>> this is abc7 news. dan: new details emerging tonight about the security around house speaker nancy pelosi's san francisco home. u.s. capitol police confirmed with abc news that the cameras were not actively monitored during the home break in and attack on paul pelosi. plus, the suspect's neighbors are speaking out tonight. >> he seemed to fit in. all of a sudden he was a little odd. >> the suspect david depape will be back in court on friday for a preliminary hearing. good evening. dan: today we spoke with neighbors who describe depape as a quiet man who did not seek social interaction. ama: abc7 news reporter ryan

curry has the details. >> i think he was transferring his own frustration, confusion him and failures, and inabilities to the outside world. ryan: residents on this street recall their reactions with -- their interactions with david depape. neighbors said he had interest in online conspiracy theories. >> he was looking to some ideas that are out there in politics and the social sphere to solve some really deep-seated personal problems of his. ryan: this man says he has lived on this street for around 20 years. he worked with depape a few times but said he would always keep to himself. >> he made it clear that he did not want to engage socially with people, so he would respond to a question or an inquiry, but he wouldn't elaborate on it. ryan: according to court documents, depape lived in this garage. residents say he lived there for a couple years.

nancy has been in this neighborhood for around 50 years and says he began acting strange. >> i had no reason to think he was anything different, except one conversation. just like one of the people in the papers who said he began to act different. ryan: she said he would often do handiwork for some neighbors, but most of the time she said he would keep to himself. >> he was quiet and kind of evasive. ryan: depape now faces multiple felony charges. residents say they wish they could have done some thing to stop it, but they know with him being so quiet there was not much they could have done. >> i maybe do not try harder to be a buddy with him or talk to him about things, but then again he was an adult and he made it clear what his preferences were about associating with people. ryan: enrichment, ryan curry, abc7 news. dan: we are learning new details about the attack on speaker of the house nancy pelosi's house. capitol police say they were not

actively monitoring the cameras at the time of the attack. ama: they say they will now be providing new protective options to address security concerns. dan: i-team reporter stephanie sierra is digging in to the lack of security. stephanie: we are learning new details about the security around speaker pelosi's home during the attack. sources close to abc news indicate there was a mishap between the security system and u.s. capitol police. those familiar with the matter are calling it an embarrassing oversight. abc7 news has learned u.s. capitol police had cameras installed outside house speaker and people lucy's home -- sp eaker nancy pelosi's home well before the attack, but what about an alarm? sources confirmed to the i-team the speaker does have a private security system, and questions are being raised about how the security system interacted with police agencies the morning of the attack. law enforcement sources confirm to abc news, when the home

security alarm is triggered, the private security system is supposed to notify the san francisco police department first, then u.s. capitol police. but two sources familiar with the matter say capitol police never received a call from the private security system and say it is unclear if the alarm never went off. a huge -- a huge oversight paired with no physical security detail. >> these threats are not new, let's be very clear. stephanie: what is also clear -- >> there was no security present. there was no capitol police, no private security present at the time. stephanie: while u.s. capitol police was not physically there, the department confirmed their cameras captured the break-in. the problem, no one was monitoring them at the time. sources say it was only after local police arrived that capitol police caught on, eventually spotting flashing lights after rewinding the video to see the break-in. >> as of now the san francisco

police department is assisting with security. we will sort out whatever we need to sort out. stephanie: it appears there is a lot still to sort out. we asked chief scott about that directly. why isn't there some sort of formal agreement between sfpd and u.s. capitol police? >> there may be in the future. but currently there is not. we have worked with capitol police before. stephanie: yet the department has been unable to confirm if there was any formal agreement between the two agencies, when that changed, and why. stephanie: all of those questions we will continue digging into. meantime, congresswoman zoe lofgren sent a letter to the chief of u.s. capitol police, demanding answers about their handling of member security and protocols. capitol police in the meantime released a statement indicating the department has begun an internal security review and will review input and questions from their congressional

stakeholders. certainly more to come on this. dan: no question. thank you, stephanie. the bay area is seeing more november rain. you can see rainfall on the bay bridge eastbound on a stretch of i-580 eastbound to pleasanton, even hail coming down pretty hard in san jose. ama: let's check in with abc7 news meteorological sandhya patel. sandhya: it is quieter now compared to earlier today. let me show you live doppler 7. we have a few showers popping up. let me show you where as we get you into street-level radar northwest of vacaville, pleasant valley road seeing a light to moderate pocket of wet weather. saw everything from hail to thunderstorms passing through parts of the south and east bay, even the north bay. there was some mixed precipitation over mount hamilton. we go even further out and you will notice the area of low pressure is spinning over northern california and oregon.

light level 1 storm with lightning strikes still to our northeast and off the coast. tonight, isolated showers until the sun goes down, then pretty much everything will start to fade. guess what is going to come into play? the chill. it will feel like winter with a frost advisory for the north bay valleys, hard freeze warning. i will be back to show you exactly how cold and how long, coming up. ama: at stanford, the university confirms a man lived illegally on campus for nearly a year, posing as a student. he was most recently caught on thursday in the basement of a dorm. abc7 reporter zach fuentes spoke with the newspaper reporters who broke the story. zach: it has been the talk of campus. 20-year-old william curry posing as a stanford student for nearly a year. the story was broken by the university newspaper, the stanford daily. these reporters were tipped off by a fellow writer who lives in the university's hall.

