good evening. thank you for joining us on election eve. we begin with what could be the most consequential midterm election in recent history, with control of congress up for grabs. republicans pressing kitchen table issues like economy and crime. democrats saying democracy is on the line. we're on the ground in michigan, a critical battleground state, talking to voters about what issues matter to them most. here is my "nightline" co-anchor juju chang. >> oh, my gosh. >> oh, yeah, the big hair, the '80s. >> that hair is good. >> yes. everyone had that hairstyle. >> reporter: erin berkeley webber does not miss her '80s hair. >> so cute. we're all so young, yeah. >> but the commitment she has made to voting since she was 18

has stuck with her, just like her classmate a few pages away. >> she does look the same. she is very witmeresque. >> reporter: while she served on the council with michigan governor gretchen whitmer, their political ideologies have not all of the sudden aligned. >> you voted for president trump? >> i did. twice. when governor whitmer ran the first time, did you vote for her? >> no, i did not. i didn't feel -- wasn't necessarily confident in what she could do. >> reporter: but this year the mom of three boys including golden retriever dexter says she is skewing the other way. the supreme court decision on abortion changing her perspective. >> i haven't known life growing up without roe v. wade. >> without the right? >> without the right to have an abortion. seek it out if that's something that's right for me. i don't want my future potential granddaughters or my sons' friends who are women to all of the sudden have to seek

procedures illegally. and potentially with very dangerous aftereffects. >> reporter: erin is one of a growing number of suburban women across the country energized and galvanized this midterm election season because of abortion. >> we saw an uptick in women registering to vote for the first time that seemed to outpace men. and you can tie it almost directly down to the week the dobbs decision overturning roe v. wade. >> here in michigan, women are outregistering men by a margin of 8%. and democrats are outregistering republicans by 18. across the country, democrats have centered their message on issues like reproductive rights. >> it is a decision that should be made between a doctor and a woman. it should only be a doctor and a woman, not a politician. >> while republicans focus on pocketbook issues, inflation and crime. >> i think the concern of women voters are obviously similar to a lot of men voters too. they're worried about the price of groceries. they're worried about the price of gas. >> with election day tomorrow, pundits wonder if the post dobbs

energy from this summer is enough to push democrats over the top. polls show the ailing economy remains a top priority for most voters. abortion trailing behind by 18 points. >> my top three would be the economy, inflation, and probably crime and safety. abortion doesn't even rank in my top five. >> i don't like these high gas prices. i don't like the high food prices. >> the economy is the big -- the big mover. >> you don't drive past abortion clinics the same way you do gas stations. a and the fact is that matters. the one thing that hits people just about every day no matter what they do, its price of just living your life. >> so many political pundits say well, it's the economy, stupid. that the economy is top of mind and that this is a mistake in political strategy moving into the midterm. >> i think that's a false choice, frankly. the fact of the matter is the most important and profound economic decision a woman will make in her lifetime is whether

and when to have a child. it is absolutely an economic decision. it's part of the conversation. >> so you're saying abortion rights and the economy are not mutually exclusive issues? >> absolutely correct. >> it's been front and center in michigan's governor's race between whitme and conservative firebrand tudor dixon. >> i am pro-life with exceptions for the life of the mother. >> i am fighting to protect our right to choose. >> here in michigan abortion is actually on the ballot with proposal 3, which if passed would amend the state's constitution to protect abortion access. >> michigan is one of the states that is poised to go from being a pro-choice state to having one of the most extreme laws on the books. we have a 1931 law that makes abortion a felony. no exceptions for rape or incest and criminalizes doctors and nurses. >> four other states have abortion-related measures on the ballot this election day. >> michigan is a true battleground. you don't know where it's going to land. in some of the closest elects in the nation, and the thought in a lot of circles is that this is

going to be kind of a template. >> the battle to get prop 3 passed is being waged in informal gatherings like at this barn in grand rapids. >> what will happen if we do not pass proposition 3, if we do not pass reproductive rights? >> kelly works for the group red whine & blue. through wine nights like this one, they're trying to reach 100,000 voters across the country by having women tap into their personal networks, what kelly calls relational orgnizing. why is relational organizing different or perhaps better than canvassing or doorknocking? >> we find that if you are knocking doors, you would probably have about a 17, 18% chance of getting someone to open the door. but when we call, our friends and our family, we have about an 80% chance of people answering. and that's so much more effective. and that's why we encourage people to call their friends and family and neighbors. >> but there are plenty of friends and neighbors opposing prop 3 as well.

millions of dollars being spent on yards signs, giant billboards and tv ads. >> proposal 3 permanently rewrites your constitution with extreme ideas. >> why is it dangerous? >> because once you amend the constitution, it's very difficult to change what we have once we have it in the michigan constitution. >> state representative steve kara introduced michigan house bill 6270 just two days before the fall of roe. >> i believe life begins at conception. >> if his bill passes, providers could be arrested on manslaughter charges and serve up to ten years in prison. there are women across michigan and across the country who are wondering why a lawmaker like you should be able to dictate what a woman does with her body? >> a women's right to do what? >> a women's right for health care. >> so what is that health care doing with the pregnancy? >> making a health care decision based on what she and her doctor are saying. >> which terminates a life. we don't have the right to go to the bank and steal from a bank. our rights stop when they

infringe on someone else's rights. a woman believing she has the right to take an innocent life, that is terminating a pregnancy which is also killing an innocent child. >> folks that i was talking to, you know, their sincere belief is that life begins at conception. and that in their view, any kind of abortion is murder. and if you believe, that you have to do everything you can to stop abortio. what do you say to that? >> i will fight for everybody's right to believe whatever they want to. but someone else's beliefs should not dictate everyone else's rights. >> on november 9th, it will be a new day in the state of michigan. >> whitmer's opponent tuder dixon is a former steal industry executive turned media personality who has built her campaign on far right issues like questioning the 2020 election results and book bans. . there are a heck of a lot of parents in the state of michigan

right now that aren't happy with the pornographic material in our schools. >> she did not respond to "nightline's" request for an interview. >> tudor dixon is kind of out of the new maga mold of conservative stardom. no political experience. if she is going to win, it's because of the trump base behind her. >> the latest polling shows dixon and whitmer in a tight race. >> the polling location just changed a couple of years ago to this church here. >> come tuesday, erin says she is eager to vote, no matter the outcome. >> i always feel great when i come out of voting. i feel i've done my duty as an american. i've done my duty as a citizen. >> also motivating erin, her 80-year-old mother, a retired nurse who says she's voting for a democrat for the first time in her life. >> i've seen enough. i'm old enough. whether it passes or not, there will always be abortion. if it passes, we will have clean, sterile, safe abortions.
