sonoma county has emerged stronger, better prepared and more resilient. karina: resilient and recovery. north bay communities coming together to celebrate rebuilding efforts five years after deadly wildfires. good morning, it is sunday, october 9. i am karina nova. we start with something important for today, look at the weather. here is frances dinglasan. we are talking about the importance of the weather this weekend, we have hundreds of thousands of people in town for fleet week. frances: normally we have the best weather around this time of year. yesterday, fog was an issue. take a look at said the golden gate bridge, we are off to a better start right now. the marine layer is not as dense , here is the day planner. temperatures in the 50's over the next few hours, sunrise at

7:12. cloudy throughout the coast, similar to yesterday. sonny inland, temperatures are cooler in the bay. around the bay, low 70's. comfortable and mild. at the beach and coast, temperatures in the low 60's. we are tracking the fog, which looks like it will make a reappearance for today's air show. just how much of it, i will let you know with the latest forecast. karina: in the north bay, a solemn milestone is being remembered. five years ago, a raging wildfire displaced thousands in sonoma and napa counties and killed dozens of people. survivors gathered to remember what was lost and how for the community has moved forward since that tragedy. cornell barnard brings us the story from santa rosa. >> it was a matter of minutes, you had to act and you had to go. reporter: he was wearing the same close he did the day his world turned upside down, over 8, 2017, when a fire storm

forced more than hundred thousand people to evacuate, leaving neighborhoods like coffee park in ruin. his home was destroyed. >> ever since the fire, from the very next day, you felt like you were sleepwalking through life. up until the time you have your house back. reporter: the fire was destructive and deadly, killing 40 people across the north bay, including 24 in sonoma county. the victim's name is read out loud at this emotional ceremony, marking five years since the fire. >> we were notified by the sound of the wind, the branches snapping, the propane tanks exploding. reporter: a scene of chaos as first responder try moving residents to safety, after electronic alert systems failed to notify some in harm's way. a supervisor acknowledged that mistakes were made. >> i am sorry we were not were related to be to help you in

that time. the fire department says lessons have been learned. >> yes, we absolutely look at things much different way now. how we respond, how we alert, how we warn. reporter: this was coffee park after the fire. the neighborhood left unrecognizable, hundreds of homes gone. today, the same stretch is returning from the ashes. since the fire, about 90% of the homes here have been rebuilt. not all, like this home still under construction. other residents are still struggling to get back home. >> it is incredible it has taken this long. reporter: this was her home after the fire. five years later, her newly rebuilt house is almost done. but a move-in date is still unknown. >> it has been a process, especially with covid shortages, all of that. everything effects it. reporter: many agree that tragedy has galvanized this community, making it stronger. >> it is a bit cliché to say,

but sonoma county has emerged stronger, better prepared and more resilient. reporter: cornell bernard, abc 7 news. karina: in the east bay, we are learning new details about the shooting near uc berkeley. it is a story we brought to yesterday morning. one person died and three others were hurt. the university said the shooting happened during a fight in the area of telegraph avenue. they say no students were involved, and there is no connection to the campus. people nearby described the scene. >> the whole street was crazy. everyone was everywhere. i was freaking out, i called my homie like, what is happening? >> we heard something i thought was fireworks, but it was not. it was gunshots, it was eight rounds. we ran inside taco bell, we weren't sure what was going on. karina: as of now, no arrests have been made. the shooting in oakland left a person dead and another injured. it happened friday night near 40

5th avenue. one man died, second was hurt it is expected to survive. it is the 102nd homicide of the year, this is the third straight year oakland has seen at least 100 homicides. oakland police are looking for a missing 14-year-old girl, this is a picture. her name is ingrid fernandez, she was last seen friday morning around 10:00 on olive street and 90 2nd avenue. she was wearing a red and black shirt and blue jeans. police say she is at risk because of her age. a fourth and final vigil will be held tonight in merced to remember the family found dead after they were kidnapped. ♪ karina: last night, the community gathered for the third straight night. the youngest victim was only eight months old. her parents and an uncle also died. police have arrested two brothers. the first suspect was allegedly a former employee for the

families trucking business. he was charged with four counts of murder. his brother was also arrested on conspiracy charges. happening today in san francisco, a rally to show solidarity with the people of iran. it comes after a young woman in iran died in custody of the so-called morality police. since then, the regime has brutally crackdown on protesters and has shut down internet access. activists are demanding democracy, women's rights and basic human rights. the protest is set to start at 11:00 this morning outside san francisco city hall. in the north bay come officers detained three suspects involved in burglary that multiple dick's sporting goods locations. about $10,000 worth of merchandise was stolen from stores in petaluma, santa rosa and roseville. the three suspects have related prior arrests and are currently being held at the sonoma county jail. today is the last chance to catch a glimpse of the blue

