>> building a better bay area. moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7 news. >> i am thankful it was con camera. this is an issue that has been going on for a long time. >> to young children and a father inches away from a horrible tragedy. all are ok but new video speaks to a much larger problem. thank you for joining us. i am dan ashley. ama: and i am ama daetz. dash cam footage shows the shocking moment an suv came within inches of a little girl. dan: our reporter amanda del castillo has more and explains the call to action in the neighborhood. amanda: dashcam was rolling as she stopped to let this family cross in san mateo. watch closely as the three enter the crosswalk. that dark suv rips the child's scooter from beneath her, a few

moments from what could have been a more profound tragedy. >> a few seconds later and she still -- and she could have gotten more seriously hurt. amanda: the girl's father tells meet the daughter is doing great. the family is shaken. i am told the driver returned to the scene. a report was taken and the traffic unit is investigating. huan who captured the incident and other residents say this is one example of close calls that have happened at this intersection. neighbors say they have alerted the city to it for years. >> we have been speaking in city council meetings and i think now the city will finally trigger some real action. amanda: pd says they have increased patrols. >> we monitor so we can continue to be proactive so the area continues to be safe for the

residents and pedestrians and other motorists. amanda: a city manager releasing a statement from the video saying the inexperienced driver failed to stop for the young child period when something like this happens, we have to ask why. they go onto explain how the city is taking action. they will also at additional pedestrian crossing beacons for visibility. we asked about their long-term goals and they say they are wondering if stop signs can be at this intersection. they say a traffic study is being conducted. the neighbors cannot help think how much worse it could have been. >> i made eye contact with the family about to cross the street. in low -- in slow motion i saw the car zooming past. amanda: i am amanda del castillo with abc7 news.

dan: san jose is searching for ways to cut down on traffic-related deaths on city streets. near 50 people have been killed on the roads there this year. this is despite that vision zero initiative that identifies dangerous roadways. police acted as pedestrian decoys and crackdown on drivers that did not stop. a virtual community meeting focused on two areas. >> they are going down the street too fast. 40, 50, 55 miles an hour. i would prefer a couple of speed bumps. i do nick -- i do not think stop signs are helping. they do not stop at stop signs, they run them. dan: the next meeting is putting up recommendations and funding to implement. ama: the federal reserve raised

a key interest rate. the latest move to ease inflation will make it more expensive to borrow money with higher rates. the rate hike made for a volatile day on wall street. the dow closed down more than 500 points. stock futures for tomorrow are also down. trying to end that historic inflation, many fear recession will be the price to pay. now, more cutbacks from major bay area companies. we are live with the potential outlook. j.r.: an unsettling feeling when you hear the companies in your city are eliminating jobs or relocating workers. it is happening in the bay area. we are seeing this happen over and over again. the hits keep coming. they will eliminate corporate jobs from gap in new york and san francisco. >> companies are making

decisions about the cost of labor, where they can get access to labor. j.r.: last week it was american airlines saying more than 400 flight attendants will be relocated to other states. tech insiders say google along with facebook's parent company are slimming down and restructuring some departments. >> they do not call it layoffs, they call it restructuring. we have uncertain economic times. it all spells the same thing, tie-in your belt get smart with where your money is. j.r.: the news is not all bad. if california words own country, the state would have the fifth largest economy in the world and is now challenging germany for the fourth spot, according to eight ucla study out on wednesday. the vice president of research at carver says the overall economy may have slowed down but -- >> the labor market as a whole

is still healthy and strong in comparison. j.r.: he says the bay area is no longer at the tech hub and is now competing with smaller cities like austin, boston and boise. a professor from stanford says housing affordability in california is having a major impact on the local economy in the decisions made by companies. >> what we need to do to move the needle is reduce barriers that are constraining housing supply and new construction. the weather and the beaches will only get you so far. companies are looking to make a profit. j.r.: a new ucla study finds that the u.s. is not currently in a recession. that study finds that the chance of a recession in the next 12 months is less than 50%. it also finds california economic forecast going forward

is weaker than it looked three months ago. back to you. ama: thank you. bart's mask mandate is set to expire in a little over than a week. the board of directors is scheduled to meet tomorrow to decide whether to extend the mandate. officers issue f passengers not wearing masks. mass can be fixed up for customers about to board trains. dan: i work in building a better bay area means building safe and thriving communities. in oakland, the rise is very clear and it is troubling. take a look at the trend in homicides. they have seen some of the significant homicide numbers since before the pandemic. 91 homicides this year and only as of september. what is the solution?

our abc news reporter set out to find solutions. >> oakland has seen a wave of homicides. for in just three days. >> we are here to help oakland. >> san francisco promoting a new branch of office for gun rights. i asked him, what can be done at the state level to help oakland? >> if they want resources, personnel, if they need us to support in other ways, to put into practice new approaches that can be more impactful. >> two people were shot at a bus stop. one man died. the shooting was also need -- near the assemblywoman's office. >> out of necessity, avenue had to take incredible strides to reduce gun violence.

this storm pushes out and out of here and produces numeral lightning strikes. there were thunder showers along with some snow. they had some snow mixing in. hopefully we see a lot of snow this coming winter. looking across the bay, nice clean air. good air quality. the weekend we will start to see good to moderate. 50's, 60's with ocean temperatures. this is above where we should be for this time of year. from our camera, san francisco is gorgeous. autumn starts tomorrow night. there is a warming trend that will go through the weekend. there will be some fog early tomorrow morning. as we go into the afternoon, the fog will get pushed out of the region.
