the suspect brandished his weapon in a bustling tourist district. cornell barnard joins us live from the scene and you have details of this very frightening evening. >> yes. a very scary night and a rare night of violence here in the town of sonoma. deputies were not injured but an evening of chaos and lots of broken glass. >> as we were approaching the windows, we heard a bunch of gunfire. it was insane, it did not even seem real. >> he and his staff witnessed a shootout between sonoma county sheriff to please and an armed man. >> we told everyone to stay inside, we locked our front door.

we make sure that everyone in the front bar knew that that they had to exit. >> this is the independent agency now investigating. they said the suspect had been terrorizing some tourists on sonoma plaza. >> the suspect was trying to break -- break a firearm. >> seconds later, the man in his 40's was confronted by deputies. >> the deputy immediately noticed the suspect might have a gun. he refused to comply with that and actually shot at this point time at the deputy. the deputy responded with firing back at the suspect. >> the suspect was struck once but ran away. after a short chase, the man ran toward deputies when a second officer fired, wounding the suspect again. >> saw a lot of blood, it was like out of a movie. >> the man was taken to the hospital. because i need to call my

insurance. >> police say the suspect broke windows at nearby businesses including the happy garden restaurant, leaving a sea of broken glass. >> angry and also, why would they do that to me? >> usually sonoma is a peaceful tourist destination. the mayor says his community is safe. he is praying for the suspect family. >> i am very grateful to law enforcement for the response and investigation for this is a tragic case. >> the mayor now offering his help to those businesses offered -- his name is not been released but they say he has a criminal record. authorities did not offer any details and they say a motive here is still unclear. scary night for sure.

cornell barnard, abc 7 news. quick moving on, stockton residents are resting easier this week and following the arrest of a man killed -- suspected of killing six men but there was loan -- one lone survivor. the brush with death still haunts this woman. she said she was standing next to train tracks in stockton when she suddenly saw a gun pointed at her. >> i was on the side and a man came around the owner. they already had the gun out. they just started shooting. there were no words exchanged, they did not say anything, they did not come any closer, they just started shooting this. i ran toward them knowing i would have to closer to the street. >> unbelievable. she is so calm. both natasha said that she was lucky and received help shortly after her escape. we will hear more about her

survival and get the latest in the case. >> tap into bar, commemoration of this earthquake. in march 30 three years since the 6.9 magnitude earthquake rocked the bay area and other parts of northern california. to commemorate the equation, the san francisco fire department is hosting a ceremony tomorrow afternoon at fire station 35. that ceremony will mark the first ever recognition of the monument. the quick lasted 20 seconds and caused severe damage in many parts of the country. also happening tomorrow, $2.7 million in funding will be announced for three local projects. funding appropriated by congress will go toward improving the environment. san jose state is among the three organizations accepting a check.

elizabeth holmes be back in court tomorrow. she was granted a limited motion hearing on efforts to get a new trial. that hearing will determine if the government engaged in misconduct with the examination during her trial. i judge convicted back in january on accounts of defrauding investors. the sentencing date is set for november 18. new details now. investigators are calling the shooting at pittsburgh friday night domestic violence. officers found the mother and her eight-year-old son in a truck that crashed. the driver fired multiple rounds into the vehicle and fled the scene. the child had a single non-letter and they wound to the left shoulder. his mother had multiple gunshot wounds. both are in the hospital in stable condition. police said the suspect and

victim knew each other and the suspect says -- specifically targeted the mother. an undercover operation resulting in the arrest and citations for those purchasing alcohol for minors. the california alcoholic beverage -- alcoholic beverage control agents and menlo police arrested five in total. the mission was intended to reduce dependence on alcohol. studies show that underage drinking produces higher rates of drunk driving crashes and higher chance of criminal activities. penalties included a $1000 fine and 24 hours of community service. today, san francisco residents gathered for live bands, fun and games. take a look. the open streets program brought communities together from all across the city. people are able to interact with local vendors and enjoy free live entertainment. >> we really do not have a lot of public spaces. this is an opportunity for the

looking over san francisco. happy to say this because earlier it was so cloudy and dreary looking. 64° in the city. 66 in oakland. san jose and santa clara in the upper 60's. 64 and half moon bay. we are looking from emeryville, westwood. 65° in santa rosa right now. even at the golden gate, we are seeing lots of blue sky right now. most of the day, always always great. fog will be developed overnight. gray skies will linger tomorrow morning. it will be cooler than average once more but a brief warming time here. for the overnight hours, we will still see some clear skies or breaks in the clouds going into the overnight hours.
