for your thursday. outside, here's the exploratorium camera showing starry skies above the city, some coastal cloud cover. sunrise in about an hour. we will find bright skies quickly, it is warmer. mid and upper 80's inland. around the bay shoreline, topping out in the upper 70's. 60's along the coast. we will take a look and preview the weekend in a few minutes. kumasi: we are starting this morning with a devastating mass shooting in oakland. students will not return to the school's campus today. half a dozen people were injured yesterday afternoon. julian: we are working to get more information about the victims. police have not said if they were students, teachers or other staff members. they say they got the first calls of the shooting just after 12:45 p.m. on fontaine street, next to the campus. this is a campus that houses several schools. investigators say the shooting happened on the high school part of the campus. of the six people shot, to her in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. -- two are in the hospital with

life-threatening injuries, one has non-life-threatening injuries. lena howland is following the story and joins us live from the newsroom what parents need to know as they prepared to send their kids to school this morning. lena: parents still trying to comprehend how something like this could have happened. it happened in an area where their students enter the campus every day. they also helped paint a picture of some of the victims. when is this man, -- one is this man, carpenter with oakland unified. he was not comfortable talking on camera, but says a bullet grazed his head and left fragments behind. he and a crew were hanging trophy displays when the shooting broke out. other parents described a second victim rushed to help after some of the shots were fired. mario, whose son goes to the school, describes what a security guard told him before

going to the hospital with a gunshot wound. >> not only after getting shot, he did not hide. he went to provide aid to a student who had four bullet wounds to his back. the student was saying he was going to die. although alarmed, still brave. he had the courage to protect children today and provide aid to another that was shot and laying down. lena: the security guard is going to be ok, according to school officials. in total, six people who are all 18 or older were shot. at least to her students. police have yet to confirm that information. -- two our students. back to you. kumasi: the school shooting cast a somber tone over the oakland unified school board meeting. >> we share the grief, fear,

hurt and loss of the people who were injured and their families. and, those who cared for them in that time of crisis. we are also grateful for the courage, responsibility and love that was expressed by all those who have begun to address the needs of our families in our community. kumasi: the meeting began with the board president addressing the shooting. shortly after, ousd students had the chance to speak for themselves. >> we need to stop the cycle of violence at school. young people in staff members should be our priority, always. >> many students have felt extremely unsafe at their schools. students should never have to express that they feel unsafe. every school site should make the utmost effort to ensure the safety of students and staff. kumasi: several parents also addressed the school board about the shooting, many of them calling for the district to put

rainfall in some areas, for people who decided to stay, the extreme wind and flooding left them stranded with nowhere to go. >> at this point, everybody should be staying home or in the shelter. they should not be on the roadway. it only takes a couple inches to move a car, we were already expecting about 12 to 20 inches of rain. some places could see up to 30. jobina: in fort myers, flooding submerged cars and reached roofs in treetops. the local river flooded downtown. power is out to at least 2 million people this morning. utility companies are standing by with thousands of workers, but it could be weeks before power is restored because roads have to be cleared of debris before work can begin. kumasi: we have complete coverage of hurricane ian on her abc bay area streaming app. live reports and the latest information from florida, you can download the app for apple tv, andrew tv, amazon fire and roku. search for hurricane ian.

fellow councilmember of assaulting her, forcing her to go to the hospital before the meeting. the councilmember denied the allegations, saying they are politically motivated. her attorney says it started when they both went to a conference room at the same time on monday. >> i was walking out, and she slammed the door on me while i was exiting. julian: she says she got bruises when the door was slammed on her, they are calling for an internal investigation. we reached out to the offices of both councilmembers and have not heard back. we have also not heard back from the mayor or other councilmembers. kumasi: that the mystic violence suspect at the center of an hours long standoff inside a pleasant hill nordstrom rack this morning is in jail.

authorities say he ran inside the store tuesday evening after leading police on a chase in what they say was a stolen vehicle. police were convinced he changed clothes, then snuck out with customers. hours later, they spotted him on the lowering himself down from the ceiling. they arrested him. julian: the baxa plan to strengthen fema response to wildfires. the fire act was authorized by california senator alex padilla. it will serve as an update to fema rules written with the agency primarily focused on hurricanes, tornadoes and floods. the legislation now moves to the house. a san jose school security guard is under arrest, accused of sexually assaulting a student. he worked at navigate college prep, place a the parents of a young girl found messages from him on her phone. further investigation, they determined he committed multiple sexual assaults. now, police are sharing a

warning for parents. >> it is important for parents to monitor activities your children are doing on their devices. often times, parents now are handing a device to somebody and forgetting about it. there are a lot of predators out there that are going to different apps that young people play. julian: we are showing you this photo, because san jose police leave there could be more victims. anyone who may have information is asked to call the san jose police department. kumasi: today in the south bay, opening arguments are set to begin in the corruption trial of santa clara county sheriff laurie smith. smith is accused of trading concealed weapons permits for donations to her reelection campaign. she's also accused of withholding documents tied to an internal affairs investigation of her management of the county jails. smith denies the allegations, the trial is the first step that could lead to her being removed from office. even if smith avoids conviction, she is planning to retire in

