7 news senior education reporter. land melendez is in the newsroom with more on the project and leanne wyatt took so long. well, dan, those who qualify and trust me, there will be many will be selected through a lottery system now new york city has been building affordable housing for teachers for decades now. san francisco is so late to the game because of the politics number one and 20 years ago when they were about to build the first complex of 45 unit building in the sunset. we didn't have the kind of affordability crisis that we have today. the san francisco school district owns the land where the old francis scott key. annex was located in the sunset district in 18 months. the new housing development will look like this 135 units to be rented exclusively to teachers and staff of the school district if you're teaching our kids in san francisco, you should be able to raise your kids in san francisco.

people attending today's groundbreaking ceremony said it was long overdue that may be so but you have to remember that the concept of building teacher housing was proposed nearly 20 years ago with the construction of the diane feinstein elementary school. this is what it was supposed to look like housing at the back of the school, but teachers didn't warm up to the idea in addition the community and then supervisor leland yee were adamantly opposed so during the day here's former school board member jill wins in a 2019 interview with abc 7. they said, oh it's a public housing project never let hud get involved. you know, it will be a slum. it was never built and teachers lost out but through the years. it's become a parent that teachers making on average 82,000 a year have found it difficult to afford living in san francisco for leaving all

the time. point about 70% of my income was just targeted to what i could put into rent. that shouldn't be a choice that anyone has to make the development will have units ranging in size from studios to three bedroom apartments and will cost between $836.3300 a month depending on the household income we can do it when we listen to each other even if everything that comes to the table is not necessarily something we agree with we can do it. this is proof positive that we can do it. and they can do it because of a 2016 bill authored by then states senator mark leno, which allows school districts to use surplus land for teacher housing in addition to the one we mentioned that you saw there san francisco unified has three more empty lots. they can build on now one more thing if a teacher or staff decides to leave the school district and let's say find

another job. they will have to give up that housing in the newsroom leanne melendez abc 7 news fascinating stuff lee and thank you and out of the peninsula where hillsborough is debating how to meet state affordable housing requirements there just last night. there was an intense meeting today abc 7 news reporter tim john spoke with the town's mayor and housing advocates and explains why hillsborough's plan may put it on a collision course with sacramento. drive along the quiet streets of hillsboro and you might never know a battle was brewing. thanks to state law every city and town in california will soon be required to build a certain number of affordable housing units while many places are building several forms of housing. hillsboro wants to fulfill most of its requirement with its accessory dwelling units or adus adus are typically small spaces built on private property. we do not want to put the lives of our citizens at risk through what i would call il divine. is multi-unit high density units our voice is the mayor of

hillsboro. he says the city's hilly landscape and the lack of land available for development make it difficult to build other types of housing royce tells abc 7 news in addition to those concerns many people in hillsboro also want to preserve the town's unique character that view seem to be echoed by many who showed up for public comment at a town meeting monday night. please do not give into the pressure of having a gun to your head by the state or by activists, but not everybody agrees with hillsborough's proposal and some housing advocates say they don't even think it will get approved by state regulators to my knowledge no municipality in california as of yet has had a plan that is, you know, so overwhelmingly comprised of 80's approved by the state. jordan grimes is the housing advocate in the peninsula. he believes as it stands hillsboro's proposal does little to address the regions housing crisis and says most units will probably be difficult. old to rent out there's no way to ensure they're affordability.

it really is. unfortunately just a way to try and skirt those state requirements hillsboro has until january 30th to submit their proposals and make any changes that may be required by the state if they fail to meet that deadline the town runs the risk of facing thousands of dollars worth of fines every day in hillsborough tim johns abc 7 news. now to oakland where it was another violent day on city streets a shooting near 98th and eids avenues this morning claimed the life of one man. another victim is in the hospital recovering evidence markers were placed throughout the shooting scene right in the middle of a neighborhood and as you can see in broad daylight this morning's killing marks the 96th homicide for oakland this year. there were 102 killings at the same time last year. and with nine homicides in the last nine days oakland's top cop says he is reassigning more officers to investigate all of this gun violence chief leron. armstrong says, he hears residents loud and clear.

