at a mansion in atherton. sky 7 overhead as investigators and search dogs search for a car, fully buried in the backyard of this multimillion dollar home. the questions are swirling tonight. dan: thank you for joining us. investigators are working to uncover any other clues to help put together what else might be hiding under that dirt. ana: the car was first found this morning under the gated home on stockbridge avenue in the peninsula neighborhood. tim johns has the latest from atherton. tim: crews have been in the back excavating the scene for hours, and it does not seem like they will be done anytime soon. the police department stressing this is an ongoing and active investigation. initial calls came in around 8:50 in atherton. landscapers called them after discovering a buried car in the

backyard of a local home. >> the vehicle was possibly buried sometime in the 1990's, and was buried approximately four to five feet in the ground. tim: crime scene techs and cadaver dogs were brought to the scene. the dogs made a slight notification of possible human remains but none have been found. sky 7 video shows crews working through the day, excavating and collecting evidence. >> there were unused bags of concrete in the vehicle. tim: atherton is one of the wealthiest communities in the bay area, home to many palatial homes and quiet streets. neighbors say they are shocked about what happened. >> it is safe and everyone is doing their own thing. nothing out of the norm. everything is fine. tim: police say the vehicle was buried before the current homeowners took possession of the house. atherton pd say they are cooperating with authorities. ana: and there is certainly much more that will be uncovered with this case. we will have our team committed

twitter employee and being told you may not have a job once this deal closes. amanda: mark is an. attorney with a firm that filed a shareholder lawsuit against muska earlier this year. he says by taking the company private, and whatever board will be in place will have the ability to direct the company's operations as they see fit. until then, he says current twitter employees have a few things to consider. >> whether they are entitled to stock, for example. whether the effect of this type of decision and the timing of it is meant to reduce the amount of stock or stock options they would otherwise be entitled to under a merger. those are some of the things i would be looking at if i was a twitter employee. amanda: the company headquartered in san francisco. the post says the move would bring twitter's entire workforce down to 2000 people. >> you need to do so many things that ai cannot do. amanda: he says taking humans

out of the equation will impact operations. the platform would be without institutional knowledge to moderate content and protect security. >> he might know how to make a car, but to run a media company like this with all the factors around it, worried about the offensive comments, offensive content, worried about the spam that is going to happen, the hacking that is going to happen, that is a different story. amanda: the news of potentially slashing staff in a number of months is the latest in an ongoing saga surrounding musk and twitter. >> he is dealing with people's lives stay beings -- life savings. ana: san francisco apparently has a glut of empty homes. a new report says it has the highest vacancy rate compared to other major u.s. cities. overall, it is close to 15%. boston is the next highest

around 11%, followed by washington, d.c. a report by the city found there were about 40,000 vacant homes in 2019. that shot up to around 60,000 last year, an increase of 52%. one area that stakes out is the rental vacancy rate. it rose by 142%. the report points to the pandemic is one of the main reasons for the increase. dan: in the north bay, they were deliberately setting fires in sonoma county. firefighters doing a controlled burn to clear 15 acres at jack london state park. with no end in sight to the drought, this was an opportunity for cal fire to keep ahead of mother nature. this particular spot has not seen a wildfire in decades. >> this is the perfect place to be doing this type of management, to control fuels, improve the forest health, and frankly make everything healthier and more prepared for when a wildfire does come. dan: calfire did alert the

public several days in advance about the controlled burn, but says there were still a number of calls to 911 when people in linnell and started seeing the smoke and they were concerned, understandably. this time of the year, october, very vulnerable for us in terms of fire season. ana:sa patel is here with the changes coming on the way. sandhya: those changes are going to be big enough for you to notice and the fire danger will be higher. let's take a look at the picture from the camera. the fog helped to drop the temperatures. double digits this afternoon. right now, seven degrees cooler in novato. in san jose, temperatures in the 50's and 60's. this weekend, we are expecting major changes, cooler days, colder nights, gusty winds as of this system in the gulf of alaska drops down

