announcer: building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. >> their families do not sign up for this and did is wrong. and everyone should be discussed at about what happened. >> house speaker nancy pelosi's has been attacked at their san francisco home. what we are learning about the suspect and how politicians are reacting. good morning. it is saturday, october 29. i am liz kreutz with lisa argen. let's start with a quick look at the weather. lisa: it is clear. temperatures have dropped into the 30's. some of these high clouds you can see from live doppler 7 that

there is energy to the north of us. high pressure keeping us dry for the weekend. as we get into our inland east bay, 50's san leandro, 46 in union city. 44 in fremont. upper 40's from santa rosa to nevada. temperatures change, two to five degrees colder this morning. outside, it is clear and temperatures will be comfortable to the mild side from the bay to the inland valleys with upper 60's to low 70's by 4:00. some high clouds with us and we will be looking at a similar sunday before we change it up for halloween and november. stay tuned. liz: thank you. we begin with developing news. the husband of house speaker nancy pelosi is recovering after a violent attack at their home. her office says paul pelosi underwent surgery to repair a fractured skull. this morning we are getting our

first look at the suspect, 42-year-old david. he will face attempted murder and many other felony charges. we have coverage of the story and amanda kicks us off. she was at zuckerberg san francisco general where speaker pelosi visited. amanda: surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands. nancy pelosi's husband was the victim of a violent early-morning hammer attack at their home friday. >> this is a code-3. amanda: 82-year-old paul pelosi dialing 911 and leaving the line open. before 2:30 a.m. officers arrived finding him fighting off an intruder, both struggling over a hammer. the suspect immediately arrested and later identified by police as 42-year-old david to patty. >> at the point that police

arrived, he used the hammer against the speakers husband in a manner that appeared. he was intending to kill him. . amanda: sources say he attacked papa loves the after breaking through a side door. nancy pelosi was in washington, d.c.. in san francisco neighbors living near the home says the residence has been targeted repeatedly. protesters often bringing their issues to the front door. the brutal attack on mr. pelosi has people worried about what could come next. >> fearing that election day this could be a dangerous place to be. amanda: the couple's son was present as police, fbi and capitol hill investigators searched the home. sky 7 was overhead as speaker pelosi landed at sfo, capturing her arrival at the hospital in the afternoon.

late friday our cameras caught two suvs followed by a patrol car leaving the hospital. bill scott spoke with reporters, emotional in his delivery. >> their families do not sign up for this to be harmed and it is wrong. everybody should be disgusted about what happened this morning. amanda: mr. pelosi and speaker pelosi's daughters are in town. the speaker's office releasing a statement thanking everyone for their support and prayers felt across the country. in san francisco, amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. liz: more on the suspect who used to live in berkeley. our reporter talked with some of his former neighbors who say they are not surprised to learn about what happened. reporter: residents say the people in his house where david depape continue to cause

problems. >> problems with the residence across the street? >> they are not the best of neighbors. the police are out here at least once a month just because of neighbors wanting to say, can you move your bus? you are blocking my driveway. reporter: neighbors say david depape lived here several years ago. some say he has been back two or three times this year. most recently one month ago. >> would you say you saw him one month ago? >> walking with a child. reporter: the 42-year-old is facing several charges including homicide for breaking into nancy pelosi's house and attacking her husband. he was hospitalized afterward but police did why. >> the suspect is in the hospital. we intend to book the suspect. he will be booked for felony charges. reporter: the institute for strategic dialogue says david depape was engaged in a variety

of conspiracy theories. >> covid-19 berries to information against women, content against the jewish community. pizza-gate, the pyramids on the dollar bills. reporter: he says he was also posting extremist ideologies on social media. 's blog and facebook page have been removed. some neighbors say they are not surprised based on their interaction over the years. >> they create delusional conspiracies in their head and they call the police and think that things are happening that are not happening. they are completely detached from reality. it is the most aggravating thing to live next to people like that. i would imagine so. i did not have much of her -- interaction with him ever. reporter: a woman who claims to live in the house next to david depape belonged about his troubled childhood and the attack. she writes, "this attack comes as a shock to me.

