tonight, a man discovered shot dead in his van possibly the fifth homicide on an oakland freeway this year. another violent week in oakland. >> thank you for joining us. this case started when oakland police found a van around 11:30 last night. inside, a body with multiple gunshots. they tracked the shooting back to the freeway and now c.h.p. is taking over the case. >> late wednesday night c.h.p. and oakland police were investigating a van found on 50 1st avenue and international boulevard. police found a man shot dead. they are still trying to determine a motive but think the shooting happened on the freeway. >> a portion of 580 offramp was cold -- closed for a period of time to allow an investigation.

>> then violence is the major talking point for candidates heading into the november elections. >> there is a small population, small population of people who are committing these heinous murders, a small population. that is what we need to focus on. >> she says to stop the gun violence the city needs to expand police departments homicide investigation unit, which currently faces a huge backlog. she along with others as it is time to double down on violence prevention. a city councilmember was also running for mayor spoke at a forum on wednesday. >> we have to also make sure we are bringing crime deterrence, and the follow investigations necessary to make a complete public safety system. >> oakland residents say they have heard these slogans before. she is now running for an oakland city council seats.

poisoning of several people in san mateo. a lawsuit has been filed against atria park. a second person has died, a 93-year-old. last month at least three residents were given dishwashing liquid instead of juice. one of the residents, died within days. the incident is under investigation but a facility officials say it was a mistake. >> in the south bay it was the end of an era at the state of the city address. sam liccardo delivered his final address as he will term out of office in a few months. while details are limited about what he will be doing come january, he is turning his attention to the future. >> we have the information on the air's key initiatives. >> after eight years in office only four months remain for sam liccardo. he spoke with reporters ahead of his final state of the city address thursday reflecting on

make money off it. >> there are inspectors as well as police officers trying to keep an eye on things in that town. in orange county man has been charged with interfering with the flight crew after punching a flight attendant. it is on video. this happened yesterday on a flight from mexico to l.a.. 33-year-old is accused of grabbing the shoulders of two flight attendants and swinging his arm at another before plan -- punching her in the back of the head. he faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted. >> palo alto is clamping down on what was originally promised to be a new affordable housing solution. this so-called pod house is being cited for multiple building code violations. it offers 14 small sleeping pods and other shared rooms but the palo alto weekly reports inspectors went in after complaints. the pods did not have smoke detectors.

it also had faulty wiring and furniture blocking hallways and exits. they ordered the owners to make safety upgrades. they can still rent out pods while that happens. a pilot program could help thousands more students get a leg up on transferring to uc college. u.s. officials say thousands of students with a good gpa of like every year but do not meet eligibility requirements. beginning fall here, qualified students could receive a conditional acceptance. it would have to agree to finish any missing required classes at a community college. students would then get guaranteed admission to one of six campuses. they could apply to the three most popular campuses but would not be guaranteed a spot. >> there are renewed concerns the historic drought is causing trees to die a faster rate in the lake tahoe area. the u.s. forest service says it
