well, as putin ramps up his brutal bombing of ukrainian cities, president biden overnight saying, he thinks that the russian president is a, quote, rational actor. but saying he is one who greatly miscalculated russia's military strength and the fight of the ukrainian people. but despite russia's desperation now, biden says he does not think putin will ultimately use a nuclear weapon. as russia escalates its offensive and putin continues to threaten a nuclear attack president biden overnight warning of the risks of this moment. >> the miscalculation could occur. no one can be sure what would happen and it could end in armageddon. >> reporter: putin said he isn't bluffing about the potential use of nuclear weapons, but biden disagrees saying despite russia's setbacks on the battlefield in ukraine, he doesn't think putin will actually go that far. >> i don't think he will, but i think it's irresponsible for him to talk about it. i think he is a rational actor who has miscalculated significantly. >> reporter: in a cnn interview

the president asked if he had instructed the pentagon to game out a nuclear scenario just in case. >> the pentagon didn't have to be asked. >> reporter: the war in recent days escalating to new heights. russia bombarding civilian targets and critical infrastructure across ukraine for three straight days. firing more than 100 missiles and dozens of drones. killing at least 19 people, some of the strikes captured in these videos circulating online. the united nations condemning the attacks as particularly shoking. biden tuesday joining the g7 leaders for an emergency meeting with ukrainian president zelenskyy. the allied leaders are pledging to stand with ukraine for as long as it takes but zelenskyy's urging them to do more. [ speaking in non-english ] calling for more sanctions and air defense systems. the u.s. tuesday sending four more longer range missile systems along with more advanced air defense systems from germany. the big question now is how does putin get out of this? what is his off-ramp as the president has said?

biden last night said putin could end the war right now. he could argue to the russian people that he set out what he intended to and bring russian soldiers home. but, robin, based on what we are seeing on the ground right now it is clear putin's strategy for now is to double down and escalate. >> it does seem to be the case. and mary, president biden also said he has no plans to meet with putin during the upcoming summit unless it's about the release of brittney griner? >> reporter: robin, the president said he has no intention of meeting with vladimir putin at the summit next month. biden making it very clear that there will be no one-on-one negotiation about ukraine saying the allied leaders have agreed there will be no discussion of ukraine without ukraine present. but biden said if putin wants to discuss other issues like the release of wnba star brittney griner, well, biden says he's willing to meet with him. robin? >> okay, mary, thanks so much. michael? >> thank you, robin. for the latest on the war in ukraine let's go to our chief foreign correspondent ian pannell on the ground in kharkiv. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah, good morning,

michael. more russian attacks overnight and this morning, across ukraine. in the south they reportedly were targeted with 100 russian shells hitting apartment blocks as well as shops and two kindergartens. zaporizhzhia, again coming under russian bombardment. the ukrainian emergency services releasing this incredible footage of a family being rescued from under the rubble of their home today. the rescue team essentially trying to bring out a young girl squeezing through a small opening from the basement followed by her mom and dad. incredible rescue. around the country power has been restored to most areas hit by russia. remember, the russian attacks were in response to that bombing of the bridge in crimea. well, this morning, russia's domestic intelligence services saying eight people have been arrested in connection with that explosion. meanwhile, putin's troops are increasingly reliant on these aerial attacks as their land forces are pushed back and as they're pushed back, more evidence emerging of alleged atrocities committed. we're being shown another

apparent mass grave where more than 50 bodies have been recovered so far, among them a 1-year-old child and her family. tragic. george? >> that is just horrific. ian, thanks very much. we turn to our interview with georgia senate candidate herschel walker. his campaign has been rocked by allegations that he paid for a girlfriend's abortion despite publicly opposing abortion rights. and this race could decide which party controls the senate. abc newslive anchor linsey davis is here with the interview. good morning, linsey. >> good morning to you, george. herschel walker has long been known for his strength, speed and agility, but now he is training for perhaps the most grueling competition of his life. and despite the latest allegations, walker says he's ready for this moment, that god has been preparing him for it his entire life. [ crowd chanting ] >> reporter: top republican leaders are flocking to the peach state to show their support for georgia's embattled republican senate candidate herschel walker. >> what we got to do is stand up. >> reporter: the former football star is locked in a heated battle with democrat incumbent senator raphael warnock.

