of another victim. >> our surveillance team found this person while he was driving . we watched his patterns and determine early this morning he was on a mission to kill. we are sure wetoed killin >>ettislee is connected to five deadly shootings in stockton, one in oakland. all those victims are men, ages 21 to 54 years old. tonight, we are hearing from the only known survivor of the suspected killer's attacks. tara campbell joins us live in the newsroom with her story. tara: this woman was on housed at the time -- on housed -- unhoused at the time. she has been touted as a leader in this case helping investigators from the suspect. >> i just saw flashes.

tara: natosha is describing the terrifying moments she believes she was shot at by the suspected and now captured serial killer, wesley brownlee, talking in a recent interview with the stockton-based 209 times, describing standing that to -- next to train tracks when suddenly she saw a gun pointed at her. >> i was on the side, and a man come around the corner or whoever came around the corner, and they already had the gun out. they just started shooting. i ran towards them, knowing that i had to get closer to the street to survive. tara: she says she was shot about 10 times in the upper body. >> the burning, it is incredible. you are wet and don't really know why you are what. every time i move my legs, i was getting wetter and wetter. i knew i was dying. >> explaining, she crawled away from the scene not knowing where the suspect went, and started calling out for help.

>> i heard a car come by me, and i heard, like, a door open or close, and i could tell it went down a distance, and i heard some men say, i'm right here. i'm calling 911 for you. don't worry. >> that was the spring of 2021. she says when she saw the image of brownlee circulating, she knew right away. what's when i saw the image of the person from the back, even though i never seen their face, that that was the person that tried to kill me. >> her description of the suspect turned out to be key to catching him. >> she did let us know it was a male suspect. she was able to provide us a height and weight, and that is what we connected with the video that we are pushing out. >> police say ballistics helped connect all the shootings. as for little or -- as for lato ur, she says since the shooting,

she has gotten sober and is no longer living on the streets. >> i genuinely 100% forgive the person who shot me. >> brownlee was being held on san joaquin county jail saturday without rail and is expected to be arraigned in court tuesday afternoon. dion: that's a story we will continue to follow. tomorrow, another court hearing for the disgraced founder of theranos. she is pushing for a new trial. tomorrow's proceedings will take a look at one of the witnesses. if no trial is granted, homes is set to be sentenced on member 18. a jury convicted her in january on four counts of defrauding investors out of millions of dollars. iranian americans who oppose the government in tehran held a

candlelight vigil in san francisco's union square tonight . they came to pay tribute to the inmates who died in iran's evan prison this weekend. officials confirmed four people died from smoke inhalation and more than 60 were injured during the fire at the prison. even so, many believe the death toll is much higher. hundreds of antigovernment protesters arrested over the past month are being held at the compound in tehran. >> we think the only solution is a complete overthrow of the government and establishment of a new democratic government. it takes time for these revolutions to play out. >> clashes with state security forces have spread throughout the country since the death of 22-year-old mahsa amini, who was jailed for allegedly violating iran's strict dress code. it was reported that the former marsh fire contained back in july started burning again.

according to "the san francisco chronicle," fire officials say it began smoldering last month. a former fire burned over 500 acres and cause poor air quality and forced evacuations. contra costa is monitoring the current air quality where conditions right now are still good. now to your voice and your vote. tuesday, we will be exactly three weeks away from election day, so we are preparing you for the important issues you will see on the ballot. abc 7 news has a look at where the candidates stand. >> come november, history will be made within the alameda county district attorney's office. >> one of these candidates will be the first african-american, but it also will show people of alameda county that african-americans can do this job and, hopefully, do it very effectively. >> terrance evans is a partner

strengthening partnership with victim advocates. he says the years recall shows the challenges of the job. he believes experience can be an advantage. >> i have a relationship with those folks to understand how those systems within the d.a.'s office work in order to make those types of changes. >> studies show that black men regularly see longer jail sentences, so it is a racial justice issue. >> a community-based group helps those formerly incarcerated, and he wants a break from what he calls a corrupt system. his remedy for change -- to bring in someone from outside the established system, a system wiley has been part of. >> we have someone who is a civil rights attorney. >> they will have their answers november 8.

dion: new at 11:00, some real-life superheroes sprung into action to save a woman from an attack in a story you will see only on 7. as if the site of a 1990's superhero taking orders or slinging drinks was not enough, what happened friday night could be described as morphin' time. >> when something rakes out, you're not sure it is real. >> the woman ran in seeking help. a man was choking her. that's when not just the pink power ranger but all of them jumped into action to de-escalate the situation. >> all of the servers/power rangers were moving towards the scene to help one another out.

dion: she says the man even started using racial slurs, but then the spirit of community kicked in and customers started morphing, too. >> the patrons started getting involved in a way that was supportive and making sure everyone was safe. dion: eventually, the rangers piled onto the man and police showed up. they detained the man believing he was undergoing a mental health crisis. >> thai people are very playful. we like to laugh. if it's to create harmony or balance, that is just sort of our either, so that is exactly i think how we approach something that could be scary or shocking or surprising. we turn to laughter and trying to piece keep.

concord, 58. one more live view from our rooftop camera looking across the embarcadero. these are our forecast headlines. we will see clouds and fog developing later during the overnight hours. some spotty drizzle, look for gray skies to start the morning. it will be cooler than average, but later in the week, a brief period of warming will develop tuesday through thursday. looking at our forecast animation, you can see that during the early morning hours, we will see an increase in clouds. high clouds, low clouds, maybe even some drizzle. do not expect to have much in the way of reduced visibility. just a few pockets of clouds here and there and we will get a mix of clouds and sun during the daytime hours tomorrow. overnight lows mainly in the mid-50's. a little cooler in the north bay where low temperatures will be in the upper 40's and highs,

