>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> a woman and young child shot in pittsburgh. a tough way to start the morning off. before we get to that story, we want to wish you good morning, saturday, october 15. we will have more on that story in a moment. let's start with the weather with lisa argen. lisa: good morning to you. we are starting out with low clouds and fog, lots of drizzle. you can see the fog is all the way up and down the coast. the ceilings are a bit higher. 56 in santa clara.

54 in napa. as we look at our visibility, four miles half moon bay. seven miles livermore. even with that cloud deck, we are insulated a bit this morning. count on the low clouds and gray start, upper 50's and 60's by noontime. notice mid 70's, bright and sunny, below average at the shoreline. we are talking another similar day sunday. a warm up for the week ahead, we will detail that ahead. >> thank you. a woman and young child were shot in pittsburgh friday night. abc 7 news was at the scene. there was a heavy police response. pittsburgh police say the victims were found just after 9:00 p.m. inside a truck that had crashed. children playing at the time say they heard three gunshots. >> it was scary because this is my first time just hearing one

of those and seeing it is actually real. >> we are told the child is expected to survive. the woman was critically injured. in san francisco, a man suspected of harassing women and girls across the city is under arrest. he was taken into custody hours after a warrant was issued. reporter tim johnson has more on how catching the suspect was a community effort. reporter: a sigh of relief for dozens of women around san francisco friday. abc 7 news was on scene when police arrested bill hobbs at aquatic park. >> a u.s. park ranger spotted the suspect. he called police who apprehended the suspect. reporter: police had received multiple reports matching a man of his description following women around the city. they posted photos of a man they believed to be hobbs >>.

he was harassing women, touching them, making inappropriate gestures. reporter: hobbs has allegedly victimized women in several locations across san francisco. the district attorney brooke jenkins says he faces several charges. >> felony false improvement, multiple battery charges. reporter: word of hobbs' titias caused heightened anxiety among women, but news of his arrest coming as a relief. >> in the neighborhood, it is surprising. i think of walking around the marina being like downtown disney. reporter: jenkins said she would push for pretrial detention. she thanked the victims for coming forward. >> it is to their credit that we have been able to do what we need to to proceed with charges. reporter: tim johns, abc 7 news. >> the stench that has plagued

crockett for weeks has canceled one event this weekend. the community harvest market will not be happening this sunday because of an ongoing health advisory for the city. hydrogen sulfide from a wastewater plant has been fouling up the air. in the south bay, another pedestrian struck and killed. police say a woman was hit thursday night in san jose. the driver did stop and is cooperating. this victim is the 28th pedestrian killed in san jose this year. this time last year, there were 19 fatalities. investigators say she was crossing the street but was not in the crosswalk. this is one of multiple crashes thursday in san jose involving pedestrians. another crash happened friday. >> the police department's enforcement efforts, notifications to schools, drivers seem to fall on deaf

years. it is discouraging to see there are so many traffic collisions occurring even though our traffic enforcement unit is out there making hundreds of tickets a day. >> there have been 55 traffic-related deaths in san jose this year. in the east bay, investigators believe a faulty power strip is the likely cause of an early morning fire in oakland. fire fighters helped to rescue 80 residents from the building on santa clara avenue near lake merritt. investigators say the fire started on the fifth floor where a power strip ignited a blanket. one firefighter suffered minor injuries. two residents went to the hospital. flu season is approaching. on friday, the centers for disease control put out its first weekly flu stats. early increases of flu cases were seen in most of the u.s., mostly in the southeast and

south-central regions. states are being affected. the cdc recommends everyone over six months to get the flu vaccine by the end of october. flu reports will come out each friday. the san jose city hall tower and rotunda were glowing friday night to reflect the colors of the filipino flag. this october marks a special anniversary of filipino american history month. amanda del castillo leo explains. >> on display in downtown san jose, filipino american history. a celebration marking 30 years of filipino american history month. the month-long observance commemorates the first recorded presence of filipinos in the continental united states, ancestors who arrived on october 18, 1587. >> i am reminded that those

>> welcome back. the stanford women's soccer team took to the field friday not only looking to win but to send a bigger message. earlier this year, one of their teammates died by suicide. they try to focus the crowd's attention on mental health. tara campbell has the story. reporter: with the sound of a whistle, the game begins. stanford women's soccer team taking on ucla, the players still mourning the loss of katie meyer, the 22-year-old star goaltender who died by suicide in february. andrea is a sophomore. >> we miss her every day. reporter: donning katie's number 19 in her memory on this mental health awareness night signified by the butterfly stickers. >> we want to raise awareness for mental health and make sure that everyone knows they are supported mentally and