what happens when the vote is cast in four weeks could very well determine which party controls the senate. the close race got even tighter when walker's campaign was rocked by allegations that the staunchly anti-abortion heisman trophy winner paid for a former girlfriend's abortion. inside this georgia gym, he sat down with us for his first network interview where he pushed back on the claims against him. >> if i can just get you to say a yes or a no, did you ever have a conversation with this woman at any time about an abortion? >> no. >> did you ever to your knowledge give money to pay for the cost of an abortion? >> no. >> is she lying? >> yes, she's lying. yeah, she's lying. yes, she's lying. >> reporter: abc news has not independently confirmed the woman's account, but "the daily beast" and "the new york times" report that she showed them a receipt from the abortion clinic, a $700 check she says is from walker and a get well card she says he sent her after the abortion. overnight "the washington post" reported she claimed she had to

press walker to pay for the abortion saying, both of us did this. we both know how babies are made. >> the same woman says that you have a 10-year-old son who you've only seen three times. is that true? >> well, that's not true. i've seen him a little bit more than that, but that's one of the things i don't get into because they make it difficult for me to see him. >> reporter: but he says he's been very present in his son christian's life which is why he says he's perplexed by this video he released last week. >> family values, people. he has four kids. four different women. wasn't in the house raising one of them. >> christian says, though, that you're an absent father. do you disagree? >> oh i love christian and that's what's so funny. i love christian and i've always loved christian. >> i don't think anybody is questioning your love for your son. >> well, they know i've been with my son through everything, and that's what i'm saying. >> there is an interview you did last year with diamond and silk where you said as far as talking about being very critical of

black fathers being absent and you said, you know, it may be that you have to leave the mother, but don't leave the child. >> right. >> do you feel that you have been there for all four? >> yes, i have. if they needed me, they called. >> tell me about your position on abortion. >> my position, i'm pro-life. i believe -- i believe in -- i believe in life. i'm a christian. i believe in life. >> no exceptions? >> well, i believe in the georgia heartbeat bill. you know, that has exceptions in it. >> in the case of incest or rape or the mother's life is at stake, if she brings the pregnancy to full term. >> the georgia heartbeat bill accounts for all that. that's what i said. it's in a democratic process of the people and that's what i've said. i said, guys, i believe in life. i'm a christian. >> reporter: walker says his biggest accomplishment is his children and also this run for the senate. >> you're really passionate about this. >> i am. i told everyone, i'm not running

because i want to be a senator. i'm running because i'm sick and tired. people are dying. people can't eat because of the people in washington, what they're doing to people, and then they lie. this is not a new normal. let's get it straight. this is not a new normal. >> the emotion that you're feeling, where is that coming from? >> that comes from me being a competitor. that comes from me being a competitor. i worked and i'm ready for this. i'm ready for this. >> walker also talked about just how much of a mentor donald trump has been first in business and now in politics. in just two days walker will face off against senator raphael warnock in their only scheduled debate. george? >> so much on the line in that debate, linsey. this race is important in georgia. >> certainly could be crucial. fivethirtyeight is projecting democrats have a 66% chance of holding on to the senate after the midterms. take a look. if herschel walker wins in

georgia, the odds flip in republicans' favor and the gop would then have a 63% chance of taking back control, george. >> linsey davis, thanks. robin? now to new developments overnight in the case of the former police officer who shot a teen in san antonio who was eating a hamburger in a parking lot. he has been charged and has turned himself in to authorities. mola lenghi joins us now with the latest. good morning, mola. >> reporter: good morning, robin. yeah, 17-year-old erik cantu remains unconscious and on life support after being shot by former officer james brennand. body cam video released earlier this week shows brennand shooting cantu while the teen was eating in his car in a mcdonald's parking lot. brennand who was fired immediately after the shooting has now been charged with aggravated assault. he turned himself in to police on tuesday. the rookie officer who had been on the force for just seven months, reported that cantu's car had previously evaded him during an attempted traffic stop, prompting him to approach cantu at the mcdonald's.

