every visit. every day. ikea moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. i think it's really unfair that we don't have the same quality of water that everyone else does have. running water that burns eyes ometimes comes out of the tap in one peninsula city are saying enough. evening and thank you for joining us md on limb and i'm dan ashley hundreds of customers in east palo alto. say the quality of their water is taking a toll not only on their health, but their finances abc7 news reporter zach fuentes spoke with those impacted by the water and with officials on what's being done to change it. it's a visual that's difficult to look at the water east palo alto residents say they're getting when quality is at its worst. that's when the pipes are being

cleaned out. we usually don't get a notice when they do and we whenever we turn on the water and it's brown we just have to wait until and let the water run until it's clean again the discolored water just part of the complaints local organization nuestra casa collected in a survey that was just published this week. it was part of a larger report done between 2017 and 2021 that aims to get grant money to improve water structure and underserved communities it found more than 700 east palo alto residents saying that they're concerned about their water quality and aging water infrastructure whenever i shower my eyes are burned and i have a lot of hair loss now, i don't cook with the water we buy water bottle. um to drink and use for cooking the survey found that more than 75% of respondents by bottled water for cooking and drinking 55% did not feel their drinking water is safe. unless rakasa says the survey opened up an important opportunity for residents to have their voices heard the

family sarah taking the initiative how they can advocate for for them for the themselves because it's important to know what is the next steps for today. the survey has caught the attention of local leaders. we reached out to the city of east palo alto who's city manager sent us a report that sets ago before their city council on tuesday. it explains that the city contracts water operator who oversees quality standards. the actual water received comes from the san francisco public utilities commission. the report says the water has to pass through an old water system owned by the city and also aged pipes owned by the residents which may lead to the water becoming discolored. they say any water issues can be reported by residents and will be investigated san mateo county supervisor. david canopy says federal and local governments have to step up. we need to allocate funding so that they can develop a comprehensive plan to fix this aging aging infrastructure now in response to the survey the city says it's holding a public meeting about its water system

on november 17th, and then on tuesday the city council is set to approve 8.5 million dollars for a new water plan master system in the south bay zach fuentes abc 7 news. well two days after a shooting at oakland's rudsdale high school the campus remains closed today. we're learning more new details about the violence. and how one group is trying to prevent another incident abc 7 news reporter loose pena spoke with a violence interrupter who works with students at the school. yeah, and she has much more on how the group works and how they are helping those students cope loose. deon and dan this violence interrupter from the non-profit youth alive said they're speaking to students and following up on leads and intel from within the school and even though there's no credible threat at this moment of another possible incident. they're actively diffusing incidents. two days after more than 30 rounds were fired inside russell high school in east oakland access to the campus remains closed and carlos jackson with a

non-profit uvalife says her work hasn't stopped. tensions are running high. so yeah. i was just following up with another possible situation in the middle of our interview jackson received a call. we're holding space for them as well. so you're getting calls you can go ahead you can go ahead. that's why following up on leads from emails text messages videos and trying to make sure that what's happened here doesn't spill off into other schools or into the community jackson couldn't elaborate on today's lead. youth life has a violence interrupter on campus who works on de-escalating incidents many of these incidents are tackled through mediation behind the scenes during a press conference on thursday the chief of oakland police said there were at least two shooters responsible for injuring two students and four other adults on wednesday. no arrests have been made. we do believe that this incident is grouping gang related. we know that there were at least

two shooters and another accomplice. related to this case, but they may have been more today the oakland police department confirmed the responded to the king estates school campus in the past couple of months rutsdale high is one of three schools on that campus jackson says, they're helping students cope while trying to prevent violence and retaliation after this shooting. we are always trying to be alert and trying to get ahead of situations before they happen. so whenever we hear certain names or incidents we try to tap in with our clients we tap in we'll participants and members of the community. now there is surveillance video of the shooting where at least two suspects could be seen oakland police have not released this video yet. i followed up on this today and was told they're gonna have to confirm with investigators if this video will be available again, no arrests have been made yet in the newsroom news peña

