>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. liz: mystery surrounding a buried car found in atherton home. we are getting new details this morning about the criminal past of the home's previous owner. good morning. it is saturday, october 22. i am liz kreutz, here with lisa argen. it is finally feeling like fall. lisa: we have a cold front on the way bringing some light precip to e it is milder at 58 . temperatures in the low 60's at the san carlos airport. fog from pacifica to half moon bay. as we look at the 24 hour temperature change, it feels milder now but we are adding gusty winds anywhere from 29 to over 30 miles per hour.

san mateo, getting pretty breezy. upper elevations, winds will gust in excess of 20 miles per hour. we are mostly cloudy as a cold front pushes through. cool this afternoon, a wind advisory at the coast. partly cloudy with temperatures in the low 70's. winds building from the coast. we have a fire weather watch to watch around the delta. liz: on the peninsula, it is still not clear if there are remains inside the mercedes-benz discovered buried in the backyard of a mansion in atherton. there are details about the person who once owned the home and had numerous run-ins with the law. tim johns has been following the story and explains what you know so far. tim: in one of the wealthiest towns in america, a suspicious seat is unfolding. >> it looks like a netflix

series. >> landscapers working at an atherton mansion discovered a car buried in the backyard of a home on stockbridge avenue. >> the vehicle was possibly buried sometime in the 1990's and was buried approximately four to six feet underground. >> so far, no remains of been found although cadaver dogs give an indication something could be buried deeper down. >> it could be human remains, they could be reacting to blood, old bones, human vomit. >> the vehicle was a mercedes-benz reported stolen in 1992. around the same time police believe it was buried. the owner of the house at the time was a man named johnny bocktune lew. he has come under the spotlight for his past, including arrest for crimes such as murder and insurance fraud. >> he was arrested for arranging to have a yacht sunk so he could

collect the insurance proceeds. >> mr. lew died a few years ago and the home has changed hands. the current owner said they had no idea was buried in the backyard. the district attorney said he is keeping an eye on the investigation. >> when i first heard about it, it sounds like we are dealing without play. >> the case remains open and ongoing. authorities have stressed no criminal charges have been brought against anyone. for now, we wait for answers. >> sometimes these answers come in 24 to 48 hours. other times, it is work, search warrants, looking at old records. liz: events are being put on hold at san jose state following the death of a football player. camdan mcwright was struck by a bus yesterday morning. tara campbell was at a vigil last night and tells us his

death has sent shockwaves through the community. >> players, coaches, friends and the community marching and mourning after the death of san jose state football player camdan mcwright. the 18-year-old freshman was struck by a school bus a while riding an electric scooter near campus. >> i am sorry i have to say goodbye, brother. you did not deserve to go like this. >> just hours later, those loved ones holding tightly to one another and the memories. gathering at the scene of the deadly accident for a nighttime vigil. >> being with cam every day, i knew he would go to war with me. >> from the football team to his friends. >> paying respects to my best friend, camdan. >> diane went to high school with camdan in southern california. >> he was a beautiful soul and

we are going to carry him. >> goodbye, brother. bre-- rest in peace. >> camdan mcwright's death is being felt miles away. camdan was a two-time m.v.p. on the school's football team and ran track and field. his former school principal shared kind words. >> he was every teacher's favorite. he was a teacher's dream. he was prepared for classes. when he was on the field a running track, he was always prepared. liz: the football team had a game on friday night, when they pay tribute to camdan. at san jose state, camdan was planning to major in communications with one day having hopes of being a sports analyst. in the east bay, a big donation to a school that was recently

shaken by a shooting. the chinatown improvement council is giving the school 400 backpacks. a shooting on campus last month left six people injured and left the principal asking for more matching backpacks. the backpacks help police identify students. no arrests have been made. san francisco unified is starting its enrollment process for next go year. the first time since the start of the pandemic, in person enrollment fares will be held. transitional kindergarten, elementary school can go to john o'connell high school starting at 10:00 in the morning. the usd superintendent talked about enrollment are 3:00 p.m. show. >> there are some things outside of our control. what is inside our control is showcasing the amazing work inside the district and the opportunities that student have.

