to be there, but rachel scott will have more ahead on what's happening in georgia. first, the latest on ukraine and the new kamikaze drone strikes overnight on the capital. britt clennett is on the scene in kyiv. good morning, britt. >> reporter: good morning, george. yes, still a real sense of urgency here as emergency workers desperately comb through rubble looking for survivors after a kamikaze drone attack on a residential building where you can still see the smoke rising behind me and still an acrid smell in the air. half of that apartment block blown away. rooms sliced into halves. firemen able to pull out several but three were killed including we're told a pregnant woman. now, this is one of several strikes by an iranian-made self-destroying drones. the explosions starting from about 7:00 a.m. local when most of the monday morning trains were arriving with commuters. now, this is exactly a week

after those peak hour attacks last monday. kyiv mayor vitali klitschko telling me a little bit earlier the city is angry, but not scared. despite the terror once again unleashed by putin in the heart pof the capital. robin? >> angry but not scared. britt, thank you. the u.s. and nato are beginning nuclear drills today and take place amid russia conducting its own nuclear exercises. our chief foreign correspondent ian pannell is also on the scene in ukraine for us. good morning, ian. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this is the latest salvo from russia in the escalating aerial war against ukraine. over the last few days we've seen increasing use of drones and missiles against various targets around the country. this as tensions between russia and america continue. this morning, as the ukrainian capital is attacked again nato kicks nuclear training exercises in europe. nuclear training and drills taking place in three spots

involving 14 countries with up to 60 aircraft including u.s. b-52 long-range bombers. russia is holding its own nuclear drills this month. likely to also include live missiles like previous years. vladimir putin stoking nuclear fears recently over u.s. and nato support for ukraine. [ speaking non-english ] calling the direct conflict a very dangerous move which could lead to a global catastrophe. now the kremlin sending almost 9,000 soldiers to belarus to allegedly protect its strategic border it shares with ukraine. soldiers and equipment seen arriving by train to join a russian/belarusian joint force stoking fears of a new front in the war. but despite the outward shows of strength, russia facing mounting internal issues with their military recruitments and morale. "the washington post" reporting men of fighting age are being taken from the streets and their places of work coerced to join the fight and russia even forced to recruit from its own prisons. president zelenskyy saying -- [ speaking in non-english ]

this is how the russian state is sponsoring terror. it's looking for killers in prisons and promises them freedom if they kill again. this as russia admits two volunteer soldiers from an ex-soviet nation attacked one of their own military bases over the weekend when new recruits were training leaving 11 russian soldiers dead, 15 wounded. well, vladimir putin clearly having problems domestically but here on the ground in ukraine. up until a few weeks ago this town was occupied by russia but the ukrainians are advancing, the russians are retreating and that's why we're seeing putin resorting increasingly to the use of drones and missile strikes against innocent civilian targets. t.j.? >> ian, thank you as always. we turn to the deep freeze settling into several northern states and some are bracing for a foot of snow or more. our alex perez is in chicago. i caught a shot of you before we put you on tv. you were bouncing around trying to stay warm so i guess that's an indication of how it feels in chicago this morning. >> reporter: yeah, it's that time of the year, once again,

t.j., here in chicago and in much of the midwest we are waking up to the coldest temperatures of the season so far. now, many across the region are coping with flat out and in some cases record-breaking cold temperatures to start the workweek. snow and lots of it. check out these images. that will be the big problem in the upper peninsula of michigan where they are bracing for possibly more than a foot of snow between today and tomorrow and the cold blast expected to spread south. freeze watches and warnings across some 12 states, cities like denver, to nashville to pittsburgh all on alert. some good news, looking ahead here in chicago and other cities, this coming weekend we could see temperatures much warmer than usual. t.j.? >> all right, alex, thank you. help us make sense of that, ginger. talking about how cold it's going to get, but the weekend is going to be beautiful. >> yes. it's that time of year where the

