moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. it's a troubling trend school shooting hoaxes now impacting the bay area. i i left work and then i run here i just have to come here. active shooter reports on campus turning out to be empty threats tonight the calls that have damaging effects on students parents and teachers and the search now for who's responsible. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm on a dates. it may be a 10th day of class tomorrow at six local high schools all hit with false threats of a shooter on campus today forcing some campuses into lockdown obviously just terrifying in this day and age abc 7 news reporter. tim johnson has more of a panic and the investigation now underway moments of terror at

several schools across the bay area wednesday various police departments received calls throughout the day that there was an active shooter on the campuses. the claims turned out to be unfounded the sith schools located across the region in the east bay the south bay the peninsula and in san francisco. this is someone calls in any create a fake emergency and that emergency is supposed to be this extraordinary chain of events that causes a tremendous amount of panic in the response team whether it's law enforcement or security team and it creates havoc and panic. it's a tactic known as swatting at first. i know what was going on until i saw a lot of cops with their guns out and that's when i felt a little bit more safe, but swadding, isn't just happening here in the bay area. this is a trend nationwide and

mental health experts say it can cause some serious problems. it's incredibly traumatic and a lot of us have ptsd from the other school shootings that have happened dr. andrea zorbos is a clinical psychologist. she says the impact of swatting can be felt by teachers parents and students as well as by the wider community. it's something that doesn't just sort of go away when we know that the threat is over. it's something that sticks with us for a little while and while parents tell us they're thankful that no one was injured due to wednesday's false alarm. they worry we're swatting might take us next. i think that the worry is even stronger with these hoax calls because you fear that maybe the next time that something really is happening that perhaps they won't respond with such efficiency like they did today in south san francisco tim johns abc 7 news. and lieutenant kelly with the alameda county sheriff's office says his office believes today's calls are related to another series of calls from last month

and that one person may be behind this. there are now several law enforcement agencies working on the investigation and we were sending out critical updates as these threats were unfolding you can make sure you have the most up-to-date information through the abc 7 bay area app. just be sure to enable push alerts when you download new at 11 violence was the topic at tonight's berkeley unified school district meeting. it's the first time the board has met since two berkeley high school students were killed at a house party in oakland one board member said that they to do more. it's not an oakland issue and a richmond issue and berkeley gets the aftermath. it's like we are all part of the of the dynamics that are going on in our community and the more we can work together to get guns up our streets. and to deal with more of a community health approach, you know, the more i think we can come up with solutions.

violence was also the subject at last night's berkeley city council meeting after one person was killed and three others wounded. shooting near the uc berkeley campus over the weekend you at 11 there seems to be a strange smell moving through the town of crockett and it's not a good one. neighbors are complaining of a stink. they can't escape no matter what they try. and now they are demanding an end to it. it's been pretty bad for some very real perspective. the smell is so bad that even our own crew didn't want to stay out there very long. now. this is all centered near the c&h sugar factory in town abc 7 news reporter jr. stone. get into the source of the smell and has the potential concerns. this crockett wastewater treatment plant may look fine, but it cert smell fine.

nope. it smells like sewage here and it smell like that in different parts of town depending on the wind because of that residents are angry. we have been suffering with the smell outside as well as in it's like a slam in the face when you walk out the door. i have friends who's nose. noses are beginning to bleed and i have been experiencing nas. yeah. brain fog those at c&h sugar factory run the treatment facility as part of a long-term deal with the city. they say last month's extreme delay as you know in this economy, the things are not really available the lead time was months out. and we said no we do not want it months out. we want it like yesterday. so we throwed money at it and the earliest we could arrange was the earliest contractors started working on it was october 10th as of late

the way good for her, dan and amma. let me show you the rainfall. possibility 8 to 14 day outlook. this is from the climate prediction center. so below average rainfall is predicted for the eastern us near normal for the central and above average out west so that would include us there's a 33 to 50 percent chance that between october 20th, which is a week from today through the 26th sometime we would be looking at rainfall. so above average chances. that's not a done deal, but it's encouraging certainly some rain down in southern california as you look at live doppler 7, it was rain and thunderstorms earlier in the day all an association with that same low that's been sitting there high pressure once again diverting the storm track what we call the blocking high. that's what's been keeping us in the stagnant pattern, but there is a system out here that is going to work its way towards the west coast and eventually kick that low off the southern california coast out of here. that's when we can potentially
