breaking news and that breaking news in santa clara county former sheriff. lori smith has been convicted in her civil corruption trial good evening. i'm on a date and i'm dan ashley. thank you for joining us smith was found guilty on all six corruption and misconduct counts in her civil corruption trial. abc 7 news reporter zach fuentes is live in san jose with details sac. now this has been something we've been following for quite some time not in the news of the verdict just coming down a couple of hours ago this afternoon only days after smith resigned from office. we'll take you to some video now of her walking into the courthouse today. now the accusations were brought by the 2021 santa clara county civil grand jury smith was accused of providing concealed carry weapons permits in exchange for political donations or other favors not reminder.

this was a civil corruption trial. it's meant to remove her from office. but as i just mentioned she resigned on monday just before this verdict was issued. so what this now means legally remains to be seen her attorneys tried to have the case thrown out after she resigned but we're not successful still she could be facing criminal charges in the same issues now just about an hour ago. we heard from santa clara county district attorney jeff rosen who reacted to this verdict take a listen to what he had to say. we're gratified that the jury considered all the evidence from our lengthy and detailed investigation and found all of the allegations against the sheriff to be true. we look forward to working with the next sheriff and all the hard-working honest men and women in the sheriff's office to serve our community with honor and integrity. the sheriff's office. it's now being led by acting sheriff ken binder who released a statement that said in part. we respect the jury's decision and remain focused on our

mission to continue to provide the highest level of public safety and service to our community that statement goes on to say that they're looking forward to the sheriff election happening next week now we did reach out to laurie smith's attorney who said he would not be offering any comment in light of this verdict now later tonight. we're going to hear more from the district attorney jeff rosen and also at least one of the candidates running in that sheriff's election right now live in san jose zach fuentes abc 7 news. right zach. thank you so much. now to developing news paul pelosi was released from sf general today nearly a week after he was attacked inside his san francisco home. here's a look at that house. paul. pelosi is back home recovering his wife house speaker nancy pelosi released a statement late this afternoon saying the pelosi family is thankful for the outpouring of support from around the world and express gratitude to first responders who helped save her husband's life. the house speaker says her husband is under a doctor's care and recovering abc 7 will continue to bring you the very latest developments.

big tech giants in the bay area are announcing major layoffs across the board leaving thousands of workers concerned that they could end up jobless soon. yeah abc 7 news reporter suzanne phan joins us live to explain how these cuts will have a ripple effect on everyone in the bay area suzanne. well today bay area based stripe announced that it will lay off a thousand people and list says, it's going to let go of 700 people and we can't forget about twitter more companies are downsizing saying that they're blaming economic conditions market downturn or restructuring. this is an unusual day. i have never seen so many layoffs announced on the same day. that's ted egan chief economist for the city and county of san francisco lift the ride-hailing giant and stripe a fintech company each plan on cutting their workforce by 14% and of course, there's also twitter owner elon musk has announced plans to slash 3700 jobs. that's half the company's headcount since january the san

francisco standard has been tracking cutbacks with its layoff tracker. 16,772 workers have been laid off at 138 san francisco companies many of them happen to be tech companies, california is known for its tech industry. we've got to be careful that we don't want to destroy our economy. we talked to economics professor daniel venzel at san francisco state university about the overall layoffs, but this is a deliberately created recession by the federal reserve bank because that's the only way we can end inflationary expectation. it's just one of the tragedies of a monetary and fiscal policy is we have the tools but it's like using a shotgun to kill a mosquito. it's it's too bad. that's the only tool in our arsenal. even though there are concerns about the economy slowing new data on this thursday shows companies are still hiring that there are two jobs for every one worker. there are charts out there

indicating that unemployment has dropped and that there are a lot of jobs out there. that's because they're different sectors. that some firms may be hiring. temporary workers for the for the holiday season so but but the labor market is balkanized. the reality though is tech is a major major driver of the city in the regions economy, and if you have thousands and thousands of tech layouts, that will have ripple effects on other industries and the unemployment rate will not stay at a record low. it's going to have and chief economist ted egan says that september was the first month where san francisco and the san mateo area saw a loss and tech jobs since the very beginning of the pandemic. we're alive in the newsroom suzanne fawn abc 7 news suzanne. thank you, california. governor newsom is putting one billion dollars in funding on hold because he says local governments plans aren't aggressive enough to curb homelessness in their communities governor newsom says

the collective plan submitted by counties would only reduce homelessness statewide byt four. the governor says the counties approach needs to accelerate to provide relief to the unhoused crisis state lawmakers committed to spending 15.3 billion over the next three years to combat homelessness the california department of justice completed its first mandatory criminal investigation of a police shooting a state law passed in 2020 requires the doj to investigate all deadly police shootings involving an unarmed person. it's first case was about matthew james sova. he was shot and killed by lapd officers in july of 2021 sofa was holding a lighter that looked like a pistol when he was shot by police the do-g-j determined that there wasn't enough evidence to file criminal charges against those officers. in that spirit we've embraced a fair impartial process. where the california department of justice follows the facts and nothing else as we seek to

50,000 uc workers are planning to go on strike members of three different unions voted this week to approve the strike over a lack of pay from the university system abc 7 news reporter. ryan curry was at uc berkeley today speaking with leaders of the strike. union workers at uc berkeley are getting each other to sign up for strike pay thursday. this comes as three different unions prepared to walk off the job as early as november 14th. we've done our best to try and reach a fair agreement or bargaining in good faith. the university is not given us that same courtesy tonsil chaudhary works as a graduate student researcher for the lawrence berkeley lab he along with potentially 50,000 researchers teaching assistants and post doctor workers across the state will leave their jobs because they claim the university of california system is not paying them enough. i know some people are making as little as 24,000 a year show the recess his job with the berkeley lab requires him to do numerous tasks, but the school only pays him for 20 hours of work a week. he says he is constantly

exceeding that i'm regularly working over 40 hours. sometimes when things are you know, really hectic i'm working 560 hours to get all that work done the unions involved or asking the uc system to raise pay to help meet growing housing prices and inflation. toward theri says the strike will put a burden on the schools. we do the vast majority of the teaching work here at this university. right? we also do almost all of the research work of this university, right? so if you know that works stops, we walk out where we're on strike. i don't think this university can continue to function without us. we reached out to university of california president's office. we're waiting to reply you see berkeley. however said that if the strike does happen, it will have a serious effect on how it goes about scheduling undergraduate courses in a statement. you see berkeley said clearly if all postdocs academic researchers academic student employees and graduate student researchers decided to stop working. it would have a significant impact on the campus including the potential for various courses and or sections not

pickleball players in san francisco want more courts. it's really number one really impossible to book pickleball courts in the city. there's not enough tennis courts can be used to play pickleball by painting in the proper lines and setting up shorter nets, but the push is on for more dedicated pickleball only ports like the ones here at goldman tennis center. what's it like booking times to play on these dedicated courses hard to get time. i think it depends if you're if you have a flexible schedule when i've looked early morning or even later in the day. there are quarts of elbow san francisco wreck and parks has a proposal to put in eight dedicated pickleball courts at stern grove where two tennis courts were recently destroyed by a water main break. so i've seen from the map there were two tennis courts here that were dual-lined for pickleball which made for six pickleball court martha arafeld co-chairs the tennis coalition of san francisco. we understand the pickleball is
