developing news just coming into our newsroom multiple media reports outlets. excuse me are reporting that twitter employees have just been notified that elon musk will begin his mass layoffs at twitter tomorrow morning. bloomberg reports musk is planning to cut as many as 3,700 jobs roughly half of twitter's workforce, but twitter is not the only tech giant in the bay area announcing layoffs abc 7 news reporter suzanne fon joins us live to explain suzanne. so today bay area bay stripe announced it'll lay off a thousand people lift says it's letting go of 700 and just now we're hearing about twitter. this is an unusual day. i have never seen so many layoffs announced on the same day. that's teddy getting chief economist for the city and county of san francisco lift the ride-hailing giant and stripe a fintech company each plan on cutting their workforce by 14% and of course, there's also twitter owner elon musk has announced plans to slash 3700

jobs. that's half the company's head count since january the san francisco standard has been tracking cutbacks with its layoff tracker. 16,772 workers have been laid off at 138 san francisco companies many of them happened to be tech companies, california is for its tech industry. we've got to be careful that we don't want to destroy our economy. we talked to economics professor daniel vencil at san francisco state university about the overall layoffs, but this is a deliberately created recession by the federal reserve bank because that's the only way we can end inflationary expectation. it's just one of the tragedies of monetary and fiscal policy is we have the tools but it's like using a shotgun to kill a mosquito. it's it's too bad. that's the only tool in our arsenal. even though there are concerns about the economy slowing new data on this thursday shows

for coverage of the 2022 midterm elections from the big national races to the local measures affecting your neighborhood in alameda county. for example, there are two candidates running for district attorney and erase that will make history abc 7 news anchor and race and social justice reporter. julian glover sat down with both of those candidates. he's here now live with what they had to say julia. hey, good evening dan. i appreciate that the race for the district attorney's office is wide open in alameda county. there is no incumbent or da being appointed something that has not happened in nearly 40 years and voters in alameda county are deciding between two candidates pamela price and terry wiley those candidates offering very different visions for safety and accountability. family price stands for integrity and dependence transparency equity and accountability. i stand for a safe community. i wanted to be a fair and justice system. alameda county voters are turning in those mail-in ballots in preparing to head to the polls among the hot races are the two candidates for the

district attorney's office. the county's top prosecutor pebble a price the reform candidate and civil rights lawyer whose campaigning on adopting progressive policies like indian cash bail or terry wiley a 32-year veteran of the da's office who now serves as the chief deputy da. he's campaigning on a more pragmatic approach to the job. here's what they do day one. i need to immediately identify people. we're prosecuting who are incarcerated simply because like maybe they ran afoundland because they're mental illness. i think i would change the culture of the district attorney's office, i would and you know, look, i have a different life experience than nancy o'malley wiley is distancing himself from his current boss, nancy o'malley. retiring after a controversial 13 years is da wiley said he wants to change the culture by diversifying the office tripling the number of asian-american prosecutors. this is prices second run for office. she ran against o'malley in 2018

at winning 42% of the vote. the two candidates do agree on some changes. they would implement like never seeking the death penalty being more transparent by releasing more stats on who is being prosecuted and decreasing the criminalization of people under 18, but there are several areas where they differ including what to do with the crowd at santa rita jail in dublin one of the largest jails in the country with growing concerns over the treatment of the people being held in custody. most people do not need to be held in santa maria county jail. they are either not a flight risk, or they're not a danger to themselves to other people and even if they're a danger to themselves, that is not the place. from mental health treatment prices said she would decrease the jail population by 25% in her first term by expanding diversion programs and decreasing the use of cash bail her opponent agreed on limiting cash bail for non-violent property crimes, but would not commit to decreasing the jail population. we also want to make sure the

community is safe and we're not going to be releasing people who've committed murder rate and robbery just for the sake of having fewer people in santa reading jail, the two candidates also differ on their messages surrounding police accountability and public trust and issue and focus after the news that 47 alameda county deputies were unfit to serve because of failing psychological exam scores. we're gonna have a public accountability unit. that will be responsible for independently investigating any allegations of misconduct by police officers, and we will hold them accountable. so we're going to be working together and so i'm not going to send a message that i'm out to get police officers. i mean police officers working with us to make this a more safe community, but that can certainly be an understanding that you can hold law enforcement officers accountable and also expect them to do their generally and that's where i am we will hold law enforcement to a high standard.

thospetunot be ass this morning when we saw low to mid 30s tomorrow morning. we're looking at mostly upper 30s to the upper 40s, although solano county will see some temperatures dropping near freezing tomorrow afternoon a mix of sun and high clouds temperatures coming up a few more degrees upper 50s to the upper 60s and then we bring in a level one storm for saturday exclusive to abc 7 news. it will include light showers under a quarter of an inch for most of you and breezy at times. this is not going to be a complete washout for saturday, but have your umbrella's handy so eight o'clock there might be a little drizzle saturday morning. the main event is saturday afternoon in the north bay at 2 o'clock 6pm. it's crossing the central bay as we had towards the south bay by 9 pm and 11 pm is still concentrated in the south bay. so we'll call it scattered light showers. this is beneficial rain helps reduce our fire danger. you're looking at anywhere from a couple hundreds to about a quarter of an inch.

