solutions. this is abc 7 news. in other words exchange didn't say anything didn't come any closer just started shooting we watched this patterns. and determine he was on a mission to kill. i just wish that justice obviously served. new information today about the man police believe is the killer who terrorized oakland and stockton for more than a year. good afternoon. i'm kristen z and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us 43 year old wesley. brownlee was arrested over the weekend police say he was out hunting for more victims seven people were shot six killed the majority in stockton in just the last few months. however, the first known victim was in oakland last year abc 7 news reporter liam melendez is live in the newsroom now with more on brownlee and his connection to the bay area leanne. so here's what we know according to records obtained by our media partner the east bay times brownlee lost a brother early on to gun violins.

he was then arrested in alameda county on drug charges twice in 1999, and then in 2001, he served timed and was released in 2003 police are now trying to piece together to understand what may had may have led him to allegedly start killing people. police arrested wesley brownlee on saturday at two o'clock in the morning near a park in stockton officers made contact with him. he was wearing dark clothing and had a mask around his neck. there's also armed with the firearm when he was taken into custody. we are sure we stopped another killing the district attorney there believes the weapon in the first two shootings in april 2021 was then used again. we then have a dormant period with the weapon and then it becomes back in use this summer and is involved in the five homicides. the first person killed was 40

year old juan vasquez serrano shot in his car in east oakland in april 2021. his sister told abc 7 news. the family is relieved 14 yesterday con. mirmano, marie chui vasquez. serrano says justice has been served her brother is resting in peace and so is the family the second person shot and the only one to survive is natasha latour. and they already had the gun out. and they and they just started shooting it was her description of the shooter that helped police link the man in this surveillance video to the shootings that followed all of them in stockton, but by now five more men had already been killed even though police knew they were probably looking for an african-american serial killer the assumption is that most serial killers are white men a sort of negligence that endangered as always professor allen branson wrote the book the anonymity of african-american serial killers can't make any

assumption about any group. oh this group only does this group only does that that's the danger. so the point being that if you don't make assumptions you can cast a wide net now a lot of credit for capturing this alleged serial killer is going to the stockton community who called into the police department with thousands of tips. there was even a face group facebook group that served as a platform for information and advice. so it was really helpful for a community to come together when so many other communities don't in the newsroom leanne melendez abc 7 news dan thank you a hit and run suspect who was being chased by oakland police this morning hit and killed another driver who had nothing to do with the chase this all started friday afternoon with a hit and run on 73rd avenue at international boulevard. card police say the suspect jonathan hernandez flashed a gun at the victim of that crash and started making threats the victim de-escalated the situation and called police.

well fast forward to this morning officers say they spotted hernandez around 7 am and they say he tried to take off so they chased him the chase ended with the suspect crashing into a pickup truck and killing the driver at 69th avenue in san leandro street this perceived investigated by the department and at some point when the investigation is concluded this pursuit group go before a review board to determine whether it complied with policy or not. the suspect was arrested and the officers involved in the pursuit have not been placed on routine administrative leave. all right, let's move now to new developments in the covid pandemic today governor newsom announced that california's covid-19 state of emergency will end at the end of february why so long while the extra time gives a state flexibility to handle any possible surge. that might come after the holidays this comes as one bay area county warns that new wave of covid cases may not be far off abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has the story.

the only thing scarier than halloween, this fall is the potential of a new surge in covid-19 cases. reading for the past six weeks about an average about 25 cases a day. we're kind of stable there that's now crept up to about 30 cases a day dr. matt willis says he's concerned about the rise and local cases and hospitalizations. he believes the number will continue to rise with increased case rates in the northeast and in europe. he says everyone's best defense is the new bi-valent booster. we are going to see more cases and the best way to protect yourself is with that new and updated booster, but the number of folks who perceive that new and improved booster surprisingly low check it out only 8.6% across the bay area. season and they're saying now it's going to be even harder the elderly. the covid susie ben wells is worried about covid coming around again. she says for now eating outside

freshness for 25 years. it's a great product. there's a sense of home to it. aaron barcellos has grown tomatoes in california's central valley. this year was a below average air force but between the crushing three-year drought and the rising cost of growing tomatoes were just at the mercy of mother nature farmers, like barcelos are feeling the squeeze as their margins get sliced and diced. we had a little over 500 acres. we follow it over 2,000 acres of ground that normally go to tomatoes. we just did not have the water to go ahead and grow during the drought or water triples and quadruples and prices as well. but it's not just water due to inflation farmers are also paying more for fuel and fertilizers those added costs than reflected in consumer products. there aren't any farmers making any money on tomatoes of california this year? even with with a record price last year, which means there's less to go around which means prices will go up something that consumers will feel when i go is about the california tomato growers association said its members produced about 14% less this year than originally intended.