>> armed with the screenshots i have gotten from that writer which basically revealed through messages sent by an ra in that slack that there was a squatter living in carruthers hall for weeks. zach: many were convinced curry was a student. >> there were talking about eating brownies with this man. zach: the stanford daily confirmed he had been on campus for over a year with the university's knowledge. >> he sometimes climbed through windows. he sometimes was able to take a student's i.d. card. he was getting let in a lot of the time by people who thought either he was living there with them or was a friend of somebody living in the dorm. zach: the daily confirmed he stayed in at least four different dorms, something the university never communicated broadly to the campus. >> he was able to weave a new story every time. zach: stanford officials said in a statement that the university's public safety

department had obtained stayaway letters to serve curry, but were not initially able to find him. they admitted there were no indications about him broadly. we reached out to curry on instagram. he replied to us, saying he had nothing to add, and that the school's newspapers said everything they need to say about the topic. that newspaper said it will continue to follow up on this story. >> a lot of people are still wondering about the unanswered questions, which is how did this happen and why? zach: at stanford, zach fuentes, abc7 news. dan: dozens of union workers are off the job at the port of oakland. one trucking company owner who spoke with abc7 news says it is part of the contract is feel with the international -- the contract dispute with the international shore and warehouse union. a port spokesperson says there is a pushed open the marine terminals for tonight's work shift. ama: educators from san

francisco unified school district held a sick out over an ongoing issue with benefits and payroll. they protested outside the school district's office on franklin street. >> i should not be consoling my coworkers crying in my office, worrying about how they are paying rent, or whether or not the benefits for themselves, spouses, or kids will get caught off. can you imagine? ama: teachers have expressed that they have not received correct payments since the school district adopted a new pay will system in january. developing news about a crime impacting many neighborhoods across the bay area, the theft of catalytic converters. dan: abc7 news anchor karina nova is here with details about the takedown of a massive multimillion dollar catalytic converter theft ring. karina: it is big. this nationwide takedown includes arrests and seizures in california, oklahoma, wyoming, minnesota, new jersey, new york,

nevada, north carolina and virginia. 21 people were charged and 32 search warrants were executed. investigators also found a connection between a fraudulent business in sacramento all the way to new jersey. a u.s. attorney says because of california's higher admission standards -- emission standards, california cars are a higher target for catalytic converter theft. they can be sold on the black market for more than $1000. last year there were approximately 1600 catalytic converter theft reported in california each month. this video is the home where law enforcement showed up new jersey today. according to court documents, three people out of sacramento allegedly operated an unlicensed business, buying stolen catalytic converters and shipping them to new jersey for processing. that accounted for more than $38 million in sales alone. and dozens of agencies contributed to this massive

ama: on the heels of santa clara county sheriff laurie smith declaring her retirement, her two are gearing up for election day. dan: dustin dorsey looks at the two candidates up for county sheriff. dustin: in santa clara county there is only room for one sheriff in town. with election day less than one week away the race is down to two candidates, bob jonsen and kevin jensen. >> i am feeling hopeful and optimistic, cautiously optimistic about my chances. dustin: jensen has built on his momentum with large endorsements from the santa clara county shavers -- county sheriff debbie's association, among others. after growing up with his father in prison, jensen joining the sheriff's office in 1985. jensen touts his experience

take a look at the sierra nevada. they are picking up some snow. chains are required on roads leading up to tahoe. so far the resorts are reporting from one inch to a foot of snow. there are thunderstorms flaring up to our north. winter storm warning in effect for the sierra until 8:00 p.m. tonight. the snow level has been around 3500 to 4500 feet. additional two to six inches of snow expected. a couple more inches of snow. tahoe under a winter weather advisory. hold off until 8:00 tonight. things will quiet down after that. look at this gorgeous view from our santa cruz camera. a little rough on the waters. isolated showers ending after sunset. cold the next two mornings with frost. weekend showers with unsettled weather into next week. 50's and 60's on temperatures right now. that ocean temperature is 53 degrees. it is a light storm just for a couple more hours this evening. a few showers, selections of
