3:00 pm
>> building a better bay area. moving forward. finding solutions. >> we get answers for you in real time. twitter employees are bracing for major layoffs. our media partner will join us to share elon musk's latest moves, including charging for that luther -- verification check mark. just a short while ago the man accused of attacking nancy pelosi's husband, paul pelosi, made his first court appearance. he is facing six state charges.
3:01 pm
since speaker pelosi -- his public defender spoke after his client waited not guilty and continues to be held without bail. >> there has also been a lot of speculation regarding my clients vulnerability to misinformation and that is certainly something we are going to look into and we are going to delve into as his defense team. >> joining us here in the studio for the first time since the start of the pandemic to discuss this and other issues, san francisco mayor. it's been a long time. >> it's nice not to be talking to a computer. >> or through a mask, but i want
3:02 pm
to start by talking about paul pelosi. have you spoken to the house speaker about how he is doing right now. >> i have spoken to the family. it's been a really tough time for the family and our hearts go out to paul and speaker pelosi and the entire pelosi family. it is such a horrible tragedy and we need to continue to keep paul in our prayers. >> it sounds like it's going to be a long recovery process. can you put it into words about how you feel about something this awful, this raisin? --brazen? >> it is heartbreaking. it makes me nervous about what
3:03 pm
this means for not only her but also for her husband as well as other elected leaders in san francisco and that some of the other elected leaders that would be considered a target by this individual. it is important that we stay vigilant. it is important that we put in protocols that are going to keep people safe. sometimes it means that you can be a target. >> can i ask you, have you faced such threats? >> i will say it sometimes there have been situations around some threats and they have been dealt with appropriately. i have had protesters in front of my home including someone who walked around with a pitchfork that could have been used as a weapon.
3:04 pm
people who are elected officials should not live in fear of their lives. >> there are two aspects. one is the response and the other is the prevention. i want to tackle the prevention part first to see in retrospect if there is more that could have been set up or done. i was surprised that there was no momentum of understanding between s out -- as spd and capitol police. --dfpd -- san francisco police department and capitol police. >> in san francisco, we are short a number of police officers but it is under investigation. my hope is that whatever needs
3:05 pm
to be put in place is put in place. we have yet to determine what that will need to be. my hope is that they will continue to work together to come to a conclusion in order to keep the pelosi family safe. there has -- >> there has been some criticism because the police have not released a body camera footage. there is a lot of misinformation, disinformation, including claims that perhaps all pelosi new --knew depape. do you want to see that footage released? >> this is not just the local san francisco police department, although our officers responded within less than three minutes to this particular incident. the fbi is involved. there are a lot of questions. and it needs to be done appropriately to make sure that the person who assaulted mr.
3:06 pm
pelosi is brought to justice because at the end of the day, i know the public wants to see, what's to know right away. but this thing has to be done right. evidence has to be gathered. the appropriate warrants need to be placed because we need to make sure that there isn't any slip-up to holding this person accountable for assaulting mr. pelosi. at the end of the day, i know the public wants to know. as soon as we are able to release any information, we will definitely do so. >> have you seen the video? have you heard the full 911 call? >> i think part of it, it's important not to believe what someone who isn't the fbi or san francisco police department or speaker pelosi is putting out there. i think what we are trying to do as soon as we are able is provide information to the public. i think that's the best advice i can give. i know the people are concerned. we appreciate that.
