finding solutions. this is abc7 news. >> their families don't sign up for this. to be harmed. and it is wrong. and everybody should be disgusted about what happened this morning. dan: paul pelosi, husband of house speaker nancy pelosi, attacked with a hammer at their san francisco home. the suspect allegedly yelling "where's nancy," where's nancy. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. we're getting our first look tonight at the suspect. 42-year-old david depape. he will face attempted murder and a slew of other felony charges. we have team coverage tonight on this story for you. abc7 news reporter tar tar is getting -- tara campbell. looking into the suspect's background but we will begin with live outside san francisco general hospital. that's where paul pelosi is being treated. amanda. reporter: yeah, dan. mr. pelosi may have very well saved his own life notifying police when he did.

the 82-year-old is recovering here tonight at s.f. general hospital. his wife, house speaker pelosi, visited today. surgeries to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands. house speaker nancy pelosi's husband, paul, was the victim of a violent early morning hammer attack at the couple's pacific heights home friday. >> this is code three. reporter: 82-year-old paul pelosi dialing 911 and leaving the line open. before 2:30 a.m., san francisco police officers arrived finding mr. pelosi fighting off an intruder. both struggling over a hammer. the suspect immediately arrested and later identified by police as 42-year-old david depape. >> at the point at which the police arrived, he did turn and use that hammer against the speaker's husband in a manner that appeared that he was intending kill him. reporter: sources say depape

confronted mr. pelosi after breaking through a side door. shouting for the speaker's whereabouts before the attack. nancy pelosi was in washington, d.c. back in san francisco, neighbors living near the pelosi home say the residence has been targeted repeatedly. protesters often bringing their issues to the family's front door. however, friday's home invasion and brutal attack on mr. pelosi have people worried about what could come next. >> fearing that come election day, this could be a dangerous place to be should the right decide to camp out here. reporter: the couple's son, paul pelosi jr., was present as police, fullback, and capitol hill investigators searched through the home. sky 7 was overhead as speaker pelosi landed at s.f.o. capturing her arrival at zuckerberg's san francisco general hospital in the afternoon. and late friday, our cameras caught two dark s.u.v.'s followed by al ravthe hospita ss

delivery. >> their families don't sign up for this to be harmed. and it is wrong. and everybody should be disgusted about what happened this morning. reporter: we're told mr. pelosi and speaker pelosi's daughters are also in town. the speaker's office releasing a statement on behalf of the family thanking everyone for their outpouring of support and prayers felt across the country. in san francisco, abc7 news. dan: all right, amanda. thank you very much. for more on the suspect who used to live in berkeley, abc7 news reporter unser hassan has been following that part of the story all day and joins us live from outside speaker pelosi's house in san francisco. unser. reporter: dan, good evening. it has been relatively quiet here in front of speaker pelosi's house. you can see police are still monitoring the area. but as you mentioned new details

about the suspect. law enforcement say they still don't have a precise moat he have for the attack. but we spoke to some of his former neighbors in berkeley. some say they're not surprised to learn of his involvement. residents of woolsey street in berkeley say the people in this house where david depape used to live continued to cause problems. >> any problem with the residents across the street? >> they're not the best of neighbors. >> the police were out here at least once a month. just because of neighbors wanting to, you know, just say hey, could you move your bus? you're blocking my driveway. reporter: neighbors say depaved used to live here several years ago and some say he has been back two or three years -- most recently about a month ago. >> we've seen him in the bus before and going in and out of the house and other than that we haven't seen him. reporter: would you say a month ago? >> walking over here with a child. and one of the kids from in here. reporter: the 42-year-old depape is facing several charges including attempted homicide, for allegedly breaking into speaker nancy pelosi's san francisco house and attacking

her husband. depape was hospitalized afterward but police didn't explain why. >> the suspect is still in the hospital. but let me say this. we intend to book the suspect. whether it's in person he will be booked for felony charges. reporter: kevin reyes with the institute for strategic dialogue says depap was engaged in a variety of conspiracy theories. >> covid-19 conspiracies to information against women, content against the jewish community, federal law enforcement, pizza gate even. the pyramids, on the dollar bills. reporter: he said depape was also posting about extremist ideologies on social media. his blog and facebook page have since been removed. some neighbors say they're not surprised about depape's belief based on their interaction over the years. >> and they create delusional conspiracies in their head and then they call the police and think that things are happening that aren't happening. they're completely detached from reality. and it's the most aggravating thing to have to live next to. people like that.

reporter: same way -- >> i would imagine so. i didn't have much interaction with him ever. reporter: a woman who claims she lived in the berkeley house with depape who was in a relationship with her mother blogged about his troubled childhood and the attack. she writes, this attack on nancy pelosi's husband comes as a shock to me. i didn't see this coming. and there was no sign of the possibility from his end. law enforcement tells abc news that they're treating this investigation with great urgency given the surge of threats to other members of congress, depape is expected to be arraigned on tuesday. reporting live, abc7 news. dan: thank you. there has been as you can imagine an outpouring of support for the pelosi family. and abc7 news reporter tara compel has been tracking it all and has some of the reaction. >> and i want to take a moment just to say a prayer for a friend of mine, mr. paul pelosi, who was attacked.