i did not see this coming and there was no sign of the possibility from his end." law enforcement tells abc news they are treating this investigation with great urgency given the threats to other members of congress. david depape will be arraigned on tuesday. liz: there has been an outpouring of support for the pelosi family. tara campbell has been tracking it all and has the reaction. >> i want to take a moment to say a prayer for a friend of mine, mr. paul pelosi who was attacked. tara: from former president obama to now president joe biden, friends of the pelosi family with their prayers and phone calls in wake of a vicious attack on speaker nancy pelosi's husband. pres. biden: when i spoke to the speaker she said that he is doing ok. he went to the hospital. he was operated on and he seems to be coming along well. he is in good experience -- good

spirits. tara: investigators say the motive is still being determined by the president believes it could very well be another act of political violence. pres. biden: it is reported that the same chant was used by this guy they have in custody that was used on january 6. the chant was, "where is nancy? where is nancy? this is despicable." >> exactly what the insurrectionists were saying on january 6. nancy, where are you? where are you, nancy? this man broke into the home and that is what he was saying. to me, there is not any different. i cannot believe this is my country. tara: state senator scott wiener of san francisco says he knows all too well the horror. >> i have received thousands of

death rates over the last several years -- i have received thousands of death threats over the last several years including some very scary ones. threats to decapitate me. >> i am very anxious about what is going on in the country. what more evidence do you need than this morning's headlines with speaker pelosi's husband? tara: the attack hitting governor newsom hard. he has known paul pelosi his entire life. >> literally he has known me since my first breaths. what is happening in terms of the political polarization, the othering, the cruelty that is going on in our body politics. liz: that was tara campbell reporting. the attack at the pelosi home comes on the heels of a rise in attacks and threats against political leaders across the country. >> the other party, members of the other party being portrayed as enemies, de-humanized, that is the kind of rhetoric that is

liz: happening today a protest in support of the people of iran. supporters will link arms to form a human chain. this comes after the death of a 22-year-old iranian woman who died last year -- last weekend police company -- custody. the bay area hosting the protest at 11:00 this morning at embarcadero plaza. a strange twist in the death of

a beloved eastbound dentist. her boyfriend was arrested through what police say was a murder for hire plot. over 12 hours later, he took his own life in jail. he was found unresponsive in a single person holding cell in dublin yesterday afternoon. he was arrested thursday night for allegedly hiring a hitman to kill his girlfriend, dr. lilly sue. oakland's police chief spoke about the motivation for the murder. >> this is not a case about race. this is a case about greed. some try to use this case as a way of dividing our community. liz: sue chia was in the car with sue when she was shot to death. the alleged hitman will be arraigned on monday. an imprisoned former contra costa county sheriff that he

will not be charged for the shooting of 33-year-old tyrell wilson. the >> deputy andrew hall is already serving a prison term for another deadly police shooting 2018. the district attorney's office cannot prove that hall broke the law when he confronted wilson who was armed with a knife. big changes are underway at twitter now that elon musk has taken over. the company's top executives along with the lawyer are gone and that leaves people wondering what is next. suzanne vann has more on what the future may hold. reporter: elon musk is the ceo of tesla, spacex, and now twitter. on day one he tweeted, let the good times roll. the drama surrounding the takeover is raising eyebrows and concerns about potential employee layoffs and cutbacks. >> he has a right to do that. we are in a capitalistic society that he can do that. >> i do not want there to be any

propaganda or him advertising what he wants. >> this whole drama has been something that you cannot really plan or really understand. you have to sit here and eat the popcorn while it is going on. the big question a lot of us have is what will twitter become over the next few months and even the next few days and weeks. this is a huge experiment with one of the most influential commit occasion platforms in the world. reporter: bigger questions remain. >> for those of us using it daily, the key question will be how much worse is a lot of the harassment and the abuse that happens of a platform going to go. he has made it clear he wants to remove some of the guardrails of moderation and that could make it far worse. reporter: some worry if president trump could be allowed to return.