abc 7 news. thank you if you were someone, you know needs help dealing with the trauma of gun violence. you can find a local ally by going to abc 7 news com slash take action drivers use 101 in san mateo county have watched for two years. well caltrans spends more than half a billion dollars to install new express lanes. the project is now being delayed into next year. but why is that abc 7 news item reporter, dan noyes has been looking for answers and he joins us with this story. i feel the frustration already. well then we respond to your complaints and this is one of them the paving on these smooth new lanes is done. so why can't we use them now? traffic on 101 and san mateo county is returning to pre-pandemic levels. construction of new express lanes isn't helping look at some slow traffic here. this is due to the san mateo 101 express lanes project. we're looking at feeds averaging around 12 and 24 miles per hour the project to reduce congestion is setting up toll lanes free to

cars with three or more passengers reduced fares for two passengers or clean air vehicles. solo drivers can pay full price to use the express lanes the cost will go up or down depending on how crowded the lane is, but there have been delays the target for completion when the project began was mid-2022, but two weeks ago the project manager announced opening date will be next year. perhaps february or march the contractor opted to do things out of sequence and as a result had to actually do correct take corrective actions that add in time to the schedule those nice new express lanes have fresh pavement, but are blocked off by orange markers and that drivers nobody up, please. i don't like to be stuck in traffic. what are they doing? what are they really doing put down cones for a living? we don't pay for that crew still have to finish installing overhead toll sensors and that work is done at night, but they keep those cones up all day. i work construction.

so i understand guys go take breaks, but you don't put cones out of life freeway then go take a break for months and months. yeah over year two years that's just ghost cones everywhere. i went to the san mateo county transit district to interview the chair of the joint powers authority that oversees the express lanes project. there's sensors. there's some fabrication that still needs to be installed and there's the testing of it that is currently going on, correct, but the on scene work is being done overnight, isn't it? a lot of that particular with the sensor reading is being done overnight medina staff says those markers are actually a fix to the pavement with an adhesive. they have to change over to movable cones. they also have to install signs and roadside tolling equipment, but that work will also be done overnight. i just see that in other parts of the bay area if there's construction overnight, they put up the cones and they do it overnight and by the morning, they're gone. why can't you do that? i think what we're trying to do is to make sure that we don't add confusion to when we start to go through the testing cycle and in addition when we start

ask your doctor about entresto for heart failure. searching for a hit and run suspect linked to one of the first deadly hit and runs of this year abc 7 news reporter. dustin dorsey has the latest on the investigation and tells us what transportation officials need to make the streets safer for drivers and pedestrians. as san jose continues its record pace of traffic deaths on city streets the first few weeks of the year really set the tone for what was to come police opened five fatal crash investigations by january 12th, the fifth involved a 38 year old man who died crossing center road, the case remains unsolved the most important portion of this investigation. is that the driver that night did not stay at the scene and fled the area today. we're revealing new footage in new images of that suspect vehicle, which we believe to be an early 2000s to yoda tacoma to will drive two door with an extended cab the hit and run represents one of 20 involving

crashes that resulted in serious injury or death in san jose from january through july according to the latest department of transportation data investigators. say san jose resident quinn van was crossing center road about 300 feet from the crosswalk at the intersect with capital expressway late on january 7th. he crossed over the lanes and the median before he was hit by this truck shown here. surveillance footage just before the accident van died days later and police are still searching for key witness information a family member now has lost someone and it's not have closure understand why this happened. the only person who truly knows why this happened is out in the wind and should come forward on top of a lack of closure for the family and an unsolved investigation hit and runs pose an extreme challenge to the dot with each fatal crash. the dot says they rely on the completed police report in order to create solutions without knowing what happened the dot cannot accurately make our road safer. it could have been driver error.