angels. the final air show is set for this afternoon. the stunts and flyovers are considered the headline of the annual san francisco fleet week, which is so exciting. reporter: it has become one of san francisco's most popular and loudest traditions. the blue angels air show, headlining san francisco fleet week. scott richardson came up with his parents and son. what was your favorite trick? >> the loop. reporter: fleet week was started in 1981 by the mayor. it has grown to the largest annual celebration of united states armed forces in the country. >> we live on the other side of the bay, he loved to go to the blue angels. so we keep going. reporter: it is an annual tradition. this year, the fog made it hard to see and may have shortened

about 50 workers. the ceo says they are getting rid of positions that are quote no longer aligned with our core business priorities. this is the second set of layoffs for impossible foods this year. in january, they laid off 15 employees. this coming black friday, you will not be able to shop and store at rei. the sports company announced it will no longer be open on black friday permanently. instead, it will pay employees for the day to spend time outside doing anything besides shopping. you will still be able to place online orders, but they will not be processed until the next day. a horse that ran away to run wild is back home, eight years later. shane adams since he lost his horse while camping in utah. the horse broke loose and made a run for it. he joined a herd of wild mustangs and adam searched for him for years. eventually, he gave up. a few weeks ago, the bureau of land management was rounding up a herd of mustangs and noticed

one of the horses look different. he had a brand that matched the horse adams reported missing eight years ago. the two were reunited. >> it is crazy. he still ask the same. -- acts the same. he acts like nothing ever happened. karina: the horse is 18 years old and underweight. the owner is working to get him back to health. a tablecloth with history written all over it has san francisco ties and is going up for auction. you can see a sketch in yellow penned by john lennon, doodles from paul mccartney and all four of the beetle signatures. the tablecloth belongs to the owner of simpson's catering, who served the beatles food back in 1966 before their last concert. the tablecloth was stolen from his business and was missing for decades until someone recently returned it to his grandson.

karina: abc7news is celebrating his heritage month, we are highlighting to latino winemakers who are trying to make a name for themselves. the next generation of winemakers in california. reporter: the valley is known as one of the most productive agricultural regions in california. the warm weather, combined with the cool coastal breeze, make it an ideal place to harvest grapes for wine. it is here where we met mcgill,

whose parents came from mexico as farmworkers. >> i think that is where i get my hard work mentality from. reporter: he supervises a crew also invested in making great wine. >> [speaking foreign language] reporter: they are the assistant winemaker, but also makes winds for other people and has his own brand. they are all made in one facility. >> most of our clients just have a vineyard, or they source from other vineyards. some did not even have their vineyard. we take care of the entire winemaking process for them. reporter: after the grapes are crushed, the magic begins with the fermentation process. in this case, because he is making pinot noir, it is

combined. >> it raises up, because the co2 created by the yeast. they are trying to mix it back in. reporter: the process of punching down is done to to three times a day for about a week. a larger amount, in this case 300 gallons, requires large steel tanks. the wine is then circulated in a process called pump over. from here, the final product will be stored in either french or american oak barrels. the difference between french and american oak? >> the main difference is flavor. different flavor profiles in terms of spice for vanilla. -- for vanilla. -- or vanilla. reporter: it is somewhat serendipitous he became a winemaker. a business maker -- major, he happened to take a wine production class. >> the one class changed my life. reporter: he enrolled at cal

poly then interned, where the owner allowed him to make his own wine. he is among the 46 or so mexican-american winemakers registered in california. uc berkeley professor is writing a book about some of these winemakers, and why they have been so late to the game. >> acquiring the money to lease, then maybe buy a plot and another plot. meanwhile, you're managing the vineyards of others, making for a steady income in order to be able to actually make your wine. reporter: only a few have had the kind of family expertise to know about winemaking. their grandparents arrived in 1967 and eventually went into the wine business. >> you hear my cousin say we have wine in our veins, it continues to the next generation, which is myself. reporter: but being part of the family did not guarantee a job at the winery. >> you need to go to college and