foot to two feet of rain over the past 24 hours in some spots. intense wind and storm surge, now it is moving to the open ocean. it will strengthen a little bit, but remain a tropical storm. landfall is likely friday evening, probably on the coast of south carolina. rainfall will likely be an issue once again, expecting six to 12 inches in parts of south carolina as the storm moves in. back at home, quite a different story. good morning, san jose. partly cloudy skies, here is how the forecast chipset. warmer weather the next two days, then it cools off. it is a beautiful looking autumn day, sunshine and temperatures in the 70's close to the ocean. mid and upper 80's as you move inland. if you're headed to oracle park, a nice evening. generally clear skies early on, temperatures falling through the 60's. take the sweatshirt with you, the jacket. we will need it, we see fog role in as the game continues.

information. it happened right next to the king estates campus in oakland, which houses several schools. investigators say the shooting happened on the high school part of campus. parents tell us one person shot was an unarmed security guard, who is expected to be ok according to school officials. they say after he was shot, he chose not to hide, but provide aid to someone believed to be a student that was shot and lying on the ground and reassuring him he was not going to die. after being reunited with his mom nearly two hours after the shooting, this 10-year-old in fifth grade at a wind academy explains the chaotic moments in his classroom. >> it was scary, i was freaking out. my whole classroom was freaking out. my classmates, everyone was under the desks. a little bit scary, i have to deal with it because, um, our

teacher calmed me down. i know that our school will keep us safe. lena: that was another student, a 10-year-old from oakland academy of knowledge. she said she was scared, but incredibly thankful to see her mom again. police have not revealed if the victims were students, teachers or other staff members. because of the situation, school officials decided to cancel classes for the day on the king estate campus in oakland. abc 7 news. julian: your heart breaks for the students, thank you. the shooting worked 10 straight days of gun violence here in oakland. this morning, there are more calls for action. oakland city councilmember trevor reed rushed to the scene yesterday, the campus is in her district. she said the city has not invested enough in programs to help children succeed, which is leading to unhealthy habits and

cycles of harm. community activists say it is more than just programs and funding. they do not believe things will not change until students can relate to those in charge. >> you can't just have anybody dealing these type of traumas these kids face. you have to come from that. julian: now, the oakland teachers union is also demanding change. asking city leaders, religious organizations and community groups to come together to put an end to gun violence. kumasi: local leaders are giving their reaction on twitter to the oakland school campus shooting. the oakland mayor tweeted in part, "today's gun violence shocks the soul. our schools are sanctuaries for children." the office of the governor says get again, our kids were in the crossfire. this cannot continue. gun violence has taken too much from our communities. a u.s. representative adding "gun violence is a public health emergency.

we miss treated as one, ban assault weapons, require stricter background checks and much more." julian: governor newsom signed a new legislative package to tackle the housing crisis. >> the issue of housing and affordability, it touches more things in more ways on more days than any other issue. julian: the two bills signed will allow for more affordable housing to be built and underused commercial areas, typically reserved for retail office and parking. governor says the change will also create thousands of jobs and ramp up housing near public transit areas. he also announced $1 billion in funding for what his office considers shovel ready projects through a state program called the california housing accelerator. those projects are expected to create nearly 2800 new homes. kumasi: avner newsom has until tomorrow to sign or veto dozens of bills. -- governor newsom has until tomorrow to sign or veto dozens of bills.

potential to do a great deal more damage, already triggering flash flood warning's across central florida, proving strong enough to ravage parts of the state. astonishing sites at of southwest florida, where ian made landfall as a forceful category four storm. whipping up walls of water in fort myers, swamping roads, leaving just the tops of cars visible. just more than an hour later, the same cars completely covered. the water rising to reach treetops and roofs. fort myers river overflowing into the city, flooding a downtown area. south of the area, the force snatching down power lines in downtown naples. the naples fire department fighting through floodwater to rescue the trapped driver. this map showing how much of the area has been flooded by storm

surge, with ian still raging. inaes f nearly 30 years, recording this video as the water creeps that. >> that house halfway underwater, there goes my car, floating away. justin: and then flooding is the deadliest component of hurricanes for the last 30 years. as ian loses strength and moves northeast, president biden warning floridians. >> the danger is real. when the storm passes, the federal government will be there to help you recover. justin: florida under a state of emergency, fast tracking disaster relief resources. georgia, south carolina and north carolina also declaring states of emergency, with ian forecast to move their way in just days. forecasters are still warning that ian still has the potential for heavy rains, strong wind conditions, and storm surge

kumasi: seven things to know this morning, developing news in oakland. a search is underway for a gunman after a mass shooting on a school campus. at least six people were hurt. the shooting happened right next to the king estates campus yesterday afternoon, which houses several schools. investigators say the shooting broke out on the high school part of campus. julian: students will t rninkland d schoolys tg es be closed today during the ongoing investigation. kumasi: parents call for more resources for security and violence prevention on campuses during the oakland school board meeting last night.
