worse, and n we d betn much greater risk. dan: thank you for joining us. yesterday's quake was the biggest in the bay area since the 2014 napa quake. now it increases the probability of other larger earthquakes. karina: could they be as bad as the 1989 on the san andreas fault? yesterday's quick was on the calaveras fault, and that had not had a major earthquake since 1984, when a magnitude 6.2 rocked the bay area, doing $10 million in damage. the calaveras fault is the most active in the bay area. dan: that is true. ryan curry looks at what this means for the rest of us. >> that is just where the haywood fault that we are located on an berkeley and the calaveras fault meet. ryan: he and his staff are

continuing to examine tuesday's 5.1 earthquake. >> it is a strike slip fault, meaning it is pretty much version. ryan: the calaveras fault sees the most earthquakes in the bay area. >> it is kind of patchy and we think that because only smaller parts of the fault are completely stuck. surrounding patches go slowly. ryan: he says that sometimes these two moderate earthquakes like the one tuesday. >> shaking his pretty low. when the shear waves arrived, this is a shearing motion part of the shaking. ryan: going forward he says his team is looking at the long-term impacts. he says the earthquake alleviates pressure around the epicenter but increases pressure and other parts of the fault. and since this occurred where the front lines meet, he says it

increases the chances of larger earthquakes on other parts of both lines. >> in the surrounding areas that increases the stress. it is loading up the surrounding patches. so how ready are those, and how big of an earthquake might we still produce from that? ryan: he says the chances of a big one happening on those fault lines are greater within one week. >> for the next week or so probabilities are higher. in that sense if you are worried about an earthquake, after a week or so you might breathe a little more easily. dan: so, could be an interesting week. living here, we know it is not a question of if, but when the big earthquake hits. yesterday is a good reminder we should all be prepared. zach point us joins us live where santa clara officials are urging everyone to have a plan

in place. zach: the office of emergency services says as far as yesterday's quick when everything went just as they would hoped it would go prude no injuries, no major damage. now they are hoping yesterday's quake will be a reminder to everyone that a larger and more devastating earthquake could come at any moment and for everyone to remember the simple steps that could be lifesaving. longtime bay area residents still remember some of the largest earthquakes we have seen. >> 1989. i was driving down central expressway and i felt my tire coming off. all these cars were pulled over and the road -- zach: despite those vivid memories, in the hours after tuesday's earthquake, many admitted they are still not as prepared as they should be. >> i am definitely not. i have to go home and reevaluate my water stash. >> i have enough water but that

yesterday we arrested four of the five suspects responsible for that robbery. karina: three of those arrested were juveniles. police say one of them was wearing and ankle monitor. police credit the use of automated license plate readers in this case. the suspect vehicle was seen in another part of the city. today, police released a photo of the only suspect they have not caught yet. they hope the public. -- public can help find him. dan: -- led to an arrest in san francisco. indiana state police say the body was found in april and southern indiana field. earlier this month arrest warrants were issued for two people. seven days ago, -- the search continues for the second suspect, the child's mother. her last location was los

live, posshelp locing her. us locate her so justice can be served. dan: investigators say his death was connected to an electrolyte imbalance caused by intestinal infection. karina: berkeley police are asking drivers to avoid a stretch of bancroft way after a train crash. a freight train hit a truck near there this afternoon. no injuries were reported. the crash impacted all trains and caused delays. dan: redwood city is imposing a temporary moratorium on the. sale of guns and ammunition. keep in mind there is not a single -- the moratorium came about because of heightened community concern. city staff conduct research about potential regulations for gun stores. the moratorium will be in place for up to 45 days and could be extended. karina: your voice, your vote.

can be closed. we are seeing no to black and brown families being pushed out of the city. anser: measure v would expand eviction protection to another 14,000 people. >> i fought the eviction and i won that case, but just cause needs to happen. landlords need to be held accountable. >> any measure of this type will likely result in a decrease in housing supply by having people decide not to engage in the rental of their available units. anser: managing partner at borenstein law, which specializes in tenant landlord relationships. he is against measure v. he says the way the law is written, it could be difficult for landlords to get tenants to leave even after their lease is over. >> if some and wants to rent for a year and wants to reoccupy it, it becomes very difficult to do so under the new potential statute.

treat for any events planned. parades, trick-or-treating next week between tuesday night and wednesday. slight chance of a few showers. dan: we would love a few showers. sandhya: something would be nice. karina: we are getting images back from what could be a power firm -- powerful new tool in the fight against climate change. it is the work of nasa's jet propulsion lab in pasadena. it identifies dangerous pollutants, but is deployed in space. mike nicco has a look. reporter: for decades, the international space station hazards -- has expanded scientific research beyond the earth's atmosphere. now, they are zeroing in on a major threat to the planet itself, the release of dangerous greenhouse gases. specifically, methane. >> it was not designed to look at methane. we knew it could have potential.