pfizer's vaccine will cost up to $130 once government contracts expire. the company says it expects people to pay a lot less out-of-pocket. all but one california county has low virus levels. the data is based on the number of cases and hospitalizations. the number of cases of the variance have doubled in the united states but they do remain rare. 47 have been reported nationwide, with 10 of them in california. a recent study that ties here straightening chemicals to uterine cancer has led to a lawsuit. the lawsuit was filed friday by a woman who developed cancer after her use of here stringing products. she is suing the company and multiple others. in 2018, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer despite having no family history of cancer. she had to undergo a full hysterectomy. lisa, 6:09 on this saturday

liz: the governor's office says building a million-dollar expense of restroom would be flushing money away.

that is the governor's reaction. the city had secured state funding to build a small public bathroom in the town square. after learning about the price tag, the governor's office released a statement to the chronicle on friday, saying the state will hold funding until san francisco comes up with a plan to use the money more efficiently. if not, the governor's office plans to revoke the funding. abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area. one issue we are focused on is the economy. in oakland, the demand for housing is pitted against jobs. a rally against a plan to build a home depot and a shopping center. this would go near the intersection of broadway and pleasant valley in an area where people say is a prime spot for housing. ryan curry has the story. >> we are coming out on a cold evening and making a statement. >> you see these people? they do not want this lot to be a place to buy tools. >> no home depot.

>> the do not want the lot to be used to buy anything to build a home. they want a lot to become homes. that is the goal of friday night's demonstration. instead of a home depot plan to go into this empty lot, they would rather it being turned into a place for people to live. >> more shoppers were come to our local businesses, it brings safety to the streets. >> multiple neighborhood groups came to protest against the chain home improvement store. housing is an issue for many, people say it is time to build more. >> we are in a housing crisis and we need to build more units. this is a huge spot. we want to show and highlight this is really a huge eyesore and a vacant lot that has been vacant for a long time. it is also a huge canvas of opportunity. >> the person who owns the property has plans to work with the developer to build a 102,000

foot home depot. it is adjacent to other apartment complexes. >> the city wanted housing, the developer was open to housing, it was only the site owner who will not allow housing on the site. >> if home depot does get built on this lot, protesters worry about pedestrian safety. you can already see how busy the road already is. >> as it is now, we can barely cross the street. we are talking about an incredible increase in volume. >> both cooper and farmers say the city supports them in their push for more housing but this lot is not owned by the city. they are urging the landowner to consider building housing. >> for whoever will hear, the power enhanced wants to know the community will support housing. we will supported through the process. liz: happening today in the north bay, a social justice public art piece is being dedicated and installed about

one market kicked off a four chef, four course offering. 5800 pg&e customers and 13 counties got their power shut off. the utility will possibly implement a public safety power shut off due to high winds. sonoma county and napa county are included. just 85 customers in napa and three in sonoma could be affected. pg&e meteorologists will continue to monitor conditions. we will keep you updated with any new information. lisa, we really need some rain because it is pretty windy out there and that is not so good for the fire danger. lisa: this is on the heels of a cold front moving through the bay area. that has brought some mist and drizzle to the coast. we are already seeing winds

gusting to over 20 miles per hour for oakland, san francisco. there is all the cloud cover. the precip is well to the east of us. lake tahoe reporting light rain last hour. with the cloud cover, there is not a lot of fog around the coast. visibility reduced a bit. half moon bay and the clouds down through pacifica, 61 in belmont. temperatures are milder due to the blanket of high and mid-level clouds. 58 in san rafael. anywhere from five to 14 degrees warmer to start out. those winds already cranking, gusting up to 30 miles per hour in oakland. hayward, over 20 miles per hour. upper elevations, 37 mile-per-hour wind gust in mount diablo and the north bay mountains. there is a look at the winds. continuing to blow and show the breeze right on the bay.

higher fire danger tomorrow as we get into a fire weather watch on the delta, solano county. today, it is along the san mateo coast. looking at san francisco, the wind gusts -- tomorrow, noon until 8:00, the north winds over 30 miles per hour, dropping relative humidity. when the fire started in. november, it was cool. you do not need to have the heat, it is the speed of the wind and the dry fuels. 30 to 40 mile-per-hour winds, briefly 50 in the afternoon. breezy to gusty out there. early sunday, winds still very breezy and that will keep temperatures from dropping too much tonight. by noon tomorrow, north and east bay hills, when we look at our fire weather index, the chance of igniting a fire kind of spreads from the north bay.

