weather conditions means pg&e may shut off service for customers in more than a dozen counties including two here in the bay area. good evening, and thank you for joining us md on lim well happening right now a night of uncertainty for people in the north bay where the power could go out in an effort to prevent wildfires. here is the big threat. that is the wind. it brings with it the potential to knock down branches and trees right into live power lines. we do have live team coverage of both the threat of those outages and our weather conditions. let's begin with mike nico standing by and you have some optimistic potentially good news here the way i look at it. definitely dion i see things turning for the better a more positive spin that what's going to happen tonight as i think the winds are going to calm overnight. in fact the high pressure in the low pressure the pressure grading between those two that brought us the windy conditions the past two days that is going to relax overnight the winds right now. we're already starting to see them relax.
6:01 pm
they're still holding on amount diablo 28, but everybody else is even a few miles per hour lower than just an hour ago when we talked about this on the five o'clock news surface winds. well, they're little gusty along the coast as you would expect in around sfo and sam mateo, but they also look at inland concords at five now napa is at 12, santa rosa. and and this is what's going to happen during the overnight hours, see how they just kind of melt away, but they bring us clear conditions tonight and calm weather and bone dry air and that means it's gonna get really cold tonight dion in fact our coldest night so far this season, there's a frost advisory for parts of the bay area. i'll talk about that coming up. yeah, it's ready. there you go. like thanks. get you can see all of the areas under a public safety power shut off highlighted in this pg&e map. they're highlighted in yellow there now, you can see most of the areas are in northern california the warning covers nearly 2,000 customers down from 5800 just a few hours ago. that is the good news.
6:02 pm
the alert covers parts of napa and sonoma counties now speaking of abc 7 news reporter cornell. bernard is in the north bay tonight where he met up with a neighbor under one of those possible power outage warnings cornell. yeah, and still a waiting game for that neighbor dion and others waiting to see if their power will go out or stay on. no final word from pg&e yet and several hundred neighbors here in the north bay could be impacted by that. you know we get it going we have our extension cords, and then we kind of just run them through the house to the to the computer the tv in the fridge jenna mccormick has a generator ready to go in case the power goes out to her family's calistoga home. she's received alerts from pg&e and napa county about the possibility of a public safety powers shut off or psps due to rising wildfire risk. i thought they're gonna do it this morning. so we charge all the portable
6:03 pm
chargers and kind of went through all the checklists, but they haven't turned it off yet. it was a windy sunday in calistoga. pg&e says it's monitoring gusty conditions hour by hour ready to notify several hundred impact at customers if need be in touch with them to let them know we don't want to shut off their power. so we wait to the very last minute to give them a go or no-go because we don't want to de energizer lines. we know how going without power impacts our customers. so we do it as a tool of last resort. firefighters say a wind advisory has been an effect this weekend, but no red flag weather watch has been called regardless. we still want the community to be prepared. we're hopeful for rain in the near future. but right now when we're looking at these extended periods of dry conditions, the breezy conditions, really all it takes is is one one spark and we could end up with a another
6:04 pm
significant incident with just how dry things continue to get back in calistoga. jenna is watching the weather and hoping for the best power stays on i guess. yeah fingers crossed. thank you. now we just heard from pgd again. it says shut offs are still possible for parts of the north bay including northern and central california. meantime firefighters are urging folks not to barbecue or use outdoor fire pits until those winds have decreased. we're live in napa county tonight. i'm cornell bernard abc 7 news always a great reminder. okay cornell. thanks. and moving on to your voice and your vote and the november election the one and only debate in the race for california. governor was full of fireworks today governor gavin newsom and his republican challenger state senator. brian dolly went after each other on many issues the common theme the state's high cost of living. he is a caught driving up the cost of gasoline and electricity
6:05 pm
by the way, california has paid 70% higher electricity rates, and they do across the nation two and a half dollar a gallon higher gasoline than they do in nevada. you consistently have opposed including these rebate checks efforts to provide relief for gas and you've doubled down double down on the talking points of big oil. also on the topic of the state's fentanyl crisis things got heated. i would day one as governor. i would make fentanyl and state of emergency and tackle fennel some a state of emergency and then we're going to magically solve fentanyl. that's what my opponent just said somehow magically will disappear on the basis of a state of emergency that somehow he will adopt a secret strategy. both candidates had big plans for their next four years. we want to double down quadruple down and our energy policies our climate policies. we want to address the vaccine issues of extremes extreme doubt and drought extreme weather. if you want four more years of what you already been getting then stick with him if you want
6:06 pm
something different you can vote for me and we can have some change in california and you can have the ability to live the california dream. election day is tuesday, november 8th, and you can watch the gubernatorial debate on abc 7. there is a rebroadcast right now streaming on our website or on-demand through the abc 7 bay area connected tv app that app is available for download on apple tv and android tv, amazon fire tv and roku. a much more to come including side shows that kept police busy this weekend the two cities where officers responded and where in one case the driving was not the only danger they faced. also final sale an outpouring of customer support for an east bay bakery that is permanently closing after more than 90 years in business.

