fremont. upper 30's in santa rosa and nevada had 50 downtown, so 24 hour temperature change, cooler from the peninsula to the coast, and how to use the inland valleys. high clouds with mid-60's by noontime, and temperatures will be mild. with spotty showers and cold weather to come, we all explained in further detail. liz: thank you. we begin with developing news. the husband of house speaker nancy pelosi is recovering after a violent attack at their home. her office says paul pelosi underwent surgery to repair a fractured skull. this morning we are getting our first look at the suspect, 42-year-old david depape. he will face attempted murder and many other felony charges. we have coverage of the story and amanda kicks us off.

she was at zuckerberg san francisco general where speaker pelosi visited. amanda: surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands. nancy pelosi's husband was the victim of a violent early-morning hammer attack at their home friday. >> this is a code-3. amanda: 82-year-old paul pelosi dialing 911 and leaving the line open. before 2:30 a.m. officers arrived finding him fighting off an intruder, both struggling over a hammer. the suspect immediately arrested and later identified by police as 42-year-old david depape. >> at the point that police arrived, he used the hammer against the speakers husband in a manner that appeared he was intending to kill him. amanda: sources say he attacked papa loves the after breaking through a side door.

nancy pelosi was in washington, d.c.. in san francisco neighbors living near the home says the residence has been targeted repeatedly. protesters often bringing their. the brutal attack on mr. pelos has people worried about what could come next. >> fearing that election day this could be a dangerous place to be. amanda: the couple's son was present as police, fbi and capitol hill investigators searched the home. sky 7 was overhead as speaker pelosi landed at sfo, capturing her arrival at the hospital in the afternoon. late friday our cameras caught two suvs followed by a patrol car leaving the hospital. bill scott spoke with reporters, emotional in his delivery.

>> their families do not sign up for this to be harmed and it is wrong. everybody should be disgusted about what happened this morning. amanda: mr. pelosi and speaker pelosi's daughters are in town. the speaker's office releasing a statement thanking everyone for their support and prayers felt across the country. in san francisco, amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. liz: more on the suspect who used to live in berkeley. our reporter talked with some of his former neighbors who say they are not surprised to learn about what happened. reporter: residents say the people in his house where david depape continue to cause problems. >> problems with the residence across the street? >> they are not the best of neighbors. the police are out here at least once a month just because of neighbors wanting to say, can

you move your bus? you are blocking my driveway. reporter: neighbors say david depape lived here several years ago. some say he has been back two or three times this year. most recently one month ago. >> would you say you saw him one month ago? >> walking with a child. reporter: the 42-year-old is facing several charges including homicide for breaking into nancy pelosi's house and attacking her husband. he was hospitalized afterward but police did not explain why. >> the suspect is in the hospital. we intend to book the suspect. he will be booked for felony charges. reporter: the institute for strategic dialogue says david depape was engaged in a variety of conspiracy theories. >> covid-19 berries to information against women, content against the jewish community.

pizza-gate, the pyramids on the dollar bills. reporter: he says he was also posting extremist ideologies on social media. his blog and facebook page have been removed. some neighbors say they are not surprised based on their interaction over the years. >> they create delusional conspiracies in their head and they call the police and think that things are happening that are not happening. they are completely detached from reality. it is the most aggravating thing to live next to people like that. i would imagine so. i did not have much interaction with him ever. reporter: a woman who claims to live in the house next to david depape belonged about his troubled childhood and the attack. she writes, "this attack comes as a shock to me. i did not see this coming and there was no sign of the possibility from his end." law enforcement tells abc news they are treating this investigation with great urgency given the threats to other members of congress.

david depape will be arraigned on tuesday. liz: there has been an outpouring of support for the pelosi family. tara campbell has been tracking it all and has the reaction. >> i want to take a moment to say a prayer for a friend of mine, mr. paul pelosi who was attacked. tara: from former president obama to now president joe biden, friends of the pelosi family with their prayers and phone calls in wake of a vicious attack on speaker nancy pelosi's husband. pres. biden: when i spoke to the speaker she said that he is doing ok. he went to the hospital. he was operated on and he seems to be coming along well. he is in good spirits. tara: investigators say the motive is still being determined by the president believes it could very well be another act of political violence.

pres. biden: it is reported that the same chant was used by this guy they have in custody that was used on january 6. the chant was, "where is nancy? where is nancy? this is despicable." >> exactly what the insurrectionists were saying on january 6. nancy, where are you? where are you, nancy? this man broke into the home and that is what he was saying. to me, there is not any different. i cannot believe this is my country. tara: state senator scott wiener of san francisco says he knows all too well the horror. >> i have received thousands of death threats over the last several years including some very scary ones. threats to decapitate me. >> i am very anxious about what

is going on in the country. what more evidence do you need than this morning's headlines with speaker pelosi's husband? tara: the attack hitting governor newsom hard. he has known paul pelosi his entire life. >> literally he has known me since my first breaths. what is happening in terms of the political polarization, the othering, the cruelty that is going on in our body politics. liz: that was tara campbell reporting. the attack at the pelosi home comes on the heels of a rise in attacks and threats against political leaders across the country. >> the other party, members of the other party being portrayed as enemies, de-humanized, that is the kind of rhetoric that is really dangerous in terms of encouraging people to take violent action. liz: threats to members of congress have more than doubled since 2017 according to data from the u.s. capitol police threat assessment team.

