justice, the suspect is not expected to physically be here in person but today is when attorneys will be working to set a date for hezbollah mary hearing. this comes after we saw this white van backing into the family's garage moments after learning paul pelosi had been released from zuckerberg sf general, confirmed to be at home recovering. he spent nearly a week at the hospital for treatment of a skull fracture after a brutal hammer attack. speaker na pelosi praising the treatment he got from first responders and hospital staff. the surgeon is not aware of the specifics with pelosi but read that he was laying in a pool of his own blood when police arrived and said typically patients with brain injuries can be hospitalized for weeks. >> if i hear that story, someone

it was conducted after the attack on paul pelosi. it shows nearly nine in 10 people worry political divisions are increasing the risk of politically motivated violence in the country. who gets the blame, however, differs sharply among partisan and i the logical groups. 31% blame the republican party. 25% blame them credit party. 32% blame both parties equally. just 11% blame neither. kumasi: we are just four days away from election day. early voting in california, you get mail-in ballots, and millions of already been returned. the latest numbers show 16% of ballots have been returned. you can check out our ballot tracking tool on our website abc7news.com/election. kumasi: today, twitter would begin laying off some of its 7500 workers. reggie: it comes as to other bay area companies/jobs.

stripe says it is cutting its workforce by 1000. lyft is letting go up to 700 employees. >> the reality is tech is a major driver of the region and its economy. if you have thousands of tech layoffs, that will have a ripple effect on other industries, and the unemployment rate will not stay at a record low. reggie: fears of a looming recession is one factor in the cuts. we will have much more on the cuts at twitter in the next half-hour. kumasi: in the south bay, guilty on all counts for former santa clara county sheriff laurie smith. she was found guilty days after her notes in her retirement. her attorney told abc 7 news he would not be commenting. here is reporter admitted to concilio. >> the actions of a few people are not the representation of the work that our deputies do every day. word from acting sheriff ken binder.

this comes after long time sheriff laurie smith was found guilty on all six corruption and misconduct counts against her, convicted thursday in her civil corruption trial. >> i think the signals that no one is above the law and that serious, troubling wrongdoing, as was uncovered in our investigation, is something that our community takes seriously. >> d.a. jeff rosen on the development. smith was giving concealed carry weapons permits in exchange for other favors. >> first of, all, these are not colonies these are minor indiscretions. these are not serious crimes by any stretch of the imagination. >> richard alexander is not affiliated with the case. he is an attorney that has practiced in the area for more than 50 years with experience contributing to the criminal justice advisory board. he is familiar with smith. >> she did not break to a glass

ceiling, she broke to a steel ceiling and has done it for a long time. >> the guilty verdict coming down only days later. smith is now expected to return to court november 16. >> the judge will determine the appropriate sentence which under the law is removal from office. as to what ms. smith does next i don't know. >> when you have an erroneous rulings on matters of law, those will go straight up to the court of appeals. >> alexander says there is more evidence, proof he suggests to paint a different picture. additional indictments among several others accused in this bribery conspiracy scandal around concealed weapons permits remain. >> those trials will be upcoming in the next several months. those are criminal trials and the penalties for those involved state prison.

reggie: a major investment from the biden administration to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. $1.5 billion to make the u.s. carbon neutral by 2050. jobina: the biden administration says this is an historic investment that will help the nation meet its reduction goals. it will update scientific labs across the country and includes five areas of focus including efficient building, heating, and cooling, nuclear fusion energy, and that zero power grid. that zero basically means alan singh emissions with the amount of pollution removed from the atmosphere. the hope here is that all of this spending will spark innovation for green energy technology and bring new jobs to people across the country, which is needed right now. reggie: thank you. new developments that was found in that car buried in the backyard of an atherton mansion.

