course there is always the concern as we get into the winter about a surge of a new variant of covid-19. reporter: hospitals in 43 states including california telling abc news they are grappling with an early influx of the flu, rsv, and other respiratory illnesses. an infectious disease expert says the lifting of covid restrictions is one of several possible reasons for the rise. >> many kids have had covid, recently actually, and when you have had recent covid that may make your immune system more reactive if it sees another respiratory infection. that is unproven, but a possible hypothesis that some people have proposed. reporter: the cdc is reporting that age group most impacted by flulike illnesses or children under five. children like this one-year-old

in texas, who spent nearly a week in the er. >> it has been emotional. sleep has been lacking. hearing the alarm so not go off. reporter: warning signs of respiratory illness include faster labored breathing, flared nostrils, blue or discovered skin on the face, signaling the oxygen, and dehydration such as dry mouth or a decrease in wet diapers. symptoms that lila's mom picked up on right away. >> she had been lethargic for more than 24 hours, and was showing lots of signs of dehydration. dion: in the east bay, the fire department shared dramatic video of a rescue last night in newark. fire fires responded to a car crash in valentine drive, and they found one person trapped inside an overturned car. they were able to successfully

buyback's art when it comes to stopping violent crime. the national bureau of economic research said fusing data from the national incident-based reporting system, we find no evidence that gun buyback programs reduce gun crime. >> at the end of the day, were not saying it will reduce all violent crime in santa rosa, but it may make that one difference in that one act of violence on the streets of santa rosa, and to me, that is a big win. reporter: 423 weapons were turned in, but the cash ran out and 100 people had to be turned away. dion: all of the guns collected today will be destroyed. over in the south bay, san jose is offering a financial incentive to a track experience police officers. the city is facing a shortage. the city council approved a hiring bonus of $10,000 for officers who come to san jose from another police department. it is allocated -- has allocated

$150,000 for the pilot program, enough or 15 officers. the shrinking police force has been the top issue in this year san jose mayoral race. in the north bay, a new piece of social justice art is now on display. take a look. this is the creation of the nonprofit youth in arts. it is called regeneration and is inspired by freedom of justice, and liberty. the three-panel design includes the names of those who have died by police violence, and has re-created something that was removed by the city, then they created it and spark confirmation while a man tried to wash it off or brandishing a gun. bay area residents took to the streets, protesting for the people of iraq. a march was held from united nations posit to bark darrell plaza in san francisco in

response to more than a month of violent clashes in iran between citizens and police. or than 140 iranians have been killed in those clashes. the conflict began after a 22-year-old woman died last month while in polshe was arresy improper wearing her hijab. we moved to a focus on education in our commitment to building a better bay area. the san francisco unified school district outputs enrollment season today. about 2000 families and kids under five years old came to a high school to learn more. representatives from the district 72 elementary schools answered parents questions. >> today, where having an enrollment fare for pre-k and kindergarten families, so all families of kids under five looking for school next year, we want them to come and look and check up the schools. dion: the community partners include the public library and parents for public schools.

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> more than 20 million americans have applied for relief as part of as an invited's student loan forgiveness plan, but there are legal challenges to the legislation playing out in court. em: a federal appeals court has granted the request from attorneys general of six republican-lead states to put a temporary hold on the biden administration's student loan debt forgiveness plan. the plan cancels up to $10,000 in student loan debt for individuals making less than 120 $5,000 a year or as much as $20,000 were eligible borrowers who are also pell grant recipients. >> as soon as i announce my of ministration's plan on student debt, they started attacking it, saying all kinds of things. their outrage is wrong, and it is hypocritical. >> president biden blasting republicans who have criticized his relief plan. >> i don't want to hear it from

sending the emails to users' span folders. according to the lawsuit, the rnc accuses google of discriminating because of political affiliations at a key time for election fundraising. the committee says the bias has been happening for 10 months. google has not commented on the lawsuit, but the company has previously denied criticism that span filters are biased against conservatives. one person is facing capital murder charges after a shooting that killed two employees at a dallas hospital. police arrived at the hospital this morning to find both victims near the labor and delivery area. one of the victims has been identified as a nurse. a hospital secured a guard confronted the suspect, then opened fire and wounded him. he was taken into custody a short time later. one woman who was just about to enter the hospital says her husband, who was already inside, worn her of what was happening. >> he was whispering, and he was like, turn around.

he said there's a shooter in the building. he said get back in your car and get as far away from the hospital as you can. >> gives you chills. the shooter has been identified as a 30-year-old man who was on parole for robbery. it is still unclear what led to the shooting. the ukrainian air force says it shot down more than half of the russian missiles fired at ukraine this morning. ukrainian president zelenskyy says energy facilities are the main targets of russia's latest attacks. karina: ukraine's air force says 33 missiles were fired at ukraine saturday morning but that 18 of them had been shot down. local officials across the country say the strikes have been aimed at energy facilities, which has caused power outages. more than one million people across ukraine are reportedly without power. ukrainian president zelenskyy in his nightly video address says russia has launched strikes on

is it getting to a point where farmers in the central valley are considering just leaving? >> people have walked away from those orchards already. next year, it is only going to get worse without rainfall. >> the state's department of water resources since the current drought now stands as the driest three-your stretch on record. part of building a better bay area includes recognizing those who fight for social justice. i had the honor to host the nonprofit asian-pacific islander legal outreach's 47th anniversary celebration friday night in san francisco. since 1975, the group has provided legal representation and social services to marginalized groups such as low income seniors and immigrants, and each year, they serve more than 3000 clients facing things from elder abuse to eviction, anti-asian hate to deportation and so much more.