it will also pick up the winds strong enough to raise that fire danger. you look at saturday. notice the high to very high fire danger for parts of the north and east bay hills. in the sierra around truckee, tahoe, they are facing a fire weather watch beginning tomorrow night, continuing into saturday, as gusty winds and low humidity raise fire danger. i will be back with the full forecast coming up. ama: our mission to build a better bay area means being in the community to find solutions for our neighborhoods. tonight, leaders in oakland came together to celebrate the town and find out what it will take to move past recent weeks of violence. ryan curry was there and shares their message. ♪ ryan: it is a night focused on coming together, a night designed to look past the violence. ♪ ryan: and have a good time. or at least, attempt to have a good time. and applause] ryan: community leaders join for a gathering of peace and love, something the city is in desperate need of. >> there's a lot of people who don't feel love, so this is an example of how we can come together as a community and feel love. ryan: the oakland mayor called it love life night in oakland. she presented keys to the city took four community members who have dedicated time to stopping violence. one of the recipients -- >was a local rapper. >> the mission is to spread love. ryan: oakland has seen a great deal of violence, including many shootings and more than 100 homicides. even city hall has not been immune to the violence. there was police tape right here as a result of a shooting at the end of september. but thursday nights's message was about changing that. it is about messages of love. >> we continue to make a

proposition explainor videos. election day is november 8. ama: a new law goes into effect in fremont today. attending and promoting sideshows is prohibited in the study. the city council approved the law last month. [engine reving] ama: they will vote at the end of the month. officials say sideshows can lead to fatal collisions and property damage. san francisco is considering renaming stow lake because of the history behind the person it is named after. according to the chronicle, three supervisors are behind the proposal. the lake got its name from william stowe, and assembly member who served on the part commission in the 1890's. he pushed anti-semitic policies, including one aimed at driving out jewish residents from his district. dan: san francisco will end its public health emergency declaration for monkeypox at the end of this month.

the department of public health says new cases have slowed to less than one per day. more than 27,000 residents have been vaccinated. officials say eligible san franciscans who have not been vaccinated should be, including getting a second dose for maximum protection. ama: no more waiting in long lines to get your passport renewed. president biden signed an exec of order for people to renew their passport through a temporary online portal. it was quietly announced last week after a pilot program in vibrate. they are staggering the availability to avoid any crashes. the next open will be sometime in november. processing and cost will be the same as mailing in the paperwork. dan: you have likely seen these wild critters creeping around during. the pandemic images of coyotes wondering empty bay area streets. we spotted them outside our building here in san francisco right downtown. experts say this has led to an increase in human a centers. they recommend keeping a close eye on pets and keeping small

dogs on leashes when walking them on trails. as for the coyotes, expect their behavior to eventuallyehang as we continue to return to normalcy. >> in terms of how they might readapt to increased traffic again or changes in human behavior, they are pretty smart. dan: they are crafty. experts say coyotes rarely come after people unless they become too comfortable in their environment. ama: happening now, you might want to take a peek outside. this is a live look from the east bay hills. the orion admin use shower is starting to become visible, but you will need to stay up late to see it. the celestial show is peaking from 1:00 to 3:00 a.m. it produces around 20 meteors and our. they range in size from a golf ball to a living room sofa. the meteors appear when the earth travels through the debris of haley's,. -- of haley's comet. dan: i will be looking upwards.

[laughter] sandhya: and you know what? i think where dan is, without giving away where he lives, he will be able to actually see them. but if you are near the coast, you will be socked in with the fog, so that will be difficult to see. let's talk about la niña and the upcoming winter. la niña, cooler than average conditions near the equatorial pacific. noaa issued its winter outlook and they are saying a moderate lending you will continue this upcoming winter. this is the third winter in a row with a la niña, equal chances of above, near or below precipitation. we are looking at above average temperatures here. typically it is wetter across the northwest and drier across the southern tier states. here is a look at the precipitation and that is what they are predicting. the great lakes above average,

southern tier states unfortunately, which includes parts of california, going to be below average. warmer than average in terms of temperatures to the bay area and much of the southwest u.s. northern tier states looking out below average in terms of temperatures. but those temperatures above average all the way across the south and the eastern seaboard. the drought is expected to continue out west or get worse. the exception being the bay area, possibly seeing an improvement, and the northwest seeing an improvement or the drought ending as they are expecting wetter than normal conditions. that is where this atmospheric river is headed this upcoming weekend, which is why the pacific northwest will get a nice soaking. here in the bay area, maybe a. -- maybe a couple sprinkles. the fog over san francisco, the cooling trend continuing to the weekend.
