now from abc 7, your voice, your vote. dion lim. this momentous 2022 election still has many questions left to be answered. we are here to walk you through every -- race an issue on the ballot. >> we have full team coverage with reporters tonight spread in sacramento and across the bay area. >> beginning with an intensifying race tonight in the bay area's most populous city. right now, and and grace for the mayor of san jose. >> the latest results so matt mayhem emerging as the front runner, narrowly leaving santa clara county supervisor cindy chavez. dan: these candidates are now up for election tonight. zach fuentes is live. let's go to amanda del castillo

with supervisor chavez. reporter: cindy chavez addressed the clout -- crowd twice tonight. no contention or acceptance speech. she did thank her reporters. she took time to do that. within the last three hours, standing room only at the campaign headquarters. the santa clara county supervisor and longtime politician embraced by several local leaders tonight, including evan low, jeff rosen, and many others. chavez was down by a few hundred votes. a razor thin margin that has expanded by a few thousand at this hour. chavez acknowledging that she knew this was going to be a tight race. >> when you work really hard for something, it's very easy to feel let down when things don't go exactly the way you wanted them to. the thing i know is that, it may

be age or experience, every single time we move people forward, you make a change that's meaningful to someone. reporter: chavez decade -- dedicated to decades to various public offices. she has a plan to address the crowd tonight, reassuring a final count will take time. the last update came from the county about 20 minutes ago and shows that chavez is trailing by more than 4600 votes so far. the count -- the county says the next update should be 5:00 wednesday. abc7news. dan: let's turn to this other side of the race for san jose. dion: we are live in downtown san jose with the very latest. reporter: hey there. we are at the location where

matt mayhem had his watch party for this race. a lot of people here in a celebratory mood. he addressed the crowd, saying he's not saying anything until all the votes are counted. they are waiting for this race to officially be closed. a spirit of enthusiasm here. we are talking about two candidates. cindy chavez has 20 years experience. matt mayhem was just elected to san jose city council a couple of years ago. regardless of what happens, regardless of what happens, they are going to have to continue to work together. cindy chavez will be a santa clara county supervisor if she doesn't when the waste -- race. one of the questions i asked matt mayhem tonight was, how would the collaboration look moving forward regardless of the outcome? >> after elections, elected officials have responsibilities to come together, try to understand what the electorate

was telling them, and working together to solve problems. i'm committed to focusing on the solutions that we need. reporter: you heard him say right there, he's focused on working to collaborate, focused on the solutions. that's what both sides are saying. it remains to be seen who the official winner will be. the registrar's office says this is the race they will be counting for a long time. they will continue that count tomorrow. we will continue to monitor what goes on with this. zach fuentes, abc7news. dion: moving onto the monumental election battle we are watching in washington. live look at the u.s. capitol building tonight. those critical races to decide the control of congress for the next two years. dan: this has been a national thing to pay attention to. the battle is still up in the air. dion: that goes without saying. this could change with more early and mail-in voting is they are counted. dan: it's a nailbiter. let's bring in liz kreutz,

diving into these pivotal national races in the balance of power. reporter: we've been talking about this all night. it's a nailbiter for the house and senate. for the senate, there are several races that are going to be critical in deciding our fate as a nation and which party controls the house and senate. take a look at some of those in particular. the senate races that we are following right now, the georgia senate race. rafael warnock versus herschel walker. warnock is ahead right now, 49% to 48%. it is razor thin margins. if neither candidate gets 50%, there will be a runoff. the senate race in pennsylvania. this one already called. john fetterman has one that senate race against dr.. in recent days, oprah came out and endorsed john fetterman.

president obama and president biden campaigning for him. it seems like those efforts and endorsements may have paid off. he is projected to win that senate race. turning to the arizona governor's race. democrat katie hogs against republican and former tv news anchor in phoenix kari lake who has the support of former president trump and has been brought up as a potential running mate for the former if he announces another run for president. right now, hobbes -- hogs is leaving in that rate. -- race. it will be very fascinating to see what happens as well. kari lake has already raised questions about credibility of the election results. we will see what happens. we will continue to keep an eye on those races throughout the night. you can find updates on our website. dan: fascinating stuff happening. we will check back with you on the state propositions later. dion: one of the races that will

