now to see how extremists respond. they are concerned this could lead to other violent attacks. karina: paul pelosi is being treated at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital. that is where ryan curry has been all day. he joins us now with the latest. tell us more about his condition at this point. ryan: yeah, good evening. we do know paul pelosi is still recovering here at the hospital as he is now joined by members of his family, including the speaker of the house, who arrived earlier this afternoon after a long flight coming back from washington, d.c. she was not at home during this attack. she was in the nation's capital. of course, when she learned about what happened, she came over here. that's the current status update of what we know now. she is still with her family and with her husband as they continue to recover. we know he is recovering from two surgeries, one to his skull, the other to his arm and hand.
6:06 pm
those are concerning to members of the family, given how he is over 80 years of age, so obviously, that is a big factor they are worried about now, but that's good news coming from the pelosi family, knowing they release a statement saying that he is going to be expected to make a full recovery, but once we learn more about any sort of update, we will provide that to you. we do know members of the pelosi family, including the house speaker, are here right now. karina: we wish him a speedy recovery. dan: abc 7 was the first to tell you paul pelosi underwent surgery to his skull. our coverage continues with stephanie sierra who has a timeline of events and also reaction from those close to the family. stephanie: colleagues close to the family say it is clear this was a targeted attack. sources confirm the 42-year-old suspect broke in with the intention to harm the speaker and as we heard, ended up violently attacking her husband with a hammer.

6:08 pm
we were just horrified such a thing could happen. >> it is just horrible. it is horrific. >> investigators say the motive for the attack is still being determined, but congressional colleagues who saw firsthand the violence unfold on january 6 believe it is clear this was a targeted threat to the speaker. >> of course this was an assassination attempt. that's what they wanted to do january 6. that mob of insurrectionists attacked the capitol specifically to kill pelosi and the vice president. >> it is exactly what the insurrectionists were saying on january 6. "nancy, where are you? where are you, nancy?" this man broke into the home, and that's what he was saying. there's not any difference to me. i cannot believe this is my country. >> speaker pelosi is the highest

ranking member of congress, third in line to assume the presidency, a position that has provided a full-time capitol police detail. while the speaker was away at the time of the attack, it is still unclear why there was not more security at the home. >> we are working closely with our partners from the fbi, the u.s. attorney's office, the u.s. capitol police, and our district attorney. >> we will proceed with the appropriate charges. >> pray for the pelosi family and really pray for our country and our democracy because each one of these acts really diminishes all of us. it damages the soul. stephanie: chief scott just told us depape is recovering at the hospital tonight but will be booked on attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary, as well as a slew of other felonies. in the meantime, the speaker has made it back to san francisco to be with her husband and family,

dan: even the bomb squad, a small army of police officers and investigators, have been at the pelosi house all day -- the bomb squad found nothing, thank goodness -- neighbors tell us they feel like the pelosi family has been under attack years now, especially given the current political climate. lyanne: i want to show you what we found outside the speaker's house. this envelope longs to the united states capitol police. what they do with this is they put evidence inside this envelope, and obviously, there's nothing inside, but this is proof that the san francisco police department is not the only agency involved in this

investigation. the fbi is also here. this morning, the loc home became -- the pelosi home became one of san francisco's main attractions for locals and tourists afterward the speaker's husband had been attacked inside their home. the couple's son was also present. the bomb squad arrived later to make sure there were no surprises left hind. they found nothing. according to the assessors office, the family purchased the home in 2007. neighbors living near the very visible pelosi home told us the house has been targeted in number of times. >> i think now with people being able to search and find people's homes, and it's very distinctive and very close to the sidewalk -- like, so many houses in this neighborhood are up flights of stairs. >> for years now, protesters have made it a point to bring their issues here, disregarding
6:16 pm
their privacy. in january 2021, the home was vandalized with graffiti, prompting san francisco police to have a unit stationed outside and around-the-clock for several months. and now this -- a home invasion and a brutal attack on paul pelosi. >> it is hard to understand how the man got in, but i guess we will hear more. >> well, he got in through the back. >> no, i know that, but how he got in with all the security around here is difficult to understand. >> because pelosi was not here in san francisco, neither was her security detail. since the january 6 insurrection on capitol hill, members of congress have received additional security at their home because of the ongoing threats. as the midterm elections move closer, some here are concerned. >> fearing that come election day, this could be a dangerous place to be, should the right decide to camp out here. lyanne: police are stationed
6:17 pm
outside the home now and will remain here for the time being. the speaker has not returned home, but we heard the police chief say earlier that the u.s. capitol police is in charge of security of the home but that they will assist. it is not clear if san francisco police will have a special unit outside the home like they did several months ago. my assumption is that things will quickly change around here. dan: i suspect you are exactly right. thank you. karina: in that press conference, san francisco's police chief spoke about that attack, and he got emotional. >> our elected officials are here to do the business of their cities, their counties, their states, and this nation. their families do not sign up this, to be harmed, and it is wrong.
6:18 pm
and everybody should be disgusted about what happened this morning. dan: everyone should be disgusted, the chief said. powerful words from a news conference not long ago, 20 or 30 minutes ago. karina: we want to ask about this because we knew something like this could possibly happen, right? but now that it has happened, what does this mean for other politicians and their families? phil: for a lot of politicians, and i'm not just talking about names like the speaker of the house or president of the senate or even congresspeople, but in the last couple of years, the level of discourse and discord in the united states and in the bay area has really grown. while the assault on paul pelosi is national news, i want to remind you that school board members here in the bay area routinely have their houses
6:19 pm
protested. protesters show up on their lawns in the middle of the night. the mayor of oakland in 2020 had her house surrounded by people, and then they set off fireworks and shot projectiles into her living room where she and her family were? nancy pelosi earlier on had her house vandalized and graffiti spread out, and that's one of the reasons why they have a police presence. i was talking with one politician who said that, your address is on the voter rolls and people feel no compunction about showing up at your house, and this is the next step in that, unfortunately. dan: and it is completely out of bounds. phil: but the bounds have moved. people show up at east oakland council people's houses. dan: and this is just out of bounds. it is wrong. phil: we have come to -- not just accept it, but become numb to it?
6:20 pm
dan: expect it. you have talked a lot about this and reported on it. san francisco has had a bad reputation the last couple of years for a lot of street permit problems. this is a little different, but how will this affect san francisco's image around the world? phil: it does not help. there's no way it helps. let's roll back the clock, this was the town where harvey milk and george miss goni were assassinated. this is the town where there was attempt to assassinate gerald ford in union square. this is a town that has a history of this, and this is another sad chapter in it. we hope that paul pelosi recovers, but we also cross our fingers to see if the city recovers as well. karina: at a time when the city is trying so hard -- phil: trying desperately to get a safer image out there. karina: thank you for your input. dan: we were sending out alerts