early voting getting under way. this morning, with early voting kicking off in georgia, republican senate candidate herschel walker was a no-show in the second scheduled debate. >> i think that half of being a senate -- a senator is showing up. >> reporter: on stage an empty podium. democratic incumbent senator raphael warnock taking every opportunity to call out his absence. >> if mr. walker were here, i'd ask him about this disturbing history of violence that we've seen from him and we're not just talking about one woman, but multiple women. >> reporter: walker has denied some of those allegations. the former football star only agreed to debate once this weekend showing up to an earlier event where he repeatedly tried to link warnock to president biden and soaring inflation, a top issue for georgia voters. >> this race ain't about me. it's about what raphael warnock and joe biden have done to you and your family. tonight he's going to try to sweet talk you that he's doing a good job. >> reporter: that debate turning personal.

challenger stacey abrams -- >> i am running for governor because i am fighting for you. >> reporter: -- will take the stage ahead of a heated rematch this november. in 2018 stacey abrams lost to republican governor brian kemp by fewer than 55,000 votes and as for that moment on the debate stage this morning, herschel walker's campaign tells us that what he showed was an honorary badge. once again, walker is not a trained police officer. george? >> so much at stake in that election. okay, thanks very much. robin? george, now to the deadly fire at a notoriously brutal prison in iran as anti-regime protests have been sweeping the country. now in their fifth week. among the prisoners two americans and the state department has expressed urgent concern about their welfare. our chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz has that story for us. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this morning families in iran and here at home are desperate for information about loved ones inside the evin prison. many of them political prisoners and protesters who have been standing up to iran's oppressive

government. the fire was massive. this video posted by local activists recording the explosions and volleys of gunfire reverberating from the hillside prison above iran's capital. iran's government allowing state tv to see the charred aftermath saying eight prisoners who they described as robbery suspects were killed and more than 60 suffering smoke inhalation. the iranians blaming a fight between prisoners for the blaze, but with restrictions on the reporting, it is nearly impossible to know the extent of injuries or the cause. among the thousands of prisoners inside, iranian american businessman siamak namazi and emad sharghhi. both accused of spying. this morning their families saying the two men have been reportedly moved to a secure area in the prison and are safe. the state department making clear iran is responsible for their safety and are following

reports from the prison with urgency. outside the prison angry protesters lighting fires of their own as the rage in iran's streets mounts. the protests following the death of mahsa amini, who died in police custody after being arrested for violation of iran's strict dress code for women. more than 240 protesters have reportedly been killed in the police crackdown. [ speaking non-english ] iran's ultra conservative president blaming the u.s. saying, it is our belief that america is behind the majority of destruction, terror, riots and chaos in the region and the world. but the u.s. has made very clear america stands with the protesters. those protests are only escalating in iranian towns and cities and beyond. for the first time ever an iranian female athlete representing her country in a climbing competition in seoul appeared without a hijab,

something that iran requires of its athletes even outside of iran. robin? >> all right. and martha, we know that you have been traveling to iran for many, many years and you're familiar with that prison? >> reporter: i am, robin. it's impossible not to notice the massive barbed wire fences that surround it up in the mountains. you're never supposed to photograph it or even turn a camera toward it and, of course, the stories from inside over the years are truly frightening which makes these protests even more courageous, robin. >> really does. always appreciate your reporting, martha, thank you. t.j.? we turn to new details on that mass shooting that left five people dead in north carolina. our elwyn lopez is in raleigh with more, including the latest on the 15-year-old suspect. and, elwyn, righ now, people are still trying to figure out a motive here. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, t.j. the first deadly gunshots rang out in this neighborhood spreading terror and chaos. now it's a place where neighbors are coming together. they are praying, dropping off