>> a lot of people have gotten these lifetime bans. there is a lot of real impact that can happen by saying to these people, welcome back. reporter: on this friday musk tweeted, twitter will be forming a counsel with diverse viewpoints. no major content decision or account reinstatements will happen before the council convened. the real question will be who will be on the council and what will their interest be. in san francisco, suzanne von, abc 7 news. liz: general motors has become one of the first company to suspend advertising on twitter. the company will evaluate upcoming changes at twitter taking a direction under elon musk. gm will keep interacting with customers on the platform. flu season has arrived six weeks early and hospitals are seeing more people admitted for the flu than in more than a decade. this year there have been more than 7000 hospitalizations and 360 deaths including one child.

cases are high in the southeast and now going up along the atlantic coast. health officials are advising people ages six months and up to get the flu shot as soon as possible to prevent severe infection and hospitalization. crowds will likely not be appearing on thanksgiving tables this year -- crabs will likely not be appearing on thanksgiving tables this year. hundreds of whales were found foraging along the coast. there is concern that they could get tangled in the nets. the season was supposed to start on november 15. officials will reassess things on the 23rd. happening today in san francisco, kick off the fall season with an experience at thrive city. kids will be able to trick-or-treat, there will be a pumpkin patch, a photo booth, and a screening of "the addams family two. afternoon. it should be a fun event. a lot of events going on this weekend for halloween. that is good we will not have rain. lisa: it looks like it will hold off. we are looking at a few sprinkles. a system arriving monday into tuesday. that will bring the leading edge of much colder air. we are talking temperatures 10 to 50 degrees below average -- 10 to 15 degrees below average as we get into wednesday to thursday. usually the system to the north are on the dry side. not holding a lot of moisture with this incoming system after halloween. here is a look at live doppler 7 where there are cloud to the north of us. not much fog but we will look for fog for the second half of your weekend and we are also looking at high clouds for the day today. conditions are pretty nice for halloween. as we continue to go throughout

the afternoon, high clouds will continue to visit us so we will be looking at that system staying to the north as high pressure continues to build. as we look at current numbers, 39 in nevada's. temperatures in the low 40's 40's across the bay in oakland. san jose anywhere from two to five degrees colder from mountain view into oakland. a nice brilliant view. colder this morning. warmer in the afternoon. no tricks, all treats probably in. looking for showers and chilly air. as we get into november, well below average. here is what we can expect today. notice that how clouds -- notice the high clouds out there. as we get into your sunday, a little fog forms along the coast. 70's in the inland valleys. temperatures near average. this is halloween. we will get into a slightly cooler day but as we look at monday night into tuesday, here is that weak system heading our

way and it is a lot of moisture. we could see some sierra snow with the system. it is the beginning of hopefully a better pattern into the middle of next week. it looks like another chance of rain. this is very early tuesday into the rest of the day tuesday. maybe one tent into napa early wednesday. as we go into the inland valleys, not much but we are looking at at least getting the pavement wet. anywhere from two to five inches of snow expected in the sierra nevada. that is good news. an early-season event we are looking forward to, highs today ranging from the mid-70's in concord. a mild one in the afternoon in the north bay. 75 in santa rosa. 67 on the peninsula. tomorrow, more mild readings. it will be cold in the morning. for halloween, not quite as warm

next few days. lisa: the mornings have been really cold in the north bay. with clear skies, that radiation of cooling allowing for upper 30's around the bottle. 42 san ramon. upper 40's around san jose. 50 by san francisco. that brings us anywhere from two to five degrees colder. this, mild. we will start out clear but we will get some high clouds by the afternoon and temperatures managing mid-70's in the inland valleys. this is 2:00. near average elsewhere and the numbers will be dropping into the 50's for tonight. a couple of dry days before we get a few spotty showers and much colder air arriving as we get into november. we will talk about that coming up. liz: thank you. developing this morning, nancy pelosi's husband is continuing to recover after the violent attack at their home. her office says 82-year-old paul pelosi underwent surgery to

repair a fractured skull. he is expected to make a full recovery. the alleged attacker, 42-year-old david depape, is facing attempted murder and other charges. he will be arraigned on tuesday. we are 10 days away from election day. governor newsom will be campaigning in new mexico today on behalf of the governor there. in the bay area this morning, a deeper look at the fight for school boards. a women's republican group explains why they are setting their sites on these races. >> across the country many of the most fiery political debates have been happening in a place that used to be considered pretty sleepy. local school board races. as bay area voters head to the polls, some have been surprised to learn those national culture wars are even playing out here and some of the most liberal parts of california. >> nobody like this has ever run for school board before. >> dr. moser michelson is a

professor of political science. she says there is a candidate on the ballot against teaching critical race theory. >> anti-crt in her candidate statement. liz: that candidate is running in the palo alto unified school district. she is one of 16 candidates backed by the silicon valley association of republican women. >> the yard sign, i took it out of my yard? liz: the group's president said she started an effort last year to recruit candidates to run for school boards this november. >> it started with my manicures. she is vietnamese. i talked to her about her kids and she said, they do not have the same values that the parents have. well, why is that? because they have been in public school and they have been taught that socialism is good and america's bad. >> we will have other trainings.

