surveillance video, officers with the california highway patrol are looking for this white suv, one they say struck a child tuesday evening in castro valley, then drove off. >> it is never ok to leave the scene of a crash, especially a six-year-old in the middle of the street injured. it is appalling. reporter: officer say the vehicle hit a six-year-old. witnesses say that boy and his older brother had gone into this karate school but came back out. >> i do not know if the kid forgot something in the car. he ran out and when he ran out, the car was coming fast. he hit the kid. my wife was looking inside, she heard the noise and was looking back. she saw the kid on the ground. reporter: all of that happened in a close proximity. you can see the karate studio here. >> the parent was close by

directly across the street. the juvenile was crossing the street back toward the parent side when he was struck by the vehicle. reporter: the boy was taken to the hospital with severe injuries but his condition has improved. he was released from the hospital wednesday afternoon. the focus is on catching the driver of this white suv, one who detectives say will face a felony hit and run charge if and when they are caught. >> it is wrong. if you hit somebody, you have to stop. you have to follow the law. especially when it is a kid. reporter: abc 7 news. ama: the chp is asking for any information you may have on the crash. you can call this number on the screen. dan: our growing shortage of bus drivers is causing an issue

nationwide a city struggle to provide safe and reliable public transportation. it is an issue felt here in the bay area. we found out what is driving the shortage and how transit agencies are hoping to get more people behind the wheel. reporter: the wheels on the bus go round and round but increasingly there are fewer people available to drive the buses. >> we did not prepare ourselves well. reporter: it was a main topic of discussion at the transit meeting. board members call it a bus operator crisis. transit agencies are down 200,000 drivers, although that number is higher due to the effects of the pandemic. alterable factors are causing the shortage. >> transit jobs are concentrated in cities and those wages are not enough for operators to live in the service areas they are driving in. reporter: on top of worries

about salary, safety concerns are top of mind. the average worker in the industry tends to be older than most other fields. >> operators are more likely to suffer from diabetes or high blood pressure. and having a job where you cannot properly use the bathroom makes it worse. reporter: transportation experts urge governments to take action quickly. some things they recommend, offer competitive wages and improving employee facilities, and ensuring safety for everyone on board. in san francisco, they say they can get behind this. >> the first day i got on the bus, i had people going at it. people were yelling at each other and upset. it was a welcome back to commuting. reporter: abc 7 news.

ama: an influx of cash is coming to help people into stable housing. the state is giving san francisco $11 million to help 345 people. oakland is getting more than $3.5 million to serve 50 people. that is more than $60,000 per person. eight areas across california are receiving the funds. dan: oakland is dropping its ordinance requiring face masks for indoor gatherings. this change goes into effect october 1. people have to wear face masks inside government facilities. ama: the covid-19 virus is constantly evolving with new subvariants. covid infection symptoms are changing as well. the survey was a partnership between stanford and the university of london. participants reported the top

five covid symptoms after two vaccinations. persistent cough, headaches, runny nose, sore throat. symptoms such as loss of smell rank down on the list. dan: let's move to developing news, elon musk's looming takeover of twitter is sinking in. musk is sending borrowing notices to banks, kicking off a process to complete his $40 billion deal after visiting the san francisco headquarters today. he did not show up empty-handed. reporter: entering twitter headquarters, let that sink in. a tweet posted by elon musk, seen with tan actual sink. >> it is par for the course for whoever this character elon musk is today.

dan: the investigation into the death of a five euro boy whose body was found in a suitcase has led to an arrest in san francisco. indiana state police say the body was found in april in a southern indiana field.