flowers all in tribute to the five lives cut tragically short. an east raleigh community in shock and disbelief as investigators now look for a motive behind thursday's mass shooting. five lives were violently taken away. the 15-year-old suspect began shooting in a residential neighborhood and continued on a popular walking trail before taken into custody. >> oh, my god. oh, she's bleeding.orter: the d scene spanning for more than two miles. >> disbelief. just feel like i'm walking through a daze right now. >> reporter: tracey howard lost his wife of five years, 52-year-old nicole connors. >> she was a fun-loving person, lovely and everybody in the neighborhood knew her. >> reporter: connors was the oldest of those killed. the youngest, james thompson, 16 years old, a high school junior. 49-year-old susan karnatz, a mother of three also killed. 34-year-old mary marshall, a navy veteran, now dead just days

before getting married. and 29-year-old off-duty police officer gabriel torres, gunned down on his way to work. his fellow officers now paying tribute. a law enforcement official telling abc news that among the dead is one of the shooter's relatives. this morning, the teenage suspect continues to be in grave condition with life-threatening injuries. the question remains as to whether those were self-inflicted or not. and, guys, a law enforcement official tells us that the suspect's juvenile records have not turned up any criminal history so far. we expect police to release more details this thursday. guys? >> elwyn, thank you so much. we're going to turn to major league baseball. the playoffs overnight, the yankees beat the guardians setting up a huge game tonight with a trip to the american league championship series on the line. will reeve is here. there's something special about october baseball. good morning, will.

serial killer's reign of terror is over. >> our attorneys working around the clock to evaluate and assess all the evidence submitted so far. >> reporter: police arresting 43-year-old wesley brownlee early saturday linking him to the murders of five men in stockton and one in oakland including paul yaw gunned down in july. >> i was kind of sick to my stomach just because i realized that i was going to have to see what this person actually looked like which utterly disgusts me. but at the same time i was happy because this isn't going to happen to another family or another victim. >> reporter: paul yaw's mother desperate to know why. >> they're probably going to ask why did you do this and how dare you take this person from us. i mean, he was such a good-hearted kid.

i just wish that justice obviously is served, that he gets what he has coming to him. i mean, i don't know, whatever that may be. i don't think -- and it will ever be enough if that's -- i mean that's just how i feel. >> reporter: a seventh shooting victim, a woman named natasha latour, survived being shot in april of 2021. >> i ran towards him knowing i would have to get closer to the street if i wanted to survive. >> reporter: natasha said a good samaritan called 911, but says police didn't take her case seriously. >> they basically treated me as if it was a drug deal gone bad. throughout this process, throughout this whole -- ever since april, ever since i got out of the hospital, it was a constant, me trying to reach them. basically five people died because they didn't listen to me. >> reporter: we reached out to the stockton police department for a comment, but we have not heard back. according to authorities, police tracked brownlee down as he was allegedly prowling the streets of stockton for his next victim armed with a gun. >> we watched his patterns and determined early this morning he

buyers, beware. some major retailers are adjusting their shipping return policies, making free returns a thing of the past. >> i just was kind of surprised. >> reporter: online shopping soared during the pandemic but so did returns. the national retail federation reporting $218 billion worth of online purchases were returned in 2021. more than double the year before. >> all signs point to the era of free returns probably coming to an end in the near future. they're costing retailers millions of dollars every year and that's because shipping has gotten more expensive and labor has gotten more expensive as well. >> reporter: business insider reporting many shoppers do what's called bracketing, buying the same clothes in different sizes and colors, then returning what they no longer want and doesn't fit. h&m announcing on a recent earnings call they will test a fee to ship back returns in certain markets.