3:07 pm
more information will be revealed as soon as we are able to. >> you heard the news conference after the hearing today, depape 's public defender pointed to his mental health is making him more prone to misinformation suggesting that that could be a mitigating factor, a strategy. you buy that? what is your thought on that as a mitigating factor? >> at the end of the day, there sadly is a lot of hate speech. i mean, this really took me back to what happened at the white house when biden first took office in the number of the people who are doctors and lawyers and professional people who stormed the capital and assaulted a lot of people who work there, including capitol police. this type of incident brought back a lot of memories from that time based on the number of things that have been brought to
3:08 pm
the surface, and i think someone who is able to do exact when he did is clearly knowledgeable about what he did and how he was planning to do it. so i think only time will tell. the testimony and the court and my hope is that we will be able to get to the bottom of this. mr. pelosi was assaulted in his home, and that should never happen to any individual in this city, in this country. whoever is responsible for it needs to be held accountable. >> while a lot of democrats, politicians, leaders see this as an extension of january 6 and perhaps some of the speech that the former president encouraged, i think republicans right now, you hear them talk about this being the result of crime and blaming democrats for not cracking down on crime. what is your response to that? >> this is not someone we are
3:09 pm
absolutely familiar with that has even a track record. this person had a purpose in going after our speaker. i think this is unfair to attribute this to the challenges around crime. i think there is a lot of hate speech that is being put out there and social media -- in social media. we can have disagreements, but how are we going to continue the conversation along the positive so that we can get to a better place regardless of whether or not someone is supplementing the policy based on how you agree with it or not? violence should never be the answer, should never be the end result. and i think the fact that we have gotten to this place is very unfortunate in our country. >> i think most people you talk to would agree. right? some people do benefit from it, but many of us wonder how can we tamp that down with that
3:10 pm
environment is so and target is that antagonistic and hostile -- environment is so antagonistic and hostile? >> it is a hard time to be a mayor. anytime i stepped out, there are people who say a lot -- a lot of mice things but there are people who say a lot of things that are not so nice so i think part of it is you can't take a lot of this stuff personal. you have to try to put out partial -- positive energy, positive vibes. hopefully, the work you do will get people excited about wanting to be more engaged in the process. it requires all of us and we can't stop a hateful person from putting out hate speech, but what we can do is control have -- control how we react to it. >> mayor breed, thank you so much. you too, stay with us because mayor breed will be back with
3:13 pm
>> we are back with san francisco mayor breed. we should mention this is your first visit to the studio since the pandemic. >> oh wow. it's been that long. >> that leads me to the question about the city's recovery. we are doing great in terms of covert numbers and everything is open, which is fabulous. but in terms of housing -- covid numbers and everything is open, which is fabulous. but in terms of housing, let's talk about if you think there
3:14 pm
are certain propositions on the ballot that are key pieces of the recovery. >> propositioned d is on the ballot. it doesn't ask for anything additional other than to make sure that the city of that the city bureaucracy does not get into -- get in the way -- that city bureaucracy does not get in the way. we are working with the carpenters union. so many people who care about housing production in san francisco. prop d is a very good initiative. >> i know that some of the supervisors back prop e. higher level of affordable housing, but you feel like the mixed use is better for the city. >> san francisco is like a lot of our affordable housing us
3:15 pm
were extremely low income, and then it is extremely high incomes. what happens to the people in the middle? a teacher and a bus driver trying to make a living and want to live in the city. we need to diversify affordable housing and that is what our initiative does, whereas the other initiative because of the requirements, it basically makes the project economically infeasible. i think that's the difference between the two. i grew up here and most of the members of the board did not. i experienced a time when so many people who grew up here could not afford to live here and i don't want to keep going there and that's why i work so hard to get more housing built because i want to make sure that the next generation growing up in san francisco have a real shot at being able to afford to live here. >> you criticized elon musk for taking his headquarters to texas and that was before he bought twitter. now that he owns the company
3:16 pm
that is one of the biggest employers in the city of san francisco, are there attempts to build that relationship, to repair that relationship? >> we never had a relationship in the first place. i think part of what i do is i try and develop a relationship with them and make sure we are working together to not only ensure their company's success, but their employees. what they offer, but they bring to the table to our city. there are plans to reach out to him and have a conversation if he is open to it. i know that there have been some layoffs potentially. we have a number of city jobs that are open right now, almost 5000 city jobs. not only are we reaching out to twitter employees, we are reaching out to people all over the bay area because we are hiring. >> ok.