reporter: it's powered by a sophisticated spectrometer developed by nasa jpl in pasadena. the device was launched and installed on the space station earlier this year. by essentially measuring reflected light, it can identify the fingerprint of substances like methane in the atmosphere. but researchers were surprised when it began returning plumes from so-called super emitters, like those captured above a landfill in iran. and another over oil-rich turkmenistan. >> when i saw these oil plumes, and the beauty at which we were able to receive them, it exceeded all my expectations. i thought we would have maybe just at the center but we are seeing 20 mile long plumes. reporter: one reason for the excitement is that its core mission is to image dustin elements that might influence climate change. but over the last decade,

researchers in california have helped pioneer the use of airborne spectrometers to monitor methane releases from sites ranging from utilities, to landfills, to wastewater treatment plants. last year, abc 7 profiled the special aircraft and nasa jpl-designed equipment were being used across the state. but dr. green says the emit technology is many more times sophisticated and could now offer the potential of monitoring and pinpointing greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale. >> and hopefully policymakers can say, ok, here's some methane sources we did not know about. are there ways we can mitigate it? reporter: potentially providing the international community with a powerful new tool to fight climate change. karina: and nasa says its core mission is also a success, providing images of dust from the earth's surface that could be having an effect on climate change.

dan: it is a vacant slice of real estate in the heart of a vibrant neighborhood, and with ownership a mystery, neighbors are doing development themselves. this could be best described perhaps as a grassroots effort to build a better bay area. karina: some residents decided to bust into the lot and put in a garden. not everyone is buying into the idea. luz pena has the story. luz: parcel 36 is what they call this lot. it cuts diagonal to 23rd and treat avenue. a big enough space to create controversy. what would you say if i told you that there is no known owner of this space? >> i would say that the city should give it to the mission residents to let us figure out a way to use it. >> it seems really silly that it

just sitting with no owner. luz: but to understand how we got to this dilemma of who owns this lot and who put up the fence, we spoke to this mission resident, part of the group mission greenway. they have a vision for the space. >> what we would like to see is a greenway in common with jury comments community park. we would like for it to include some aspects of urban agriculture. luz: she says the fence was put up in the 1980's and one of the property owners in the area has the key to the lock. she says her group tried for 10 opyele involved, but this weekend they got fed up and broke the lock to begin a community garden. >> what we saw was people simply parking on it, and what we thought was there is room to share. luz: so what happened this weekend you said that is it? >> after 10 years of trying. luz: who owns it? according to the san francisco real estate department, the last

rally ended as the closing bell sounded today. disappointing third-quarter earnings from alphabet led a 2% drop on the nasdaq. the parent company of google lost 9% today. the dow ticked up a little with a two point gain. we will see third-quarter earnings from more big players tomorrow. karina: abc 7 celebrates pride 365 days a year, and this month it is lgbtq plus history month. today we take a look back at a nightlife hotspot for generations. zach fuentes tells us long before rupaul's drag race, there was pinocchio's in san francisco. zach: at the corner of broadway and kearny in san francisco's north beach neighborhood, there are few signs of the former pinocchio's nightclub.

♪ for 63 years, it was the place to see what we now call drag. >> drag what mainstream. this is where you came to see drag queens and fabulous female impersonators. we found jugglers and ventriloquist and belly dancers. all kinds of zaniness. zach: it dubbed itself as america's most unusual nightclub, until it closed in 1999. it started as a speakeasy during prohibition. >> there was a stage in the back, and there were comedians, singers, and ventriloquist. zach: eric started working there when he was 12. his grandparents started the club. >> there was a fella who came up and did an impersonation of

sophie tucker. she was a very famous comedic singer at the time. the crowd in the bar went crazy for it. little by little, the show kind of grew to being too. crowded for their location. . zach: in 1936, they moved to broadway, the heart of the city's nightlife. >> get is great to bring your out-of-town friends for a little shock value. it was a good, clean shall. for approximately one hour and 20 minutes you could get drinks and enjoy the show. zach: the club packed in the crowd for decades. a trip was not complete without a visit. the shows were so popular, tour buses regularly drop people off at their doorstep. the entertainers were occasional guests on late-night talk shows because of the then-risque nature of their routines. >> is this something you do when

you go to the office? >> we work at the club. this one i go to the club. >> it was kind of shocking to see this beautiful woman up on stage that you are looking at is not a woman, it is a man dressed as a woman. but gosh darn, that's a woman in my eyes. zach: it was popular with sailors visiting san francisco during world war ii. it's all the summer of love, the vietnam war, and the aids crisi all come and go. >> performers for the most part were gay. several of them were married, and wives, but i think they may have been bisexual as well. a lot of the waitstaff was gay. zach: by the end of the last century, drag performances had grown in popularity. the old shows created nearly seven decades earlier were no longer popular. his widow decided it was time to close in 1999. >> i think i sort of took it for

granted. when i left my dressing room i shut the door and i walked out and i did not really think about it for quite a while. now i realize how in-store oracle -- how historical the space is. zach: they donated -- for much of its existence, performers had to be careful. the city enacted a cross-dressing law in 1863 and was not repealed until 1974, meaning anyone leaving the club dressed as a woman could be arrested for indecency. >> if they stepped outside either the entertainment space, that would be considered public cross-dressing was criminal. they could exist in the spotlight, but they were criminalized outside the spotlight. zach: this historian and filmmaker -- she says the history of the club includes trans women as well. among boxes of ephemera are

clues about the lives of performers. >> that really did not start until the late 1950's, early 1960's. and as the decades go on, into the 70's through the 1990's, a lot of performers at that time were people we might call trans women. >> we were not drag queens, we were female impersonators. we would like male actresses. >> some of those people were straightme wer they all had a talent for so-called female impersonation. >> i think we gave people who did that entertainment artistry a place that was safe for them to be able to show their art, a nd showcase their talents. we had a great run. >> it's an important part of our history. really important part of our history that i think it's lost. quite honestly, if it were not for finocchio's, i am not sure