really require patients in the coming days is the contest for the next mayor of oakland. dan: the early results are in but they are just that, early. we want to emphasize that. right now, 10 candidates running to take over for lindy schaff but there will be a waiting game from here on out because it is ranked choice voting and these are the number one votes being tallied. loren taylor has 35% of the vote. dion: lots of math to be had in the coming hours and days. our reporter joins us live from oakland. do we have a sense of the timeline? reporter: yes. good evening. i will get to that in a minute. lori taylor is here. a lot of happy people at this watch party. the early numbers are in. the early ballot numbers show that 12,000 votes, 35% for

councilmember taylor. she currently has about 29% of the vote. taylor was on stage early with his family, expressing gratitude to the voters. he says he wants to address historic inequities and come up with innovative solutions for the future. he addressed the crowd a short time ago. here's what he had to say. >> there are still tens of thousands of votes to be counted. i'm confident that this kid from oakland, the hometown kid right here at the end of the counting will be this city's next mayor. [applause] reporter: when it comes to oakland's mayor race, this is done by ranked choice voting. officials tell me these early numbers are only people's first-round votes. they can take a few days before all ranked choice weights are counted. the two front runners are clear. we will wait a couple days

before the results are in. it could be thursday. abc7news. dan: thanks very much. gavin newsom easily won the second term in office, that was no surprise. the race was just called moments after polls closed in california. it was an easy victory. cornell barnard was in sacramento with the governor, more focused on proposition one. reporter: a little more than a year after defeating a recall effort, gavin newsom has cruised to a second term as california's governor over his republican opponent. many say he didn't have the name recognition to succeed. newsom took a brief victory lap tonight, happy about the victory of prop one protecting abortion rights in the state. newsom did very little campaigning, instead focusing on abortion rights nationwide and supporting fellow democratic candidates. newsom says he doesn't take tonight's win for granted.

>> i'm humbled. this is my third election in four years. i'm deeply humbled by the results. deeply humbled to have the privilege of extending my term as governor of the state of california. i'm also deeply motivated and mindful of all the energy in this room, particularly the affirmative step the state of california took, the people of california took in unambiguous terms to assert our values and to go on the offense. to state overwhelmingly that we are a freedom state, that we support the rights of women and girls to reproductive care. reproductive rights are enshrined in the constitution of the state of california. reporter: he says he will focus on issues like housing, jobs, health care. he vows to finish his second term despite talk that he may make a run for the white house if president biden decides not to seek a second term. anything could happen.

reporter: san francisco voters have made it clear tonight, the city once known for the summer of love really wants more tough love. brooke jenkins was appointed on the promise to hold criminals accountable. as we can see with 47% of the vote so far, it appears san franciscans are sending a message they want that to continue. there was an amount of energy that filled the room as the da addressed supporters who were chanting and dancing around her. jenkins lighters -- says the city has seen for da's in the past four years. with great optimism, she reinforced her ms. said to balance reforms with accountability. >> we could get san francisco back on track. [applause] and i want to thank every single san franciscan that voted.

thank you so much. you represent, you represent that the tide has turned in san francisco. that we can be a democratic city. that we can be a liberal city, but stand for public safety. reporter: jenkins was accompanied by her husband. she gave a special shout out to the mayor and added that if it wasn't for mayor breed's trust in her, she wouldn't have been able to rebuild the das office like she has over the past four months. don't forget, mayor breed was criticized that jenkins would be her riskiest choice. i asked mayor breed about that tonight. she's proud of her choice and she's proud of the path forward for san francisco. jenkins opponents would argue with that statement.

the race isn't called yet. brooke jenkins is just thrilled with the results so far. dion: stephanie has been following this race all night long. perhaps her microphone is losing batteries. we appreciate your time. thank you. dan: tonight's race for district attorney and alameda county's history making no matter the result. a current lead for pamela price. all of the estimated vote total and 52% of the vote going to terry wiley. 48% for pamela price. abc7news reporter julian glover his life with the latest on this history making race. reporter: yes. certainly history making here. either way the votes end up shaking out by tomorrow morning or whenever the final ballots are tallied, we know that a black district attorney will be the next district attorney here and alameda county. let's talk about where the race currently stands. there's a ranger thin -- razor

