oakland fire broke out. it was thought to be under control that morning. it was spreading rapidly and killed 25 people. it destroyed 3500 homes. at the time the fire was one of the most destructive in >> california history. >>the notion that oakland residents have been feeling unsafe has now found numbers to back that up. after surveying almost 600 residents, results showed residents are feeling pessimistic about the response to crime. >> the data is in. the results are staggering. cito

or even as an adult. >> the board president showed the survey showed they want more police officers. >> part of the problem is we do not have enough police officers. >> the oakland police officers association says they are understaffed. >> we are down to 678 police officers today. that is about a hundred less than where we were before the pandemic. >> homelessness and housing costs continue to be some of the most acute problems facing oakland right now. >> people cannot afford their rent. so they are out here in the streets. everyone is to blame. >> they also found that two

oakland city council members are in a tight race for mayor. the third highest ranked candidate was a former city councilmember. there are a total of 10 candidates running for mayor. >> as campaign seat up, bay area registrars are already receiving ballots. we got a behind-the-scenes look at the work they are doing and what they want bay area voters to know about. >> election day is fast approaching. they are working hard to make sure every vote is counted. they hosted a day for the public on wednesday.

right now a lot of the work being done to process ballots is happening in this room. behind me they are being flattened. the registrar tells me already at this point thousands of ballots have already come in. there are more than 100 million active registered voters in the county. the primary in june saw an extremely low turnout. >> they are making the decisions for 100% of all of our voters. they are the 35% that went out and voted have their voices heard. i want a higher turnout so more voices are heard. >> she says a key message her office and others around the state are trying to make is that

functional restroom. >> san francisco is not ready to give up yet. why not here? the city has secured state funding to build a small public bathroom right in the heart of the snowy valley neighborhood at the cost of $1.7 million. >> put it to better use. this is ridiculous. >> that is the estimate given by the department of recreation because of all the permits and planning that would be involved. city officials hope it will not cost that much. >> they have an idea of what it will be. but i don't think they have the formal, final plans yet area now they will be in position to put all of that together. >> people here asked to have it in place.
