good evening. thank you for joining us. teen twins escape a real-life house of horrors, allegedly held captive inside their houston home. they go door to door before a stranger comes to their rescue. >> reporter: these are the harrowing images of a brother and sister who police say were being held captive in their own home. >> please help us. please help us. >> reporter: there were signs on their arms they'd been handcuffed. >> they were saying they'd just

gotten here from baton rouge so they didn't know where they lived. >> reporter: 5:30 a.m. tuesday morning the pair approached the door of a neighbor who wants to remain anonymous. the woman taking the teens in, the brother and sister telling her they hadn't eaten in more than a week and they'd unsuccessfully tried to escape the day before. >> she got caught and her mom beat her, hit her in the head. >> reporter: law enforcement issuing an amber alert for their five siblings, authorities looking for her mother 40-year-old zakia duncan and her boyfriend both later arrested in baton rouge on preliminary charges of assault and continuous violence. authorities say the five children have been found safe. we turn now to the world of ethically certified coffee farms. those labels that stand for the products consumers can buy made without child labor and that the workers make a living wage. our investigation highlight what is consumers need to understand

about those labels. here's abc's senior investigative correspondent david scott. >> reporter: it's just past 4:00 a.m. in a jungle road in southern mexico, known as "the coffee route." rising into the highlands this road is lined with ethically certified coffee farms. yet, we've come to investigate reports of human rights abuses from these remote mountainsides. we're investigating a farm that has a certification where we've been told children are working in the fields. >> david, i've got to tell you that if we are to expose the fact that children are picking coffee, this puts them out of business. we're in a little bit of danger

here. >> this behind me is the farm of interest today. quite soon the day will begin here and workers will start arriving. ♪ >> walking into almost any grocery store in america and you're likely to see them, lttle stamps with promos that leave big impressions. as consumers become increasingly conscious of what they buy, corporations have turned to an array of ethical certification groups, advertising their products are bettering the world. ethical certification has grown rapidly. >> you want to do something about it.

you must do something about it. >> one of the most widely respected names, rainforest alliance has racked up celebrity endorsements and partnered with whole foods, starbucks, walmart and mcdonald's. >> mccafe believes in 100% arabica beans. >> is there a disconnect between what's happening on the ground and what consumers might expect? we wanted to see how ethically sourced coffee was produced here in chiapas, the southernmost state in mexico. the roosters are crowing, so the sun is about to come up. >> reporter: we're up before sunrise outside a rainforest certified coffee farm. not long after we set up, workers emerge from the farm's

dormitories to begin the day's harvest. among them, children. [ speaking non-english ] >> wow. there are kids, i think, around 4 years old carrying baskets. >> they're going into the jungle. they're going where the coffee fields are. >> the kids are, at least under the rain forest alliance charte, supposed to be in school right now. >> i don't think they're walking to school. >> this is child labor. >> reporter: before long, our presence on the public road starts to draw attention. >> we're spotted. >> yeah, we are. >> reporter: on the advice of

our local producers, we quickly exit the area. [ speaking non-english ] >> reporter: but later that afternoon we return to confirm the children we saw are actually working. >> we needed to clear the area this morni gmorning, because wi minutes they are onto us. >> reporter: at the time of our visit in 2021, the farm awas certified compliant with most rainforest alliance policies, including the prohibition on child labor. but when we arrive, we find children working in plain sight on the side of the road. >> alyssa. elias. >> reporter: more than a dozen of them carrying sacks, sorting coffee cherries, some apparently under the age of 6, while infants sit out in the tropical heat as their parents labor for hours nearby. one boy agrees to speak with us. how old are you? >> 12. >> that's very difficult work, huh? is there a school here for you? >> no. >> there can be no question about child labor on this farm. >> reporter: but days before we

saw children working on the coffee farm, we saw another side of line for rainforest alliance farmers. we met up with fernando balltista from the rainforest alliance to a different form which he said was a model farm. fernando, the rainforest alliance regional lead, to ask him about the children we saw working. >> we took these pictures at one of your certified farms. we watched very young children working hard. how can it be that we come here for a week and can easily see this right out in the open? >> reporter: ultimately, our team filmed evidence of child labor at three rainforest

alliance certified farms in chiapas last year. we reached out to their headquarters, located here in downtown manhattan, and requested an interviw with their leadership. they declined, but provided information in a statement that reads in part, child labor is a grave human rights abuse and has no place in a responsible business. our system does not promise to be infallible. we're trying hard to prevent, monitor and remediate situations as we are made aware of them. we are fully aware this often can be an uphill battle. we provided the alliance with a detailed description of what we found on our trip. while they did not want to comment and did not acknowledge the existence of child labor on any farms we identified, they did say they were in violation of rainforest alliance's assess
