wakanda forever," but there's a lot of excitement for the movie and the premiere. the cast, they're honoring chadwick boseman. angela bassett said this about the movie, quote, you'll feel our hearts and our love for him. we have much more coming up in the show. also ahead, the threat of another rail strike looming. what it could mean for the nation's supply chain with the holidays around the corner. but we're going to begin with the economy. new numbers out this morning will help gauge where things are and where we might be headed. our chief economics correspondent rebecca jarvis is outside the new york stock exchange with what we can expect. good morning, rebecca. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. you can think of this report, as the broadest snapshot of our economic health. after shrinking for the first two quarters of this year, gdp g grew, mostly due to the jobs

market. consumers continue to spend, albeit at a slower pace, and overall the economy is moving forward. there are areas of weakness, one being the housing masht. we've seen a slow down in the recent months because the fed is hiking interest rates, making mortgages more expensive and making it harder for people to afford to buy homes. robin? >> so what does this mean for the possibility of a recession moving forward? >> reporter: well, on the one hand, americans are still spending. they're the engine of growth for the u.s. economy. most analysts believe there will be a tipping peooint and people will pull back because of prices and interest rates, and that businesses will stop spending too. companies have said they're

seeing weaknesses in the various markets. economists are still forecasting a recession, but they expect it to be short and mild. rbin? >> not all recessions are alike. rebecca, thank you for that. george? we go to politics, and with the final midterm votes just 12 days away, herschel walker is facing a new abortion allegation in the battleground key state of georgia. congressional correspondent rachel scott is tracking the race. good morning, rachel. >> george, good morning. i can tell you this is hardly what herschel walker wants to be talking about so close to election day. his campaign rocked by controversy yet again, this time from a second woman. she says even though walker claims to oppose abortion, he paid for her to have one. republican senate candidate herschel walker is a staunch opponent of abortion, but a second woman has now come forward claiming he also paid for her to have an abortion. the woman is remaining anonymous because she says she fears retaliation. >> herschel walker says he is against women having abortions, but he pressured me to have one. >> reporter: during a news

conference held by her attorney, gloria allred, she said on speakerphone she and walker were in a relationship when she became pregnant in 1993. te woman, whose claims have not been verified by abc news, says the former football star gave her the money to have an abortion. she says she traveled to a clinic in dallas but couldn't go through with it. she says walker was upset and drove her back to the clinic the next day, allegedly waiting outside for hours while she got the procedure. the woman and her lawyer released a voicemail, photo, receipt and card, saying it's evidence of her relationship with walker, but did not provide evidence of the abortion itself. walker strongly denying it all. >> i'm done with this foolishness. >> reporter: earlier this month, the mother of one of his children, said walker paid for her to have an abortion. walker denied that allegation in an interview with abc's linsey davis. >> did you ever to your knowledge give money to pay for the cost of an abortion? >> no. >> is she lying? >> yes, she's lying. >> reporter: the first woman

provided multi-nple news outlet receipts from the abortion clinic and a copy of a $700 check she says walker gave her for the abortion. walker acknowledged giving her the check but said it was not for an abortion. walker is locked in a tight race with democratic senator raphael warnock. in a statement his campaign says he has a problem with taking responsibility for his actions, but even with all this versy, ta dead heat. >> in pennsylvania, both john fetterman and dr. oz return to the campaign trail yesterday after the debate on tuesday night. fetterman admitted that the debate was not easy for him. >> to be honest, doing that debate wasn't exactly easy. i may not get every, every word the right way, but i will always do the right thing in washington, d.c. [ cheers and applause ] >> rachel, democrats increasingly worried about the race. >> yes, they are. his campaign tried to lower expectations before the debate but both campaigns felt like their candidates did what they needed to do on the stage. look, this is still a very close race. we're told plans are coming together for president biden to

travel back to the state and former president donald trump will be there too right before election day. george? >> rachel scott, thanks very much. michael? >> george, thank you. now to new details on the deadly high school shooting in st. louis. police say the gunman's family is cooperating and had tried to get him help. alex perez is in st. louis with more. good morning, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, michael. we now know from authorities that the shooter legally owned that ar-15 rifle until about two weeks ago when his family called police to have it removed from their home. this morning, authorities in st. louis say the suspected gunman behind monday's deadly shooting targeted his former school, killing 15-year-old sophomore alexandria bell and health teacher jean kuczka at central visual and performing arts high school. police finding a chilling handwritten note orlando harris left in his car, the 19-year-old writing he felt isolated and disconnected from the school community. the gunman's family police say

