clearly we are in serious trouble when we have bullets flying in our school the ongoing violence crippling oakland today enters school grounds. i just want to get to my daughter streets are closed off park at the bottom of the hill walked up bullets flying by on a campus with multiple schools students staff and parents suddenly sent into instant panic here a community now dealing with raw emotion and as they treat the wounded the community must heal as well. they are traumatize. to protective mode something has changed. i'm a thunderbolt. i grew up in oakland. this is not the oakland that i grew up in a city now being challenged to come out stronger than ever together tonight with a common bond between this is the closest it's ever got to home. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley a harrowing day at a school for so many gun

violence coming right up to the doorstep of an oakland campus police. got the first calls of a shooting just after 2:45 pm on fontaine street right next to the king estates campus. it houses a number of schools the ones you see listed here, but investigators say the shooting happened on the roadsdale high school part of the campus now, here's the latest information we have right to this moment police say of the six people shot two of those victims are in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. one other has non-life threatening entries. another has been released from the hospital to our close to being released. the campus will be closed tomorrow during the ongoing investigation the suspect or suspects are still on the loose tonight. but tonight new details are emerging about those moments that gunfire broke out and those people caught in the middle abc 7 news reporter jr. stone is following the story. he is in the newsroom force with more on a couple of the victims today jr. well, dan, specifically we're

learning more about two victims tonight one. is this man jason arbuckle a carpenter with oakland unified. he didn't feel comfortable talking on camera this evening, but tells us a bullet grazed his head and left some fragments behind. he and a crew were hanging a trophy display case when the shooting broke out other parents describe a second victim who rushed to help after some of the shots were fired. letters marking the bullet holes left inside a school building after gunfire erupted at the king estates complex in east oakland parents. tell us this is an area where students enter the campus one left littered with yellow evidence markers some labeling spots were shell casings were found parents described what they were told by those inside this student was saying that he was gonna die and he was telling him that he was not going to die mario wars whose son goes to bay tech, which is a charter school on campus is describing.

what a security guard there told him before going to the hospital with the gunshot wound. not only after he getting shot. he not high. but he went to provide a to a student who had four bullet wounds to his back although on arm was still brave? and the courage to protect children today and provide a to another one that was shot and laying down that school guard is going to be okay according to school officials king estates complex is made up of three schools authorities. haven't said where all the shots were fired or what went down only saying the shooting happened in proximity of rudsdale continuation high school and area roped off with yellow crime scene tape wednesday evening. we know that we encountered victims inside the school in total six people who are all 18 or older were shot. juarez says at least two are students but police he parents.

we spoke with upset over the violence and hopeful that an arrest is made it's saddens me what he told me because he said that i thought they were firecrackers and they should not be bullets flying through the halls of a school hitting people now some parents i spoke with are very upset saying there have been past incidents on this campus in recent months. they believe the district should have done more to protect those inside the schools. then now back to you. okay, jr. thanks very much jr. stone reporting. today's incident led to certainly a somber tone at this evening's oakland unified school board meeting. we share the great fear hurt and loss of the people who were injured and their and those who cared for them in that time of crisis. we are also grateful for the courage responsibility and love that was expressed by all those who have begun to address the

needs. of our families in our community. the pre-scheduled meeting began with board president gary yee addressing the shooting shortly afterward ousd students had the chance to speak for themselves. we need to stop the cycle of violence at our school site young people and our staff members should be our priority always many of our students have felt extremely unsafe at their schools students should never have to express that they feel unsafe. every school site school site should make the most utmost efforts in order to ensure the safety of our students and staff. several parents also addressed the board about today's shooting many of them calling for the district to put more resources toward increased security and violence prevention on campuses now the calls for change were echoed by many across oakland today understandably including several who showed up at the site of the shooting abc 7 news reporter unser hassan has that six victims shot on a school

campus caps 10 straight days of gun violence in oakland. the safety of their students is in. our haiti schools are safe places for our children to come to tand mayor. she was among the crowds of people who rushed to the campus after the shooting. she says for her the shooting proves that the city hasn't invested enough in programs that initiatives to help children succeed particularly in this part of our community. we've just invested in them and so children are taking matters into their own hand. they're doing things in ways are not healthy to resolve conflict and that is what we are seeing today community activists. nina. carter says despite all the rhetoric around school funding things won't change in oakland if students can't relate to those who are in charge. i have people in the schools and on these cancers that these kids are relatable too. you can't just have anybody tell them what these type of traumas that these kids face that you have to come from that the shooting comes a day after

oakland police chief lauren armstrong announced new measures to tackle gun violence. this is a problem in 2021 and 2022. to we've seen must a doubling of the violent crimes victims that we're seeing here at our facility three of the victims with the worst injuries were brought to highland hospital in oakland. it's the primary trauma center for alameda county james. jackson is the ceo of alameda health system. something has changed. i'm a son of oakland i grew up in oakland. this is not the oakland that i grew up in we've got to do differently. we've got to do something better enough is enough. this has this must stop keith brown is head of the oakland teachers union. he says gun violence isn't limited to oakland. he calls it a national crisis. he joins others calling on city leaders religious organizations and community groups to come together to put an end to gun violence. this has been a rough year in oakland, but it doesn't define us.

expected as hurricane ian moves through central florida. fema says it is ready to respond just as soon as the hurricane passes through all right. let's go to abc 7 news meteorologist sandy patel tracking hurricane ian. very closely sandy sandy. give us a sense of the conditions right now. i know it was a four when it hit land started weakening right away. yeah, dan, so it has weakened considerably, but the damage is done and it has been catastrophic. let me show you live doppler 7 right now as you will notice the eye of the hurricane not so well defined this hurricane did make landfall as dan mentioned as a category four. you can see as we take you back in time. it was a monster storm. it packed 150 mile an hour winds now, it's a cat one winds of 75, so it's barely hanging on to hurricane status. it will continue to weak into a tropical storm moving over the atlantic and then veering back towards the carolinas over the weekend. so this is gonna be days of rain all the way up the carolina coast from florida to the

tonight just before the sun was setting you will notice looking back towards future tower the fog rolling in a really shallow layer of fog and up above notice those higher clouds that were coming in gave us sort of just a pretty skyline there area of low pressure pushing into the pacific northwest responsible for bringing that green layer back into the picture and certainly sending those high clouds our way that low is moving on out of here, but it has been responsible for the below average temperatures today. that's not going to last because tomorrow the warming begins and by friday we're going to go at or above average so as we look at live doppler 7 right now, we do have some patchy fog out there certainly is thick across parts of the coastal areas half moon bay reporting visibility. five miles earlier tonight. it was just over a mile. so be careful if you were commuting tomorrow because there will be some areas of dense fog temperatures right now in the 50s 60s you head out towards brentwood. it is 73 degrees and a live view from our east bay hills camera.

♪♪ offer a few thoughts about what really matters as we process what occurred today on an oakland school campus as you've heard six people shot three critically injured during a shooting on the king estates campus in east oakland where four different schools are located all of the injured or at least 18 years of age. thank goodness. no young children are injured, but they were certainly affected and their parents many were just scared to death understandably and while we wait to find out more about the circumstances of today's shooting what we all already know is that we just can't keep going on this way moving from one mass shooting to the next has tragically become a way of life in america the cost of doing business. but it can't be we have to do better. it's easy to say but very hard to do a complex problem that requires resolve common sense and a multi-faceted approach americans pride ourselves on facing challenges solving problems and meeting the moment.