but most critically important right now is but for us to bring forth the sense of safety in the city of oakland because i know people are fearful and we want to be able to manage that fear. eight officers will now be permanently assigned to investigations and the department's traffic enforcement unit will be reinstated. it was disbanded because of short staffing a while ago 50 new officers are expected to join the force by early next year when two more academy classes graduate. there are also fire concerns in oakland after three broke out. along oakland's fire chiefs spoke with abc 7 news reporter leslie, brinkley and confirmed at least one of the fires was our sin. there have been three fires along a three-mile stretch of interstate 580 in oakland over the last 12 days, but the fire department clarified that is not a disturbing pattern but a bizarre fluke the first brush fire on the afternoon of

september 16th quickly went to four alarms near quigley street in 35th avenue destroying an in-law unit and damaging four nearby homes the investigation into what triggered that blaze is still ongoing, but it is not believed to be intentionally set but the next set of fires a trio of small fires on september 20th were intentionally set as investigators found fuses and flares near 35th avenue and coolidge our fire investigators with working with the oakland police department have deemed that particular fire to be calls by arson activ. a very hopeful and confident that this particular suspect will be apprehended and brought to justice. and fire last night a pickards avenue and quickly moved up the hillside as the two occupants escaped some type of vehicle had explosion anything that happens up here on these hills is too close for comfort. there was rapid fire spread into

asian-american tv reporters in the bay area and he spent on the air the longest watching our industry grow and technology evolve from one of the first live feeds and local television in the 1980s street is completely shut off to people there are some people watch out to new technology that turns people into holograms. and here i am as a hologram. it's really magical over the years david has reported on many of the bay area's biggest stories the kidnapping of patty hearst the loma prieta earthquake here. he is in san mateo in 1982 during a moment. he might like to forget slogan through one of the bay area's biggest floods. just after the 9/11 attacks david did the first interview with san jose's normanetta then secretary of transportation. he had a shutdown the entire us air traffic system. he traveled to asia many times in 1986. he went to the philippines during the people power revolution that ended with ferdinand marcos going into

exile. we were warned that people had guns in the ready and they might be turning against us in 1979. david was one of the first american reporters allowed into china much of the cargo will leave here from shanghai and then end up in the port of san francisco as bay area trade with the pacific rim took off david became the abc 7 news business reporter over the years. he'd interview some of the biggest names in silicon valley, but david is not all business all the time. well, remember those yeah, i do. alright guys, we're reminiscing here. yeah. david is here now david. we're so excited for you. and so amazed by 50 incredible years, you know, you've covered the tech industry obviously for a long time big part of his focus in the last 50 years there have been a lot of changes in how we've covered the news. i've seen a lot of times even more. absolutely. i mean we started shooting film tonight when i started here in 1972, and we had a process the film and it was a long splice it

long process and then we carried pagers we didn't have cell phones. i mean, you know all the and we had wire machines, you know, we used to have to rip copy off the wire machines. oh, that was one of my jobs in the early days. i had to start overwatch absolutely and the fun part. i used to collect numbers from pay phones all over the bay area because when news broke we wanted to find out what's going out in the field, so we would call the pay phone. i would call the pay phone for my little list and see if you yeah, if someone could always an accident there. did somebody get hurt whatever what happened that i've never heard that that's clever now, we can't find a paper. right exactly. where's the payphone? but you know, it's interesting with the 50 years not only as technology change and how we cover the news but what kinds of stories we can tell have changed i asked you in the newsroom about some of the stories you're most proud of and you told me about some stories you did in the early 1980s groundbreaking reporting on women's health. we did were the first station to really embrace the story of toxic shock syndrome now, i don't know whether how many people remember about those days

but rely -- had just come out by procter & gamble. they had sent thousands and thousands of samples of that to the public right in the mail and people started using them. they were super absorbent. they were new at the time. never a new formulation. people started getting sick and people were actually dying and we embraced that story as uncomfortable as it was in the beginning to decide, you know people willing to hear about this talk about it, but we wanted to save lives and made a big difference, but you were saying that other stations and other outlets were staying away from that story. they were reluctant to talk about people didn't talk about a lot of things. that's true. that's true audience is so different from other audiences because they embraced it. they understood the you know, the magnitude of the problem and the danger that they were at the risk. they were at serious health family. we covered aids in the early days absolutely stations talked about our most people talk about right one of the things that i know means so much to you is to

