charges. house speaker nancy pelosi spoke about the attack on her husband for the first time today. she shared a brief update as part of a videotaped message to supporters ahead of the election. >> thank you. thank you, thank you. for your kind words, your prayers, and your good wishes for paul. it's going to be a hong haul but he will be well and it's just so tragic how it happen. but nonetheless, we have to be optimistic. >> she said her husband is surrounded by family at home. >> let's move to twitter layoffs. elon musk tweeted there was no choice when the company is losing over $4 million a day. about 50% of the san francisco-based company's work force is a.f.c.ked by this. in the bay area and really all around the world. suzanne is in the newsroom with more on these massive layoffs. >> what a tough, tough day for twitter employees. they found out by email today if they were staying with the

company or being let go and now some of them have filed a class action lawsuit because of the way things have played out. one week after elon musk took control of twitter, a $44 billion company, layoff notices went out to 50% of the company's staff. on this friday at twitter hawshes, all offices were closed and badge access suspended. >> it's horrible. and then i'm like, you know, what about their families? >> i think it's really hard to lose your job on a friday, in the manner and as far as i've seen reported without much severance. >> half the staff got word via work email they were staying. the other half got word via personal email that they're being laid off. we learned some employees were notified at midnight and locked out of their work accounts. cutbacks happened across the board. sales, marketing, engineering, even a group working to make twitter's algorithms more transparent and fair. some people hopped on the social

media plat frm today, some posted, well, my entire team just got locked out officially an ex-tweep, it's been a wild ride. employees are now filing a class action lawsuit in response to the mass layoffs. they say the company violated the federal and state law by not providing the required advance notice. ian sure, editor at large at cnet, explains what musk may be doing to get around that. >> there's a california law that says you have to give 60 dis notice. so he pays them 60 days and doesn't have to warn them of the layoffs beforehand. so i imagine that will probably be what happens this time around but it still, it indicates that people are not happy with the way he's running things. >> for those now out of work, industry expert says here's something to consider. >> tech company jobs generally are still in high demand. so it may be that people will find a place to land in the end. >> twitter is going under a lot

office but the team is ready for what they're expecting to be a busy election day. >> all our vote centers are fully staffed. we had extra vote centers in case anything happened with vote centers. we have extra staff, extra vote centers. we have people who come here every single day as soon as the vote centers open. >> november elections always bring out the voters but a tight election to decide san jose's next mayor, no doubt has people interested in making their voices heard. in fact, men dez says people are doing less early voting and really studying this important pal lot were turning in their votes. on election day the county is expected between 55 and 65% voter turnout. a major increase from the low numbers we saw on the june primaries. >> it was 35% in june. we're expecting it to be higher but we're prepared for it. we have enough staff on hand to hand physical we had a million voters turn in their ballots. >> poll workers are already hard at work sorting and counting early votes that have been

coming. in mendez says the county is seeing 19% turnout so far. while there's been big turnout, they have had no issues. disblefer voters take a ballot, there's two people with a ballot at all times. all our offices are transparent. anyone can come in and see what the process. but we do make sure where the ballot counting is happening no one can go behind those doors. it's closed, 24 hour surveillance. >> 103 secure vote cents for the total open through 8:00 p.m. on election night. in santa clara county, dustin dorsey, abc 7 news. >> and the contra costa elections division wants everyone to know they're ready for election day. you can visit five early voting sites today tomorrow and monday to cast a ballot. polling places are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on tuesday, november 8. the county has 37 official drop boxes as well as in person