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> i've never seen anybody wielding a gun in the streets of sonoma, for sure. dion: a north bay man is in critical condition after being shot multiple times by deputies. police say the armed suspect brandished his weapons in the middle of sonoma's busy boston district. >> as we were approaching the windows, we heard a pop, pop, pop, pop, bunch of gunfire, which is insane. it did not even seem real. >> martin was working a private party saturday night when he and his staff witnessed a shootout between sonoma county sheriff's deputies and an armed man. >> we told went up and make sure in the bar new to head out the front door, not the back. quickly santa rosa police

department is the agency investigating. they say the suspect had been terrorizing tourists. >> the suspect was trying to break a window of a passing limousine as well as brandishing a firearm. >> seconds later, the man in his 40's, was confronted by deputies. >> the deputy immediately noticed the suspect might have a gun, ordered him to drop it several times. he refused to comply and shot at least one time at the deputy, we believe, and the deputy responded firing back at the suspect. >> police say the suspect was struck once but ran away. after a short chase, authorities say the man ran towards deputies when a second officer fired, wounding the suspect a second time. >> saw him roll over in the street. >> the man was taken to the hospital. >> i need to call my insurance. >> before the shooting, police say the suspect broke windows at nearby businesses, including lisa chan's happy garden

arrested and issued several citations. studies show that underage drinking produces higher rates of drunk driving crashes and a higher chance of criminal activities. penalties included a thousand dollar fine and 24 hours of community service. some incredible video now. a grass fire destroys over 70 cars in tempe, texas today. you can see cars were parked in a grass field at the robinson family farms festival when the area caught on fire. bell county fire marshals believe a discarded cigarette hit dry grass which then sparked the flames. the good news -- there were no injuries. bell county is currently under a burn ban due to extreme drought conditions. developing news now -- former president trump faces backlash after condemning the jewish community's appreciation for his policies toward israel. trump took to his media platform, criticizing jewish

dion: safeguarding the wildlife and resources along our natural coast and san francisco bay is part of building a better bay area. when it comes to protecting the whales that migrate through our waters, the solutions become even more sophisticated. >> as a researcher, bill keener has been watching san francisco bay for decades, but he says lately, there's been a lot more to keep an ion. >> the home back are in this straight area and the golden gate bridge, but gray whales tend to go farther in, even past alcatraz islands. >> he says the number of visits

into the bay have's -- have increased significantly. it is difficult to isolate and cause, but researchers suspect pressure on their food sources from climate change is having an impact. he says they are often following and shall be closer to shore, a phenomenon sometimes known as habitat compression. while gray whales, which typically migrate between mexico and alaska, typically face different treasures. >> some of them were actually so hungry they were coming to the bay and looking for food. there's not much in the bay for them, nor with a need way up in alaska. >> a recent study found the overall population dropping significantly, and in the last decade, researchers have been documenting a variety of threats to whales, trying to do everything from food migration to food behavior. organizations like noaa have made it a priority to keep

oceans safer. the research coordinator says the group has been monitoring whale populations with the help of a buoy-based system that literally allows them to eavesdrop. >> when there are vocalizing whales in the area, we can hear them. what this has eliminated for us is that there are whales in the region for a lot longer than we thought. humpback whales are pretty much here year-round, and the season is also longer than we thought. >> she says the data is combined with ocean surveys to inform the agency's ship strength program, which asks shipping agencies to slow in areas where multiple species of whales are roaming. >> this year, we extended our voluntary production request to be longer in the years, so we extended it to december this

year, and next year, we will be looking to extending that even further. >> that surveillance is getting an added layer as well. several weeks ago, we showed you a new monitoring system deployed in collaboration by the marine mammal center and benioff ocean science laboratory. it is able to submit real-time updates, including the speeds of nearby ships. >> the narrowest spot is the most dangerous. >> bill is concerned both about the safety of the whales and understanding the changes to their complex ecosystem, learning if the shifting patterns of feeding and migration are temporary or big longer-term effect of climate change or other factors. >> i think everything is changing out in the ocean, so before 2016, we did not see humpbacks coming in to feed, so i think things could go up and down over the years, that we might get more in some years and less in others. >> unproductive changes that

could ultimately force humans to adapt our behavior along with the whales. >> again, the forces at work are complicated, but researchers say they want to learn if climate shifts as far north as alaska could be influencing food sources of whales. this also is nothing you have been looking at closely. spencer: migration of whales, those patterns are shifting because of the warming of the ocean waters. we don't know where it is leading. we just follow it. have to see how things change. the weather -- dion: you took my line! spencer: obviously, weather is profoundly influenced by climate change. we have clouds returning to the coastline, over two fog, maybe some coastal drizzle in early morning hours and tomorrow, mix of sun and clouds, much like we have had the last couple of nights. overnight lows mainly in the mid

jalen hurts finds a wide open devonta smith for the touchdown. eagles are 6-0 for the first time since the 2004 season when they reached the super bowl, and, yeah, that guy is still going. we are less than 48 hours away from the warriors welcoming the lakers for tuesday's season opener. getting set to lift the seventh banner in franchise history. yesterday, he signed a four-year extension reportedly worth 109 million dollars. technically, he has taken a pay cut to stay with golden state. going to make $33.6 million this season, but that drops down to an average of about $27 million per year. he and fellow contract extension signing teammate jordan poole excited for the future. >> it is a blessing to reach an extension and be here another four years.