and the cloud cover. gusty winds around san francisco, oakland, 25 miles per hour. upper elevations, 20, 30 miles per hour. we are looking at the atmosphere drying up. inland in the 70's. offshore winds tomorrow. we will detail what that mean for your weekend, coming up. liz: growing concerns this morning about the number of children hospitalized across the country. hospitals in 43 states report a spike in hospitalizations for pediatric respiratory illness. karina mitchell reports with a warning from doctors. >> across the country, hospitals are again feeling that strain but it is now due to a surge in respiratory illnesses in children. hospital officials tell abc news they are facing a surge of rsv

and other common viruses. the age group most impacted according to the cdc is kids under five. he says three nearby hospitals were filled when she tried to get care for her son, who has asthma and was sick with rsv. >> i am panicking and crying. it is a scary feeling. you do not know what is happening in that moment. >> after an ambulance ride, she got him to cook children's hospital in fort worth, texas, where doctors are treating nearly 300 rsv patients a day. >> this is the highest volume of patients i have ever seen. >> symptoms include labored breathing, blue or discolored skin on the face signaling low oxygen and dehydration. she took her four-month-old daughter to the e.r. when she saw those signs. >> rapid breathing, her chest

the murders between the end of august and the end of september. he is barred from owning or buying a gun legally because he is a convicted drug offender. he is accused of six murders overall, including one in oakland. san jose officials have released details about how it plans to -- one ordinance requires gun owners have insurance coverage for their firearms. those in possession of a gun must have a current homeowners, renters or gun liability insurance policy. by january 1 fire of owners must keep proof of insurance wherever guns are stored or transported. the house select committee investigating the january 6 attack on the u.s. capitol has formally subpoenaed former president donald trump. he must turn over documents and appear for deposition under oath. lawmakers say key details about what the former president was doing and saying remain unknown.

40, to even 50 miles per hour briefly through the afternoon. 25, 35 mile per hour gusts. in the evening, the winds keeping the temperatures up. next week, much colder overnight. this is noontime sunday. north winds, 20 to 30 miles per hour. we have not seen the offshore wind component for a while. with that, bringing the risk of fire danger. as you get into the brighter colors, the risk increases from the north bay hills today. tonight, not too much of an issue. in the afternoon tomorrow, gusty north winds from the north and east bay posing a threat for the highest fire danger we have seen in quite some time. certainly, be careful. we will be watching it for you. cool number still indicating the very dry air. temperatures in the low 60's. half moon bay. 64 on the peninsula.

the accuweather 7 day forecast looking at 60's and 70's, breezy, high fire danger. north bay today, more so tomorrow is the winds shift. cooler mornings monday and tuesday. i think we strange clocks after that. liz: i have been waiting for that. it seems later than that, not until november. lisa: you are right. a 7:25 sunrise is pretty late. liz: that is. a move by bay area environmental groups is putting a spotlight on the toxic hazard in the delta. it is like the algae bloom we saw in san francisco bay. advocates say there are steps that can be done to fight the damage. mike: the destructive algae bloom that struck san francisco bay this summer has researchers looking at causes and solutions. several environmental groups are

demanding action on a similar challenge miles upstream from the bay. they are focused on a toxic bloom that has become almost a yearly appearance. >> it produces poisonous to people and their pets. mike: he is a senior scientist. the group captured the drone images of the bright green bloom. the exact causes are still being studied but the bay keeper and other groups have filed an emergency petition with the state water resources emergency control board. . it is asking the board to increase the seasonal flow of water to the delta from the san joaquin river to levels that were laid out four years ago and an amended plan. a move that study suggest would help fish and wildlife and potentially flush out microorganisms causing the bloom. >> if we have those operational by next of yuri and 40% of the

riverbed into the delta through june of next year, it is possible it could -- mike: the petition comes as state officials and the gavin newsom administration are wrestling over water allocations over residential, agricultural and other users. a pilot survey to monitor and better understand the bloom cycles and fill in the gaps in the data. they believe the flow issue is critical to an overall solution. >> it prevents water from being stagnant. if water is not stagnant, the water does not sit there and absorb heat energy. mike: bay keeper has filed a lawsuit questioning whether the 40% flow standard is even enough. in the meantime, they hope the process will at least spark movement toward increasing flows to that level. >> those could potentially be
