districts. and look both ways the controversial decision in california that could have drivers on edge. from abc news in new york. this is america this morning. good morning, everyone. i'm andrew denberg. i'm jacqueline late and for regaining this morning we begin with the aftermath of hurricane ian. rising death toll and now new questions for authorities. and as of this morning, ian's death toll is up to at least 85 people, any one of them in florida and four in north carolina. there are around 700,000 homes and businesses in florida that are still without power. enormous damage done in florida is perhaps best illustrated by these before and after pictures. from above our damage estimate says ian's price tag could be around $60 billion, but it's too soon to tell if that number could go up. president biden visits puerto rico today to view hurricane damage he's going to florida on wednesday. it comes as officials are facing new criticism about the warnings that were issued

ahead of ian. this morning search and rescue efforts are still underway in parts of florida. over the weekend responders took to the air plucking people from rooftops. evacuating barrier island residents by boat after ian wiped away roads leading to the mainland. hello crews working around the clock searching for survivors we got here the morning after the storm and started conducting rescues. the white house says more than 2300 people have been rescued. so far, hundreds of thousands are still without power throughout the state cell phone and internet service, also down for many complicating those rescue efforts happens is we can't call the people here and say hey, are you ok? go and check some water for you volunteers bringing much needed food and water to those in need. this man now trying to leave the area after riding out the hurricane, nobody really had a chance to get all our stuff. together and go anywhere. andrew

wick rode out the storm on his boat docked at fort myers marina, he says once the storm started, he regretted the decision immediately and his boat soon started to sink started going down, so i jumped . i couldn't jump left. i had to jump straight back onto the dock. and ran as far as i could to the first vote on the dock, rode out the storm on that boat for 12 hours and made it out unharmed, with the death toll in florida, reaching at least 81. many now questioning of authorities waited too long to issue evacuation orders. lee county sheriff where at least 42 people were killed, the most of the state defiant as he addressed the criticism. we did what we had to do. at the exact same time, i wouldn't have changed anything. and i know being in those meetings from the very minute this storm was very unpredictable. governor ron de santis defended officials at a news conference over the weekend as that storm started to shift. then they took that data, and then they acted appropriately and coming up in a few minutes. the new tropical threats brewing
