5:02 pm
the intrude senior 42-year-old berkeley resident david depage arrested after officers arrived on scene. sources close to abc7 news say depage confronted paul after breaking into a door tonight side of their home yelling for nancy's whereabouts before violently assaulting him with a hammer. paul was immediately transported to san francisco general where he underwent surgery to his head to repair a skull fracture. and severe injuries to his right arm and hand. >> how could this be? somebody broke into his home and attacked him? we were just horrified that such a thing could happen. >> just horrible. it's just horrible. it's horrific. >> investigators say the motive for this attack is still being determined. but congressional colleagues who saw first hand the violence unfold on january 6 believe it's clear this was a targeted threat toward the speaker. >> of course assassination attempt. that's what they wanted to do on
5:03 pm
january 6. that mob of insurrectionists attacked the capitol specifically to kill pelosi. and the vice president. >> it's exactly what the insurrectionists were saying on january 6. nancy, where are you? where are you, nancy? and this man broke into the home and that's what he was saying. and there is -- means there cents any difference. i can't believe this is my country. >> speaker pelosi is the highest ranking member of congress. third in line to assume the presidency. a position that has provided a full-time capitol police detail. while the speaker was away at the time of this attack, it's still unclear why there wasn't more security present at their home. >> we're working closely with our partners from the f.b.i., the u.s. attorney's office, the u.s. capitol police, and our district attorney here in san francisco county, d.a. brook jenkins. >> we'll proceed with the

5:05 pm
>> well, dan, my colleague stephanie mentioned the door that was broken. just want to give you an update that right over my left shoulder, they are repairing that glass as we speak. and you know, i pass this house on my way home every single night. and i can say that i've always thought how exposed this family has been. and you know, neighbors here, i spoke to them, they are of course shocked like we all were. but really not surprised. this morning, the pelosi he home became one of san francisco's main attractions for both locals and tourists. after word quickly spread that the speaker's husband had been attacked inside their home. police, f.b.i., and capitol hill investigators search through the house. the couple's son, paul loss i jr., was also -- pelosi jr., was also present. the bomb squad arrived, found nothing. according to the assessor's office the family purchased the

home in 2007. neighbors living near the very visible pelosi home told us the house has been targeted a number of times. >> and i feel like the more protests and everything like that that just draws attention to this block is further putting out there, you know, the address where they live. and inviting the crazies to come in and attack them with hammers. and god only knows what else. >> stop very maniizing us. >> for years protesters have made it a point to bring their issues here, disregarding their privacy. in january, 2021 the home was vandalized with graffiti prompting san francisco police to have a unit stationed outside and around the clock for several months. and now this. a home invasion and a brutal attack on paul pelosi. >> people with mental problems going along the street yelling outside my house. it's kind of scary. the whole city has gotten much worse. and i've lived here for almost 50 years. >> because speaker pelosi was not here in san francisco,
5:07 pm
neither was her security detail. even before the january 6 insurrection on capitol hill, members of congress have received additional funding for security at their home because of the ongoing threats. as the midterm elections move closer, some here are keshad. -- concerned. >> fearing that come election day, this could be a dangerous place to be should the right decide to camp out here. >> and the speaker is obviously still at the hospital. but once she arrives here, you know that she's home because of her security. and i'm talking about two to three large, very big black s.u.v.'s as part of her security. and that's why i was surprised, dan, when i heard that the person in custody was asking mre is nancy? obviously he doesn't know because it's pretty obvious when the speaker. house is home.
5:08 pm
i'm live in san francisco, lien lien. abc7 news. >> now, paul pelosi is recovering. right now at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital nancy pelosi arrived there a short time ago flying in from washington, d.c. we want to go to abc7 news reporter ryan curry for the latest on his condition tonight. ryan. >> yeah, good evening, dan. we're still waiting for an update from the then about what his current condition is right now. we do know from the statement from the newhouse speaker's office that he did receive surgery, two surgeries, one for his skull and the other for his arm. and hand. following that assault that happened at his home earlier this morning. he is expected to make a full recovery. so that is good news for the pelosi family. we do know that the house speaker is now currently here at the hospital. sky 7 did catch her walking into the hospital from the front entrance as she is now with her family presumably with them
5:09 pm
while they get an update what the husband's current condition is right now. that is following a very long -- she was in the nationas capital earlier this morning and is now in san francisco alongside her family. we have been here all day long. we do know that there was a large security presence toward the emergency room entrance of this hospital. that's on the north side. several s.f.p. squad cars were also parked there and still are there throughout the most of the evening. it was a quiet day outside of that. and now right now, we are awaiting to hear that update from hospital staff about what the current condition currently is. we do know that the speaker's husband is 82 years old. so obviously something involving a head injury like that is concerning to the family with somebody of that level of age right now. but as they mentioned in their statement, he is expected to make a full recovery. so that is very positive news for the pelosi family. and obviously now we do know is that the house speaker is back in san francisco alongside her family, alongside her husband, while he continues to recover.
5:10 pm

5:11 pm
david: depope's online rage. a variety of conspiracy theories and extremist ideologies on facebook, and his blog page welcome to big brother's censorship hell. >> covid-19 conspiracies to information against women, content against the jewish community, federal law enforcement. pizza-gate even. the pyramids on the dollar bills. >> but reyes said there were no online warnings of an imminent attack. no threats to physically target anyone. the head of u.c. berkeley center for ride wing studies tells me it's clear what fueled depope who reportedly said where's nancy as he broke into the house this morning. >> he was saying where's nancy? where do we remember that from? we remember that from january 6. >> and it was as well the occasion people were shot shouting hang mike pence. >> rosenthal says the attack of pelosi's house is a result of a failure of our national leaders to lower the temperature on political discourse. and disavow conspiracy theories.
5:12 pm
>> as long as the myth of the stolen election is maintained and nourished by the republican party, the threat of actions like today's or january 6 are going to be with us. >> and those experts are watching now to see how the extremeists respond. they are concerned this could lead to other violent attacks. >> unfortunate this happened. but hopefully a learning lesson at some point. >> we'll see. our coverage of the paul pelosi attack continues. up next, the security concerns it is raising for other members congress understandably and their families. our -- are authorities ready to change their protocol? >> also breaking right now, an arrest in the murder of an oakland dentist. the suspect, the dentist's boyfriend. we're now learning he has taken his own life while in custody. abc7 news at 5:00 will
