>> this is abc7news. ama: a buried car found at an app or 10 home as investigators continue today, we are getting new details about the homes previous owner who had quite a reputation. dan: thanks for joining us. it's not clear if the rare -- there are remains inside the mercedes-benz but we are learning more about the person who once owned the home and had numerous run-ins with the law. tim johns has been following this story since it broke last night. he's in the newsroom with what he's found out this evening. reporter: the police department says crews have spent another day trying to excavate the

scene. only the top of the car is out of the ground and they haven't revealed who it was registered to. authorities say no human remains have been found but cadaver dogs gave slight indications that something could be in that car. in one of the wealthiest towns in america, a suspicious scene is still unfolding. >> it looks like a netflix video or a series. reporter: landscapers working at the mansion discovered a car that was buried in the backyard of a home. >> the vehicle was possibly buried sometime in the 1990's and was buried approximately four to six feet underground. reporter: no remains have been found. cadaver dogs brought on scene gave indication something could be very deeper down. >> it could be human rain -- remains. they could be reacting to blood, to old bones, to human vomit. reporter: it's a mercedes-benz that was reported stolen to the palo alto police department in 1992.

police believe it was buried at that same time. the owner of the home at the time has since come under the spotlight. not least of all for his past which includes arrests for crimes such as murder and insurance flawed. >> he was arrested for arranging to have a yacht sunk so he could collect the insurance proceeds. reporter: he died several years ago and the house has changed hands several times. the current owners have no idea what was underneath their backyard. the district attorney says he's keeping an eye on the investigation. >> i said, this sounds so like we are dealing with file play of some port. -- sort. reporter: police and other authorities have stressed that no criminal charges have been brought against anyone. for now, we wait for answers. >> sometimes they come in 48 hours. other times it's legwork, search

a shooting left six people injured and have the principal asking for more matching backpacks. during the chaos, orange back tax helped police and staff identify students. no arrests have been made. dan: tomorrow, san francisco unified begins its enrollment process for the next school year. for the first time since the start of the pandemic, in person enrollment will be held. families signing up for prekindergarten, transitional kindergarten, and elementary school can go to john o'connell high school tomorrow. new sfusd superintendent matt wayne talked about the enrollment and getting answers at 3:00 today. >> enrollment didn't decline as much as projected. there are some things outside of our control. we are showcasing the amazing work that's happening in the district and those opportunities that students have. dan: the presentations will be posted online. in person workshops for families with older children will be held next week and smaller workshops will be held next month.

today, a u.s. appeals court blocked president biden's student loan debt relief program. six republican lead states challenged bidens policy. they claim the biden ministration has no legal authority to issue broad student loan forgiveness. biden talked about his support of the loan program today and his administration is continuing hoping people will apply while this legal saga unfolds. >> today, we are following through on a promise i gave to millions of americans. together, we are making our democracy deliver for the american people. dan: earlier this week, a dismissed the same case, ruling the states did not have the legal standing to sue over this issue. ama: turning now to the latest coronavirus headlines. pfizer's vaccine will cost up to $130 once government contracts expire. the company says it expect people to pay less.

one california county has low virus community levels according to the cdc. that data is based on the number of cases and hospitalizations. the number of cases of the xp b variant have doubled in the united states but remain rare. 47 have been reported nationwide with 10 of them in california. a recent study that ties hair straightening chemicals to uterine cancer has led to a lawsuit. it was filed today on behalf of a woman who contracted uterine cancer after her use of chemical hair straightening products sold by l'oreal. she is suing the company as well as multiple others. in 2018, the woman was diagnosed with uterine cancer despite having no family history of cancer. she had to undergo a full hysterectomy. l'oreal has not commented on the suit. dan: development versus need. why some oakland residents are asking the city to say no to home depot. ama: put that commode on hold.

building a public restroom in san francisco, saying it would be flushing money away. that's a reaction to a plan we told you about earlier this week. the city secured state funding to build a bathroom in the town square. after learning about the price tag, the governor's office released a statement saying the state will hold funding until san francisco comes up with a plan to use the money more efficiently. if not, they plan to revoke the funding. abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area and one of the big issues were focusing on is the economy. in oakland, a project is pitting the demand for housing against jobs. our rally took place tonight against the plan to build a home depot at a shopping center. it would go near the insect -- intersection of broadway and pleasant valley, an area that is a prime spot for housing. ryan curry has the story. >> we are coming out and making

a statement. reporter: you see these people? they don't want this lot to be a place to buy tools. they don't want the lot to be a place to buy anything used to build a home. they want the lot to become homes. >> yes to housing. reporter: that's the goal of friday nights demonstration. instead of a home depot, they would rather it be turned into a place for people to live. >> it brings more people to the neighborhood which brings more shoppers to our local businesses , safety to the streets. reporter: multiple neighborhood groups gathered to protest against the chain home improvement store. at a time were limited housing is an issue in many cities, protesters say it's time to build more. >> we are in a housing crisis and we need to build more units. we've come to this spot, we are crunched together. we want to highlight that this is really a huge eyesore and a vacant lot.

it's a huge canvas of opportunity. reporter: the person who owns the property is going to build a 102,000 square-foot home depot at this location. it's right next to a busy street. >> the city wanted housing. the developer was open to housing. the site owner will not allow housing on the site. reporter: if home depot gets built in this lot, protesters worry about pedestrian safety. you can already see just how busy this road is. >> as it is, we can barely cross the street. we are talking about an incredible increase in volume. reporter: both cooper and farmer say the city supports them in their push to get more housing but this lot is not owned by the city which is why on friday, they are urging the landowner to consider building housing. >> for whoever will hear, the powers at hand, we want them to know that the community supports housing here. we will be here to support it through the process. reporter: abc7news.

dan: in the north bay, a new social justice public art piece will be dedicated tomorrow. is being installed in the wake of a controversy. in 2020, a man was caught on camera trying to remove a chalk art mural honoring breonna taylor in san rafael. two years later, three painted panels have taken the murals place. they are inspired by the words freedom, justice, liberty. the panels bear the names of taylor, george floyd, and ahmaud arbery, now icons of the black lives matter movement. >> beautiful tragedies, that's what make us who we are. for us to sit down and understand, we can understand each other better. that's what i'm hoping. wanting people to have those conversations. dan: the piece is called regeneration, sponsored by the marin nonprofit youth in arts. the next week is your opportunity to try out san francisco's best restaurants at a discount.
