america this morning. good wednesday morning, everyone at this hour we do not know which party will control the next congress. there was no major red wave has some predicted control of the house is still in play. republicans appear to have the edge and in the senate democrats are holding their own. they scored a major victory with john fetterman beating dr oz in pennsylvania, a state where voters said abortion was their most important issue. nationwide voters said inflation was their top issue. the georgia senate race appears headed to a runoff herschel walker maintaining a slight lead, but neither candidate reaching 50% overnight now appears control of the senate will come down to georgia and nevada, where results were still being counted overnight. abc s andrew fuji begins our coverage. democrats picked up a major win early this morning in pennsylvania. john fetterman watch party, erupting in cheers after the democrat defeated trump back tv dr mehmet oz in

the state's crucial race for senate 1 30 in the morning and you're still here hanging in. we might. we launched this campaign almost two years ago. our slogan . it's on every one of those sides right now. but the balance of power in congress still hangs in the balance with other races still not called overnight. you're going to see herschel break off right tackle. in georgia republican herschel walker's campaign telling his election night watch party sit tight. at some point, you may want to transition from alcohol. caffeine. or you may want to mix them. guys we're gonna be here a

while walker is challenging democratic senator rafael warnock. the race is seen as key to republicans taking control of the senate. i'm like ricky bobby. i don't come to lose. he's gonna be tough to beat. but let me tell you what he got the wrong georgia here on warnock and walker neck and neck overnight, each with 49% of the vote at one point if neither candidate gets 50% a runoff election will be held next month. we always knew that this race would be close and so. here that's where we are. so you all just hang in there. i'm feeling good in arizona. polls closed on time after a judge rejected a republican lawsuit to extend voting by three hours due to

problems at polling places. election officials in arizona's largest county, phoenix's maricopa county say they don't expect most votes to be counted until friday in the race for governor of arizona overnight, former news anchor kerry lake who's made false claims about the 2020 election, trailing democrat katie hobbs, i know that we're all eager to find out who won each of these incredibly important races. but we need to be patient and wait for every vote to be counted. been praying to god every day all day. and i said to him, you make this victory come whatever way you want. if it comes decisive on election day, then bring it to us that way. if we have to fight through the bs and the garbage, then we will fight through the bs in the garbage. meanwhile republicans are celebrating big victories in florida governor rhonda santis, senator marco rubio and congressman matt gates , all winning reelection early in the night. people have come

here because our policies work leaders don't follow. they lied and we produced historic results a decisive win for governor. desantis who's seen as a potential presidential candidate in 2024 spent the day talking to a few democrats. let me just give you a couple of bullet points of what i was told. the democratic party in florida needs to clean house. there has been a failure of leadership and we are getting our butts kicked . another big win for republicans came in ohio, where trump backed candidate j. d. vance beat democrat tim ryan for senate. i think that we're going to continue to have some good victories all across the country , we got to see the returns come in, of course, but here's here's the thing. we've been given an opportunity to do something and that's to govern. in two closely watched races for governor, democrat kathy huckle became the first female elected governor of new york and georgia's republican governor was easily