had him committed several times to a psychiatric facility monitored his mail and on october 15th they notified police he had a gun and had it removed from their home. >> they contacted us, said he had a firearm. i believe it could have possibly been this gun. the officers in their response handed it over to somebody else, an adult who was lawfully able to possess it. >> reporter: that same gun, this ar-15 style rifle investigators believe somehow got back in his hands to unleash the attack monday. >> the family's fully cooperative. they're also heartbroken over this incident and did everything they possibly could have done but sometimes that's not enough. >> reporter: authorities say school doors were locked and there were seven security officers at the school when the gunman arrived. they won't specify how he got in, but they say he somehow forced his way into the building. a nearby construction crew lending arriving officers tools to break open locked doors and

quickly confront the shooter. >> it's the police. it's okay. >> reporter: and pull those students to safety. >> everybody line up in a single file line, okay? >> reporter: and federal and local authorities are now working to figure out how that gun got from the person who was supposed to be safeguarding it back into the shooter's hands. robin? >> many want to know that. alex, thank you. now to the war in ukraine and vladimir putin doubling down on his claim that ukraine plans to use a dirty bomb which many fear could be an excuse for russia to increase attacks perhaps using nuclear weapons. tom soufi burridge is in ukraine and, tom, we are now seeing new threats that russia could possibly target u.s. satellites? >> reporter: good morning, robin. yeah, news in, a senior official in moscow warning that u.s. satellites in space could become legitimate targets for russia if the u.s. becomes directly involved in the war here in ukraine. and real concern now that vladimir putin himself has joined the chorus of russian voices making an unsubstantiated and ominous claim that ukraine is preparing to detonate a

missile laced with radioactive material known as a dirty bomb. overnight the white house saying this is a typical play by the kremlin. they create a pretext by forewarning that ukraine is about to do something when the russians then carry out it themselves. u.s. officials warning moscow that could be consequences and putin overseeing russia's first large-scale nuclear drills since its invasion of ukraine simulating a major nuclear attack. and this morning dramatic video circulating online showing the aftermath of an attack by ukrainian forces on a railway fuel depot in eastern ukraine as russia is ramping up its rhetoric as forces are very much on the back foot in this war. george? >> tom, thanks very much. now to the surging admissions at children's hospitals. 75% of pediatric beds are filled and in some states like texas they're at 90%.

whit johnson reporting from houston. good morning, whit. >> reporter: george, good morning. texas children's hospital here is the largest of its kind in the u.s. right now they are treating dozens of children, part of an early season surge of multiple respiratory viruses all hitting at once and like many hospitals across the country, they are bracing for more. this morning, hospitals warning they're being stretched to pediatricays a perfect academy storm of viruses is taking hold. >> what we are seeing right now is all of these respiratory illnesses hitting at once at a time where many pediatric emergency departments and community emergency departments were already dealing with fewer available beds and it's combining to create a perfect storm. >>reporter: pediatric hospital bed occupancy now the highest it's been in two years as a wave of respiratory viruses hits children hard like the flu and rsv. pediatric hospital beds in nine states and washington, d.c. already above 80% capacity. five states including texas at 90%. children's health in dallas

saying this past week they had 313 patients with rsv compared to 2021 when they had 76. utah mom sara miller says when her baby was diagnosed, her symptoms worsened at an alarming rate. >> in probably the course of like two hours she had gone from like being our normal baby to she was on a respirator. >> reporter: the aap says watch out for these signs, fast or short breaths, grunting noises, chest caving in when breathing and a change in skin color due to lack of oxygen. that's when parents should contact their doctors immediately. >> if you need us, we will be there to care for your children. >> reporter: doctors say children under the age of 5 are often the most vulnerable because of their smaller airways and are urging parents to keep their kids up to date on vaccines like covid and the flu and emphasize the importance of personal hygiene. michael? >> very important, whit. thank you so much. now to president biden trying to address americans' frustrations about the economy.