clouds at least through thursday because of that offshore breeze. that's why we're going to warm up quickly like we did today compared to yesterday, even though we started off significantly cooler in the 40s and 50s. we're up into the 60s and 70s and just about all neighborhoods. in fact, mainly seventies. we've got 66 at half moon bay in san francisco low 70s around the bay and mid to upper 70s inland and in 81 right now in fairfield. so that's going to leave us a really comfortable evening till about 8 o'clock when those temperatures really start to drop we'll show you that forecast coming up first. let's talk about how much warmer they say double digits in places like the north bay a little bit of that southerly wind coming in earlier today underneath that offshore. thanks to that area of high pressure. remember these two areas alone. we talked about last week. they're going to come in and push that away from us and sure enough they have and it was this low that we saw last week. that was the possibility of bringing us some rain, but it's going to stay offshore and just kick some high clouds at us as you can see on the visible satellite the next several days. in fact, it'll just be high cloudiness tonight for most of us and around 50 in santa rosa

california in 1849, the state was flooded with people from all over the world seeking their fortune 90% of these new immigrants. men the social structure of the mining camps and boomtowns paved the way for intimate relationships stories lost to time until now. when gold was discovered in california the world rushed west men and some women dropped everything to get rich most didn't find gold but many found comfort in same-sex relationships. what we know is that they were probably quite common, but you know, we don't have the documentation to say how common historian and author susan lee johnson literally wrote the book on life in the mining camps during the california gold rush. she says documenting the lives of lgbtq+ 49ers isn't easy.

an excitement in such a wealth claire sears is an author and sociologist who studied cross-gender dressing among 49ers now they had to really figure out how to organize their social lives that domestic lives and their sexual lives in the virtual absence of women. a lot of opportunities opened up in that kind of space for a wide range of cross-gender practices and same-sex intimacy. she says we can't put modern labels on people at the time calling them gay lesbian bisexual or transgender because such terms didn't exist at the time but in the city's rock as barbary coast, there is clear evidence that same sex relationships and gender non-conforming behavior. what's happening? one of the main things that was happening in this area early on in the gold rush. i'm talking about kind of really the early 1850s. there were these masquerade balls. they're really infamous. dances that took place around here but in san francisco where there were some women around and women's clothing was in circulation a lot of men would

dress up kind of in full drag to attend these masquerade balls. some women would attend. they would dress up as men. charlie parkers was a man from boston. he moved to san francisco in 1849 as part of the gold rush. he became a stage coach driver and died when he was 67 of cancer and during autopsychana announced that he was female. when families started to arrive from the east coast in the late 1850s and 1860s there were calls to crack down on the debauchery in the city to make it more family-friendly the city's board of supervisors passed legislation making it illegal to appear in public in dress not belonging to his or her sex from many people who made their way west the gold rush wasn't just an opportunity to find wealth but to find themselves, you know, they wanted to find their stake in life. they're independence and the discovery of gold offered that possibility cornell bernard abc

this is a journey into outer space. virtual reality technology makes you feel like you're actually there. eric albert is co-ceo of infinity experiences incorporated putting down the space explorers the infinite exhibit at the craneway pavilion in richmond. he says this has been in the making for nearly seven years with them sending cameras to the international space station. so we've been capturing this amazing virtual reality content both inside and outside of the

international space station and we get these amazing views for the shots that were done outside of the space station. of course, i had to try for myself. i put on a headset get a briefing and voila. it's like i'm in space and i'm told there's people all around me, but when i put on the headset, i just feel like i'm inside the international space station like it's only me here and the best part for me the spacewalk with two astronauts. so in my head there right now, i can see astronauts in front of me and when i look down i could see the entire planet. it's really incredible. that's when you get a glimpse of what the overview effect is like when you see earth from space albert says this is as close to it as most of us will experience with that actually going to space. it's basically this this feeling of transcendence almost spiritual feeling of looking at earth from that vantage point, you know when you see it, it is entirety. there's no borders. there's no passports. we're all living basically on this small little blue dot in the middle of infinity as the name of the exhibition and it really makes you realize how fragile planet earth is it's unbelievable. crazy, so real and tickets are $44 for adults. there will be enrichment through november 23rd. i was just saying they could add a weightless component. next abc 7 news is streaming 24/7 get the abc 7 bay area
