♪ announcer: building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc7 news. kristen: i love that sound, the unmistakable sound of airplane speeding over the bay. good evening. you are watching abc seven news at 11:00. even if you did not see them, you likely heard them in san francisco today. the blue angels took over the sky for awesome aerial acrobatics. the stunts and flyovers are the headline of the san francisco fleet week. our reporter soaked it all in. reporter: it has become one of san francisco's most popular and

loudest traditions. the blue angels airshow, headlining fleet week. >> i'd like the noise. reporter: scott richardson came out with his parents and son. san francisco fleet week started in 1981 by mayor dianne feinstein and has grown into the largest annual celebration of the armed forces in the country. >> they have been on the other side of the break. he loved to go to the blue angels, so we keep going. reporter: the airshow is an annual tradition for her family, but this year, she says the fog made it hard to see and may have shortened the show. anything different this year that stood out? >> the fog. and it was cold. reporter: fleet week is expected to draw more than one million visitors to san francisco and generate close to $10 million in revenue for the city as it emerges from the pandemic.

>>, the kinds of things you see on the tv. it is great to see it in person. reporter: this is her second time it fleet week. the weather was an issue for some, but that was not his main complaint. >> it was kinda crazy. that is ok. it is san francisco. we understand. reporter: will you still do it? >> for sure. reporter: spen h\ was excited, t admits he was a little disappointed. mainly because of the fog. >> i was hoping to see more. reporter: letdown? >> that event. betterment. maybe next year. i will come back next year. dion: talking about that fog, things were delayed for a bit, but let's hope things look good tomorrow spencer? spencer: yes. overnight, here is a forecast. lots of low clouds and fog overnight with lots of drizzle near the coast and maybe even

some on shore. by midday tomorrow, skies should be sunny. maybe some lingering low clouds of the golden gate, like today, but they will probe burner weight and be thinner than today . low temperatures in the mid 50's. tomorrow, noon, sunny skies just about everywhere including the bay and golden gate. it could be a thin layer of low clouds lingering at the golden gate, but i expect viewing conditions tomorrow to be slightly better than today. dion: we will take slightly. thank you. for all of the fleet week information you need, there is only one place. watch the airshow's life from anywhere with the abc7news app and abc7news.com. you will also be able to find a full schedule of the other fleet week related festivities. moving on to the north bay, i solemn milestone was remembered today. five years ago, a raging wildfire displays thousands in sonoma and napa county and killed dozens of people.

wildfire survivors gathered to remember what was lost and how far the community has moved forward since the tragedy. our news reporter brings us the story from santa rosa. >> it was a matter of minutes, and he had to act and go. reporter: he is wearing the same clothing the same day his world turned upside down in 2018 was a fire force more than 100,000 people to evacuate, leaving neighborhoods in ruins did his home was destroyed. >> every since the fire happened, from the very next day , you almost felt like you were sleepwalking through life, up until the time you have your house back. reporter: the fire was destructive and deadly, killing 40 across the north bay, including 24 in sonoma county. >> [indiscernible] reporter: the victim's names were read out loud at this emotional ceremony, marking five years since the fire. >> we were notified by the sound

of the wind, the branches snapping, the propane tanks exploding. >> [indiscernible] reporter: the scene of chaos as first responders tried moving residents to safety after electronic alert systems failed to notify some in harm's way. supervisor james court acknowledged mistakes were made. >> i am sorry we were not where we needed to be to help you in that time. reporter: the fire department says lessons have been learned. >> yes, we absolutely look at things much differently now, how we respond, how we alert, how we warn. reporter: this was hopper avenue and coffee park after the fire, the neighbor unrecognizable, hundreds of homes gone. today, the same stretches returning from the ashes. since the fire, about 90% of the homes and coffee park have been rebuilt, but not all like this was still under construction. meantime, others are so struggling to get back home. >> it is incredible it has taken

this long. reporter: this was her home after the fire. five years later, her new house is almost done a bit of move-in date is unknown. >> it has been a process, especially with covid, with shortages, and all of that. everything affects it. reporter: many agreed that firestorm tragedy has galvanizes community, making it stronger. >> it is a bit clichéd tuesday, but the county has emerged stronger, better prepared, and more resilient. dion: new at 11:00, fire burning along 580 and oakland temporarily shut down westbound lanes tonight. oakland fire says the blade started as a car fire at 9:00 and jumped up a hill near 30 5th avenue and burned near some homes, but firefighters were able to keep it from spreading. also in the east bay, 30 five ave, shooting cap one person in the three others wounded. it all happened just after 1:30 this morning in the area of

durant and telegraph, less than two blocks from campus. uc berkeley says the shooting happened during the fight and no students were involved and there is no connection to the campus. people nearby describe the scene. >> the whole street was just crazy. it was like everyone was everywhere. i was freaking out. i cold my homie, like, what was happening. >> it was gunshots. eight rounds. we ran inside because we wanted, we were not sure what was going on. dion: there have been no arrests. meantime, shooting in oakland claimed a life and injured a second person. it happened last night near bankrupt and 40 5th avenue aware policing when men died in the second was wounded, but is expected to survive. it is the 102nd homicide of the year. this is the third straight year oakland has seen at least 100 homicides.