tenacity and perseverance and that they continue to press for her and paul whelan's release. she is facing nine years in prison for drug possession. last month, a court denied her appeal to shorten the sentence. whelan has been in prison since 2018 after accused of spying. oakland leaders will gather to celebrate the opening of the william chen park. the park is at the corner of ninth and jackson street. contribution to the neighborhood include creating a chinatown benefits district that provides beautification, maintenance, and better security. the driver in the crash will not face charges. kumasi: a state-of-the-art health care educational facility is come to downtown oakland. mayor libby schaaf announced the building of the campus, on the last section of the city center site on 12th and broadway.

san francisco-based twitter will be waking up without jobs after the takeover of elon musk. musk started to let go of some of the company's 7500 employees last night. gloria rodriguez joins us live in the newsroom with details. >> some employees have already been notified they have been laid off. this comes one week after musk took control of the company, firing top executives. in his first companywide email on thursday, he wrote, in an effort to place twitter on a healthy path we will go through difficult process of producing our global workforce on friday. we recognize this will impact a number of individuals who have made valuable contributions to twitter but this action is unfortunately necessary to ensure the company's success moving forward. the email said employees will be notified of their job status by 9:00 today. those who get laid off will be notified through their personal

email. those who are stable find out through their company email accounts. we learned some were notified at midnight and were locked out of their office accounts. all offices will be closed and badge access suspended. more companies are pausing advertising on twitter. pfizer, audi, and general mills have joined the list of big companies, according to the wall street journal. general motors was the first to announce it would hit the brakes on advertising. companies have cited the takeover by elon musk, waiting to see what his plans are for the social media company. employees filing a class action lawsuit about the massive layoffs, saying the company is doing this without enough notice, in violation of federal and california law. reggie: thank you. new data out this morning about pfizer's bivalent covid booster shot. this new shot is proving to be very effective. jobina: hours ago, pfizer and

biontech released data showing the bible and shot produces higher protection from the omicron variants than the original vaccine. one month after getting the shop, antibody responses were three to four times higher compared to the original. however, this data has not been peer-reviewed, and there are two small independent studies out there as well showing immune response is about the same as the original shot. pfizer and biontech are still conducting larger critical -- clinical trials of the booster and testing it against the other variants. doctors say the shots are an important way to her new protection from covid, especially as we enter the winter months. 26 million americans have taken the updated pfizer and moderna boosters. people as young as five are eligible for the shots. we know this generally. people are not getting them right now, the numbers are low. reggie: thank you.

the outbreak of rsv infections across the country is now being blamed for the death of a child in michigan. hospital pediatric beds are now above 80% capacity in at least 17 states. doctors say cases of rsv are proving to be more severe this year than in years past. overnight, there was some hope. the european commission approved a monoclonal antibody injection that projects -- protects newborns. >> we've been looking for solutions to rsv for close to 50 years. we don't think this. all infection from rsv. this is designed to stop rsv from being a serious disease, causing severe lung infections. reggie: officials in the usa a new vaccine should be available next year in the united states. kumasi: abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area. one of the issues we are focusing on is homelessness. governor newsom has rejected

every city's plan to combat the crisis, saying they are not doing enough. tim johns spoke with local officials and advotennt. >>in are fight againsthursday, governor s he is unhappy with the way cities and counties around the state are working to fix the problem. he says until he sees local governments coming up with better plans to combat the issue, he is withholding roughly $1 million in state funds. the moves are being met with support and opposition. >> this is not a money problem. it is a coordination, creativity, a larger vision problem. >> the san francisco supervisor said he was not surprised by the governors announcement. he, along with others, say that more needs to be done to tackle homelessness. in a tweet supporting the decision, he said he wants to see more ambition and

accountability surrounding the issue. but not everyone backs newsom's plan. the outgoing mayor issued a statement thursday. it reads in part, leadership is required to make this happen, but mayors will happily take the lead. others like randy shaw of the tenderloin housing clinic say there was some confusion about the announcement. >> i don't know why the governor thinks that local governments have the money to do more than what they are doing. >> a lot of places where baking on federal money based on the build back better bill, but that was scaled back. he specifically points to san francisco which has relied heavily on money from prop c. the law taxes large companies based on the number of employees they have working in the city. >> salesforce has 90% of its workforce working remotely.