physically. reporter: fans streaming into a sold-out stadium. young soccer players taking to this table, writing notes of encouragement. why do you think it is important we talk about mental health? >> it is good that they understand others may be going through the same thing. reporter: shelby place for a soccer team in mill valley and says katie's death is still being felt. >> highfield sad that anybody could feel that way. even when they got to be on stanford soccer team, team captain, all that. reporter: from stanford's former captain to a young captain in mill valley, zoe clark. >> we love zoe. reporter: the camaraderie is clear. what does it mean for you to have a close group of teammates like this? >> it is fun because i like soccer, and everyone here does. it is fun. reporter: stanford's men's soccer team is making their support known. >> these girls are like our

we want increased resources for our confidential support team, which is an organization on campus that helps give trauma informed counseling to survivors. >> stanford sent out a statement to students encouraging them to use the existing on-campus resources. they stated we strongly encourage students, faculty, and staff to use the resources the university offers. the university says it has increased campus security. kaiser permanente mental health workers are now two months in on the picket line. it is now the longest mental health strike in u.s. history. they walked out in august demand staff increase. kaiser permanente says more than 70% of employees have returned to work. sacramento mayor darrell steinberg will step in as a mediator for kaiser permanente and the union. as if the shortage of baby

helping at risk youth for 75 years. each year at nonprofit sends 2500 kids to summer camp and provides scholarships for 250 kids at bay area schools. lisa argen is tracking the forecast. i hope the forecast will allow them to continue that event. lisa: if you like it cool, unfortunately the mist and drizzle lingering at the coast today and tomorrow as well for half moon bay. temperatures below average, upper 50's, certainly cool at the shoreline. we spread some sunshine from our inland valleys back to the bay later this morning. that marine layer is deep and extensive, down to southern california and some showers offshore. as we go in closer, we are noticing the low cloud deck is a little taller. we are looking at the clouds all the way into our inland valleys.

71 on top mount diablo. relative humidity 17%. you go down a couple thousand feet and we are in the 50's elsewhere. 57 san carlos as well as san francisco. certainly a cool start out there, but slightly warmer than we were 24 hours ago. there is a look outside where we have got a great start for you. looking at that drizzle at the coast. sunny and breezy for most of us. that cloud cover is not going to clear from the coast. some areas around the marin county coast staying great and cooler than average today, tomorrow, monday. things will change as we get into the middle of the week. here is a look at the low clouds and fog. you can see into our inland valleys, it pulls back. 1:30, as good as it is going to get for that clearing time. we will call it partly cloudy in

parts of our east bay. by early sunday, into the sacramento valley, the clouds retreat. the on sunday, low cloud deck is going to get turned out. we are looking at that cooler air mass for sunny days and warmer days monday. still looks pleasant, 60's and 70's to near 80 inland. as we get into tuesday, mid-80's returning inland even though 70's around the bayshore. feeling better, warming up if you like that forecast. by the time we get to wednesday, this should be the peak of the warmth, something we expect this time of year. it does not look too extreme. as we get towards the end of the week, things will trail off into some cooler numbers. upper 50's to low 60's with gray sky at the arts and pumpkin festival at half moon bay.

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> good morning to you. we are starting with a look at the weather with lisa argen. we were just talking about some of our favorite decades. we agree on some things. >> hopefully you can agree on enjoying the day today. you would expect with some cooler weather, we have had cooler nights in october, but this morning warmer than we have been. 61 fremont with 54 in san jose. that brings us anywhere from two to eight degrees milder. check out the clouds at 9:00. we will call partly cloudy through the midmorning. the clouds want to cling to the coast through the afternoon. it will be sunny away from the shoreline. temperatures cooler today. we are going to take the 80's out of our inland valley forecast.

low to mid 70's in our warmest inland valleys with clouds, mist, and drizzle. we have a warm-up underway next week. we will talk about it in a few minutes. >> bring you more details now from thursday's mass shooting in north carolina. officials report seven people were shot and five killed. the suspected shooter caught hours later, a 15-year-old boy. ty hernandez reports. >> as authorities investigate a deadly shooting on the streets of raleigh, north carolina, we are learning more about the victims. 52-year-old nicole connors was killed along with her dog sammy. >> she did not deserve a thing like this. >> also killed susan tornadic, and mother of three, 34-year-old mary marshall, a navy veteran set to be married later this month. 29-year-old off-duty police officer gabriel torres, a marine

on his way to work. the youngest 16-year-old james thompson, on his way to school. >> we do not have answers as to why this occurred. >> law enforcement telling abc news the suspect is related to one of those killed but not identifying the victim. the 911 calls as the suspect began shooting on the street. >> shot somebody. >> he made his way to a popular nature trail. authorities say after a standoff, they took him into custody with serious injuries. police say they plan to release an initial report in five days. the mode of unclear at this time. ty hernandez, abc news. >> some sad news for harry potter fans. the actor known for his role as hagrid passed away friday. he brought hagrid to life and all the harry potter films. the scottish born actor also appeared in two james bond films.

