have been forged by partnerships, promises as she dealt with crime, homelessness and the rising cost of living. she accepted full responsibility for the current spike in crime and acknowledges it will be a challenge for the next mayor. >> we have, seen the most sustained. of the fewest murders in oakland history. what a tragedy to lose that incredible progress. >> despite the homeless encampments that plagued the city, the city has made big strides. have increased shelter capacity, decreased homeless capacity and helped residents avoid evictions amend -- a missed rate hikes. -- admist rate hikes. >> city staff tells me this is

the biggest housing building boom that oakland has ever had since the 1906 earthquake. >> the mayor also talked about losing three major sports teams. a growing racial wealth gap. the mayor was able to reach big goals raising private money, not to -- not through the city budget. her message to the next mayor -- >> invest in partnerships. no complex problems get solved without big partnerships. >> in oakland, abc 7 news. dan: a newly released study shows majority of oaklanders are deeply pessimistic about the direction of the city. a new promo shows nearly half of poll voters do not see oakland is a good place to live anymore. concerns about safety are at an

all-time high. top photo concerns continue to be homeless this -- homelessness and housing. now, gun crimes as well. >> they feel less safe in their own neighborhood. this is relative to what we have seen historically. dan: in terms of the upcoming election, to city council members are frontrunners. taylor is endorsed by the outgoing mayor and san francisco mayor. 20% find the vote for powell, endorsed by the city's biggest labor unions. the third highest rate was former councilmember with 11%. 10 the are running for mayor to take the place of the outgoing mayor. it will cost the bay, turning towards san francisco. an out post from the ceo of a

company slamming crime in the city saying it is forcing the closure of the bay valley store. our abc 7 reporter is getting answers. tim: the ceo says they have had some incidents at the store they have lost count. several of his employees say they no longer feel safe working at the store. they made the decision to close, at least for now. after operating in the city for only a year, a high-end outdoor clothing company has decided they have had enough of san francisco. the main reason is that they have been the target of repeated break-ins. >> within the first couple days we see the entire front window is smashed in and they have looted our store. tim: the ceo spoke to us from utah, company headquarters. he has said over the last 12 months, the san francisco store has lost money. he complains about the city in

chaos. it inspired a viral outpost. >> dozens of incidences. it happens multiple times a week. tim: he says his family in the city and is familiar with many of the problems facing san francisco. despite expensing crime on previous visits, he was excited to open up a local store and was shocked by what is unfolding. >> to open up a store where the window is smashed in four times in the first few weeks, organized crime, we never expect that. i never imagined it would be the case. tim: these are not isolated feelings. crime is one of the top issues local businesses worry about. >> the general perception of things, homelessness, cleanliness, crime, it all conflates and creates this perception that things are in chaos. tim: smith says his company will

support groups that help provide support for those most in need but until something changes in france's cisco, he does not know when or if -- in the san francisco, he does not know when or if they will reopen. >> it depends on how long it takes to create solutions for this problem. tim: i did reach out to the san francisco police department to ask him about break-ins. they sent me a statement which reads, we are aware of incidences that have occurred on the block and the burglar unit is actively investigating. tim johnson, abc 7 news. dan: a man who is dating san francisco sheriff has testified. we were there in san jose as he emerged from the courtroom. he retired from the family business 30 years ago. he testified that he has stated sheriff smith for three years.

he says he has given the sheriff's board money and has arranged construction crews to improve the gun range. he, his son and other relatives have received gun permits from the sheriff. tori smith is standing trial. developing new's tonight. you may hear more over the next few days about another pg and e public safety power shut off. the bay area seems to be out of the range for now. customers in shasta, tekamah and for lucy counties are on alert -- and volusa counties are on alert. it expands to monterey on sunday and a possibility of a power shut off continues into monday. as we have seen in the past, that can always change. with this weather, many are noticing it has been calm and it comes to wildfires this year. this is peak fire season for our

area. tonight, first responders tell abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo, we have been lucky. it does not mean it will last. amanda: california's 2022 fall season has been much quieter than in years past. stats show that as of october 10, more than 366,000 acres have burned this year. last year, nearly 2.5 million acres total. the interdependent -- interdisciplinary research center shows why. warm weather shows the best chance for wildfires. >> this is what we expect. we have had multiple days like this. amanda: northern california is familiar. october alone has brought some of the states deadliest and most destructive wildfires. in apirit what hasng -- and sonoma

the unpredictability of the weather proves that anything is possible. >> the camp fire of 2018 started on november 8. we are not out of the woods. amanda: in san jose, amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. dan: 31 years since one fire sparked, causing an unforgettable disaster in the hills. >> houses, trees, i don't think we will stop this soon. dan: they could not. the oakland firestorm exploded in 1991. it started on this state in a private property. fierce wind would reignite and quickly overwhelmed the area. it ultimately killed 25 people and destroyed 3500 homes. it was the most destructive fire in state history at that time. as we take a look back, check out our documentary, firestorm.
