building a better bay area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. new bay area high schools were set to face off friday, but gridiron showdown never happened. the reason safety. good evening. i'm jr. stone. you're watching abc 7 news at 11:00 richmond high school's football team got its first win of the season because the other from san francisco. did not to play parents had concerns over sending their athletes to play enrichment. so they forfeit it abc 7 news reporter unser hudson has the story. the football field at richmond high has been empty since friday, which was supposed to be the school's first home game, but the opposing team decided not to come it means that students who have been working very hard to build up their football program did not get the opportunity to compete in their first competition of the year.

this sanders is the director of communications at west contra costa unified school district, richmond. high was supposed to play the team from san francisco's galileo academy of science and technology, but according to sanders richmond's football coach. simply got a notification on thursday without any discussion that galileo was in coming because the parents concerns over safety pacific instance that we're cited were not at richmond high school one was an incident that had occurred outside of a different high school enrichment in 2019. galileo has played richmond before but never in the city of richmond abc 7 news did reach out to the coaching staff and administration at galileo. they did not return the request for but in an interview with our media partners the san francisco standard galileo's football coach said quote i spoke with their principal and he explained that the recent incident had been at other schools in their district, but that didn't convince our parents. we would want to have a conversation about any parent safety concerns that there are

we would want to be able to share our safety plan and also dispel any potential rumors, but some say the forfeiture isn't just about a football game. it's also about a community and these students galileo is in a wealthy part of san francisco richmond high is an associate economically depressed part of the city and almost 90% latino the district admits that raises concerns, i think the optics are concerning and problematic and so our disappointment. it includes concern that there are some optics here that are problematic. sandra says richmond high school's principal will reach out to galileo's principle on monday to have those conversations. we want to make sure that this does not say to our students is that they have any less of a right to compete in a full high school experience because of the community that they come from in richmond on san hussain abc 7 news. san francisco's department of emergency management says several traffic signals that

san francisco cornell bernard abc 7 news heartbreaking to see that there in the east bay police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead in oakland. the incident happened at about 9 o'clock last night near 98th avenue and e street investigators have released very few details about what may have led to the shooting the victim's name has not been released. well protesters rallied in front of san francisco city hall this morning calling attention to the death of a 22 year old iranian woman. they chanted her name masa. amini participants expressed anger and demanded justice for her death. amini was arrested by the country's morality police last week after. being accused of wearing a loose and improper head covering authorities said she died from a heart attack, which many people are not buying protests have

it's official san francisco's uc hastings law school is getting a new name governor. gavin newsom has approved the name change to university of california college of law, san francisco the university board of directors unanimously agreed on changing the name. the school will go by uc law sf for short the change comes because of the founder serenas hastings involvement in atrocities committed against native americans the new name goes into a fact in january. caltrain rolled out their new fleet of electric trains in san francisco today. it's part of an effort to

electrify the rail system to reduce noise and greenhouse gas emissions 19 electric train sets will replace diesel-powered trains the new trains come with new amenities from enhanced storage spaces comfort and a quiet ride. our train system is leading the way the fight against climate change will not be won with minor reforms and symbolic gestures, but with bold efforts like the one that we recognize today. the new sustainable fleet will reduce co2 emissions by 97% cheating the new state of the art fleet has garnered up to 30,000 jobs across the nation. in the north bay a push to protect busy highway 37 from sea level rise in the coming decades is taking a big leap. caltrans is prepared to recommend building a four-lane causeway along the 21-mile

members of the san franciscoare. my husband and i start curling0e windows 20 people on the ice watching the club grow to where it is today and seeing this beautiful facility open up is just a moment to say for all of us. it took a ton of volunteer work. it took a lot of donations and people willing to believe in us and lend us money. it takes something that we'd love to talk about which is the spirit of curling. it's about a lot more than the curling here. it's about the community. how did you stumble across curling it's not the most common sport. that's very true. that's very very true. it's i have to give credit to my husband patrick who decided would be something fun we could do together got started first just by watching it on the olympics and thought it was, you know, a different and interesting sports and you know, i really like the strategy part of it this building and this facility where we landed is just it's just amazing for us.

sandia patel watching that curling, but you think we're in the middle of winter time. know where we are talking about hot summer like leather today jr. i mean, it was really unseasonably warm for this time of year. unless you were near the coast and then you're talking about the fog and cooler weather. i want to show you the high temperatures for today 98 degrees in fairfield got up into the mid 90s around napa livermore concord 80 in oakland 76 san francisco 90, san jose 93 santa rosa, you know the place to be was half moon bay where it was a mild in comparison 69 degrees temperatures right now as you will notice nice cooling breeze has brought the numbers down right near the coast and around the bay 50 60s, but well inland you're still hanging on to some of the low 70s live views from our tower cameras, and there's one common theme in most of those shots and that has been the fog so you're going to be seeing more of this this came

expecting a strong flu season. so we anticipate a much higher volume of patients that come into our emergency departments. there will be a rise of cases for those vulnerable populations, which also include the elderly population and the very young there will be increased hospitalizations and increase deaths during the flu season between september of 2020 and may 2021 the cdc reported that of the more than 800,000 influence a test done in the us only 1600 came back positive. that's point two percent one main possibility they credit for the improvements are covid-19 precautions, like mask wearing reduced travel and social distancing, but those mitigation measures aren't the same this year. there's less masks social distancing has come a thing of the past for the large majority of the population in the country. and of course in the bay area just disease specialist dr. peter chin hong says part of why health experts are especially concerned this season is because of what's happened in other parts of the world.