be involved in this community and to give back you've been so philanthropic over the years david. you've also created a scholarship at your alma mater northwestern. yes. tell me tell us about that. well, i've always felt that it's important to give back to the community and one of the things i wanted to do was help the next generation of journalists, and i see an awful lot of opportunities to do that and scholarships are is one way we talked at four four o'clock about kristen z and how she was one of the first asian american journalist association scholarship recipients here in the bay area presented it i presented it to her and i was on the scholarship selection committee that reviewed her application. i feel so proud to see the success stories like that. right and we know there are many other promise journalists who are in the pipeline now who must take my seat and other seats in the future and we need and yes be straight great storytellers. okay, david, we saw that picture of you you are five years old when you first got into this business. what are you gonna do now? what's next for you? well, i love photography. i love to travel. i think those are two things

high on my agenda. i haven't i have not made up my my you know bucket list of exactly where i'm going yet, but i've been you know all over the world already and so they're some places i want to revisit and a few places. i haven't been i would really love to go on another safari in africa africa lots of pictures of animals. yeah, well you have a whole new chapter of life ahead of you after leaving behind 50 years of incredible journalism and friendship in this community and all of us here at this tv station. we adore you and we're so happy. thank you and thank you to bay area for being so kind to me through the years and supportive. i've loved telling your stories, and i'm certainly going to miss coming to work every day. i know it's time for you'll miss for a while. it's time for some free time and less stress. we're really gonna miss you. we all look up to you so much. thank you so much you for everything and you know what you look back at those old pictures david hasn't aged. maybe a little less hair, but you a little less hair.

yeah... oh. don't worry i got it! california amber alert has ended in tragic and bizarre circumstances sheriff's deputies found themselout this morning with fugitive. murder suspect anthony john graziano. it happened as in hesperia in san bernardino county's high desert. he's accused of abducting his estranged 15 year old daughter savannah now during the shootout. she emerges from the suspect's truck, but she's wearing body armor and a helmet officials say savannah runs toward deputies reportedly with a they open fire. the deputies go up and render medical aid and realize that this is savannah in the tactical gear. they immediately transport her to an area a local area hospital at 11:52 hours. savannah is pronounced deceased. her father was found dead at the scene the san bernardino county. sheriff says autopsies will determine who shot who and no

deputies were hurt. anthony. graziano is suspected of killing his daughter's mother in fontana on monday. look today local leaders and members of the asian american community came together to present a check to the family of patrick fung. he was the uber driver shot and killed during a robbery in oakland back in july the community raised over a hundred thousand dollars for fung's family today that money was presented to his fiancee's son and father after thanking the community his family also called for better gun control measures. it feels like marshall law that we are imposing on ourself because we're afraid to go up at night. and i hope oakland in the state can do something. oakland police and the assistant district attorney also attended the event two people have been arrested and charged in fung staff. seven on your side's michael phinney is coming out next and he is the story of a grieving mother. millions of parents about a

area moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7. no warning for years millions of parents bought fisher prices. hugely popular rock and play unaware that more than 30 babies had died in it. rock'n plays were recalled in 2019, and now three years later fisher-price revealed even more infants died the consumer products safety commission knew of the danger but a law prevented it from warning the public and for one mother the grief never ended and she told her story to seven on your sides michael finney michael. yeah, look many parents believe that if baby product is on the shelf. it's been tested and deemed safe, but it's mainly up to companies to decide what is safe. there is no warning over the years that dozens of babies died in the rock and play one. mom says if she had only known she might still have her daughter. she smiled.