get an education. you are not going to be working in the field. reporter: after college, she interned with another winemaker. today, she runs a custom crush facility with about half a dozen clients. >> picking up a nice color. reporter: her father's and his brothers own another winery, they process their wine at the facility. being a woman winemaker has not been easy. at first, a few clients wanted to deal only with her father. now, she never refers to him as dad in front of others. he is simply armando, just another client. >> like anything else, there is hurdles in any job. you figure it out and either jump over it or go around it, make it work. reporter: the professor says these young winemakers are trying hard to make a name for themselves in a very competitive field. >> people expected to be cheap,

causing several railway cars to catch fire. resulting in a partial collapse. >> this is a stunning victory for the ukrainians on the battlefield, but it is also a stunning blow to putin and the russian people. reporter: the satellite images show the extensive damage. fire and smoke can be seen coming from a tinker train on the railway line. a less substantial part of the roadway lays partially submerged. vladimir putin is ordering a commission to investigate the explosion and russia's deputy prime minister visited the site saturday to see the damage firsthand. he was seen discussing repair plans with workers. putin also ordering tighter security for the bridge, and for the infrastructure supplying power to the crimean peninsula. ukraine not claiming direct responsibility for the attack. but, in an address, resident zelenskyy references the explosion describing crimea as cloudy, but warm, adding

legal abortion care throughout the country. this comes after governor newsom's recent political stance going against abortion laws and several other states. san francisco supporters of a minority group in afghanistan gathered to protest increased attacks in the country. >> last week, a suicide bomber targeted mostly young women who were preparing for the university exams. the u.n. says 35 people were killed and 82 wounded. yesterday's demonstrations called for the genocide to stop. >> the genocide has to be recognized by the united nations . an investigation has to be started. karina: there have been several attacks in the last year at places of worship and other public places. so far, no response from the ruling taliban. this morning, there is a growing concern as the cooler weather arrives and flu season

approaches. health experts say the number of flu cases is expected to be higher. only 49% of americans plan to get a flu vaccine. that combined with covid and possible new variants has health officials concerned. reporter: a warning from health experts urging americans to not only get their flu shot, but also their covid-19 booster. >> we should anticipate that we very well may get another variant that would emerge that would allude the immune response that we have gotten from infection and/or from vaccination. reporter: dr. fauci not alone in issuing the warning. the white house covid-19 coordinator since it is possible new variant could emerge that invades our vaccines, including the new bivalent booster. as for the flu, the country experienced low levels of cases the past two years. this was mostly due to behavioral changes during the pandemic, including avoiding large gatherings and asking up.

karina: swinging for a good cause. with the 100 golfers teed off at harding park golf course for the annual sf pride pro-am golf tournament. this is the fourth fundraiser hosted by sf pride. participants were fired up for the event. each participant was paired the professional golfer. they raise funds for sf pride and local lgbtq charities and organizations. last year, they brought in nearly $100,000. abc 7 is a proud sponsor of sf pride and was the exclusive broadcast partner of the pride parade in june. a home in central california is winning halloween with its epic light show. ♪

slightly cooler temperatures for some neighborhoods. temperatures are steady all week long, i will show that with the accuweather 7 day forecast. the winds pick up and peek at 4:00 this afternoon to 20, 25 miles per hour around the bay. 25 oakland, near 15 through parts of the north. the forecast animation, 7:00 this morning, widespread low clouds. by midday, they pulled back to the coast. here is what it looks like at 3:00 for the blue angels airshow. even though we will see low clouds in san francisco, what you will notice compared to yesterday, it is not as thick, not as dense. that means better viewing conditions. though it will still be chilly because of the breeze, than the fog and low clouds will spread inland once again. possibly even making a deeper push through the delta and highs range from 60's to mid 80's, near 90 in some spots.

we do not think we will see too many 90's today. san francisco, height is 65. that is why you need a jacket. look for comfortable 70's around the bay, san mateo 73, fremont 75. plenty of, 86 in concord, antioch and livermore. overnight tonight, it is going to be foggy once again. we could see drizzle, little patches of green along the coast. santa rosa and at the north bay will be the coolest areas where we could see the fog develop once again. accuweather 7 day forecast, morning drizzle but a dry and mild afternoon. less fog for the airshow. not fog free, you will still have to deal with it. i think it will be better today, compared to yesterday. for indigenous peoples' day, not too much change. slightly cooler on tuesday, slightly warmer this weekend.

[szasz] we take care of ourselves constantly; it's important. we walk three to five times a week, a couple miles at a time. - we've both been taking prevagen for a little more than 11 years now. after about 30 days of taking it, we noticed clarity that we didn't notice before. - it's still helping me. i still notice a difference.