a 14-year-old girl from oakland is missing. police are asking for help to locate ingrid fernandez here. she was last seen at 10:00 a.m. yesterday on olive street and 90 2nd avenue. fernandez was wearing a blue and black shirt and blue jeans. police say she is at risk due to her age. all right, switching gears and moving to sports in the warriors of the big news, draymond green, speaking for the first time since punching jordan poole at practice on wednesday. >> joins us now. we heard from green. chris: yes. an unfortunate situation for a team that recently returned from what was essentially a great team bonding trip in tokyo for those games last weekend. here is the video from wednesday. you see green walking up to him, some words are said, then he punches him in the face. an ugly situation. green met the media and tried to explain today. >> the video you saw, the way it

dion: in the north bay, officers have three suspects in burglaries. police say $10,000 of merchandise was stolen from stores. the three suspects have related prior arrests and are currently

being held at the sonoma county jail. well, it is official, we are an election season, with san francisco opening ballot drop boxes across the city. they will be open 24/7 until election day, november 8. you can find location for these drop boxes online. people can return their vote by mail ballots to the post office at the city hall voting center on october 11 and at any other other places on election day. solidarity for abortion rights, as women and allies marched through the streets of san francisco. >> we do not talk enough about abortions, and i do believe that shame and guilt i felt withholding my story for so many years, impacted my health. dion: the rally aimed to fight new abortion laws. people join together with signs, demanding legal abortion care for the nation. this follows governor newsom's

recent political pants -- stance on abortion laws in states, that started in the square and included speakers to the hall. meantime, dozens of supporters of a minority group in afghanistan also gathered at city hall today to protest increased attacks. >> forngn people -- dion: last week, a suicide bomber in kabul targeted young women preparing for the university exams. the united nations is 35 people were killed and 82 wounded. today, the demonstrators are calling for the genocide to stop. >> the genocide has to be recognized by the united nations. and an investigation has to be started. dion: there have been several attacks over the past year at places of worship, schools, and other public places. so far, there has been no response from the ruling taliban. the number of gray whales off the west coast of america continues to decline. the most recent count is down

38% from its peak seven years ago. those whales also had the fewest calves since they began counting verse 20 years ago. the increasing number of gray ♪ whales washed up on beaches led the agency to declare an unusual mortality event in 20. you can see them in san francisco bay, where many whales appear malnourished. swinging for a good cause, more than 100 golfers teed off at a golf course today in san francisco. check it out. this is the fourth fundraiser hosted by sf pride. they got participants fired up for the event. each foursome was paired with a professional golfer and a scramble format. the event raises funds for sf pride and local organizations. last year brought in nearly

in the south and eastern parts of the country. president zelenskyy claiming ukrainian military has retaken 300 square miles of russian occupied territory this week alone and as fears of a nuclear attack escalate, resident buying warning of the risk of nuclear war saying we have not faced the prospect of armageddon since the cuban missile crisis. the white house walking back his remarks saying there is no evidence that vladimir putin is planning to use nuclear weapons imminently. dion: it may be time for facebook users to change their password. one million users were warned their login information may have been hacked. metta researchers found 400 malicious apps designed to steal usernames and passwords. they were disguised as photo editors or downloadable games.

all of those apps have been reported. a horse that ran away to run wild is back home tonight eight years later. shane adams says he lost his horse while camping in utah. the horse broke free and made a run for it joining a herd of wild mustangs. he searched for the horse for years but gave up. a few weeks ago the bureau of land management was rounding up some mustangs noticing that one of them looked at different. he had a brand of a horse reported missing eight years ago. they were then reunited. >> it is crazy. he still acts the same. dion: unbelievable. he is now 18 years old and you can see that he is underweight. adams is working on getting him back to health. there is growing concern as the

cooler weather returns and flu season approaches, experts are worried that the number of flu cases will be higher. that combined with covid and possible new variants has health officials concerned. reporter: a warning from health experts warning -- urging americans to get their flu shot as well as their covid-19 booster. >> we should anticipate that we may get another variant that would emerge at would elude the immune response that we have gotten from infection and/or from vaccination. reporter: dr. anthony fauci not alone in issuing this warning. others say it is possible a new variant put emerge that evades vaccines. as for the flu, the country experienced low levels in the last two years. this was due two behavioral

dion: is a fun filled week and including a highly anticipatory -- anticipated food festival. the st. maarten armenian church hosted a food festival on friday and saturday. there was a huge turnout. it included food and dancing celebrating the armenian culture. the festivities ended about 80 minutes ago. history is in the making at walt disney world resort this weekend which is hosting hbcus for the

first time. they brought their high-stepping and signature sounds to the heart of the magic kingdom. reporter: this is the type of show we are used to seeing at the magic kingdom but hbcu week is bringing a new event to main street. >> they are not ready for us. reporter: sarah banner is ready. >> i got a flight at 6:00 this morning. reporter: for something she never thought she would see. >> for her to perform at a parade here, she was overwhelmed. reporter: her daughter marching down main street with a band from north carolina a&t. >> they always bring it every time, everywhere, every stage and every field. reporter: one of four bands from historically black colleges to rock the crowd. >> that is amazing.