investigators determined the use of force was unwarranted. the san antonio police chief insists it was inconsistent with the department's training. the police union says they will not represent him. he's due in court next month. michael? >> all right, thank you so much, mola, for that. now we turn to the investigation into the star nfl player who shoved a photographer to the ground following a tough loss. both the league and the police are looking into the incident and will reeve joins us now with more. good morning, will. >> good morning, michael. an investigation into this incident in kansas city, las vegas raiders star receiver davante adams shoved that photographer to the ground. he was leaving the field. as the game was ending, adams furiously smashing his helmet on the ground, dejected as his raiders took a crushing loss to patrick mahomes and the kansas city chiefs. he was headed to the locker room, when this man, a freelance photographer was headed the other direction. the 6'1", 216-pound adams bowling over the man and carrying on his way.

kansas city police now confirming the man filed a police report. he said he was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. investigators will coordinate with the applicable city or state prosecutor to determine any applicable charges. adams gave an apology postgame. >> i apologize to the guy, seen some guy running off the field and he ran, jumped in front of me coming off the field and i bumped into him and pushed him and he ended up on the ground i want to say sorry to him for that. that was just frustration mixed with anger and literally him just running in front of me and i shouldn't have responded that way. >> espn is reporting adams could face discipline from the nfl. george? >> okay, will, thanks very much. now to a new hotline launching to protect consumers. chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis is here with more about how it works. good morning, rebecca. >> good morning, george. these scams have become so prevalent and now here in new york city, they are launching a 24/7 scam hotline to help prevent consumers from falling victim.

they are ever increasing and they're guiding callers with resources once those scams have happened to you. it'll also provide information about techniques scammers are using to defraud people all in the hopes to decrease the money lost and stop these scams before they start, george. >> the ftc is calculating how much this costs consumers. >> and it does cost quite a bit. the federal trade commission says so far this year, the top type of fraud is impostor scams, meaning someone pretending to be a loved one or business who takes your money. with more than 360,000 reports, the median individual loss is $1,000 here and a jaw-dropping total loss of more than $1.3 billion. second most common, reported fraud is trouble with online shopping. that can be when a fake merchant takes your money but never delivers you the goods. nearly 150,000 reports of those. the median loss on that one, $186. total loss, $184 million. finally the third top type of fraud is investment scams. not as common, but people lose

more on these. the median individual loss is $4,000. the total loss a staggering $1.6 billion. george, a lot of this is happening on social media. people see the report. they think they're going to make a lot of money. they follow up. it's a scam. >> how do we protect ourselves? >> nypd's campaign has some great reminders. don't respond when you get calls or texts from unknown numbers. only go to official websites for businesses that you know to submit your personal information like your credit card. and the ftc is also telling us it is happy about this nypd campaign. report it, george. there's always the ftc.gov website for this too. >> rebecca jarvis, thank you so much. robin? all right, october baseball is in full swing with excitement on the diamond. definitely not in short supply. last night game one, nothing but a showdown until the end between the mariners and michael's houston astros. the astros were behind but take a look at how they pulled off the victory. >> alvarez launches, deep right field. and this one is gone!

justice. and this morning, it is official. adnan syed was wrongly convicted of murder. adnan syed, a free man this morning. all charges dropped against the once convicted murderer who was the subject of the wildly popular podcast "serial." >> this is a prepaid call from -- >> adnan syed. >> reporter: interviewed on a prison phone for the podcast and always maintaining his innocence for the 1999 murder of his high school ex-girlfriend, hae min lee. >> i mean, no way i had absolutely nothing to do with hae's murder. >> he is elated. he is joyful. there have been so many ups and downs over the past 23 years. so he is really just taking it all in, but he's incredibly grateful for all of the people who have supported him and believed in him over the years. >> congratulations! >> whoo! >> reporter: he got his first taste of freedom last month when a judge overturned his murder conviction after a year-long investigation revealed two other possible suspects and

