killing of an armored truck guard. the suspect is now behind bars. police believe it was a calculated target. good evening. dan: this case was blown open by what police say was a full confession from the murder suspect. ama: new court records show that suspect is a former coworker of the victim. dan: j.r. stone is in the newsroom uncovering this really strange plan. reporter: this crime happened in the middle of daytime on a kaiser hospital campus.

a former investigator said with all the cameras there, it was just a matter of time before someone was arrested. john mendez was a military veteran, described as having an infectious personality. he was shot and killed working as an armored truck security guard for -- last month on kaiser hospitals campus. his truck was also robbed. >> a gross lack of respect for humanity. this guy died doing his job. for probably a few thousand dollars. reporter: san leandro police confirmed that suspected gunman -- is behind bars and will face a murder charge. as for how the arrest was made, investigators received investigation from the security company. he worked with the victim for five days and was familiar with the route.

that's according to court documents that also say they were terminated for stealing money from the company. with the help of surveillance video, phone records, and the fbi, police tracked them to his omen oakland through an associate of his that he was believed to have been with during the killing and robbery. court documents show he was in possession of a gold 2004 porsche. management from the secure company stated to investigators, it was suspicious that he now had a porsche and cell phone after money was stolen during this robbery and homicide. a search warrant was served in oakland. a short time later, police say there was a full confection -- confession. they located evidence inside of his residence that they say was used during the robbery. a former security consultant. >> you are looking at potentially two or three people

involved in this. they took a humans life for no valid reason whatsoever. reporter: this case has links to san leandro, oakland, and vacaville. police are seeking additional suspects. that former officer we talked with said credit should be given to the san leandro police department forgetting that confession and getting it quickly. back to you. ama: thank you so much. breaking news now. another deadly crash in the city of san jose. officers were called out to a residential neighborhood just before 7:30 tonight. the pedestrian, an elderly woman, was hit by a car and died at the scene. the driver stayed there to cooperate. it's the 53rd traffic death in san jose this year. 28th involving a pedestrian. dan: a juvenile suspect in custody tonight in connection with the shooting that left five

people dead in north carolina. ama: one of those victims is an off-duty police officer. another officer was shot but they've been released from the hospital. the call came in from a neighborhood a recreational outdoor trail early this evening after a three hour manhunt. police found the suspect barricaded in a barn where they arrested him. >> we have to wake up. i don't want other mayors standing here at the podium with their hearts breaking because people in their community died today. needlessly and tragically. dan: the person under arrest has been identified only as a white male juvenile. the motive for the shooting is still unclear. ama: dozens of crockett residence are demanding to know more about a foul odor present across the city. the crockett improvement association hosted a public meeting to address the situation

at the city's wastewater treatment plant. contra costa health recently detected elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide coming from the plant. it because the air to smell like sewage. the sugar factory runs the treatment facility. >> that represented of up here a month ago, telling us, i assure you the air is safe to breathe. ama: there's no evidence that the elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide are making anyone sick. repairs have been done to fix what's causing the smell but the odor could linger for at least another week. dan: abc7news is can -- committed to building a better area. a common prescription is suffering from a nationwide shortage. adderall is a key adhd treatment for many americans, especially kids. the question of access is where the story starts.

tim johns explains what's causing the problem. >> i've had to call multiple pharmacies and they won't talk to me. reporter: millions of americans have been having difficulty filling their prescriptions for immediate release adderall. >> it's a feeling of when you first wake up in the morning and you can't quite think. like that all day long. >> the red squares mean it's not available. reporter: it's a medication that is prescribed to treat conditions such as adhd and narcolepsy. the shortage recognized by the fda wednesday. the problem has multiple causes. issues with supply chains and labor shortages on top of the spike in demand. in a statement, the largest manufacturer of adderall in the u.s. said, the supply we are manufacturing right now is on pace to be consistent or greater than our supply at this time last year by the end of this year.

the shortage is also noticeable here in the bay area where local pediatricians say it is having an impact on aspects of their patient's lives. >> it can affect their day, their focus, their success in school, their ability to get organized and prepared for the day. reporter: if you can't find a pharmacy to fill the prescription, it's best to talk to your doctor about possible alternatives. other manufacturers report having adequate supply of other forms of the drug. some say that still isn't a solution for everyone. >> it takes a long time to find the right medicine for the child. to change it is really something that we half to tread lightly on. reporter: tim johns, abc7news. dan: police are investigating two more threats in the area against gilroy schools. police say possible bomb threats were circulated via electronic messaging today.

investigators checked out both schools. no one -- no exposer found. students and families were notified of both situations. six other bay area schools were swatted. it's unclear if there's any connection. ama: hillary clinton in san francisco to discuss reproductive rights. the nominee was part of a discussion about proposition one. if approved, it would add the right to an abortion directly into the state constitution. >> california, you get it delivered now. thank goodness you do. it does no good if people don't actually fill it out. so there has to be more energy, more visibility, and excitement about the opportunity to vote. ama: abortions have been legal in california for many years. the amendment would be ceballos but it comes at a time when other states are limiting and eliminating abortion access.

[applause] reporter: senior night at mount pleasant high school in san jose. thursdays ceremony marked the last home game seniors will ever play or chair. for 17-year-old victoria, it's a memory she never anticipated making. >> she saw a lot of movies. she saw these rituals in america that you do. she's really happy. she likes it. it gives her power after what she went through. reporter: her on assisted with translation, explaining the teen and her mother arrived from ukraine in may after the russian invasion. victoria's father wasn't allowed to leave and remains overseas. in san jose, the teen has immersed herself in schoolwork and cheerleading, a sport that

engineers are celebrating a breakthrough in robotics. dan: it could one day put extra pep in your step. you could say they are making great strides in mobility assistance. this is video from the university where researchers have developed exoskeleton boots for those who have trouble walking. it can make you feel up to 30 pounds lighter and it uses a motor to help boost you as you take each step. users were able to walk 9% faster while using 17% less energy. the boots are an ongoing work in progress but researchers hope that creating other models focused on improving balance and reducing joint pain will help a lot of people. ama: let's get to our weather. dan: sandhya patel is here with the weekend. sandhya: it's going to be different. that was cool video. i want to talk about la niña. winter is two months away. cooler than average conditions near the equatorial pacific is what we refer to la niña.

that's what's going on. that's been happening the last three years. it's three years and around now that we are looking at a la niña winter. this is the third time this has happened since 1950. typically favors wetter conditions in the pacific northwest with a blocking high-pressure system. we remained dry and so does much of the southern states. noah has just issued this update. 75% chance it will continue this winter. we transition to neutral conditions february through april of next year. the golden gate weather service has a really fascinating bit of information out. basically, just because we have a la niña winter doesn't mean it's going to be dry for california. it will depend on the strength of the la niña and it can vary from year to year. we want to show you what we now which is the drought. no change from last week. the central portion of the state and worst categories. locally, no change either. severe to extreme for the bay