reporter: from former president obama to now president joe biden, friends of the pelosi family with their prayers and phone calls in wake of a vicious attack on speaker nancy pelosi's husband. pres. biden: when i spoke to the speaker she said that he's doing ok. went to the hospital was operated on. and he seems to be coming along well. he's in good spirits. reporter: investigators say the suspect attacker's moist is still being determined -- moative is still being determined but the president and some legislators believe it could very well be another act of political violence. pres. biden: the report that the same chant was used by this guy, they have in custody. that was used on january 6. the chant was where's nancy? where's nancy? where's nancy? this is despicable. >> exactly what the insurrectionists were saying on january 6.

nancy, where are you? where are you, nancy? and this man broke into the home and that's what he was saying. and there is -- to me there isn't any difference. i can't believe this is my country. reporter: and state senator scott weiner of san francisco says he knows all too well the horror. >> i received thousands of death threats over the last several years. including some very, very scary ones, threats to decapitate me. >> i'm very anxious about what's going on in the country. i -- i'm very anxious and what more evidence do you need than this morning's headlines? with speaker pelosi's husband? reporter: the attack hitting gotch newsom hard -- governor newsom hard. he's known paul pelosi his entire life. >> literally he's known me since my first breaths. what's happening in terms of the political polarization, the

cruelty, the humiliating going on in our body politick. reporter: and a handful of top republicans were also reaching out to the pelosis today. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell saying on twitter he's horrified by the attack and that he's grateful to hear mr. pelosi's on track to make a full recovery. dan? dan: that is the most important thing. a full and speedy recovery. thank you. now, this morning's attack had he pelosi home comes on the heels of a rise in attacks and threats against political leaders all across the country. >> the other party, members of the other party being portrayed as enemies, dehumanized, you know, that's the kind of rhetoric that is really dangerous in terms of encouraging people to take violent action. dan: threats to members of congress have more than doubled since 2017 according to data from the u.s. capitol police, threat assessment team. this year, numbers have only

every other month, dan: a beloved east bay dentist, her boyfriend a murder for hire plot and 12 hours later he took his own life in jail. 73-year-old nelson chia was found unresponsive in a single person holding cell in dublin this afternoon. he was arrested last night for allegedly hiring a hitman to kill his girlfriend, dr. lili xu. oakland police spoke about the motivation for the killing. >> this is not a case about race. this is a case about greed. some try to use this case as a

way of dividing our community. dan: chia was in the car with xi when she was shot to death in august in oakland's little saigon neighborhood near near lake merritt. the hitman hasheem barbon will be arraigned on monday. an imprisoned former contra costa -- a deadly 2021 police shooting in danville, 33-year-old tyrrell wilson died in the shooting. the ex-deputy, 3-year-old andrew hall, is already serving a six-year prison term for another fatal police shooting in 2018. the district attorney's office says it cannot prove that hall broke the law when he confronted wilson who was armed with a knife. all right. let's move on. big changes are already under way at twitter. now that elon musk has taken over. the company's top executives along with the top lawyer are gone. and that leaves a lot of people wondering what's going to happen next? here's abc7 news reporter suzanne phon.

reporter: elon musk is the c.e.o. of spacex, tesla and twitter. and he tweeted let the good times roll. the drama surrounding the takeover of twitter is raising lots of eyebrows and concerns about potential employee layoffs and cutbacks. among other things. >> he bought it and he has a right to do that. and we live in a capitalist society that he can do that. >> i just doesn't want to there be any propaganda or him advertising what he wants. reporter: the editor of larger c-net. >> this whole drama has been something you can't really plan or really understand. you just got to kind of sit here and eat the popcorn while it's going on. the big question, i think, a lot of us have is what is twitter going to be over the next few months and even the next few days and weeks? this is a huge experiment with one of the most influential communication platforms in the world. reporter: bigger questions remain. >> for those of us who are using it daily, i think the key question will be how much worse

is a lot of the harassment and the -- all the abuse that happens on the platform going to go? he's made it clear he wants to kind of remove some of the -- some of the guard rails of moderation and that could make it far worse. reporter: some worry if, for example, president trump who's been banned from twitter, could be allowed to return. >> a lot of people who have gotten these lifetime bans, there's a lot of real impact that could happen by saying to these people, welcome back. come on in. have fun. reporter: on this friday musk tweeted, twitter will be form a content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints. he goes on to say, no major content decision or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes. the real question will be who will be on this council and what will their interest be? will they be policy experts or reactionaries? in san francisco, abc7 news. dan: general motors has become one of the first companies to suspend advertising on twitter. the auto company says it will