battle is brewing in san francisco, but this drama doesn't feature a judge and jury. it's a showdown between tennis and pickleball abc 7 news reporter tara campbell explains. what's at play in a highly anticipated meeting that's happening now. it's one of the fastest growing sports in the country and pickleball players in san francisco want more courts. it's really number one really impossible to book pickleball courts in the city. there's not enough tennis courts can be used to play pickleball by painting in the proper lines and setting up shorter nets, but the push is on for more dedicated pickleball only quartz like the ones here at goldman tennis center. what's it like booking times to play on these dedicated courses hard to get time. i think it depends if you're if you have a flexible schedule when i've looked early morning or even later in the day. third quartz available san francisco. recon parks has a proposal to

put in eight dedicated pickleball courts at stern grove where two tennis courts were recently destroyed by a water main break. so i've seen from the map there were two tennis courts here that were duel lined for pickleball which made for six pickleball court martha arafeld co-chairs the tennis coalition of san francisco. we understand the pickleball is exciting growing sport and we support it. we just don't support converting any tennis courts permanently to pickleball courts right now. there are only 11 dedicated pickleball courts in all of san francisco half of the time the tennis courts here are empty during the week and yet, you know, we can't use them to play pickleball but tennis players are quick. to make the same case. it's nearly impossible to get a court reservation during the prime times and you know frequently i'll still see when i try to reserve a court that pickleball courts are still available as well and both sides are expected to make their voices heard this evening at a

it's many people's favorite time of year, but it's also the time that we've seen some of our biggest surges of covid and santa clara county deputy public health officer, dr. sarah. redman says the virus and its subvariance could play a grinch troll this holiday season if we're not prepared in this new variance getting a foot hold or starting up here is camping down the overall amount of transmission happening by reducing all transmission and she says we could do this by getting the new by valent covid-19 booster the county sits at about 17% of all residents who have received the updated vaccine sounds low, but it's good compared to the state total of roughly 11% of the 17 million californians that got the initial booster only three million so far have gotten the updated shot and dr. redmond says more is always better. we don't know what level action will need to make sure we're

today speaking with leaders of the strike. union workers at uc berkeley are getting each other to sign up for strike pay thursday. this comes as three different unions prepared to walk off the job as early as november 14th. we've done our best to try and reach the fair agreement or bargaining in good faith that university is not giving us that same courtesy tonsil chaudhary works as a graduate student researcher for the lawrenceburg lab he along with potentially 50,000 researchers teaching assistants and post-doctorate workers across the state will leave their jobs because they claim the university of california system is not paying them enough. i know some people are making as little as 24,000 a year show the recess his job with the berkeley lab requires him to do numerous tasks, but the school only pays and for 20 hours of work a week. he says he is constantly exceeding that i'm regularly working over 40 hours. sometimes when things are you know, really hectic i'm working 50 60 hours to get all that work done. the unions involved are asking the uc system to raise pay to

help meet housing prices and inflation. show theri says the strike will put a burden on the schools. we do the vast majority of the teaching work here at this university. right? we also do almost all of the research work of this university, right? so if you know that works stops, we walk out where we're on strike. i don't think this university can continue to function without us. we reached out to university of california president's office. we're waiting to reply you see berkeley. however said that if the strike does happen, it will have a serious effect on how it goes about scheduling undergraduate courses in a statement. you see berkeley said clearly if all postdocs academic researchers academic student employees and graduate student researchers decided to stop working. it would have a significant impact on the campus including the potential for various courses and or sections not being taught. uc berkeley went on to say they are ready to work with other faculty to limit some of the issues children says the union members are ready to fight for what they want the demands that we're making the proposals that

there's a lot of dirt, but we try to make it look pretty with all these windmills and flowers the tree down to earn enough money to buy a grave show a very expensive. so that's when i kind of started like, you know, putting together. okay, how much am i going to need and just days before the anniversary of her mom's passing. she met the goal, but it was just then she got this text. it looked exactly like a replica of the typical alerts that bank of america would send the text asked if she sent 3500 dollars just someone named jacob tanner alarm. she replied no and her phone rang the caller id said bank of america like they were from bank of america. they sounded very professional very concerned a man on the phone said someone was about to take 3500 dollars from her account. so i need to create another account it can be safe. man told her to quickly transfer the money through zell, which was right there on her b of a mobile app.

honestly, i've never used zell. so i like i was so confused, but instead of going to her account the money went straight to the scammers. it was gone like all my money. that was the money. i was supposed to be for my mom. mom's headstone and i was supposed to surprise my dad with it. i was devastated i started crying. yeah, i don't think this would ever happen to me if bank of america and zelle were intertwined together. she pleaded with bank of america to reverse t transaction, but the bank denied her client saying she authorized a transfer even if it was a scam. i've been with bank of america since i was like 15 years old. i've been a loyal customer with them and and then this happened they're just like whatever, you know, it's just like oh we can't help you. now we as bank of america why it would not refund her money when it did refund other victims of the exact same scam whose stories we've told you before now the banks had to considers

and precise data on changes like temperatures the impact of melting glaciers and sea level rise and perhaps to look into the future for our coastline and san francisco bay and how the currents move and how sea level changes on these much finer scales as you get closer to coastlines the bay area. there's a lot of complexity there as you get into the bay this satellite will not only measure the world's lakes rivers and reservoirs. it will help track changes in the movement and volume of water professor tamlin pavelski of the university of north carolina is working as the hydrology science lead for the mission. he says that three-dimensional understanding could be critical for drought ravaged areas. so if you think about all the lakes and reservoirs like up in the sierra's for example, but also in china and africa everywhere, we're going to be able to see how the amount of water that's stored in them changes over time. during droughts. we'll see how much less water we have and during really wet periods. we'll be able to actually track like quantitatively how much more water we have experts
