressure in it. as we get closer we can see the clouds from the peninsula to the east bay. but we are looking at partly cloudy skies this morning and there's a the mountains. temperatures are on the cool side and they are cooler than what they have been this team yesterday. they will finish cooler, maybe an oil-degree temperature by the delta but the clouds will overtake the sky and winds will be gusty, a neat picture as we have that tanker coming in. 50 santa rosa and 60 in concord with breezy winds from east bay and half moon bay but nice and sunny here and not bad from the golden gate bridge. increasing clouds and winds today with the storm moving in tomorrow and unsettled weather through tuesday. here is a look at the winds from 30 to 35 miles an hour along the

coast. they will pick up out of the west today so gusty onshore flows a bit of a break overnight and with the rain it is not only windy, they increase behind the system. this is 3:00 and we have winds up to 50 miles an hour. this is or exclusive storm impact to abc 7 and we will see this level 1 system not only tomorrow with the passage of the cold front, chance of a thunderstorm monday and tuesday lingering showers in that unstable air. late tonight we have rain knocking on our door but it is not until the overnight hours when we see the rain from marin county, sonoma, to the peninsula. there is 3:30 in the morning, advancing to 6:00 we get heavy downpours through about 9:30. by noon looks like a bit of a break but don't be fooled. more downpours coming into play in time for the nine, game.

exciting. parker said we were just talking in the car. he said i kind of started stumbling over my words. then i just -- i wasn't responding to him. >> she had a seizure behind the wheel. parker saw it coming. he released his seatbelt and got the wheel. and that's when she hit a tree. >> i remember grabbing the wheel, steering away from the traffic, and then from there, there's just, like, a few moments i remember. i remember screaming. i remember seeing my brother. my eyes felt foggy. and i remember looking down, and i saw that my ankle had broken. >> i woke up, and i was in the trees. i was in the bushes. and i hear the baby in the back seat screaming. and i heard parker screaming,

"get me out of this car before i die." [ siren wailing ] i knew something was wrong when we got to the hospital. they finally led me up to his room, and i just saw my baby laying on the bed, on life support, with a neck brace on and all these tubes coming out of his stomach and... it was bad. the next day, you could see his foot turning a little gray. and then the next day it was black, and the doctor came in and said, "okay, it's time for us to go ahead and amputate it. and so they pull the curtain. the whole family stands behind the curtain, and i have to sit on the bed with parker [voice breaking] and tell him that he's gonna be amputated. [ inhales sharply ] and he just cried out. and he was so afraid and

terrified, and i just had to reassure him that everything was gonna be okay. [ sniffles ] >> i was concerned about sports. i knew that it would take some time to get back in. so, they said they'll provide a prosthetic as the time progresses. and after i heard that, i said, "okay, i know that it's not gonna be the same as before, but i'm gonna try everything i possibly can to live the normal life that i was supposed to. the first time i went to shriners children's, i was blown away by how big it was. i remember meeting the doctors for the first time, meeting crissy, nate, all of those guys. >> when parker first came to us after his accident, it was, from the get-go, "can i run now?" it was never a slow transition

back to just being a kid. >> parker wants to be active. he wants to play sports. he wants to play baseball and basketball. he wants to do things with his friends, and, you know, we want to provide him with the care and the devices that he needs to enable him to do that. there are very good prosthetics now that allow children to get back into regular activities and be very active in sports and are here to kind of walk alongside these families to enable that to happen. >> for three months, i was not able to walk at all. but when i first took my first step with my prosthetic, it was like -- it was an amazing moment of my life, and it opened a new chapter for me. >> i tell people all the time i live with a real-life hero. his younger brother calls him peter parker all the time because they look at spider-man. "well, you don't understand, bryson. he's a real-life hero." [ laughs ] "he not only saved mama's life,