thin margin. only about 6300 votes. the party has cleared out here. it was quite the crowd a short time ago. there were cheers, rocking the house a short time ago after those latest results dropped. wiley is one of the candidates trying to replace the retiring d.a. after 13 years on the job. wiley is a 32 year veteran of the das office, now serves as chief deputy d.a., campaigning on a more pragmatic approach to the job. here's what he shared with me in an interview short time ago about his message to voters. >> i thought that our message was the one that resonated. people want to see someone with experience. they want to see someone who is going to be able to run a 100 million dollar government agency effectively. at the same time, they want to see someone who is familiar with

the system so that if we have to make changes to the system, we know how to do that. we aren't coming in and looking at somebody's website and picking 10 things off the website. saying that this is what i want to do. we are talking about things that we've actually done. reporter: terry wiley hoping his 32 years in office with the district attorney's office will carry him to victory. wiley is running against pamela price, campaigning on progressive policies. she served as a civil-rights attorney and alameda county for decades. we want to highlight that razor thin margin right now, 6300 votes separating terry wiley from pamela price. we will be following all of those results on abc7news.com. as you mention, history either way will be made here and alameda county as the voters elect their first black district attorney.

[laughter] let's talk about the weather. an ice storm today. didn't dampen the spirits of voters. sandhya patel is tracking what's left of the rain tonight. sandhya: we still have some showers tonight. i want to show you live doppler 7. we got a good soaking today on election day. i'm glad to hear that it didn't affect the voter turnout. mount hamilton at 32 degrees. mix precipitation right now. spotty showers around the east bay. as we widen the picture, you will notice there were numerous reports of flooding which included parts of the bay area today. there was even a tornado in sacramento county near gault. it was a week tornado. that cold air associated with the low-pressure system triggering thunderstorms,

bringing downpours. look at these rainfall totals. for many areas, between one and three inches. it is dumping in the mountains. this is from our camera. chain controls on all roads leading up to the sierra nevada as it is still snowing. winter storm warning in effect until 10:00 tomorrow. an additional 17 inches of snow. watch out. building great -- golden gate bridge, slippery roadways. a level one on our exclusive storm impact scale through tomorrow morning. scattered showers, isolated thunder chance. look at the hourly timing. 3:00, east bay getting showers. 10:00 tomorrow morning, all of this is winding down. morning temperatures in the mid 30's to upper 40's. it's going to be chilly. bundle up. grab the umbrella if you have an early commute. you will need shades later in the day. it's going to be mid 50's to low 60's for your wednesday.

you're looking at a mix of mostly sunny in the south bay to partly cloudy in the north bay. early morning showers. level 1 for tomorrow. frosty cold thursday and veterans day. the milder weather comes in and a chance of a few showers on saturday morning. other than that, the weekend is dry.

dion: be patient in the hours to come while ballots are counted. dan: we are getting a greater picture now of early voter turnout on some of the key propositions tonight. dion: let's bring back liz kreutz, looking at those races. visualize this for us. reporter: a lot of really interesting propositions on the ballot this year in california. most notably, prop one. the measure that would enshrine abortion rights into the state constitution here in california. this proposition i had now by such wide margins. 68% of voters voting in favor of this measure. it passed here. you can see, almost all of the state voting in favor of it. just parts of the central valley and northern california against it.

prop 26 and prop 27, these are sports betting measures. prop 27 and 26 both failing, 84% voting against 27 which would legalize sports betting online. prop 30, this is the one that would tax millionaires, people who make over $2 million per year 1.75 percent. that money would go towards electric vehicle subsidies. that also failing here at 57%. interestingly enough, san francisco breaking away from the rest of the state. san franciscans voting in favor of prop 30 but it does appear that that is likely to fail. we have more information on all the propositions

dion: jackie speier is not seeking reelection in the house of representatives. the san mateo county supervisor conceded a loss to california assembly speaker pro tem kevin merlin earlier in the evening. more now from tim johns. reporter: early results showing california status emily men kevin mullin taking a pretty commanding lead in the race for congressional district 15. his opponent david canada has already conceded this race. he is expected to succeed outgoing congresswoman county's beer. i talked to both of them a short time ago. >> the bar is very high. tonight's results frankly are an affirmation of the peninsulas love for the woman to my left. the endorsement was absolutely critical to set the trajectory