>> when i saw that there was going to be a deduction from my refunds, it kind of made me reconsider if i i would really be shopping online as often. >> reporter: among others currently charging shipping fees to return by mail, zara charging $3.95 for any returns to a dropoff point. abercrombie & fitch, a $7 shipping fee and j. crew coming in at $7.50 and jcpenney charging a flat shipping rate of $8. >> i think eventually they'll just end up paying for it because consumers want to shop and they want to make sure that they are returning the items that they don't want anymore. >> reporter: experts say there are still ways to avoid those costs. most retailers let shoppers return online purchases for free at brick and mortar stores. also see if the store will do free shipping for exchanges rather than returning. and make those returns within the 30-day window you commonly see from retailers. another option we see popping up are these so-called return bars. they happen to be in high

these are faces, beautiful faces of those who have received a bone marrow transplant, much like i did and i was so blessed that sallie-anne, my sister was a match and was really astounded that only happens 30% of the time that a family member is a match so then you have to go to the registry or other options like this cord blood transplant. what, dr. roboz, does this mean for your patients? >> an incredible advance because, look, we can't find donors for or couldn't find donors for a lot of people so cord blood allowed us not only to expand the donor pool but it's more than that. there might be some aml or acute myeloid leukemia patients where cord blood is better. it's to actually make transplant better, safer and more accessible which is tremendous. >> i'm amazed sometimes. i'll meet somebody on the street

and said they had a transplant like two weeks ago or something like that. you were doing these transplants, dr. giralt. i remember when you had the syringe in my room and were going, go, sallie, go, but talk about the advancements made in the transplants in the last ten years. >> over the last ten years thanks to people like you who participated in clinical trials, a lot of patients who have participated in clinical trials we've made major advances. when you had transplants you had to have a fully matched donor or fully matched cord blood. that's no longer the case. we now have technology that allows us to do mismatch related and makes participating in be the match even more important where a much more diverse population than we were ten years ago and need more and more young donors. >> you had to have that perfect match and that's not the case, the science, the technology has really advanced, hasn't it, gail? >> not only that, it's also the drugs that we use in addition to the transplants. there have been incredible,

incredible changes in how we deal with things like graph versus host disease or complications related to transplant. even beyond the initial matching process, the advances are tremendous and i'll tell you, most people don't actually know you're not definitely cured if you get a transplant. the assumption is if you get a transplant you're definitely cured except that isn't the case and now we're doing things like manipulating the transplants or using medications even after transplant to prolong remission, keep people in remission and ultimately get more people out to where you are at ten years. >> i know. i'm so incredibly thankful to you both. let's talk about those that are doing the doning -- donating. i remember sister sally-ann when she was having stem cells collected. have there been advancements in that regard as well, sergio. >> there's been significant work doing the graft, right. the collection process is more or less the same.

we either do a bone marrow or stem cell the way sally-ann did. after the cells are collected we're working to either make that graft better so that your recovery is quicker or make that graft more effective so there's a less chance of the leukemia or mds coming back. the donation is much more or less the same. we're trying to make it easier for the donor. what's interesting is whenever we've asked donors, they've always come back and said it's been one of the best things they've ever done in their life. >> my sister said she felt it was the reason why she was born. yeah, yeah. >> it is incredible. >> it's an easy process to find out if you can be a donor. >> it's an easy process. >> can you show how simply swabbing the inside is? >> this is possibly only harder on live tv and because i have to look at camera 5. >> okay. >> other than that, so here's the swab. you're not supposed to eat for an hour or drink for about an hour. no problem there and mouth

should be dry which is easy on live tv. i'm going to swab and you talk. >> okay. >> so tell them -- that's a simple process like that. >> it's simple and, rear, the one thing we ask donors when you swab you swab to commit that when you're called you'll be there. it is painless. the donor collection process is really fairly straightforward. you either give yourselves shots and then the cells are collected as if you're donating blood or in a certain case we do a bone marrow under general anesthesia but the most important thing you are saving a life. >> i know and it was very simple for my sister as well. you wanted to say something about donating the cord blood. >> yeah, i mean i think i don't want to mix people up. we're talking about adult donors and talking about cord blood and you can do both. you can be an adult donor and sign up for be the match but if you're having kids, think about donating a cord to one of the cord blood banks and that's a simple conversation actually to have, i donated both of my children's cords, by the way and it's a process that is simple for mom to do and another way to be part of the bone marrow