liz: they provided us this video from the first recruitment meeting. she says 50 people showed up. >> father god, we thank you and i thank you for these wonderful people who have said i am not willing to stand by and see our children indoctrinated. liz: she now has candidates running in 10 different school board races across the south bay including in san jose, palo alto, and morgan hill. >> he is running in cambria. liz: many of them are parents. for all of than it is their first time running for office. she showed us some of the candidates campaign flyers. >> they are not hiding. >> they are not hiding what they believe. liz: many explicitly say they do not believe in discussing gender identities like transgender in schools and are against critical race theory. one uses a photo of dr. martin luther king jr. to make their case about how to talk about race. >> if we just talked about

slavery being bad, which we all agree is bad, but now they turn it around so that white people, white children and asians have to apologize for their whiteness , apologize. and that really is totally wrong. >> we are not teaching critical race theory. this is not the case. that is a misunderstanding of what critical race theory is. liz: dr. hill is apolitical science professor. >> how are we going to talk about race in the classroom? how are we going to talk about things like lgbtq people? should books be banned? we are seeing those as hot topics playing about -- playing out across school board races. liz: she points out the school board races are nonpartisan, meaning no party affiliation is listed on the ballot but in california where democrats make up the majority of voters, the effort to mobilize candidates to

run for these school boards has been led predominantly by republicans. the california gop has even started a program called parent revolt, the goal to recruit and train school board candidates. >> in california there is frustration for republicans because state offices are held by democrats. where can you make a difference? at the local level. so school boards are those local races where the battle between republicans and democrats is still playing out. >> that has always been the strategy of the republican party for years. we can run people for nonpartisan positions. liz: even she acknowledges that this year something is different. she says she has never had this many candidates run for office. dr. michelson says given the area's political leanings, she is no surprise the candidates are being so upfront. >> that makes me wonder is that a winning message in palo alto? i would be surprised but again,

if you are more conservative in this town, you do not tend to advertise it. we will see. liz: she says being upfront as part of their strategy. >> if a voter really wants to look, they can make a decision. liz: she believes these issues are galvanizing voters, especially parents. she says just look at the school board recall in san francisco. >> did that give you momentum? did that make you think that you should do what you are doing? >> yes. i am like, ok. people are waking up. that is good. if it can happen in san francisco, it can happen anywhere. liz: this is happening all across the bay area. tomorrow morning we will show you how it is unfolding in the north bay where candidates are making a similar fight for school board. but unlike in the south bay, some critics say candidates are not being as upfront about their agenda. you can see both of these stories on our website abc7news.com.

san francisco schools will need to spend $1.4 billion in maintenance repairs. malfunctioning equipment, electrical and plumbing problems are a handful of issues the district will need to fix. modernization and upgrades to already functioning facilities are not included. more than 100 sites and the good news is the schools are safe to attend but they might be uncomfortable. today is your chance to get rid of any unused or expired medications, particularly opioids. today is prescription drug take back day. dozens of drop-off sites will be in the bay area. last year more than 15,000 pounds of medication was collected at events across the country. you can find locations at takebackday. dea. gov. if you are looking for a career in firefighting, you can meet the challenge at a career expo in the east bay. candidates can get a glimpse of their future at the firefighter career expo.

look what happens monday night into very early tuesday. a front wants to push into northern california bringing the sierra nevada some snow, some spotty showers for the bay area. it falls apart into wednesday. rainfall totals, not a lot. anywhere from a couple hundredths to around 2/10. definitely getting the ground wet and looking at anywhere from maybe five inches in kirkwood to about six inches around donner. this is certainly some good news for the sierra nevada. hopefully there is another system behind this one and we will keep you posted on that. highs today in the mid to upper 60's from san francisco to oakland. temperatures around average. you will notice high clouds throughout the afternoon and mild numbers in the 70's. how about 74 in livermore. 72 in vallejo. highs in the north bay, very mild in the mid-70's and the ocean temperature, that is cold at 54 degrees.