evaluate upcoming changes as twitter takes a new direction under elon musk. the g.m. says, however, it will keep interacting with customers on the platform. flu season has arrived six weeks early. hospitals are seeing more people admitted for the flu than they've seen in over a decade. this year, there have been nearly 7,000 hospitalizations and 360 deaths including one child. cases are high in the southeast. and cases are now rising along the atlantic coast as well. health officials are advising people ages six months and up to get the flu shot just as soon as possible to prevent severe infection and hospitalization. crab will likely not appear on thanksgiving tables this year. after state officials delayed the start of the commercial crab fishing season, for four region, this decision comes after hundreds of whales were found looking for food along the coast and there's concern of course that they could get tangled in nets. the season was supposed to begin on november 15. officials will reassess things

on november 23. so we'll have to see. but it's not looking great for thanksgiving at this moment. i'll tell you what is looking pretty interesting is the forecast for the next few days. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the weekend, halloween and beyond. sandhya: that's right. and a little bit of everything. we'll call it a potpourri of weather. so let's talk about the big changes that are coming first which is next tuesday and wednesday. we're going to see off and on showers. gusty winds. and a winter-like chill. so get set before we get to that, though, we talk about live doppler seven. we have a couple of systems that are going to be coming out of the gulf of alaska. and this first system pushes into the pacific northwest, the second one comes in right behind it. eventually, which is next week, we're going to start to see the ridge of high pressure getting nudged and some wet weather getting into the bay area. tonight, we have temperatures in the 40's and the 50's. as we look at a live view from our explore tom camera san francisco is looking good. cool to chilly morning, warmer in the afternoon.

no tricks, all treats for halloween. and we are looking at showers in the chill to arrive the middle of next week. so for all of you having plans for halloween, this weekend is looking good by the way. for a nighttime and day tile. monday, sun goas down at 6:11 and temperatures in the comfort zone. 50's, 60's, all treats at 8:00. and it's going to be creepy clouds around, a haunted night, cool conditions by late in the evening. tomorrow morning, it's going to be cold around lake and mendocino counties where a frost advisory goes up to 12:00 to 9:00 a.m. where temperatures will drop into the low 30's and frost will form and that could cause some damage to sensitive plants. so keep that in mind. not as cold as the last couple of mornings. tomorrow morning, we're looking at cool to chilly conditions, low 40's to low 50's tomorrow afternoon. it's a milder day, low 60's, to the mid 70's inland and make -- mix of sun and high clouds. those temperatures dropped off. we had a little more of a breeze. but tomorrow we see that reversal. and that is going to continue as we head toward the rest of the weekend.

now we also have the walk to end alzheimer's that's taking place tomorrow at bishop ravage in sam ramon. the chill will be around in the morning. by the time the walk gets under way, it starts to warm up just enough to make it perfect walking conditions. low to upper 60's, michael finney will be the emcee for that event and as we look ahead to next week, exclusive to abc7 news, we have a light level one system coming our way. tuesday, wednesday, scattered showers, breezy to gusty. chilly days and nights are expected. you'll need the rain gear by tuesday morning. just really off and on showers going into wednesday. the sierra will see snowfall. this is going to amount to snow that's going to measure in inches. rainfall, not so exciting. but it's measurable. under a quarter of an inch for most of you. so for the mountains it could be tough travel weather. but certainly resorts getting snow by the middle of next week, up to eight inches. highest peaks could get up to a foot. accuweather seven day forecast, autumn warmth for the weekend. when i had to upper 70's inland. 50's and 60's coast side and a

cruising around san francisco, beating the odds. but first, turning family recipes into success. ♪♪ >> we go through 30,000 pounds of tomatoes a day. 2,500 pounds of onions, 3,000 avocados a day. >> it smells amazing in here. >> my family name is sanchez. we go back generations, and so we to started to put "the house of sanchez" on our products. ♪♪ there were tortillas and there were chips made of potatoes from frito lay, but there were no tortilla chips. if you wanted to get tortilla chips, you had to go to a restaurant, order your guacamole and tortilla chips. only way you could do it. how could you find tortilla chips you want to take them home? well, here we are. casa sanchez was able to put chips in a bag, little bit of salt, put them in a store. you could take them, have them at home. casa sanchez means to me that i could share my culture, share the food that my family

and my ancestry grew up with, authentic mexican food that's fresh, it's good, and it's real. ♪♪ started in a house on steiner street in san francisco, 1924, by my grandfather, roberto sanchez. so at that time, people were not familiar with mexican food. it's a matter of sharing what you have, sharing what you like, and sharing what you think you do well. in a baking facility on fillmore street, he installed a tortilla factory and started making tortillas. my dad, it was his idea because we had tortillas, and we had to do something with them, so might as well just cut them up and put them in chips. and it just took off. the logo came out in 1968. at that time, there were excursions to the moon, and, "let's get something that could correlate with the news of the day. let's get a rocket guy." maybe someday we'll take it to the moon.
