witnessed mr. pelosi in a struggle with the attacker, both men wrestling over a hammer. officers tackled the suspect. larry: mr. pelosi has undergone several surgeries at san francisco general hospital. speaker pelosi is in san francisco right now after arriving from washington, d.c. dion: we have team coverage at the hospital where paul pelosi is recovering, outside of nancy pelosi's home. larry: let's begin with stephanie with what she has learned. stephanie: it is clear this was a targeted attack, intended to harm speaker pelosi. sources confirm the suspect threatened her husband before yelling repeatedly, "where is nancy" several times then violently attacked him with a hammer. we're told paul has undergone surgery to repair his skull and

is currently still recovering at the hospital. a violent attack unfolding at speaker nancy's pacific heights home. investigators responded to calls for a well-being check and found pelosi's husband paul fighting off an intruder with a hammer. police chief vilsack says the intruder is a 42-year-old resident who was arrested shortly after officers arrived on scene. forces close to abc 7 news say he confronted paul after breaking into a door on the side of the home, yelling for nancy's whereabouts before violently assaulting him with a hammer. paul was immediately transported to san francisco general where he underwent surgery to his head to repair a skull fracture and severe injuries to his right arm and hand. >> we were just horrified that such a thing could happen. x just horrible.
4:03 pm
it is just horrible. it is just horrific. >> investigators say a motive for the attack is still being determined, but many believe it was a targeted attack against the speaker. >> of course it was a targeted attack. it's what they wanted to do on january 6, attack the capitol specifically to kill pelosi. >> it is exactly what the insurrectionists were saying on january 6. "nancy, where are y? nancy?" this man broke into a home and that's what he was saying. i cannot believe this is my country. >> speaker pelosi is the highest ranking member of congress, a position that is provided a

full-time capitol police detail. while the speaker was away at the time of the attack, it is still unclear why there was not more security present at the home. >> we are working closely with our partners in fbi, the u.s. attorney's office, the u.s. capitol police, and our district attorney. >> we will proceed with the appropriate chargers. -- charges. >> pray for her family and pray for our country and our democracy because each one of these act really diminishes all of us. so -- stephanie: we know the suspect was booked on attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary, and several other additional charges. the police office confirm paul pelosi is still recovering at s.f. general, and while the injuries are significant, his team of doctors expect him to make a recovery. aut

exactly what happelice we ll. paul pelosi actually helped save himself. >> somehow, he gets on his cell phone and dials 911 surreptitiously and leaves that line open, maybe in his pocket, maybe on the table, but at that point, an emergency dispatcher at san francisco police -- this happens all the time, you got a call, there's no voice on the other and, and sometimes you disconnect, but she is sensing something. there's a conversation going on in the background. she is sensing something is not right, so she listens in, turns up the volume, and paul pelosi is basically trying to tell her in code what is going on. "why are you here? what are you going to do to m e?" you can imagine he is trying to not let the attacker know 911 is
4:06 pm
on the call. pelosi apparently is still trying to keep this down by playing off, you know, as the police come in what is going on, and he goes to grab the hammer, and our 6'2", 250-pound assailant hits him in the head as the officers are crossing the room. th susctnto cusdy.able to here's exactly what we know about him -- he is a native of british columbia but has been a california resident for the last 20 years. friends say he had been living in a storage shed in berkeley. his digital footprint reveals posts about anti-vaccination theories. he also shared several videos that falsely allege the 2020 election was stolen. larry: dozens of law enforcement officers have been to the pelosi house including the bomb squad. they did not find anything,
4:07 pm
though. lyanne: this morning, the pelosi home became one of san francisco's main attractions for locals and tourists after word quickly spread that the speaker's had been attacked inside their home. investigators searched to thet'o present. no surprises left behind. they found nothing. according to the assessors office, the family purchased the home in 2007. neighbors living near the home tell us the house has been targeted a number of times. >> i think now, with people being able to search and find people's homes, it is very distinctive and very close to the sidewalk. so many houses in this neighborhood are up flights of

stairs. >> for years now, protesters have made it an issue to bring their issues here, disregarding their privacy. in january 20 21, the home was vandalized with graffiti, prompting san francisco police to have a unit stationed outside and around the clock for several months. and now this -- a home invasion and a brutal attack on paul pelosi. >> it is hard to understand how the man got in, but i guess we will hear more. >> well, he got in to the back. >> no, i know that, but how that happened with all the security around here is hard to understand. >> because nancy pelosi was not here in san francisco, neither was her security detail. members of congress have received additional funding for security at their home because of the ongoing threats. as the midterm elections move closer, some here are concerned. >> fearing that come election day, this could be a dangerous