accusations that former prosecutors withheld crucial evidence. he's been on house arrest ever since. seen here the day of his release, experiencing leftovers for the first time in decades. >> what are these? >> those are dumplings we got yesterday. >> reporter: now no longer on house arrest, no longer having to wear an ankle monitor. >> this is what we eventually expected would happen after he was released. we just didn't expect it to happen so quickly. >> reporter: his childhood friend who first brought his case to the "serial" creators speaking for the first time in an interview since the charges were dropped. >> he is the same person he was when he was -- when he was incarcerated at 17. he hasn't come out like a bitter, you know, angry person. he's come out the same, really kind, easy-going and just forgiving person. all these years, but he's just kind of been enjoying his freedom eating whatever he wants whenever he wants and lurking on social media and learning to use a laptop. it's been kind of a soft entry. >> reporter: the 41-year-old

spent more than half his life behind bars. now modern dna testing of new items at the crime scene revealed no dna from syed helping to secure his release. >> what has happened to adnan is tragic and horrible, but it is incredibly common. it has shined a light on a wrongdoing that happened to adnan, but happens to criminal defendants all over the country. >> syed's family, they are celebrating today, but we have to remember that he's not the only victim of injustice here. remember the family of the victim here, hae min lee. her family has now been told after 20 years that the person that killed their loved one is possibly still out there. and, george, as her brother put it in one of the hearings, this is not a podcast for me. this is real life and it's been a never ending 20 plus year nightmare. >> no question about that, t.j. thanks. let's bring in marilyn mosby, the state's attorney for the city of baltimore. thanks for joining us. so no dna, the dna test appears to be conclusive. are you convinced that syed had nothing to do with lee's killing?

>> when you consider all of the sort of major red flags, i mean, this case, we approached -- we were approached by the public defender's office. my sentencing review unit to modify the sentence under the juvenile restoration act which he qualified because he was a juvenile when convicted and spent 22 years in prison. our review quickly turned from making a mere recommendation for release to a re-investigation into claim of actual innocence because there were major sort of red flags. i mean, we saw this and as we started to delve into the case one of the things that we saw was that not all of the evidence was tested. and so the first round of dna testing, we didn't produce results, but following the completion as you've already noted of the second round of dna, we found that there was a dna mixture of multiple contributors and they excluded adnan syed. >> they excluded -- >> so when you couple that with all of the other major sort of reliability issues in this case

from, you know, the call into question the integrity from the beginning, the attorney general's office failing to disclose relevant information on the alternative suspects, one of whom threatened to kill and had motive to kill this victim, both of whom had a pattern of violence against women and sexual assault, the improper clearance of the suspects by investigators based on faulty polygraph tests and faulty cell site information that was used then that wouldn't be used today and the detective that was implicated in a wrongful conviction before. there are so many red flags and this was really the nail in the coffin that assured me, which is why i instructed my prosecutors to dismiss the case yesterday. >> so did the dna implicate those other two suspects? >> so it's an open and pending case and, you know, as you all have noted, you know, this family, this poor family, i have so much empathy for them. they have for 23 years believed this this was the individual that committed this heinous offense against their beautiful

loved one and now they're being told that, you know, evidence was withheld and now they're being told that we are going to release the individual that they believe committed this offense. so, you know, my top priority is to find the perpetrators of the individuals that killed this beautiful young woman and so it's an open and pending investigation and i have dedicated my time, my resources to ensuring that we receive justice on behalf of that family. >> you said the dna excluded syed. why can't you say whether or not it implicates the other two suspects? >> because it is an open and pending investigation and they have not yet been charged. >> are you going to formally declare syed's innocence? >> so this is a process by which the defense attorneys have to aail themselves and once they do, i intend to, yes. >> would this have all happened but for the "serial" podcast? >> to be honest with you, george, i never even listened to the "serial" podcast.

