shutting down traffic and racing up an oakland hillside. a reminder that our fire season is far from over. thank you for joining us. >> this latest fire drawing an immediate response in the dry brush near the oakland hills. it started after 6:30 when a truck went up in flames on the westbound side of 580 near the edwards avenue exit. everyone inside the truck was able to get out safely. j.r. stone was at the scene with reaction tonight.

>> firefighters spraying down a pickup truck along i-5 80 in oakland. one that caught fire just after 6:00 monday night. >> people around heard there was some type of explosion and the fire, smoke burning. >> i was right there, i heard the explosion of whatever it was, whatever vehicle. reporter: the people in this truck got out safely but those flames quickly spread to the hillside along i-5 80. >> everything that happens on these hills is too close for comfort. >> this fire was no exception. fire chief linda buhl says flames came between 40 and 50 yards of homes on oakland's lou rock court. -- blue rock court. >> i'm just glad it looks like they got it out. it was pretty scary. it has the potential to be an inferno. when i saw smoke, when i saw flames, i thought that trail is on fire and we are in trouble. reporter: no one hurt here and

no homes burned, but uci 580 backed up for hours -- but you see i-580 backed up for hours. crews were able to get the upper hand and say they will have a fire truck in the area all night to make sure there are no flareups. in oakland, j.r. stone, abc7news. >> an alarming review of the alameda county sheriffs office. 47 deputies being stripped of their badges and firearms after failing psychological evaluations. luz pena spoke with experts who say controversy will only start there. >> it's a bombshell the alameda county sheriff's department admits was wrong. 47 deputies were asked to give back their badge and firearms after an internal audit into their psychological exams found they were not suited for the job. >> a lot of young people out of

college do not do as well on the psychological exam as someone who has much more life experience. this has nothing to do with substance use issues or mental disorders or diagnoses. reporter: sergeant ray kelly said a contributing factor was their age. deputies qualify for this role at 21 years old. cordell, a retired superior court judge and former independent police auditor for the city of san jose, pointed out the psychological exam measures more than just age. >> this whole purpose is to determine whether or not that person is suitable to do the work of a law enforcement officer. free from emotional and/or mental conditions. that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer. reporter: a former san francisco assistant district attorney believes these candidates should have been flagged years ago. >> no job requires more

discretion, more good judgment, more balanced psychological state, then somebody with a badge and a gun. i hope they are not in a position of authority anymore. reporter: what triggered this was a double homicide where a 24-year-old alameda deputy was arrested. he failed his law enforcement psychological exam. sergeant kelly said prior to 2016, the law allowed people with a low psychological exam score to be hired. the law changed in 2016. >> either people just dropped the ball and did not keep up with the law, it is more than an oversight, that is negligence. reporter: the alameda county sheriff's department confirmed the 47 deputies are currently doing desk jobs and will undergo a second exam. >> you believe more consequences will come out of this? >> yes, there are going to be serious repercussions.

i see lawsuits, i can see deputies suing. some heads are going to roll. reporter: we reached out to the union representing sheriff deputies but have not heard back. hts artis normal, but travelers may have a tough time getting food. 1000 workers at 84 restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and lunches at sfo went on an open-ended strike. the union says the majority of these workers make just over $17 and our -- $17 an hour and have not received a raise in years. >> we need to provide expenses we need for our family. >> we did not hear back from the collective-bargaining bargaining group representing the employer's.

san francisco's board of supervisors is scheduled to hold a special meeting tomorrow with the airport director and union representatives. golden gate university has listed two buildings for sale in san francisco as it works to transition post-pandemic. the university plans to sell their main campus off mission street and a second building on jesse street. as first reported by the san francisco business times, the university is looking for another appropriate size campus within the city. golden gate university president david fike says in part, we believe this moment offers a unique opportunity to reimagine our university. to address the changing preference of students and faculty for hybrid and remote learning, and what are san francisco and global footprint should be post-pandemic. >> if you have filled up for gas lately you may have been hit with sticker shock. prices in san francisco and san jose are up $.30 just in the last week. $.56 from a month ago.

california's average has climbed back up to nearly five dollars 60 sins per gallon. president biden urged gas stations to lower their prices amid decades high inflation. >> bring down the prices you are charging at the pump. do it now. >> gas prices have lowered nationwide compared to one month ago but not nearly the case in california. president biden also spoke about the new requirement for airlines to disclose added fees on flights. the storm is strengthening. this is a view of hurricane ian from the international space station. now a category two storm as it is making its way toward florida. let's give you a live look at the storm's path tonight. residence in florida could start feeling ian's wrath tomorrow with hurricane conditions ramping up wednesday. as morgan norwood explains,

leaders are urging people to get ready. >> hurricane ian charging toward florida, bringing the potential for catastrophic damage. businesses boarding up and families fueling up as the state scrambles to prepare. >> we don't know. we are just going to trust god and do what we need to do. reporter: tempo could see dangerous storm surge. officials are pleading with residents on the coast to get out while they can. officials in hemp is hillsborough county announcing mandatory evacuations for some areas. >> we expect to evacuate 300,000 people and it will take some time, which is why we are starting today. reporter: ron desantis declaring a state of emergency, activating the national guard. at the federal level, joe biden declaring an emergency, threatening fema to provide assistance. the health and human services