reelected. andrew rhiannon are thanks to andrea fuji. this was not the night that house minority leader kevin mccarthy was expecting. mccarthy is confident he spoke around two a.m. eastern time. if you believe in freedom. hard work and the american dream. these results proved that there is a place for you and the republican party tonight. we built upon those gains two years ago. and it is clear that we are going to take the house back. of course, one of the biggest stories of the night was the pennsylvania senate race. abc is eva pilgrim, is with the federman campaign in pittsburgh, eva this was not a result that we were expecting to get immediately. this was a result that we thought may take several days to come in. but the votes were in enough to call this race betterment, speaking earlier, thanking the crowd that was here thinking his supporters saying that he was humbled again
1:37 am
, repeating the line that he has repeated throughout the last several days that he is fighting for every man that has ever gotten knocked down and had to get back up. again state thanks to eva there, let's head to georgia. now the senate race between raphael warnock and herschel walker appears now headed for a runoff. stevenson. sammy was in atlanta overnight, steve brianna and through this state, will be led by governor brian kemp. for another four years, he was able to beat democratic challenger stacey abrams in their second go round, she conceded the race tonight. in the u. s senate race. it is a slightly different picture. that race appears to be headed to a runoff. but the reason why party is still happening here behind me. with the incumbent senator raphael warnock's team is because they believe that there are enough votes out there, especially in the natural atlanta counties. that leak blew, where he might be able to pull off a victory. that looks
1:38 am
unlikely. what looks more likely is that this race between him and republican nominee and college football lesson walker is headed to a runoff and that that runoff would take place four weeks from tonight. back to you got to be expected, steve. thank you. a tough night, arguably for president trump former president trump. at least six of the candidates he endorsed, have lost, let's turn to a bcs justin finch watching some of the other big races this morning, justin. good morning. and rhiannon. good morning, and so far, former astronaut mark kelly is now fighting to hold his arizona senate seat kelly so far with a commanding lead over venture capitalist blake masters , who earned trump's endorsement in wisconsin republican senator ron johnson holding a narrow lead over democratic challenger blake masters. rather mandela
1:39 am
barnes hours ago, johnson said he will not declare victory until all votes are in. johnson has refused to say if he would accept a loss. and in nevada senator catherine cortez masto has been slightly ahead in her race against republican adam laxalt. former president obama campaigned with cortez masto out just last week, according to abc s jonathan karl. it was not the election night republicans were expecting. they are losing races that they were certain they were going to win. they were expecting they were going to win a seat in rhode island. we're gonna have a republican around. they lost that seat. they thought they would beat spanberger in virginia. they lost that seat. they thought they would beat marcy kaptur in ohio. they lost that seat. so yes, republicans still have a lot of ways to get to the mere five seats they need to win control. but if they win control of the house, david, this will be a very narrow majority for republicans. and in a statement , house speaker nancy pelosi

says democrats are strongly outperforming expectations. rhiannon all right, justin. thank you for that in michigan, a victory for abortion rights supporters, voters have passed a proposal to create a state constitutional right to reproductive freedom, which overrules a state ban from 1931 . we have much more election coverage ahead, including analysis from chris christie and donna brazile. that's coming up in less than 10 minutes. and coming up next. the news overnight about w. n b a star britney griner, also ahead of florida is now bracing for what could soon become hurricane nicole and later a real fish tales. this year. take the time to melt into your holiday moments with linda or mhm. irresistibly

1:48 am
the case demonstrate that they are listening to the american people. they heard their complaints about inflation. he knew that this could be a better day and better night. what you saw across the country, of course, was said democrats holding their own. we lost some ground, but we also picked up some ground and, well, all of the votes on that end democrats tonight probably breathing a sigh of relief and chris you you were cautious all evening about this whole red wave thing, but you still think there's some good signs there for the republican party. well sure. look it depends on how it all turns out, right, byron. i mean, i think if it turns out that we take the majority in the house and then on december, 5th now that we know we're gonna have a runoff in georgia if majorities at stake there and we win that then it's a successful night and the other thing you have to put factor into this is we did win 20 seats in 2020, and so the ability to be able to pick up 40 or 50 seats was probably never on the table. but all that being said it's still is a disappointment for republicans
1:49 am
that we didn't win some of those seats, the biggest cause for the disappointment. r the donald trump endorsed candidates because they pretty universally did poorly tonight if it depends on who controls the senate republicans will be all in if they have already wanted or lost the senate than herschel walker's on his own. yeah i think it's i think it's a much tougher race rehearsal. if not, if all the chips aren't at the center of the table. everyone's gonna put their uniform on that, because then it's for control. and even if you have some misgivings about herschel walker, you're going to go all in control is not at stake in the democrats have already, you know, cliff control. i think people who may have some misgivings about walker, maybe less enthusiastic. what do you say? you know, georgia, you know , we're nakheel has a strong ground game in georgia in the state of georgia, um, over from november, 3rd to january, 5th. democrats increased the percentage of people voting because they went out and they're not gonna doors of people who did not vote. ah and the 2020 election on november
1:50 am
3rd and they got him out on january. 5th the question is, what about us that did not come up today who failed to vote and will they be able to target those voters? donald trump? he was on the ballot. in many states. it would seem that this point it was not a good night for a former president. well let me just say this. he had, um he had to pick up the little when it came down to choosing candidates across the country. and as you well know, he picked a lot of the congressional candidates a lot of the federal, but he did not pick a lot of the state candidates. so republican governors by and large did far better than some of the senatorial candidates. here's the point where donald trump is donald trump a driver or is he a chaser? he is he gonna drive people away from the republican party like independence and independent leaning women suburban women. will people start chasing him? it wasn't a good night for donald trump. and whether he wants to admit it or not. what? she won't. it was a bad night for him, and