the influential panel of experts now saying all kids as young as 8 should be screened for anxiety. our chief medical associate dr. jennifer ashton will break this down. isn't this an update from what we heard earlier? >> you got it. it's exactly what it is, finalized guidance about screening for anxiety. let's get right to what they are recommending. they're recommending pretty much universal screening starting at age 8 for children including asymptomatic children, so that's children without any signs or symptoms of anxiety. why is this happening? mental health illnesses are on the rise particularly in teens and younger children and we have heard and taked about it so many times, it deserves attention. there is a growing mental health crisis in this age group so for something to be recommended as a screening test, the condition needs to be common, it needs to be treatable and screening tests need to be inexpensive and easy to implement, and this checks all those boxes. >> some folks, parents watching and saying, dr. jen, how can i determine whether my child has an issue with anxiety or it's

drivers, start your back pain? millions of people including me suffer from aches, shooting leg pain or stiffness while driving. so i've come to dearborn, michigan to talk to an engineer at ford who helps design seats. >> biggest mistake i see people making probably is just leaning forward. they get tense and they tend to be in traffic and they're sitting like this so you watch people drive and their back isn't supported at all on this. >> reporter: but to alleviate back pain she says you need to start on the floor. many cars now have movable pedals so drivers of any height can get their heels down. then adjust the seat so your knees aren't pressed against it. >> you want to have a couple of fingers between here ideally to say you don't have compression of the calf, back onto the seat. >> reporter: maybe the most important, your distance to the steering wheel. i heard there was one rule if you can rest your arms here, just as a distance measure, then you're probably right.

♪ all you people ♪ we're finally going to talk to dwayne johnson, "black adam" star. talk about a passion project. ten years in the making. how does it feel to have it come out? >> it feels so good and actually and i sent michael a picture last night, it's been 15 years since the very first announcement that i was going to play black adam so i mean, yeah, what a representation of trying to be resilient, pushing this thing and really fighting for this thing because my studio partners back then and really up until maybe even ten years ago as well, it was easier for them to just look at the justice league and continue to invest in the justice league and a little more challenging to look past the justice league to black

adam, a character who really the masses had no idea who it was to introduce the jsa as well, the justice society of america in the movie and what's interesting about the jsa and this was one of the many ways i helped our studio partners understand is the jsa predated the justice league, so the jsa was actually the very first superhero group in the world of and in the lore of superheroes and comics. there's rich history there. >> not overlooking it anymore obviously. >> no. >> i got a chance to see the movie yesterday. absolutely loved it. what i loved about it, i mean "black adam" is an anti-hero. you have to tap into your dark side which is something a little different for you so how were you able to tap into your dark side for this role? >> certainly a departure from anything i've done and in terms of -- i thought, well, let me try to not tap into a dark side because i feel probably energetically that's not a good place, healthy place to go. even though my friends who are

actors do it all the time. what i did was try to think of times in my past where i felt really constrained and like i had the chains on me and people telling me you can't do this, for example, when i first got to hollywood, many moons ago, i was told out of the world of pro wrestling, i was told, well if you want to make it. if you want to be a star the biggest stars at that time were george clooney and johnny depp and will smith, i was told then, you can't call yourself the rock, don't talk about pro wrestling. you got to lose weight. go on a diet. you're too big. don't go to the gym as much. a lot of things i was being told. >> wow. >> so and if you don't know any better you buy into it and i bought into it for a couple of years before i said this ends right now and i'll be myself and at least if i fail i'll fail being me so i tapped into that because a lot of that, those

maintain it? it took a while to film this. >> i wanted -- i felt like black adam, not demanded but commanded a body transformation and also, guys, black adam is the one, the movie of my career, the most important movie i've ever done. arguably will ever do and so i really wanted to challenge myself and really put in the time so i did work out and the challenging thing, michael and i were talking about it earlier, when an athlete prepares for an event, a game, olympics, whatever it is, you train very hard, you diet everything down and then you're there maybe in that space for maybe a few days, maybe a week. i had to maintain this for four months so it was really, really challenging? >> while filming all day. >> while filming all day in a suit that did not have muscle padding. [ laughter ] >> then i see his cheat meals and as much as you were working out you had to eat the cheat meals like that and you said this is the role of your career. >> yeah. >> but the greatest role you