secretary declaring a public health emergency, calling in more than a dozen medical teams as a level 1 trauma facility in the evacuation zone scrambles to prepare. rob marciano shows us. >> they are putting up flood protection around tampa general. this is the aqua fence. it is mobile, modular, and necessary. this trauma center sits in the evacuation zone. it will likely flood. this wallace is designed to keep the water out so they can keep the patients in. reporter: the storm also slamming the cayman islands, sites now set on cuba before moving toward florida. nasa now planning to roll back its billion-dollar rocket from the launchpad, lift off delayed until october at least. in addition to the dangerous storm surge, there is concern about how long florida could be dealing with hurricane ian. the system could stall over the coast of tampa for nearly 48 hours.

>> a high-stakes visit is set for this week for vice president kamala harris. harris is planning a trip thursday to the demilitarized zone dividing the republic of korea and north korea. the visit comes as the u.s. deals with new provocations from pyongyang which has repeatedly testfired ballistic missiles this year with the latest test on sunday. harris will tour sites at the dmz and receive an operational briefing from u.s. commanders. she's currently in japan leading a delegation to the funeral for former japanese prime minister shinzo abe. the jewish community center of san francisco held a special celebration for rosh hashanah today at chrissy field beach where attendees 600-year-old ril that traditionally involves tossing into the ocean. organizers made it more eco-friendly by using birdseed instead. the idea is to rid yourself of

>> new details about a football game forfeit. galileo high school in san francisco pulling the plug on the game over safety concerns from parents. abc7news reporter ryan curry got to the bottom of the sudden cancellation. reporter: it is a new week of school for richmond high but students are going to class disappointed over the actions of parents for another school. galileo academy of science and technology forfeited its game friday because the roster was to lean after their parents of seven football players refused to let their kids play citing concerns for safety. it is something students do not agree with. >> they think here is the ghetto area.

they think something bad is going to happen. reporter: stephen goes to richmond high school. he says rumors started circulating about his school being unsafe which he says are not true. >> they said richmond was dangerous, potential bombings or shootings. that is kind of dumb. reporter: the superintendent of the west contra costa school district says the cancellation was not based on data. >> it was uncalled for. they did not have the facts right. when they say we have a lot of crime and violence over here, i would like to know what they are looking at. reporter: richmond high school will play their next football game friday evening but as the season goes on, students here feel people will look at their high school in a not so positive light. >> i want people to think it is a good school. i want them to see it as it has always been. it is a good school to come learn. reporter: the galileo team had to forfeit because it did not have enough players for a number of reasons including eligibility and illness.

they did not say whether safety was a reason. the superintendent says they put a lot of effort into keeping athletic events safe including working with police. he says they have had no issues of violence this year and he wants other schools to understand that. >> they look forward to these games. to have a community decide based on faulty information or inaccurate information they are just going to forfeit the game? it is heartbreaking. reporter: ryan curry, abc7news. >> the government antitrust lawsuit against american airlines and jetblue will head to trial tomorrow. the justice department and six states are suing to break the developing alliance between those carriers. they claim it decreases competition and could result in higher fares. the airlines have already been partnered up for more than a year and their lawyers will argue it has allowed the airlines to offer routes they could not manage on their own. the outcome could affect how the

biden administration evaluates other airline deals. >> today nasa today first of its kind planetary defense demonstrations and an attempt to protect earth if an asteroid was to head toward our planet. >> nasa sent a spacecraft to intentionally slam into an asteroid named mim -- named dimorphouus. >> and we have impact! in the name of planetary defense. >> nasa's dart mission spacecraft as it is called launched last year and successfully collided with the asteroid at a speed of four miles per second. >> all we are attempting to do is move it a little bit. than hollywood movies they try to blow asteroids up. that's not really what we are trying to do. what we are trying to do is slow it down enough that it will pass

we have breezy conditions as clouds are expanding. we expect to see fog across the bay, locally inland, maybe even a few drizzling drops at the coastline. it is cooler than it was this time last night by at least a few degrees. let's take a couple live camera views, one from the exploratorium camera looking back at a portion of the san francisco skyline. 57 degrees in the city. 55 degrees clara and half moon bay. nice view at emeryville. big clouds off in the distance. not much marine layer. we expect to see something overnight. mi 50's in santa rosa and napa. 72 degrees at fairfield. that might be a misread on the part of the computer. a fairly warm reading for this time of night. 58. from our rooftop camera across the embarcadero at the bay

bridge we present this view and these forecast features. low clouds and fog will develop. coastal morning drizzle as possible. maybe some will move on shore and produce damp spots for morning commuters. a brief warm up thursday and friday for another cooldown over the weekend. you see the low clouds and fog pushing across the bay. those green flags indicating areas of drizzle which will be mainly offshore, but once again a few of them may move on shore. should be very -- not very widespread but there could be enough to produce damp spots on the roadways. overnight lows in the mid to upper 50's. highs tomorrow, 60 three half moon bay. san francisco 68. the inland east bay will be our warmest region with most highs in mid 80's to 85 at antioch, concorde, fairfield. upper 70's to low 80's. in the south bay, upper 70's.