degrees. i just i felt so helpless they'd received the rock and play as a gift a trusted product by a legacy company fisher-price owned by mattel people just equate this brand with trust. they had no idea the consumer product safety commission was quietly investigating a series of infant deaths in the sleeper and was forbidden by law to warn the public without consent from fisher price. the company was entitled to conduct its own research on product safety and decide whether a voluntary recall was warranted. and so erica's peaceful nap was shattered that day erica wake up. there's something wrong with emma. and she was blue frantically. they called 911 laid him on a counter john pumping her tiny chest. i was just on the floor plane. i felt so helpless watching him do cpr that i just didn't know

what else to do except just praying. hope that it's not true that like some divine intervention can can it not true. bit emma was gone. i'm never gonna be able to forget what it was like to hold my daughter lifeless and my hands. they're just like how how could this have happened? it wasn't until eight months later. she saw it on tv all models the fisher-price rock and play sleepers are being recalled more than 30 infants have died in these sleepers when i saw the picture of it on the news my heart say because i knew. it was the rocking place sleeper like the one emma was in when she died rock and play had been linked to more than 30 infant deaths since 2009 for all those years. no one had warned her a lot of anger that they knew fisher-price recalled the rock

and play in 2019. but only after the cpsc inadvertently released data about the fatalities to consumer reports in the recall notice cpsc warned infant fatalities have occurred after infant rolled from their back to their stomach or side while unrestrained or under other circumstances. this one was one of the one that she was in the day before she died now eric and john are suing the talent fisher prize for wrongful death claiming. the company's new the rock can play was dangerous, but kept selling it. anyway, pediatrician say inclined products are not safe for sleep due to risk of suffocation when a baby is on an incline. it's actually harder for them to keep their head and neck straight. then their airway gets kinked and that can create more problems. the lawsuit says emma was found in the sleeper with her head hanging forward not breathing doctors unable to reviver fisher price from a child did not

comment on emma's death or the lawsuit. the maintained the rock can play with safe when used as instructed telling us there is nothing more important to fisher price than the safety of our products and the trust consumers place in us, but after the recall the rock and play was blamed for even more infant deaths last summer fisher price acknowledged the death toll had tripled concern reached the halls of congress absolutely shocking. it is a national scandal. and not only were babies dying the company knew babies were dying. the federal government knew babies were dying and yet parents were not warned now the cpsc is trying to warn about another fisher price rocker linked to more deaths and it's still on the market. why? explain tomorrow night story that poor mother. oh, so thank you for reporting on that. thank you. all right coming up the oakland

right next to a busy children's hospital isn't exactly the kind of location. most buyers are seeking but when a home across the street from ucsf benny off children's hospital in oakland, hit the market and important buyer didn't waste any time casey pratt joins us with that story. hey, casey. yeah, dan, and liz this was a really interesting story to do for ronald mcdonald house charities. it was the perfect spot and for children in need of bone marrow transplants this home opening in 2023 will be an absolute game changer. it was hard. they weren't sure that she was gonna make it there for a second when 14 year old raylan hawkins needed to stem cell transplant. she was sent to the experts at ucsf benioff children's hospital in oakland, except. it was four hours away from home and she was in for a lengthy stay. we were in the hospital stay for

six weeks and then we found out we had to stay an additional three months. we require that families be within 20 minutes of the hospital in case there's a an emergency develops so you can imagine what a strain that puts on family finances the convenience of not living at home. they said that if they couldn't find a charity house that we would have to pay for a hotel every night for three months or stay somewhere and we were like panicking and luckily, we found something and it worked out fortunately ronald mcdonald house charities came to sheena and ray's aide, but without any openings in oakland, they stayed across the bay in a donated apartment in san francisco. so thank god that we were close, but it would have been nice if we were closer. so it was it was it was tough times. it was a struggle recently a house across the street from ucsf benioff children's hospital in oakland. hit the market ronald mcdonald

cared for so now they have the house, but some housewarming is in order for it to truly become a home the oakland a's decided to lead off that effort with a truck full of toys and video games for the future tenants to give them a place right across the street where they can see the hospital. they know their child's right over there. they can come here get a home cook meal take a nice shower feel like they're at home when they're far away from home and going through what could be the toughest thing they have to go through as a family. it's just really comforting to know that we have a place like this this close here in oakland for our families even saying that his his kids picked out a lot of the things that they brought here today. nobody knows what a kid wants more than a kid. it was heartwarming to see the players come out and support us this way. i want to challenge the community to support. on house efforts so that they can continue this amazing work sheena and ray are so happy to hear about the new home, but hope to never stay there rey now 15 is on to bigger things like 10th grade. well, it was rough. and i felt like the me stay down