the same thing if you're not by a fire and have your latte or oh, yeah, we might need that tonight. it was nice to see that though. it really was colorado. they had enough snow received enough so their ski season started this week. oh my god. hopefully, we're not too far behind. yeah. we'll see how it goes. and as you mention it's gonna be cold tonight here at home frost. it's possible the air is going to be really dry, but freezing temperatures. yeah, those are possible but that is after look at this gorgeous day and half moon bay. yeah, i was a little breezy from time to time not quite as bad as it was yesterday. i'll tell you what if you're gonna be a half moon bay tomorrow if you have to work the weekend like dm and i are go tomorrow. it'll be almost as nice and it won't be windy whatsoever. all right. here's a look from mount tam and just that look gorgeous. in fact, you can see off in the distance some planes and some lights and some boats and just everything's starting to calm now that the sun is setting as compared to earlier when we had those gusty winds beautiful shot
6:17 pm
from emeryville. we use as the backdrop to talk about what to expect this seven day forecast. we're going to have clear calmer conditions tonight with that bone dry air out there. you may have noticed i'm gonna go get some of that lip balm after this it is a kind of dry and that is what's going to lead us to cool temperature tonight. i even turn the heater on for the first time breezy again, tuesday wednesday, but no we're nearly as fast as they were this weekend and there's some unsettle weather possibly in north bay a chance of showers at models are hinting that now this is how dry this this is the measure of moisture in the air no matter what the temperature is the dew point. so when you see something like 25 on a clear calm night, sometimes the temperature can drop down to the dew point, but this will actually climb a little bit as we head into the evening hours. but look at that 24 in hayward if you're throwing a scratchy maybe in livermore 23 and some wine with helped if you were living war but just gives you an idea of how dry it is. temperatures right now still holding on in the 60s of most areas. we have 57 and half moon bay and 70 holding on in napa 59 in los gatos. a shot and look how calm it is on the embarcadero here in san
6:18 pm
francisco because of that and once the sun sets here in just a few minutes. we're going to drop from the 50s and 60s all the way into the 50s by ten o'clock now if you have any sensitive or tender vegetation or plants make sure you cover them tonight before you go to bed keep the pets inside if you can and i don't know about the frosty windshields. it's gonna be close here so dry it'd be hard for that to happen. but temperatures could be below freezing for a couple of hours up in the north bay places like, you know, lake and midcino counties for six hours from three o'clock to nine o'clock and then elsewhere we're looking at eleven o'clock tonight through nine o'clock tomorrow all those areas in blue officially, i think temperatures will be close but 35 in santa rosa possibly 39 in livermore those 49 the asterisk. you see around san francisco and that 45 and that's those are possibly close to record low temperatures, believe it or not. all right, 73 to 75 in the south bay tomorrow just a little bit cooler 70 to 73 on the peninsula we'll have mid 60s, but remember calm. a whole lot of sunshine at the coast near 70 in downtown
6:19 pm
south san francisco and sausalito to mid 60s for the north bay coast, and then we've got around 74 to 77 through the north bay valleys head over to the east bay clean air. look at that green 70 at berkeley to about 73 at san leandro union city fremont and 75 to 77 in our east bay valleys. now, this is the high and low pressure that just continues that continues to go through the high and low, excuse me talking in my ear and for some reason that is going to be continue to pull away and then we'll see those breezy conditions tuesday and wednesday. now abc 7 sports with chris alvarez welcome to sports at levi's stadium and welcome to the christian mccaffrey era that is stanford man making his debut as a 49ers running back in the faithful. they love to see 23 in red and gold roll the highlights. here. he is in his brand new uniform the niners wearing the 94 throwbacks. so that looks good. kyle shanahan a new weapon on offense and mccaffrey his first

6:21 pm
quarter niners down 12 jimmy g to his friend is tied in george kittle on national tight ends day. how about that a touchdown for 85 niners within five but the chiefs run away with it. the homes had 400 yards passing and juju smith schuster breaks free niners fall 44-23 their records now three and four overall as for mccaffrey happy to be here but already eager to do more. know i expect to be prepared and you know, i'm sure my you know, my teammates and coaches expect me to be prepared to so you can't sit there and make excuses and say that you know, i haven't had a lot of time i gotta be ready to go back to work and i miss the stuff ain't easy they for everybody so we just gotta go back to work. i think we got the right guys for it. we really haven't played together as a team offense and yet and special teams. so we need to get clicking on all cylinders if we're gonna make around this here. very frustrating losing socks yes, it does. what a day though. it was here at levi's stadium.