the president planned to reduce or eliminate so-called junk fees charged by banks he says violate the law. our chief white house correspondent cecilia vega is in washington with more. cecilia, this is just 12 days before the midterms. >> reporter: you hit the nail on the head there, michael. you're exactly right. the president knows that voters are heading to polls with the economy, inflation, their pocketbooks top of mind as they head into the midterms so this is why he's highlighting junk fees. what we're talking about is essentially overdraft and check fees charged by banks. these bad checks are happening less frequently. we know this because of the type of world we live in. people are writing fewer paper checks, but banks have charged fees up to $19. the consumer financial protection bureau calls them unfair and give examples like say you're cashing a check someone wrote you and it bounces. the person who wrote that bad check doesn't get charged, but you do. then on overdraft fees banks have charged fees even though a customer's account shows a positive balance when they

withdrew the money but some of the fees have been charged as high as $36 there so the administration is issuing these new guidelines making it illegal to keep charging these types of fees, robin, this is the thing here, the administration says these fees primarily hurt lower income individuals, people of color in this country and these changes could ultimately save people collectively $3 billion a year so a lot of money we're talking about here. >> yes, indeed. all right, cecilia, thank you. now to another possible rail strike. the threat rising as a second union rejects a white house brokered labor deal. andrew dymburt is at penn station with the big picture. what it could mean for the nation's supply chain. good morning, andrew. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the threat of a rail strike now looms large once again. this after a second railroad workers union rejected a labor deal. this latest union to reject a deal represents thousands of rail workers and the issue seems to be paid time off. terms of a deal to avoid a shutdown were reached in september but with rank and file

union members voting it down it is back to the bargaining table. workers could strike and hit the picket line as early as november 19th. make no mistake about it, this would be a big blow to the biden administration, a strike could cripple the u.s. supply chain and further inflame inflation. it's easy to see why. by some estimates, it could cost the u.s. economy $2 billion a day. that's because nearly a third of all u.s. exports still move by freight train. michael. >> that is a big blow, andrew, thank you. going to turn to elon musk. his deal to buy twitter appears to be on track and the tesla mogul visited twitter headquarters amid concerns about what might happen if he does take over. will reeve has more. good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, michael. so elon musk brought a prop to work to make a pun and a point. musk tweeting video of his walk into twitter headquarters in san francisco carrying a sink writing, entering twitter hq,

let that sink in. the reality musk will go ahead is certainly sinking in for everyone concerned. bloomberg reporting he will close that $44 billion deal by tomorrow, which would end months of drama that began with the blockbuster offer with musk trying to renege, and then twitter suing him to keep his word and a judge delaying that trial and setting that friday deadline. there are concerns about what musk will do with twitter if he takes over. there are reports there could be massive layoffs, but bloomberg reporting musk told staffers on wednesday he does not plan to cut 75% of the staff, though cuts are still expected. users and media watchdogs also worried twitter could become even more of a free for all as musk himself calls himself a free speech absolutist and promises to loosen rules about what can be said on the site and reversing bans on such former users including former president trump. guys? >> okay, will, thanks very much. coming up our abc news exclusive, matthew perry, the "friends" star one-on-one with diane sawyer and his hard fought

6,000 aa meetings, therapy 30 years, 15 rehabs. >> yeah. >> maybe at least. half of your life in treatment or in sober living houses. >> reporter: he has been in detox he estimates 65 times, survived 14 surgeries after a nearly fatal emergency three years ago. >> they ran me into the emergency trauma room and it was in there that my colon exploded. i was put on an ecmo machine. an ecmo machine, when you talk to any doctor, is a hail mary. it is the last thing that you do before people die and there were five people that night that were put on ecmo machines and i was the only one who survived. >> reporter: he was in a coma for 14 days. as he heals from all he's been through, there's still wear and tear on his voice and speech and the scars on his body like a

warrior back from battle. >> i was in that hospital for five months and, you know, escaped death really narrowly. >> reporter: perry says he's proof that addiction can enter any home, any heart. if you try to map the fault lines underneath an addiction, you often find unanswerable questions. perry says he does remember the day he thought he had found an answer. he's 14 with his canadian pals and a common teenage rite of passage. >> i had never drank before and i was just sort of -- drank this entire bottle of what was called anwar's baby duck. that was the name of the wine and i lay in the grass and just was in -- was in heaven and i thought to myself, this must be the way that normal people feel all the time, and i thought that at 14. >> reporter: his friends could drink and stop.