3:17 pm
it got jobs. the business journal just reported that only 13 out of 146 units at the four seasons highrise have sold and that number had not moved in three months. i want to ask you, in that article they tied it to crime and drug use. i wonder if you think those are factors, if you think that is fair. >> of course i don't think that's fair because i'm very much familiar with that exist, especially along market street. things have improved in that area. you haven't heard about any major incidents. we have had a number of conventions. we have had people who have visited the downtown area. we have really turned things around. are we where we want to be? no we are not. but we are going to keep working aggressively. real estate in san francisco as a whole is really high. this goes back to why we are
3:18 pm
pushing so hard for prop d. luxury condos, low income units, but what about everybody in between? san francisco needs to become a more economically diverse city. >> the d.a. raised -- the d.a., joe elliott. >> both have never been prosecutors. the people of san francisco said they wanted someone who is a prosecutor, who is fair, who cares about criminal justice reform but cares about accountability. there is only one candidate on the ballot who was currently the district attorney who is actually a prosecutor and doing the work and that is brooke jenkins. >> none of them represents this systemic change that we need. pointing a little to what they say is a contradiction between
3:19 pm
voters understanding they don't want criminalize crimes born out of poverty or drug addiction. >> again, some of the leadership of the chronicle did not grow up in the city. they have not had these kind of experiences that people are living with everything a day. this is a problem. on the one hand, i understand. we don't want to see people locked up for stuff never even did. if your son was killed, wouldn't you want justice? wouldn't you want that person to be held accountable? there are trade-offs to making sure that not only do we deal with criminal justice reform and give people second chances, but when those lines are crossed, there has to be accountability. brooke jenkins has finally
3:20 pm
brought it back. >> mayor, the city has a lot of issues to tackle and a lot of exciting things happening as well. hopefully you can tell us about some things that you -- but before we get to that can we show the mayor's twitter account? should i be addressing you as your majesty? >> we take halloween seriously in this city. that was the high school i went to and i had a great time yesterday dressing as queen charlotte from richardson. so many people walked up and a sad are you marie antoinette? i said no. >> what are some of the other fun things you're looking forward to? >> we just opened a rollerskating rink in front of city hall. there are so many great activities going on that brings family and community together. i'm looking forward to the

vo: climate change is fueling a wildfire crisis. destroying our forests. threatening our communities. polluting our air. prop 30 taxes those making over $2 million a year. no one else pays a penny. 30 will reduce the tailpipe emissions that drive climate change. and prevent wildfires and toxic smoke. so we have clean air to breathe. this is about our kids' future. omar: prop 30 helps contain fires and combat tailpipe emissions. vote yes on 30.
3:23 pm
>> now that elon musk has taken over for twitter, he has taken the company from public to private and is already fired top executives. our media partners report more layoffs are imminent. you can read about it in this article. we are asking, when will the layoffs happen? who is likely to get that pink slip. joining us to answer that question is annie. nice to have you on the show. >> i'm not sure we are getting your audio right now.
3:24 pm
are we getting your audio? we are good? there you go. ok. he has already fired top executives. who is now at risk for layoffs? how many may be at risk? >> currently, twitter has 7500 employees and we are hearing reports that up to 25% of the company could be laid off. these layoffs, according to reports, are expected to go across the board with particular focus on the trust and safety division. >> what does that mean? why would you want to get rid of people in content moderation? >> elon musk is both a power user of twitter as well as a frequent critic of the platform. he has also been critical of
3:25 pm
content, twitter content policies. aggressively weeding out hate speech and other inappropriate content. for that reason, there is a lot of concern that he would plan to got those policies and bring more of a free-speech atmosphere to the platform which is something that has been controversy over. >> for people who monitor the platform, some have said they seem -- that they have seen an increase in hate speech and just the past week. i want to ask you about this other controversy. elon musk floated the idea of having users pay for verification that covered the blue check mark. we are hearing $20 a month. then we heard eight dollars per month. >> it certainly seems from the outside that he is making things up on the fly a little bit. as you mentioned, there are reports that his inner circle of
3:26 pm
people around him charging $20 for that blue check which is a status symbol, but then he got a lot of blowback from people saying we are not paying that. there was one particular exchange where stephen king said an expletive regarding that price point and there was a back-and-forth. earlier this morning, he posted the idea that eight dollars for a blue check. it remains to be seen what this will wind up being, but a lot of people won't be happy with that. that's fair to say. >> what is his endgame? i want to ask you his strategy for moving twitter forward. >> broadly speaking, the strategy is to cut costs, get more revenue. but i think he has definitely a
3:27 pm
serious mountain to climb. tesla and spacex. -- he also runs to other companies. tesla and spacex. twitter has been around for a while and it hasn't changed much. any other ideas you may have will probably turn a lot of users off. he has a huge challenge in front of him. >> indeed. >> opening the platform might turn off advertisers. he's walking a tight rope. >> san francisco standards senior editor, thanks
