d ask about attr-cm. >> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7 news. >> a tremendous loss for our program and the university, but society generally. >> a san jose state freshman football player being remembered after being hit and killed by a school bus this morning. thank you for joining us. >> the deadly crash marks the city of san jose's 57th traffic fatality of the year. it comes hours before the football team was scheduled to travel to new mexico for again tomorrow. >> they are all devastated. in an hour, a candlelight vigil was planned at the scene. dustin dorsey has more on how the spartan community is handling this tremendous loss. >> hours before the san jose state football team was set to

board a plane to play new mexico state, the team suffered an unbelievable tragedy. the freshman running back was struck at a school bus while writing an electric scooter. he sadly lost his life. as steve perez was fighting off emotions what speaking with the media. >> it is deeply felt on our campus. >> the accident happened blocks up the road from the football facility and 30 minutes before a team meeting was set to begin. the highway patrol told us witnesses say the bus carrying 14 students was driving through a green light when he was fatally hit. >> what we know is the school bus was traveling east, entered the intersection, and the male was traveling on an election scooter north. -- electric scooter north. he was struck by the school bus and sustained fatal injuries. >> the football team and staff learned of his death during their meeting and spent the majority of the day deciding on what to do with their scheduled

game against new mexico state. >> we were there as buses left the facility originally scheduled to take the team to the airport. the head coach shown speaking with president perez, saying in a statement "we lost an amazing young man tragically this morning." the athletics director says the tightknit spartan community is mourning the loss. >> very bright, articulate, energetic individual. was a freshman. beloved by the team. had a great personality. a tremendous loss for our program and the university, but society generally. >> he was the third major loss in the past year for the spartan program. a former running back and a information director died last spring. the school and athletics department say they will continue to stand together through tragedy, spartan strong. >> we are here to support each other, to love each other, and we are going to do what we need to do and whatever we need to do to support our students,

community, and student athletes. >> as far as the game after, weighing options, the team postponed the contest against new mexico state. in san jose, dustin dorsey. >> now to the developing story out of adverting. crews were continuing to excavate a mercedes-benz convertible on the property of a $15 million mansion. the discovery was made on stockbridge avenue by a landscaping crew. a cadaver dog has gotten at least two hits, one today, and one last night. a few hours ago, we received an update from police. suzanne font joins us with the latest. >> we learned from police a couple of key things. the car they found was reported stolen in september 1992. it was a convertible mercedes-benz. we still don't know who buried it or why. a potential crime scene. >> it looks like a netflix

concrete, they launched an investigation. the car was buried four to five feet underground and had been buried since the 1990's. richard lives a street over from the home under investigation. he's seen the sky 7 video of the excavation. >> it can happen anywhere, but it cannot be a crime scene unless they find some bones or something. > neighbors are stunned, some believe they knew the previous owner. >> we knew the guy a little bit. if it is the gentleman i remember, he was a doctor at stanford. >> the current homeowners are cooperating with authorities in the investigation. police believe the car was buried before the current owners moved in. investigators are done excavating the majority of the passenger compartment of the car. late today, police say they are not sure if it is a criminal investigation or a noncriminal investigation. in atherton, suzanne fawn. >> a lot more to come.

breonna taylor, icons of the black lives matter movement. it was this mural honoring taylor and calling out her murder, which sparked this act of violence in 2020. this man was caught on camera back then trying to remove them euro. he is seen pointing a weapon at community members who tried to stop him. >> do you live here -- >> the entire process is in response to that community tension and the need for conversation and healing. >> he says two years later, the healing has begun on this corner, symbolizing not only social justice, but community equity, and maybe a chance to start a conversation about our differences. >> it is that phrase of beautiful tragedies that make us who we are. to really sit down and understand that, so we can understand each other better. that is what i hope when people see that it lights the fuse for them to have that conversation. >> cornell bernard, abc7 news.