the cause of death has not been released. the suspects you can see our armed. the group of men they targeted fought back. this story will only see on seven. >> that is crazy. >> what they are watching is surveillance video used in the police investigation showing six men walking along 23rd street in san francisco's mission district. a white van pulls up and three armed men get out. one is rendition and ar-15 style rifle. while some of the victims huddle against the wall, one man in yellow tries to fight back. >> i can only imagine the adrenaline. >> one suspect threatens to shoot, and one one victim does not back away, the bullet hole can still be seen. >> it is horrifying. >> those who live in the neighborhood say they had no

idea the incident happened and believes san francisco has changed. >> my kids had to leave the city. they don't want to raise kids in a place that is so scary. >> sfpd later spotted the getaway car and three suspects in a business along folsom. officers arrested myra richmond and keyari carter and a 15-year-old juvenile. police say they do not encourage victims of crime to fight back. >> stupidity, courage, not sure where the line is. >> and urged citizens to be aware of their surroundings at all hours. all suspects under custody and on charges of attempted murder. the juvenile has a no bail warrant out of alameda county. >> a test website has just gone live for people to apply for student loan forgiveness.

the department of education is allowing people to submit applications for the debt relief program. those who submit applications will not have to reapply. this beta site will be put on pause as the team evaluates for the official site later this month. two of the largest grocery chains are set to become one. kroger announced it will buy albertsons in a $24.6 billion deal. that makes it one of the largest mergers ever in american retail history. the companies have about 5000 stores total. albertsons owns safeway, lucky's , and many more, and kroger's includes food 4 less, ralphs, and others. federal regulators still have to approve this deal. sony has just announced it is releasing a pair of over-the-counter hearing aids that start at $1000. they pair with an app so you can

>> a breakthrough by researchers at stanford could research the human brain, but not while it is in the human body. we have a look at the groundbreaking technique. >> for decades, researchers have been peering into the human brain, trying to unlock symptoms of autism, epilepsy, and mental illness. a team at stanford says they have built their own brain, or part of one. the trick is that the brain tissue does not live in a humans head. it lives in a rat's. >> we have done this by transplanting them early in the developing rat, at a time when the probably -- when the rat brain is still plastic. >> he is a professor at the

stanford school of medicine. the first step was to create the brain tissue using stem cells derived from skin samples that can be coaxed into developing into any kind of self in the body, including beating heart cells. the team transplanted the cells onto the brain of a living rat. they watched as blood vessels connected and the human neurons began to grow. >> it starts to connect with some of the circuitry of the rat. it receives input from the thalamus, and important structure in the middle of the brain that relays information from senses. >> this animation illustrates what happens next. researchers were able to confirm that sensations from the rat's whiskers were being processed by the human brain cells. later, the engineered cells that were sensitive to a colored

light then taught the rat to associate the light with a reward. behavior being processed through the human brain tissue. the stanford team is careful to say they are not working to create a humanized rat. rather a platform where they can research diseases, drugs, and therapies that could never be done on a living human. the stanford team believes that could provide critical insight into forms of autism and epilepsy and perhaps psychiatric disorders as well. >> we have made little progress in understanding the biology of these conditions because the human brain is and accessible. >> they are hoping faster testing will lead to new drugs and a powerful new way of studying the human brain. jobina fortson, abc 7. >> the stanford team says they have been able to mirror tissue from different areas of the brain, allowing for varied research studies.

bay by a number of well cdcs has increased -- species has increased. the impact of climate change is having an impact. the humpbacks are often following anchovy closer to shore. gray whales which typically migrate from mexico to alaska might be facing similar pressures. >> some of them were so hungry they were coming into the bay and looking for food. there is not much in the bay for them. normally they would be in alaska. >> a recent study found the overall gray whale population along the coast dropping significantly. in the last decade, researchers have been documenting threats to whales from food migration to human behavior. in response, the national oceanic and atmospheric administration has made it a priority to keep whales safer. daniel lipsky is a research

coordinator with noaaa. they have been monitoring will populations with a buoy system that allows them to eavesdrop. >> we can listen to them. what this has eliminated for us is that there are whales in the region for longer than we thought. humpback whales are here year-round. the season for blue whales is longer than we thought. >> that data combined with ocean surveys informs the ship strike program that asks shipping companies to slow down. >> this year based on that information we extended our voluntary speed reduction request to be longer in the year. we extended it to december this year. next year, we are going to be looking to extending that even further.

>> that surveillance is getting an added layer as well. several weeks ago, we showed you a new monitoring system called whale safe deployed by the marine mammal center. it is able to transmit real-time updates, including the speeds of nearby ships. in the headlands, bill is concerned about the safety of the whales and better understanding of potential changes to their ecosystem, learning when the shifting patterns are temporary or a long-term effect. >> i think everything is changing in the ocean. before 2016, we did not see humpbacks coming into feet. i think things could go up and down over the years. we might get more in some years. >> unpredictable changes that could force humans to adapt our behavior along with the whales.
