dan: six days after getting hit in the head with a hammer and suffering a fractured skull, paul pelosi has been released from the hospital. ama: tonight, we have confirmation that nancy pelosi's husband is back home. he was attacked last friday and had the house -- had been hospitalized ever since. jr stone is following this developing story and joins us live tonight from pelosi's neighborhood. reporter: most neighbors that i spoke with were well aware of what happened to paul pelosi last week. when i told them he was back home, they were overjoyed. one woman throwing her hands up

in the air. all is quiet at nancy pelosi's san francisco home hours after this van backed into the family's garage. later, it was confirmed that paul poulos was home recovering, arriving thursday after spending nearly a week in the hospital for treatment after a hammer attack. >> i'm glad he got better. he's an older guy. an injury like that could have been fatal. i'm glad he survived. reporter: the reaction? heartfelt. >> i'm grateful that he got to go home. i know he had serious injuries. >> i'm happy for them. have to get back home. that's a huge blessing. reporter: paul poulos he was treated for a skull fracture. dr. david spain isn't aware of the specifics with pelosi but

has read that he was knocked unconscious and laying in a pool of blood when medics arrived. >> if i hear that story, somebody coming into the yard, my first thought is that this is going to be a long road to recovery. reporter: some patients with brain injuries can be hospitalized for weeks. >> the fact that he was well enough to go home in six days is really remarkable. reporter: nancy's pelosi office issued a statement. paul is grateful to the 911 operator, emergency responders, trauma care team, icu staff, and the entire medical staff for their excellent and compassionate treatment he received after the violent assault in our home. neighbors are still upset that someone was able to get inside. >> i'm just stunned by that. somebody of her stature, somebody who has been in the

public limelight, how come her house was not guarded? reporter: the suspect in this case is david depape. his lawyer will begin court as they work to set a preliminary hearing date. jr stone, abc seven news. ama: there are new details about the suspect in the attack. abc news has learned that he was from canada and was in the country illegally. immigration and customs enforcement has placed a detainer on him. this is one of the steps in getting a person deported. police believe he had a 10 month temporary visa that had expired. we sent out the alert about paul below see returning home just after 3:00 p.m. through the abc seven news app. it's one way to stay on top of breaking news. enable the push alert feature. dan: bay area tech companies

announced mass layoffs today. tonight, elon musk reportedly starting letting go of some of the social companies 7500 employees. notices will go out by 9:00 tomorrow to every single worker. those who get laid off will be notified through their personal email. those who are staying with the company will find out who their company a mill account or get financial service company strike announced its cutting its workforce by 1000 and lift his letting 700 employees go. >> the reality is that tech is a major driver of the region's economy. if you have thousands of tech layoffs, that will have ripple effects on other industries and the unemployment rate will not stay at a record low. dan: fears of a looming recession are one of the factors in these job cuts. more companies are pausing advertising on twitter. pfizer, audi, general mills have joined a list of companies. general motors was the first

company to announce it was going to hit the brakes on advertising . the companies have cited the takeover by elon musk and they are waiting to see what his plans are for that social media company before they advertise again. ama: turning now to the weather. a chilly evening. dan: good news, more rain on the way. sandhya: this is exactly the kind of forecast we want to see. let me talk about what's happening right now. it's getting chilly. temperatures have dropped down to the 40's and 50's. we have a frost advisory for solano county. temperatures down to 33 degrees means frost will form and could damage sensitive plans. bring them inside. hour-by-hour tomorrow morning, temperatures in the 30's and 40's. i will show you where they will bottom out. take a look at our rain chances. five straight days of a level 1 storm. saturday through wednesday. even beyond next week, we have

some great news. not only for our water supply but for our reduction in our fire danger. i will be back, coming up. ama: thank you. in the south bay, guilty on all counts. that verdict read for former santa clara county sheriff. she was convicted in her civil corruption trial days after announcing her retirement. her attorney told abc seven news , he would not be commenting. here's amanda del custodio. reporter: the actions of a few people are not a reflection of the great work that our deputies do every day. word from santa clara county acting sheriff ken binder. his response comes after a former longtime sheriff laurie smith was found guilty on all six corruption and misconduct counts against her. convicted thursday in her civil corruption trial. >> i think this signals that no one is above the law. and that serious, troubling, wrongdoing as was uncovered in our investigation is something

that our community takes seriously. reporter: the da on the development. smith was accused of providing concealed carry weapons permits in exchange for political donations or other favors. accusations brought by the santa clara county civil grand jury in 2021. >> these aren't felonies. these are minor indiscretions. they are not serious crimes by any stretch of the imagination. reporter: richard alexander isn't affiliated with the case. he's an attorney who has practiced in the bay area for more than 50 years. experience contributing to the county's criminal justice advisory board. he's familiar with smith. >> she did not break through a glass ceiling. she broke through a steel ceiling and she's done it for a long time. reporter: after more than two decades as sheriff, smith retired monday. the guilty verdict coming down days later. smith is now expected to return to court november 16. >> the judge will determine the appropriate sentence.