he was arrested thursday night for allegedly hiring a hitman to kill his girlfriend, dr. lilly sue. oakland's police chief spoke about the motivation for the murder. >> this is not a case about race. this is a case about greed. some try to use this case as a way of dividing our community. liz: sue chia was in the car with sue when she was shot to death. the alleged hitman will be arraigned on monday. an imprisoned former contra costa county sheriff that he will not be charged for the shooting of 33-year-old tyrell wilson. deputy andrew hall is already serving a prison term for another deadly police shooting 2018. the district attorney's office

a women's republican group explains why they are setting their sites on these races. >> across the country many of the most fiery political debates have been happening in a place that used to be considered pretty sleepy. local school board races. as bay area voters head to the polls, some have been surprised to learn those national culture wars are even playing out here and some of the most liberal parts of california. >> nobody like this has ever run for school board before. >> dr. moser michelson is a professor of political science. she says there is a candidate on the ballot against teaching critical race theory. >> anti-crt in her candidate statement. liz: that candidate is running in the palo alto unified school district. she is one of 16 candidates backed by the silicon valley association of republican women. >> the yard sign, i took it out of my yard? liz: the group's president said she started an effort last year to recruit candidates to run for

school boards this november. >> it started with my manicures. she is vietnamese. i talked to her about her kids and she said, they do not have the same values that the parents have. well, why is that? because they have been in public school and they have been taught that socialism is good and america's bad. >> we will have other trainings. liz: they provided us this video from the first recruitment meeting. she says 50 people showed up. >> father god, we thank you and i thank you for these wonderful people who have said i am not willing to stand by and see our children indoctrinated. liz: she now has candidates running in 10 different school board races across the south bay including in san jose, palo alto, and morgan hill. >> he is running in cambria.

liz: many of them are parents. for all of than it is their first time running for office. she showed us some of the candidates campaign flyers. >> they are not hiding. >> they are not hiding what they believe. liz: many explicitly say they do not believe in discussing gender identities like transgender in schools and are against critical race theory. one uses a photo of dr. martin luther king jr. to make their case about how to talk about race. >> if we just talked about slavery being bad, which we all agree is bad, but now they turn it around so that white people, white children and asians have to apologize for their whiteness, apologize. and that really is totally wrong. >> we are not teaching critical race theory. this is not the case. that is a misunderstanding of what critical race theory is. liz: dr. hill is apolitical science professor. >> how are we going to talk about race in the classroom?

how are we going to talk about things like lgbtq people? should books be banned? we are seeing those as hot topics playing out across school board races. liz: she points out the school board races are nonpartisan, meaning no party affiliation is listed on the ballot but in california where democrats make up the majority of voters, the effort to mobilize candidates to run for these school boards has been led predominantly by republicans. the california gop has even started a program called parent revolt, the goal to recruit and train school board candidates. >> in california there is frustration for republicans because state offices are held by democrats. where can you make a difference? at the local level. so school boards are those local races where the battle between republicans and democrats is still playing out. >> that has always been the strategy of the republican party for years. we can run people for

nonpartisan positions. liz: even she acknowledges that this year something is different. she says she has never had this many candidates run for office. dr. michelson says given the area's political leanings, she is no surprise the candidates are being so upfront. >> that makes me wonder is that a winning message in palo alto? i would be surprised but again, if you are more conservative in this town, you do not tend to advertise it. we will see. liz: she says being upfront as part of their strategy. >> if a voter really wants to look, they can make a decision. liz: she bele galvanizing voter, especially parents. she says just look at the school board recall in san francisco. >> did that give you momentum?

did that make you think that you should do what you are doing? >> yes. i am like, ok. people are waking up. that is good. if it can happen in san francisco, it can happen anywhere. liz: this is happening all across the bay area. tomorrow morning we will show you how it is unfolding in the north bay where candidates are making a similar fight for school board. but unlike in the south bay, some critics say candidates are not being as upfront about their agenda. you can see both of these stories on our website abc7news.com. san francisco schools will need to spend $1.4 billion in maintenance repairs. malfunctioning equipment, electrical and plumbing problems are a handful of issues the district will need to fix. modernization and upgrades to already functioning facilities are not included. more than 100 sites and the good news is the schools are safe to attend but they might be uncomfortable. today is your chance to get rid of any unused or expired medications, particularly opioids. today is prescription drug take back day. dozens of drop-off sites will be in the bay area. last year more than 15,000

san mateo bridge. it is a chilly day. this morning we are getting another new image from the james webb space telescope. nasa captured this ghostly looking image. leaping across the cosmos. this is a dark side of the pillars of creation which is interstellar dust and gas speckled with newly formed stars. you cannot see the starlight because of the new infrared lights. it is about 6500 light-years from earth and was first captured by the hubble telescope in 1995. halloween is two days away but the bay area has a lot of spots you can check out. our latest abc7 original special creepy bay area highlights the spookiest including alcatraz island. ♪ reporter: in 1857 a bricks jail house was built and throughout this time rumors of spirits did not go away.