place to be should the right decide to camp out here. lyanne: maybe because police were so focused on this investigation, they have not said if they will bring back that police unit that they had several months ago here stationed outside of the home, but i have a feeling, assumption, if you will, that things will begin to change. as i was saying previously, to say that there was a lot of activity today here at the pelosi home is, of course, an understatement. all day, this street was close, allowing investigators to come through it, and as i mentioned before, for neighbors, it was a shocker like it was for all of us, but not a surprise. dion: we appreciate that update.
4:10 pm
larry: oh reporter joins us at sf general with the latest on paul pelosi's condition -- our reporter. ryan: at large motorcade did arrive here at sf general. we do know the house speaker did start her day in the nation's capital and was making her way to sf general to see her family and her husband that we know is recovering here at san francisco general. we are waiting to get the latest on what his condition currently is. we know from the statement set out moments ago that he is expected to make a full recovery following the injuries he received. we do know it was a fairly quiet scene except for the fact there was a part of this building -- we are on the north side of the campus -- that had a large presence of san francisco police, squad cars, and several black suv's. presumably that would be the security detail for the pelosi family. we do know he received surgery
4:11 pm
through his skull as well as surgery to his hands and arms following the assault early this morning. what we are waiting for now is that status update on what is currently going on inside the hospital. we do not know what sort of condition he is in, but the good news we did hear from the pelosi office, saying he is expected to make a full recovery. he is over 80 years old, so any time we envision trauma to the head with somebody that age, it is a concern for the family, but as we know, that's a pretty good sign for the family, knowing he is expectevery thiss center, so doctors are capable of treating those types of injuries, and that's where he was receiving treatment this type of day. once we learn more information about his that is, we will provide that to you. larry: let's turn now to abc 7 news insider.
4:12 pm
one of the questions is what about the security? you with they would have alarms if not police officers outside, but some sort of security system. >> they do have a security system, i was told. the question is if paul pelosi turned it on when he went to bed, but, yes, nancy pelosi has terrific security and if she had been in san francisco at the time, she would have been guarded and the person responsible never would have gotten inside, but we protect the office, not the office family. nancy pelosi, the vice president, the president, they get protection. she travels in a military aircraft when she comes into town or goes anywhere. she is surrounded by security, but that is not extended to the family. it was for a while back in janu may rellreeredenstrators upset e government not giving enough covid belief, and they smeared what appeared to be pigs blood and left a pigs head at her house and the garage door.
4:13 pm
after that, san francisco did a risk assessment and determined that a squad car should be there , but in time, you have other priorities and things go. interesting thing is i talked to and number of local politicians and two other congresspeople, and they say the actual threats have gone up. we are seeing it. it is not just the big names, it is across-the-board, and it has been very tough to hold any kind of office, if it's congress or even the school board these days. larry: next time you are considering running for elective office, something you may want to consider perhaps. >> the suspect is local. you will hear a lot about him. he has a history of being active on the internet, which is no news there. we have seen that. he is also one of the nudist protesters in san francisco,
4:14 pm
used to parade around l castro buck naked. the police came in, confronted with a very split-second decision. they opted not to shoot. we have all pelosi hopefully recovering. we have someone in custody. it could have gone differently very easily. if they had been a minute later, but they got there within three minutes. a lot of positive things happened in a very bad situation. larry: thank you. dion: our coverage of the attack at the speaker's continues. coming up, threats against politicians. and twitter take over -- elon musk's buy him as. and we are just days from

4:20 pm
i think in an odd way, this could be healthy. what would we do if we could play god the way elon musk has the ability to play god from twitter now? dion: there has already been some follow. general motors has announced it is temporarily suspending advertising on twitter following elon musk's takeover. larry: the ongoing respiratory virus threat here in the u.s. and what parents need to look out for. out for. sandhya: meet leon the third... leon the second... and leon... the first of them all. three generations, who all bank differently with chase. leon's saving up for his first set of wheels... nice try. really? this leon's paying for his paint job on the spot...

dion: the white house issued a statement saying president biden is praying for pelosi and for speaker pelosi's whole family. he called speaker pelosi to express support after this horrible attack and is glad that a full recovery is expected. we also heard from the vice president. >> this was an act of extreme violence, and i think we are looking at a time in our country where there is so much discourse that is fueled by hate and division, and anyone who professes to be a leader has to really understand the meaning and impact of their words and posture. i pray for paul's recovery. i know the pelosi's, and this is tragic. dion: senate minority leader

pelosi until she came home is what i heard, to the extent that is true, that is very similar to what we were hearing by the terrorists -- and they were terrorists -- the insurrectionists that took over the capitol on january 6. some of them are being held to paper for their offenses, but you have others applauding them as if they are heroes. they are vigilantes and should be treated as such. dion: we have covered some of the threats on local politicians . there has been this rise since january 6 of these attacks, the targeted ones. have you yourself felt that increased danger? have you changed the way you go about your day after what happened? >> my staff and myself have been

4:36 pm
both the results and the consequences afterwards, whatever happens? >> i think we have to wait and see. i think that the potential for very vicious conduct by those that are pleased with the results because now they think that they are going to reinstate donald trump could be very dangerous, the extent to which the democrats retain their majorities in both houses will probably generate more than -- more vindictive conversations and talk about rigged elections, and let's be really clear -- they are not rigged elections when you have a paper trail, when you can actually look at that ballot, count it, and for all the talk that went on about fraud in the 2020 election, we