but for him the relief was so easy it became his destination. >> but, you know, by the time i was 18, i was drinking -- i was drinking every day. >> reporter: it's a pattern he continues, even after landing a starring role in a show that was then called "friends like us." he hopes fame will fill up the hole inside, but it doesn't. >> and that was a dark day for me when i realized that it did not do that, that it did not fix what i thought was -- what i knew was broken. >> reporter: and now the added fear of being on a high-wire with about 25 million people watching. he says his terror deepens, so does his loneliness and shame. >> alone so i could drink, drinking, therefore, alone. i would drink. watch the movie. pass out. wake up. drink. watch the movie. pass out. > but you had no trouble with the lines. you had no trouble with the timing. you had no trouble showing up

season, a warning about shipping scams using text messages. trevor ault is here with the details. good morning, trevor. >> good morning, george. we really want to let people know about this ahead of the holiday shopping season. really people are receiving packages all the time and she's scam texts can be really convincing. they're disguised to look like they're coming from a shipping company or maybe from the postal service and they're trying to let you know that you missed a delivery. we have a few real examples here from u.p.s. of what these texts look like. one here says it's from u.p.s., it's got dates and times to look official. it says sorry we missed you. we tried to deliver your parcel today. it's got that link that even has u.p.s. in the url. then this one right here actually has a tracking number and say this link is where you can reschedule your parcel to get delivered and the scammer's goal is to get you to click on that link and give away personal information, home address, maybe even credit card. sometimes they'll try to get you to give them money directly and pay something like a redirecting fee and if you're not careful this is easy to fall for. >> what are the things people should look for?

♪ nice shot of times square here in new york city and welcome back to "gma." we'll turn to our "gma" cover story. our series cracking the kid code we're highlighting teens and gambling, a growing issue since 2018 when the supreme court struck down the federal ban on sports betting. now about 31 states and washington, d.c. have legalized it and our juju chang has more. good morning, juju. >> reporter: good morning, you know, online gambling in th world. according to a recent report, nearly 3,000 internet sites exist and growing. we've been following one teenager battling a gambling

addiction. he spoke to us in shadow with his voice altered and wound up thousands of dollars in debt but it wasn't just the financial damage, he says underage gambling left his young life in shambles. online gambling is popping up everywhere with kids and teens enticed by the risks and the rewards. >> if you have a phone on you and you have connection to the internet, you can gamble whenever you want. >> reporter: steve is an 18-year-old speaking candidly to "gma" about his gambling addiction which began at age 15. he's asked to be it shadow to use a different name and alter his voice to hide his identity. >> all it took was playing dice. from there it just kind of grew. >> how much did you win? >> a couple hundred dollars. >> that was your first hit. >> that was like the first high. >> reporter: steve says from there the desire to gamble intensified. his sports obsession morphing into an illegal sports betting obsession. making bets not just on wins and losses but putting money on every inning or every basket. >> it's not about just watching the sports game. it's more about watching for the money.

>> reporter: the legal age for gambling in the u.s. is 18 or 21 depending on the state and the type of game. but experts warn that early exposure can lead to gambling addiction. >> teenagers and young people are significantly at higher risk of developing gambling disorders than adults. in part because their brains are not fully developed. their ability to evaluate risk, their ability to handle loss isn't as secure as an adult. >> reporter: steve says he was able to access legal sports betting sites by using other people's accounts who were of age to illegally gamble. he also used unregulated offshore illegal websites. >> our culture is seeing young adults raised in a society where gambling is the norm and people don't think of it as risky anymore. >> reporter: for steve, gambling became a full-time job, placing bets during school and staying up all night. >> i kind of used gambling as an escape. >> reporter: and he says he began lying and stealing money to pay back debts. >> it affected my relationship

with my family, with some of my closest friends. there were days where i was kind of just sleepwalking. >> reporter: his father who we're calling martin also asked to have his voice altered. he said at first he and his wife failed to fully grasp how destructive his son's gambling addiction had become. >> what did you miss along the way? what do other parents miss? >> how quickly it became an obsession. >> reporter: with his family's support steve has joined a 12-step program gone to rehab and is now in recovery. >> what do parents need to know? >> advertisements, all the commercials like they really make it seem like it's a good thing. i've never seen a commercial talking about the downsides of it. >> how many parents out there do you think are aware of that their teenage boys are -- have a gambling problem? >> not as many as there are. >> reporter: we reached out to the american gaming association who told us the u.s. gaming industry invests hundreds of
