it's really close that seismic waves is going to arrive very soon with respect to our ability to identify that wave, but stein says new research is underway to advance that which we don't just use dysometers in the ground that are dedicated to earthquake early warning, but we can use everybody cell phone as another source of warning still stein says that warning will always be in the ballpark of 10 seconds a time frame allen and his team are working towards we live in earthquake country. we need to be ready for much larger earthquakes than this. and because of that the timeliness and accuracy of these alerts will become crucial as we face the next big quake and to put it in perspective for you going from a magnitude 5 quake to a magnitude 6 quake. the shaking is ten times stronger and with a magnitude 7 quake the shaking would be 100 times stronger than what we felt today. stephanie sierra abc 7 news steph, thank you. northern california is one of the most seismically active areas of the state experts. say the probability of a

field the only tool needed a smartphone. what can i tell how many steps i took how high, you know, this acclaimed government scientist has always been awed by science and recently he brainstormed away to modernize the teaching of physics harnessing the power of all the apps on students' favorite devices and creating a class called physics for phones. we're putting satellites up into space. we're building networks and all this is being done for commercial markets never before we've been in a position where we can use that investment to teach our youth thousands of teachers across the country and around the world are already downloading the 2500 pages, of course material from the lawrence livermore lab website putting physics for phones into action. we have this interval acceleration that we can measure off the phone and we measure the length of your arm. we can calculate exactly how fast your rotating. all right. we've got your phones. let's try it.
4:56 pm
i got. 60 ish these tools are just so powerful. almost every student has you know a phone and if they don't their friend does with school budget, it's tight. there's no need to buy equipment all. answers are already in the phones the kids at the poorest high school in the country now can now pull out their phones and do experiments that are better than what's going on at the most elite colleges in the country. it just makes it more accessible to them because it's an instrument that they're used to using all the time. it accelerates the learning of physics. sure. the response to physics for phones is spilling out of the classroom and into students' lives outside of school temperature acoustics other accelerations. it's pretty cool. so and i found myself using it just for fun. like driving a car or in an airplane. just see what the data is like just to tape it onto fast things and find that fast they go.

you'd like to see how fast yeah, yeah. what happens? the different acts axes the magnetic field out like changes. it was so cool to see how like technology that like, i didn't know. could measure so this new age physics class is simply taking the apps that already exist the phones that students already have and inspiring a new generation of scientists. we need people who are interested in going into the sciences because we've got a lot of problems in the world. need to take advantage of all of the intellectual capital that we have on the planet. i'm leslie brinkley abc 7 news. and the scientists who developed physics for phones says he believes it is the most significant project that he has worked on in his entire career. most likely coming to a school near you. all right, that's going to do it for this edition of abc 7 news at 4. i'm larry beale abc 7 news at five with dan and alma is coming