under the law, removal from office. as to what ms. smith does next, i don't know. >> you have erroneous rulings on matters of law, those are going to go straight up to the court of appeals. reporter: there is more evidence, proof that will paint a much different picture. additional criminal indictments against the undersheriff, james jensen and others accused in this bribery conspiracy scandal around concealed weapons permits remain. >> they will be upcoming in the next several months. those are criminal trials and penalties for those involved state prison. reporter: abc seven news. dan: new developments tonight with a car that was found buried in the backyard of a mansion. the chronicle reports investigators believe the mercedes was buried in an effort to commit insurance fraud. while dogs did have a number of hits on the vehicle, it was determined there were no human remains inside.

ama: maj ie e focusinon ihomess governor newsom rejected every city's plan to combat the crisis , saying they aren't doing enough. tim johns has been speaking to local elected officials and homeless advocates about the announcement. reporter: newsom's declaration has certainly garnered a lot of attention. it has proven to be devices among politicians and homeless advocates. some say it's a step that needs to be taken. others slamming it as shto battle lines are being dran around california in the fight against homelessness. thursday, governor newsom saying

he's unhappy with the way cities and counties around the state are working to fix the problem. he says until he sees local governments coming up with better plans, he is withholding roughly $1 billion in state funds. the move being met with both strong support and fierce opposition. >> we spend over $1 billion in san francisco. this is not a money problem. it's a court, creativity, larger vision problem. reporter: the supervisor wasn't surprised by the announcement. he and others say more needs to be done to tackle homelessness. in a tweet supporting the governor's decision, he said he wants to see more ambition and accountability supporting the issue. not everyone backs the plan. the outgoing san jose mayor issued a statement thursday. it reads, leadership is required to make this happen but mayors will happily take the lead. others say they were confused by

the governors announcement. >> i don't know how the governor thinks local governments have the money to do more than what they are doing. i think that it sounds good politically. reporter: a lot of places were banking on federal money coming in from the build back better bill. it was scaled back. that could have devastating consequences. shaw points to san francisco which has relied heavily on money from cropsey. it taxes large companies based on the number of employees they have working in the city. >> you have salesforce having 90% of its workforce working remotely. those employees are no longer paying taxes. reporter: there are over 113,000 people who sleep outdoors on any given night. tim johns, abc seven news. dan: it's pickle ball versus tennis in san francisco. a community meeting took place

tonight over a plan that would replace some tennis courts at a park with courts for one of the fastest-growing games around. tara campbell has more now on a different kind of court battle. reporter: it's one of the fastest growing sports in the country. pickle ball players in san francisco want more courts. >> it's really impossible to book pickle ball courts in the city. there's not enough. reporter: tenets courts can be used by painting in the proper lines and setting up shorter nets. but the push is on for more dedicated courts. like the ones here at goldman tennis center. what's it like to play on these dedicated courts? >> it depends if you have a flexible schedule. when i've looked, early morning or later in the day, there are courts available. reporter: san francisco reckon parks has a proposal to put in eight dedicated courts at stern

grove where two tennis courts were recently destroyed by a water main break. >> you see on the map, there were two tennis courts here that were lined for pickle law -- ball. reporter: the cochair of the tennis coalition of san francisco. >> we understand that pickle ball is an exciting growing sport and we support it. we don't support converting any tenet courts permanently typical ball courts. reporter: there are only 11 dedicated pickle ball courts and all of san francisco. >> half the time, the tennis courts are empty during the week. yet we can't use them to play pickle ball. reporter: tennis players are quick to make the same case. >> it's nearly impossible to get a court reservation during the prime times. frequently, i will try to reserve a court and i will see that pickle ball courts are available as well. reporter: both sides are expected to make their voices heard this evening at a town hall where reckoned parks is
